"It was a dream!" Anne Hathaway looks back on Princess Diaries, Devil Wears Prada and... 'Krunt'?!

[Music] I would like to ask you about a tiny little film in your back catalogue called The Princess Diaries just to begin you are Amelia mignonette Thermopolis Renaldi princess of Genovia me a princess shut up did you have any sleepovers where you watched it mhm I'm gonna level with you I watched over the first time two days ago I beg your pardon not really uh-huh okay my confession is this when I was younger I think I basically had me as hair okay so when I watched Paulo dry-brush curly hair why do what are you doing why are you doing that don't do that like oh I agree I thought Paulo went about it the wrong way he's alright I do want to say one thing that must have been a hairpiece right tell me yes [Music] yes that was that was a hairpiece and then when it went straight so a lot of people when we made the film thought we were saying something about curly hair and it was just because my hair wouldn't do anything else and in the book she had very very famously frizzy hair so that was why we had to do it I imagine you were excited to be in that movie at that age because hey it's a motion picture with color and cameras and everything and then Julie Andrews is in it yeah a blood relative - how was that meeting her for the first time oh gosh it was a dream it's still a dream you know I've never really come down from the cloud of it it's it's she's just so what you want her to be and then she's better because she curses and she's to this day the most professional person I've ever worked with the most joyful person the best attitude are you sassing your grandma and she's so genuinely happy to just meet you and to meet people and you know and she's been this beloved icon for 50 or more years as I expected Mary Poppins practically perfect in every way there'd be some moments would make each other giggle and I'm like I can't believe I'm just giggling with you so and you have no style or sense of fashion well let's talk about devil's worth Prada I think that depends on what you know another makeover movie yes wasn't a question now is there any truth to the story that Meryl Streep spoke to you on the first day and was very nice and then was awful for the rest of us is she yes on occasion of partial truth - that she wasn't awful she was just distant and it wasn't just the first day was we would come in in the morning and Meryl would just kind of have like this gorgeous spilling blonde hair and she was so warm and you know just kind of huggy kissy and you know we'd to work everything out and then she would go into her trailer and Moran would emerge and just couldn't talk to it can look back in it now I mean the rest of us were just having I mean Stan Lee and Emily and I were having such a good call throughout the entire thing so something funny that must been kind of lonely for her that's true I think she's she survived she seems to have like you know she's doing very well I don't see my brother Jake's here where I looked I hope she continues to get work you know it's a happy tale the Polaroids from the lingerie shoot I okay I feel like people some they're just gonna figure out that she is really good I agree and when that day happens well sky's the limit they might agree with that now who is the best every blunt obviously I'm sorry do you have some prior commitment some hideous skirt convention you after you'd or John Krasinski well I've known Emily longer okay so our bonds a bit deeper but a bit but put them together incredible grunt is the real winner keeping up forever look that lip sync battle is one of the best things on the Internet [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] thank you very much just I've watched it a couple of times but the second and I was like no I still don't this isn't [Applause] thank you there's so much fun yeah I was just one of those and then if it's just even better because we just you so loved the person that you're giving the finger to you know it's just great that's true but it was amazing cuz I show up and I and I went to them and I said listen this what song do you want to do I said I want to do this one song but I only want to do it if I can get a wrecking ball and they said yeah [Applause] and I said what do you mean no that's not a normal request and they put one in the box well they but the thing is they're all SNL veterans so they're just used to making things happen overnight or sometimes not even overnight you know and so they just said no problem we'll make it work and he did and then it was and it was the actual wrecking ball from the video so it moved I just thought I was gonna kind of hang there and gyrate but no no no no no no I was supported by a whole motor but that sounded terrible anyway moving on why are women better suited to the calm than men cuz we're used to faking it it comes down to one universal truth no man will ever believe a woman is smarter than he is let's move to the hustle which is your second con-artist movie oh I know I am such an admirer of yours I have don't get me wrong they're my favorite it's that in courtroom dramas just lost it can't get enough of them big big fan how often do you get scripts like this which allow you to just have a lot of fun in a big way not as much as you would hope you know cuz I love I love high quality stupid movies you know movies that just are really just there for your pleasure but don't insult your intelligence you know I just I'm such a fan of those and I don't get sent I don't see them very often grace thank you my honor flattered so I just thought you know what we're gonna do two complements what's the big deal let's not be so precise and picky about things I need to get over it that Oceanside wrap party is gonna be off the hook I've got I I will be sitting next to Sandra Bullock and you know what I was how does it feel to reach the friendship level with Sandra Bullock that you can call us sandy that's great it's really really I mean that was just I think we're going to go into a trailer that was only full of women I just got to learn from them you know and you're just kind of out there doing your own thing for and I've been almost 20 years at that point just trying to figure out what I'm doing and I've never just been surrounded by that energy Jilly hi daph welcome to the team listen all high five at once and a similar feeling with the hustle which allows you to really do all that stuff that traditionally women wasn't meant to do which is the Pratt falling in these just feel not nice yep she's ready I'm on the South of France look how much fun this is I'm incredibly rich there's money from nice people I take money from people who have obnoxiously stupid attitudes about women is it valuable $500,000 I like it cause it's shiny what's the big deal and you get to do it with this gorgeous cut-glass English accent saying all of these big posh phrases like that bit where rebel is shooting the peasant it was a terrible shot and you get to laugh that big law my characters not British by the way Oh poor sound represent because nobody actually talks like that I have met a lot of English people in my time have you along the way and we can tell yeah we can tell I just thought there's no way England is going to let me be British it's just not gonna I'm not there yet I haven't earned it yet so if I try to play a real British person everyone's gonna go hmm but if I play someone and you don't need to know where I'm from from somewhere else who's just decided she wants to live on the side of a cliff and dress the way she wants to dress and have whatever accent she wants to have I think anyone will go with this what do men and so she speaks like a cross between Mary Poppins and Stewie from Family Guy and we're going to
