hey guys my dog here and today I wanted to go over a few tips for new players if you haven't realized it yet squad is currently 50% off for the steam summer sale we've been getting a whole bunch of new players checking out the community and wanting to learn if you're an experienced squad player this is probably stuff you already know but I've been getting a lot of people that stop by the stream and ask things like what is squad what are the game modes and what is the objective so for you guys I wanted to explain what squad is briefly describe the different types of game modes and then go over some of the key mechanics behind a typical game squad that will help you get started like selecting your kit and building a fob I'll have a separate video for beginner tips and tricks so keep an eye out for that one as well before we dive in I do want to say that this is squad how it is as of June 2019 there may be small tweaks to certain mechanics due to the nature of the game still being in development so I'll make sure to post a link in the description below to any update videos if big sweeping changes are made so what is squad well squad is an online cooperative tactical military simulator or milsim it's a first-person shooter that has elements of FPS play you may find in games like escape from tarkov dayz or even Rainbow six siege but it also adds in combined-arms combat with fully manned vehicles there are smaller transportation vehicles but also large main battle tanks like the American Abrams British Challenger or the Russian t-72 which require a driver as gunner and Commander additionally you'll also have player built bases to establish spawn points put up gun emplacements set up mortars ammo resupply and more and squad players take sides and split up into nine man squads to fight over objectives what you do from the moment you load up into the game - when it's over is completely up to you and your teammates squad leaders will communicate with each other to discuss strategy which will then be communicated to the squad itself there's no progression system no weapon skins no battle paths you play squad because of squad and no gimmicks are needed it's faster pace than ARMA and less rkd than battlefield so if you like working together with other players modern combat and a tactical approach to first-person shooters on a larger scale you're going to love squad additionally if anyone is familiar with the old battlefield 2 mod project reality squad is actually based off of it after a successful Kickstarter campaign in 2015 although we're not certain when we'll be out of early access the current gameplay is more like a full release than most games in alphas or betas another frequent question I get is how the community or how some people have said it is this a dead game well first off the community is absolutely amazing it's active and the devs are incredibly involved the join squad subreddit and discord are extremely popular the wiki is constantly updated and at any given time of the day you'll see full servers and even queues to get into them unlike games like Call of Duty squad has community run servers they're typically clan owned and it is common to find people playing the same server or group of servers day in and day out as a new player I would recommend finding a server that is either full or has one to two people in queue stick with it for a couple games and see how it is tell your squad that you're a new player and more often than not the squad leader and your squad mates will help you out if you like the server keep going back to it and you'll notice the same familiar names and voices it really is a great feeling hopping into a server and seeing the same squad leader medic or that tank crew you played with before and it makes you feel like you're really part of the server's community if you have a bad experience on the server try another one I'm not gonna lie and say they don't exist but toxic squad leaders and teammates are the exception not the norm if you're really worried or anxious about jumping in there are also plenty of servers that say something like new players welcome or learning friendly and although ping is important it's not nearly as critical as games like counter-strike or League of Legends if nothing is full as long as your ping is lower than 200 you won't see too many problems so feel free to check out that british or germany server if you're in north america or maybe that East Coast server if you're over in Europe right now that we have a little insight on what squad is how do the games actually play out one of the most common questions I get with this is how long does a game a squat actually last well although each game has a two hour timer it is extremely rare for them to last that long a typical game will last anywhere between 45 minutes to an hour with lopsided games ending within 30 minutes and extremely tight games pushing an hour and 15 or even an hour 30 we'll talk about game modes in a sec as these can also affect the time but to keep it safe just think that an average game of squad will be about an hour give or take five or ten minutes now with regards to game play I often hear things like what is the objective or how do you win an easy comparison to make is that since Squad has its roots based in battlefield 2 any of the game modes have some similarities to battlefield game modes like conquest or breakthrough but that is really simplifying it as of June 2019 there are seven game modes but we're gonna go over the three most common modes you'll be seen when you jump into a server the first is advanced as secure or AAS and it's by far the most