real quick before we begin i was recently on the zelda podcast with fellow zelda fans abby and albert we're doing a series together called searching the skies focused on the new sequel trailer and discuss a lot of stuff both zelda and nonzelda related it's super entertaining so go check out later links below [Music] [Music] the last 3d zelda game not in glorious hd has finally been remastered in that sweet sweet high definition the legend of zelda skyward sword the story of well the beginning of the story this is the origin game of the series we learned how hyrule came to be how the master sword was forged battle the very first evil and so much more and with the huge success of 2017's breath of the wild you can bet a lot of the newer fans to the series they got into it from breath of the wild will be trying this game out and with good reason but that begs a question is it better than breath of the wild of course that is an opinionated answer but generally speaking will it be a better experience to you personally well i wanted to compare the two games as they are extremely different and i'm sure a lot of fans who have only played breath of the wild will get a bit of shock at how different this game is that's mainly because breath of the wild was the first truly open world zelda game in a 3d environment but it's also different in terms of storytelling mechanics and so on just to clarify before we begin yes this video is in my opinion oh my god the horror now be sure to go grab yourself a snack or drink and send them in to get featured right here and let's take a look at if skyward sword may be a must buy for you and if it's better than breath of the wild okay i'll be splitting this video into two main segments the gameplay and the story with gameplay covering a wide range of stuff such as exploration combat puzzles etc and the story covering well the story obviously let's start with the gameplay in terms of the basic fundamentals such as controls i personally don't see these being any worse or better they are different of course as is any game and you have the option to use motion or stick and button but in my opinion this won't objectively make the game any better or worse so we can move on from here already but please remember this is solely my opinion on them yours may differ now the hd version of skyward sword does have some quality of life improvements from the original which will help in its favor for example the original text was read at a set pace which got super tedious and dragged ons at time which got super tedious and dragged on at times especially with longer dialogue now you can speed it up this sort of thing really slowed the pacing down but thankfully it was fixed another cool addition in the remakes favor is the auto saving nothing new to video games nowadays but in the original you always had to manually save at save points another fix that helps with pacing okay now for the more important stuff traversal combat and puzzles traversing the diverse landscapes of skyward sword is going to be very different in breath of the wild there is a lot of running around big open spaces and climbing freely skyward sword isn't as open and more linear as you'll have the freedom to explore a confined space you will come across walls and high ledges such as this but unlike breath of the wild you won't be able to just climb up it to progress or go where you want the nature of older zelda games is linear progression don't go into this expecting an open-air adventure such as breath where you can just go wherever you want whenever you want well i guess flying in the sky is literally open air but other than this don't expect a mass amount of freedom but that isn't a bad thing no rather you'll be exploring these areas and almost investigating area by area to find your way to progress oh and be prepared to do a lot of extreme methods of getting around whether that be swinging from a vine like indiana jones or hook shooting onto targets to pull you across a massive drop the traversal in this game is very epic and action-packed with a little bit of risk at times too something which in my opinion breathable doesn't have it has the epic adventure feeling obviously but not as much risk or edge to it which is something i really put in skyward store's favor ways of getting around will be talking to one of the inhabitants finding and solving a puzzle or perhaps simply following paths this game will feel a lot more segmented as in figure area 1 to move to area 2 figure area 2 to move to area 3 and then explore them freely whether as in breath of the wild you could openly explore area 1 2 and 3 from the beginning as you please this sounds like a bad thing when you say out loud from the point of someone who's maybe only played breath of the wild but honestly it isn't these areas to explore are typically packed with things to do puzzles enemies and inhabitants to talk to you i'll go into more depth in the story segment of the video but essentially you are exploring hyrule before it became hyrule this place is just known as the surface you'll be meeting the first ever gorons races such as the kikui that no longer exists come breath of the wild and much more such as the elden volcano the laner sea which has never become a desert traversal in my opinion in this game is equally as enjoyable as breath of the wild just very different and a little bit more unique in my opinion like cookies and brownies for me i love them both but they're different basically just be prepared for a more segmented game going area by area and of course you will be flying around the skies from island to island it would be a crime to say this isn't one of the coolest things in the entire series it's so awesome compared to the sheer size and magnitude of breath of the wild though i may actually prefer breath here mainly because the skies were pretty barren in my opinion and not as adventure filled as i expected after the initial buzz of flying the literal skies is over it can feel a bit boring to be honest with you but