[Music] thanks for tuning in you're watching dirt bike Channel I'm your host Kyle brother son and I've got Scott Seeley here with me we are sitting in front of the beautiful project bike the 2003 on the cr250 our Scott is my oldest friend in the world as many of you know we met when we were like two years old when our moms would do playdates with us and for some dumb reason we've stayed friends ever since and I think it's just a testament to the fact that he has poor you know like judgment skills similar similar interests like you're not my oldest friend I have friends that are way older than you well if you want to get super serious I knew what you meant I've been friends with you longer than anyone does and I feel fortunate that I have friends like that in my life that I have you well and you know what dirt bikes have really done that for us for sure dirt bikes have brought us as our families of growing and things dirt bikes work took us to different areas in the state you know we don't live next to each other anymore yeah yeah but dirt bikes have helped rekindle that and and part of the reason why you know I remember when I was gonna get into this fight well I guess it was in 2010 eight years ago Scott and I were having a conversation what bike should I get and he said he had a question to me and he said do you want to work on your bike or do you want to ride it and we were kind of talking about four-stroke vs. two-stroke at the time but I want to I want to I want to change the narrative that a little bit and question is do you want to work on your bike or do you want to ride it now this this bike to frame the discussion we bought this bike as a project bike because most people can't go out and afford an eight nine or ten thousand dollar bike so they need to buy a bike that's a little bit more economical right right so we came out we found a bike we bought this for about eighteen hundred dollars and then we started putting parts into it and what we wanted to do was make this trail worthy and make it ready to go and tackle anything and the question I have for you is after refreshing your memory working on project bikes do you think it's worth it did we did we come out and because we'll will run down the list of all the stuff we had to do and then we need to put a time on we need to put a price on your time to fix all this stuff my and I guess that's a super long question but what what did you learn as you read you know equated yourself with fixing up an older project bike so I've worked on lots of bikes and I've had lots of bikes that were in worse shape than this one really and some of them I made them that way I put them in I put them through their paces and broke things you know but the question is we save it did we really save anything by doing this or should we have just gone out and bought a $4,000 or $5,000 so when kids a lot of kids in the community will ask me what should I buy and I always tell them do what you got to do save your money a little longer and buy a bike that's five years old or less and the reason that I say that is because they don't know how to do maintenance they don't know what to look for they don't know how to prevent and in fact for example a kid brought me a bike just the other day and I had to weld his case right here because his chain had come apart and broken the case and what had happened is he bought an older bike it wasn't it was a one of the early kx4 50s so like an oh seven maybe mm-hmm which is actually newer than this bike but I hadn't been maintained well and somebody the the previous owner had put in a master link that didn't work in there and it came apart and the chain wadded up and busted that the the air filter housing bolt on on the other side was stripped out so it only had one bolt in there you know they're just things like that when you get an older bike and it hasn't been properly maintained you run into a lot of problems that can cost you a fortune especially in four strokes four strokes are really expensive to repair if you've got to buy cams if you've got to buy a head and a cylinder you know bottom ends they're just there's more moving parts they're more expensive to work on so is it worth it that's an individual if you're the kind of person that wants to learn how things work if you're the kind of person that wants to learn how to work on a dirt bike yes I think it's worth it because the knowledge that I have from doing that to me is invaluable you couldn't have got in it couldn't have gotten any other way no aside from going to a motorcycle mechanics Institute or something and even then the experience that I have from working on bikes to me is invaluable and I've used it in a lot of ways and it's helped me build a relationship with a lot of great people you know I was doing suspension for guys out of my garage for a while I've done lots and lots of wheel bearings and fork seal changes and things like that and it's helped me to know people in the community and it's and it's a wonderful experience and I wouldn't trade it but at this point in my life now that I have that experience know this bike would not be worth it to me and and why just because the amount we we put and in full disclosure as you guys know a lot of the parts that we put on this were donated but we can't not everyone's going to be able to get those parts donated the only one donated is because exposure exposure so here we are so the companies are going to get exposure but but we would have had to buy all the parts you would have had to buy all the parts and then the time so at one point in my life my time was worth less than money at this point in my life it's not I have so many demands on my time with my family things that I think are important with with my church with coaching wrestling and with my kids you know my kids are getting older and so my time plus my ability to earn a living and make money the responsibility levels gone up the demand on my time has gone up which meet which means the time that you have to recreate has got has shrunk has shrunk right but the money I have to do it with is greater right so I have more of a crunch on my time and less of a crunch on my money so at this point I want a new freaking bike because I don't want to work on it I want to maintain maintain it but not had I don't want to work not