one come on tino two three go and then punish where are we where are we bellow no goal yeah play me yeah reds are keeping it it's two one one two three four five six go then punish punish brilliant no goal though back in you two recover one two come on zap get on that ball [Music] hi i'm james simmons i'll be presenting a series of drills that help you coach offensive and defensive transition i started off playing for my local club and then at the age of nine got scattered by chelsea played through the age groups so i had a good education at the club i didn't quite make that transition into men's football coaching was something i was interested in and i just started coaching at the age of 22 23 just helping out here and there i assisted a guy called mickey bill who's now the assistant um manager to glasgow rangers under steven gerrard and then i got a taste for it and as years gone by i i managed the younger age groups i started with the under-12s as an assistant then became head coach and then years later became the under-15 head coach did that for a couple of years and and now i'm under 16 head coach so i've had about 10 years of of experience in the field and uh really enjoying it how well can you deal with the ball while you're being pressed so the higher you go up you know you're not going to get that time to take two three four touches all right and you've got to know your next pass so the second drill there's two elements really so there's two teams one team is looking to maintain the ball under pressure while one team's looking to press win it back and then on the transition go and score originally i actually saw this possession drill with an element of transition in it from pep guardiola what i did i just saw it and thought i could add goals in into this and evolve it um with recovery runs and more decision making in terms of once you do win it instead of going back to keeping it you go to score punishment for not keeping it well enough in in the modern day game especially at the top level you get punished and normally you know the ball goes into the back of your net if you don't look after it so so you know adding that element just makes it real play one two go on then go on then go on then yeah i'm gonna give it change change three one good finish sam one two good three there we go go on then go on then no still got it one two great touch three four five play on six go on there nick it nick it nick it what we got okay hold it there realistic or not okay so hold it there hold it there because this is how we're going to progress it now ball to me so so if mile's in a game yeah he has danelle here we'll rewind it back hobby miles yeah and he does that and he takes his time what would have happened recovery run so now hold it there so now the two nearest boys on the side dion you recover tino now you recover so this is this is the rule chaps if you're quick in transition it's a 2v1 me and a mundo versus danelle or miles and amanda versus if you're slow and you want to slow it down and take too many touches in the real game you're not going to have that time that's where these two come in and you stop that from happening okay everyone got that yes okay let's see how we go three one to the blues all right ready play ah okay so hold it there i'm just testing you to see if you're tuned in yeah play play let's go one two go on there there we go recover tina recover can we finish brilliant go excellent okay change good good ball's gone change over yeah blues you're keeping it let's go come on play on play on brilliant sammy well dug out excellent technique tino no go get recover bellow yep okay can you play k find someone go and find someone yeah blues have got it one two three four five brilliant six who's counting go on then go on then there we go it's 3v2 great movement yeah now we play now we play good good go on then punish go in there can we finish excellent there it is 4-3 great transition armando great finish yeah play on i'll give it to you play on yep change sloppy we can't have that chaps blues have got it go then punish punish punish go on then go on then okay defenders superb transition as well so listen in chaps hold it there what transitions are we working on both offensive and attacking okay but can you see now how important it is that when you nick it that you're playing one and two touch yes yes or no yeah so how's your awareness so what's the most important thing if i've nicked it what do i need i need a clear option for someone to go in yep so i i need to know my surroundings okay and how can you help him if i've nicked you how can you help me tell me what yeah what can you do with your arm as well yeah show me where you want it yeah so i know you want it in there okay your movement speaks for itself there was two main focuses one keeping the ball under pressure and then the team that we're pressing when you do win the ball back on then what you're going to go and do obviously the goal is to score but how do we do that so we're looking at speed of play so when you do win it support and runs wait a pass and and then end product what we're really focusing on is the team trying to win the ball back and score on the offensive transition if the two number 10s win the ball they're then going to go and counter attack towards the goal they're facing up against one defender so it becomes a 2v1 and then you're looking at speed of play and decision making to get in and score so i'm saying as soon as you win it yeah so it's let's say i'm here and i've won it in here can it be that one that breaks his line and now he's out of the game so can you after you've nick it play one touch so you've nicked it one touch in to engage and to make it more difficult and challenging for the boys keeping it we then go to one touch now you can obviously restrict it to two touches but we go one touch naturally there's maybe more turnovers and more opportunity from counter-attacks i'm going to make it more difficult because you've only had two goals in in four minutes so i'm going to go one touch because you can handle it keeping the ball one touch all right that should hopefully get more turnovers if you put people under pressure okay so when i change it to one touch for the boys keeping it i also say right now if it's a 2v1 in transition i'm allowing two more players to retreat back in who are on the outside keeping it to make it a 3v2 in favor of the defenders so what that does is it creates even more urgency in terms of the boys trying to score so if you're quick extra quick it's still a 2v1 but if you dally on the ball if you're slow it becomes a 3v2 so now that emphasis on the speed of transition and counter attack is even greater to see the full coaching course and for more exclusive content from top level professional and academy coaches subscribe to the coaches voice academy at academy.coachesvoice.com you
