okay it's time to catch up here so I thought I had a bad fuel pump in my f-150 and I watched a bunch of YouTube videos there's a lot of good info out there and I learned a bunch and I want you to learn as well okay so the first thing is the truck it's a 2005 f150 lariat it's got a 5-4 v8 in it that should be all you need to know the next thing is the symptoms so cruising along home from work truck goes and then G and then they picked up again he goes again that lasted for about five not even five miles a few miles and then it just quit took it off to the side of the road when the engine stopped running but the engine light came on it didn't throw a code which I found out afterward but that's it so now I'm just sitting on the side of the street turn it over like it sounds like it's going to fire a little bit and it doesn't and then in my case what happen is I call the tow truck I'll spare you the whole story but after about 45 minutes turn the key on fires right up it's been running great ever since so that makes it very hard to troubleshoot okay so based on those symptoms I saw fuel alright so if you think the same sort of thing there's here's some things YouTube videos all spit fill you in on this on what you need to look for for fuel first off when you turn the key on you should hear a little noise back here that's the fuel pump kick it on kind of a high-pitched squeal but anyway so you should be able to hear that if you don't you should be looking for a fuel relay and a fuel pump fuse those are both on the passenger side you tube will hook you up with all that and if you from there have figured out that you want to do a fuel pump here's a couple things to check out first off YouTube says there's a lot of guys to either drop the tank or remove the bed both are good options for me here's the thing make sure you do this if you got the crew cab find out where that fuel pump cap is on the tank in my case even if I took the pet bed off I wouldn't be able to access that so that's like make sure you check that before you pull the bed off okay and maybe the most important thing is don't dive right into the fuel pump I do your due diligence if you have a code reader you can check the fuel real pressure from there is a sensor on the fuel rail and the reader that I have it comes up as FRP real FRP it's pressure psi and I found on YouTube Keyon engine not running is like 35 to 45 psi engine running is like 25 to 45 psi so if you have pressure at your fuel rail like that's a good sign that your pump is running you can buy a gauge and there's a quick disconnect under the hood where you can tap in a tee and check the fuel rail pressure there I did not do that again another big problem I had was that my truck was running fine all day today too so I even went through I began the project of replacing the fuel pump unfortunately was not able to do so like it is kind of a pain in the neck the issue for me was I have a full tank of fuel was 75% so I didn't want to drop a full tank there is an anti-siphon valve in there so I tried to put it put some hoses in there to siphon the fuel out it wouldn't let me began a process of frustration thought oh I'll use the fuel pump since it's running and then I try to disconnect the there the fuel filters right under here and there's two connections there also some guys on YouTube make that look easy I bought the little scissor tool to try to get that fuel filter off bottom line is like that's kind of a pain in the neck tube I have done that job before but I was struggling with it today and I think it was a sign because I have not checked everything all the way okay so here's the last thing to check there is some other dude on YouTube that tells you to check this out it's this little guy it is the fuel pump driver module fpdm that's right and what so this is under the spare tire in the back so you got a driver spare tire and then for me looking in the back it's right up here on the left hand side you can't miss it and in my case as soon as I saw it I knew it was the problem this is a new one here it this is an aluminum case on a plastic frame it's two screws and a plug anyway this this casing was all gone it was trash and it's a little circuit board in here and it was you know clearly that's the issue so and this was super easy this took five minutes to get eyes on so don't start chugging away on your fuel pump without putting eyes on this rock auto is 65 bucks I got mine at Napa for a hundred so when I got it today so whatever like you know maybe try that first I think I think this is the biggest takeaway for me today to share with you is do not dive into a fuel pump without checking this first okay so now you're looking at taking this piece off I did one bolt came out fine the other bolt sheared off so little W sorry I've kind of PB blaster and some vice grips and I was able to get that out clean it up so I'll show you the the busted one okay so here's what the driver module look like you see like I clearly you know this was trash I could tell first thing as soon as I saw it I knew it was the problem the other thing is that the kit that I have has these little rubber standoffs with it so that's I think Ford's attempts to try to mitigate future corrosion like that these little rubber standoffs keep the aluminum off the steel frame and hopefully will prevent such drastic corrosion okay good day after all took a long time to get here but I'm pretty happy you