again that's just me i can't personally say i remember skyward swords puzzles too fondly as i can with older titles such as twilight princess and ocarina of time however skyward sword is a so-called traditional zelda game aka a pre-breath of the wild game there will be a lot more puzzles the most notable and creative kind in my opinion are the ones found in the linearusancy area you use timeshiftstones to bring a small area back in time using the mechanics of the past to solve a puzzle stuck in the present this is a huge step up from breath of the wild as the puzzles tended to be both small simple and very straightforward in that game not much challenge but in this game you will be met with more unique puzzles another fine example would be using the beetle device to fly around where link can't reach and hit switches these little puzzles are always cool in my opinion as it really opens up the gameplay and it spans it beyond just length puzzles will predominantly be found inside my next point dungeons and keep in mind this is coming from a long time zelda fan the dungeons and skyward sword are leaps and bounds better than the divine beasts if you only played prayer for the wild that may be hard to believe i mean it's literally your own experience but my god trust me when you get a taste of actual zelda dungeons you'll be bruce from finding nemo smelling fish blood you'll love it i have no doubts there this isn't to bash the divine beasts or anything they were great for their role to the game's story but that in itself was the issue many zelda fans had they were too story focused in the past dungeons have been more of just the place you have to go to to find out more about the story or to retrieve something vital to the story not actually being part of the story entirely i get that things should be progressive generally speaking but the way zelda dungeons have functioned for around 30 years straight they don't need to be that progressive like other things like i said the divine beast worked well for their given role but trust me these dungeons are much more enjoyable you'll feel like you're on an actual adventure exploring some ancient crypt or something rather than a 10 to 20 minute divine beast you could be in these bad boys for maybe an hour solving puzzles deep within the fire sanctuary of eldon volcano exploring the ancient sister and impossible origin of malice deep below it see what i mean that connects the very first game to the very last game currently breath of the wild this game really is an origin story you can even become a sand sailor and explore the long lost sand ship and even battle a skeletal pirate in a one versus one walk the plank duel which leads me to my next point combat now this can be done in two ways the original and in my opinion best way to play the game motion controls where your joy cons are literally controlling the sword and shield in real time not like the wii remote where a random swing would trigger a random sword slash like in twilight princess i mean the motion controls in skyward sword in the wii were good but they were a little bit iffy at times you can fully control link's hands this makes for some incredibly entertaining combat this is honestly the most engaging combat in the series if you ask me it really feels like you're fighting these enemies but if you want a more relaxed experience and maybe want to play in bed there is traditional stick and button which i'm honestly not too fond of for skyward sword and would say breath of the wild is better there but hey that's just me i prefer the motion controls especially on the switch on top of that there are also the items breath of the wild didn't really have your typical zelda items we had chica slate abilities to interact with the environment in skyward sword you'll have more of a set of tools unique ones at that a slingshot remote flying beetle grabber a whip hook shot the bow and arrows and so much more these aren't necessarily combat focus but they will be important typically items are found within dungeons and that dungeon's puzzles will revolve around said item so they usually have a specific purpose at first but also further purposes in other parts of the game sometimes you may even have to return to a past area to use your new item compared to breath of the wild the items are more of a toolbox with tools inside oh and we can't forget the magma myths you'll love these digging claws before rounding off the gameplay i do need to talk about the game's bosses real quick they are pretty unique to say the least mostly good some are a bit weird but overall i rate them highly to put a brief you'll be fighting a giant scorpion an insect like ball of fire a moving statue that's come to life a goofy leviathan an awesome leviathan well kind of oh and you'll fight this dude three times in between all of them oh and this big avocado looking thing and of course demise the final boss call me predictable but i prefer these unique individual bosses to the copy and paste blights they all fight differently they all look differently they all are different the blights weren't all in all the gameplay of skyward sword is i'd say equal to breath of the wild but very different they are equal in levels of enjoyment and excitement but in a very different way breath of the wild is more relaxed not as much pressure to do this or that just explore and see what happens in the wild skyward sword is more go and do this or that relax but remember your task at hand as typically it's the only thing you have to do in order to progress the combat of skyward sword can be a lot more engaging and interactive with some enemies even requiring you to slash them in a certain way or at a certain angle breath of the world is more basic but still just as fun the only part i could give fully to one over the other is skyward swords dungeons they are all unique to each other have more puzzles and enemies and honestly make me feel more of an adventurer than the divine beast did these dungeons feel real the divine beasts feel