have to remake a seal the piston and not and not and not have to and not have to rewrite well different different parts of the write unless I have to like on my Yamaha when I ripped and lay off the swingarm and lucky for me I have the ability to do that yeah and that that was a that those are skills that I gained through a lot of hard hard lessons you know so yes it's worth it but to me now at this point no it's not worth it because the time that I spent on this bike I could have used to earn enough money to buy a brand new one because the time that I spent on this bike I could have used to earn enough money to buy a brand new one I this is this this is something I've been telling my dad because you use it you almost stole you stole the words out of my mouth the thing that the thing that I want to say about a project bike like this is we have a finite amount of time we can never ever ever get any more time than we have we can always figure out a way to make more money right I mean and sometimes money is hard to make it certain times my life money was really hard to make the money that I've made off YouTube ad revenue is the hardest money I've ever made in my life it's taken me more hours to you know get to five hundred dollars a month or whatever it is on YouTube a burner that's hard money to make but I can figure out ways to make more money I can never figure out ways to make more time and so based off of this experience it's really helped and as Scott and I have talked about it for many guys you might need to go out and get a project bike and then just put money into it over the net over a year or two and that's a great way to do it and if that's the way that you can afford dirt bikes more power to you absolutely then there's a different segment of people that are maybe just a little bit in a little bit different station in life and I think this is where a lot of people fit in or instead of buying the $1,800 dirt bike the 15 years old maybe what you should be doing is looking for saving for the bike that's three to five years old and spend maybe five five five grand on an app you'll have a platform that doesn't have as many problems as this does and then you won't be putting as much time and believe it or not to fixing it it's easy to get information because everyone is sharing information about that bike this bike is outdated enough that when I look for information on it is area it's old that's a good point that's you know parts people are producing parts currently you're not finding old parts you're not having old technology in your aftermarket parts they're the the newest and the best of what there is you know the newest and latest technology and companies are still hungry for your business right right and now that bike and now because they know there's a lot of them so they're so your advocate parts are more plentiful I love this bike I think this bike is great and I think this bike will do do good things and I think it would be a lot I do a lot of good for a lot of people but we didn't we didn't we didn't save as much as we thought no we ended up especially with the amount of time but we had all these parts that we put into it some we had to and some we didn't have to and some you can't throw a dollar value at you know I mean if you paid a mechanic to do what I've done and all the little stupid tweaks and everything I mean you'd be another's you'd be multiple thousands more yeah so this bike we could easily put a price tag on this bike with what you've had to do we we could and we'll do the math on it but we could easily get it to six or seven thousand dollars sure I mean depending on how generous I am in paying myself you know yeah if but if I say my shop rate is seventy-five dollars an hour on the low end yeah you know so if you were paying a shop to do it it the only way a bike like this works is if you're willing to dig in get your hands greasy and do it yourself and spend the time in spend the time so if you've got if you got the time to do it go for it yeah right but but but no but just know going in you're gonna spend a lot of sweat equity and the amount of money you save will have to be offset by the amount of time you spend absolutely and there's no you you either have to pay the money or you have to pay the time there's no getting around it and now if you're in a in a position in life like I am and you enjoy working on bikes and you have a new bike to ride while you work on this one maybe that makes sense too and a lot of guys do that and a lot of guys do and a lot of guys at that point they start going for the vintage bikes the Makos kissable tacos and they they get energized and they're funny it's a collection and it's a different thing and I and I'm not taking anything away from this bike I think these bikes are still very capable but just know what you're getting into yeah yes it's it's a it's a fun it's a good topic I think it's a good thing I want to see what you guys think down in the comments again we're not trying to poopoo anybody on doing anything we just wanted to bring it to light that it's not always the cheapest thing you end up spending you end up spending money on the parts and your time can you can never make more time and you've got to spend the money or the time on the bike and I would say whatever decision you make is the right decision because everyone's gonna be different right there's no whichever whatever you choose that's the right thing to do because the worst thing you can do is nothing and sit and think about it and wish you you can wish your life away just go do something if you feel like well I'm not disciplined enough to save my money and buy a new bike then go buy an old bike but get out there and enjoy the sport and enjoy the creations that God's given us and see this beautiful world awesome from the scene of a two-stroke or four-stroke mostly a two-stroke no four strokes are good the thing is if you're on the two-stroke everything is better like your life is better like your muscles are bigger colors are brighter you know like I mean I know your wife is prettier when you write a two-stroke I mean these are these are things we've I know I make more money we've actually proven I mean there's scientific evidence that shows that two strokes are them they add five to seven years to your life thanks for