artificial which is something that once you've tried both tends to have the result of enjoying the real deal more to sum it up i think breath of the wild wins in terms of traversal because i can't deny the exploration in that game as something above all but the dungeon the combat of skyward sword is much more engaging and enjoyable for me with the most important parts of the gameplay now covered let's move on to the story first things first i'm the realist skyward sword has a story breath of the wild had a story this is one of the biggest points for me and i will tell this to anyone whenever comparing any other zelda game to breath of the wild in breath of the wild we play the game learning a story which already happened in other games we play the story as it happens that is my view anyway the present story was still good don't get me wrong but when comparing it's not as good in skyward sword you will play through the actual story itself to briefly explain you start off in skyloft the flowing settlement protected by hylia this is because many years ago the people of the surface were moved to the skies to protect them from an evil invasion from the depths of the land hell basically years later the chosen hero link begins getting nightmares some crazy bad stuff starts happening down on the long forgotten surface and the hero must rise to explore it and save princess zelda from the oncoming evil he builds what is known as the master sword originally named the goddess sword he does so by infusing him with the flames of the gods thus creating the master sword then with this mighty blade he travels in time for a bit and goes to slay the source of evil demise this is the dude responsible for every single bit of evil in the zelda series it's all due to accuracy laid upon defeat to link he cares that the land will forever be plagued by evil in a cycle that will last forever this is why hyrule is essentially never at peace for very long and basically explains why zelda games keep coming and coming there is always another evil to come basically link explores hyrule before it became hyrule builds the master sword explores some ancient dungeons and seals the source of evil in my opinion off the bat skyward sword has a far better storyline than breath of the wild and what i summed up there is just the gist of it you'll also learn about the closest lincoln zelda have ever been to becoming an actual couple zealand fans will love this game you'll learn a lot of origin stories for the rest of the series you'll explore the very beginning of time essentially at the end of the game you'll see the very very early stages of the kind of affair being formed and my god you'll meet some interesting characters along the way you know that whole zelda timeline thing this game is the very beginning of that skyward sword is the origin game of this series i think it's very difficult to argue against this game's story being something other than fantastic for me you've got an origin story that explains a lot of stuff that reoccurs time and time again throughout the series and then you've got an insanely deep story but you've played the storyline 100 years after that happened the only difference is skyward sword will be following a linear one-way path and breath of the wild follows a very open space to do whatever you like in any order for me linearity tells a better story breath of the wild could technically be learned completely out of order in terms of the memories and for me that was cool finding them anyway but didn't really help me to learn the story in the way i like being told a story in order obviously that is a very personal opinion to me both are very very good but for me skyward sword has a more entertaining story and if you've only played bear for the wild i would highly recommend trying this game even just the z-line content is worth it alone so i definitely rank skyward sword's story higher than breath of the wilds to begin concluding i just want to put it out there even if skyrosword isn't better than breath of the wild for you it's still a fantastic game worth playing this video is 90 my own opinion to share my views and potentially help you figure out if this game is for you or just for some entertainment to watch i guess another thing i want to know quickly is that skyward sword has a fantastic soundtrack not as good as fight princess obviously if that's my favorite game you know that but even that i'd maybe rank higher than breath of the wild it's also fully orchestrated which is pretty cool something to know about me is that my opinion on ranking zelda games often changes as i replay them time and time again as it stands i currently think skyward sword may actually be better now that i've had the time to sit down and think about it but part of that could also be the hype surrounding this remake which i've really been enjoying only time will tell if you're curious twilight princess is my all-time favorite zelda game but numbers 5 to 2 are always changing whenever i play them personally i would say skyward sword is better than breath of the wild for me at the moment the story is better and i feel like i'd have more fun with it in terms of playing a zelda game but let me know what you think have fun with skyward sword hd and let me all know what you think after or during plane i'd love to hear thanks again for watching i really hope you enjoyed the video and if you did be sure to drop a like and consider subscribing for more fabulous zelda content i hope this video was enjoyable and helped share some views on the game if you're thinking of getting it leave a comment below with what you're most excited for in the remake or what you found most cool or the coolest thing you've found so far even if that's just playing the game as a whole as always a huge special thank you goes out to all of my supporters across patreon and youtube with special mention to new supporter zdi productions for joining via patreon thank you very much i appreciate it if you'd like to join them and get yourself some