popular game mode in AAS teams fight over a set of control points or flags in order to drain the enemy's tickets both teams start at their respective main bases and move to capture the neutral flags unlike conquest and Battlefield these flags must be captured in order and having more Flags than the enemy will start a ticket bleed by capturing objectives killing the enemy and destroying enemy vehicles you will eventually reduce the enemy's tickets to zero and win the game secondly a relatively new variant of this game-mode is random advances secure or RAAS this has the same rules as a s but you are not able to see all of the flags on the map in RAAS once you capture the first flag you will then see the next one pop up on the map and then it will be able to be contested this fog of war mechanic makes for more interesting games as some squads will wait to see where the flags end up while others will push out scouting ahead in order to contest areas of the map in hopes that there is a flag nearby I would argue that this is slowly becoming the main game mode in squad as the nature of random Flags hidden behind a fog of war makes aggressive attacks towards the enemies first flag al less likely lastly the third most common game mode you'll run into is invasion an invasion one team defends the entire map while the other one attacks defenders start with a massive amounts of tickets while attackers must capture points in order to increase their own tickets flags cannot be recaptured by the defenders so defenses are incredibly important and you may often see teams focusing on only a few key areas of the map to set up massive bases big emplacements and mortars although this is one of the more popular game modes this is the one that may last the full two hours in order to win the attackers must capture all of the points on the map while defenders can only win if they reduce the enemy's tickets to 0 since attackers gain a hundred tickets for each flag they capture and good defenses competent attacks can result in intense fighting over every area of the map it isn't uncommon for these games to last an hour and a half or two hours I would strongly recommend any new player to play any one of these three game modes attack and secure random attack and secure or invasion these game modes are not only the most popular but will give you the best feel for squad and how teams interact with each other and move around the map there are plenty of other game modes including a brand-new one called territory control which I go over in my v14 update video but play these ones first if you're unsure of how to find these games look for AAS RAAS or inv in either the server title or the map name in the server browser when you join the server the team you're currently placed on will have a giant green button that says continue if you wish to join the other team you can click the click to join button on the other faction but typically you're Auto balanced on the right team so I would always recommend simply clicking continue and jumping right in once you're in click the green join button next to a squad some squads may show full or red padlock indicating that they are locked these are typically reserved for smaller squads that are specialized such as the tank group the next thing you're gonna want to do is grab a kit right well as mentioned previously there's no weapon customization a squad based on the amount of squad members and the players on your team only certain it's are available to be selected squad is supposed to replicate a large-scale war between factions so generalized loadouts like m4s and aks with varying optics light machineguns and soldier carried anti-tank weapons are standard when selecting a kit you'll notice that some may have drop-down menus showing different variations of that kit such as maybe an m4 with a red dot or one with just iron sights but a foregrip additionally some are going to be highlighted in red which means that they're unavailable this either means it is locked because there are not enough players in your squad or on your team or the kit has already been taken by another person for example the combat engineer kit is only available once a team has 15 players and the second one is available at 20 players additionally you need to have three players in the squad in order to be eligible to even select that kit because of the limited numbers of these specialists and kits roles like heavy anti-tank combat engineer and machine gunners should not be taken lightly selecting marksmen because you want to quote-unquote snipe might result in your squad not having enough anti-tank if squad 1 takes both heavy anti-tank kits instead of letting another squad have one it may results in squad 2 running into Armour on the other side of the map and them having no way to take it out as a new player I'll keep it simple and I'll just strongly recommend one of the two kits medic or rifleman as a medic you'll be sticking with your squad healing with your med pouch and reviving with bandages as a rifleman you're more than just a rifle and also have the ability to build sandbags and drop ammo bags for your squad to resupply off of these are critical squad roles that will require you to stick with your team and listen to your squad leader but will also help you learn how squad works as a unit you'll find frequent call-outs for healing or ammo and have plenty of action with the standard issue rifle most importantly you'll be able to also see how the other kits in your squad are used without wasting critical assets the point I'm trying to make here is that this isn't battlefield you can't simply grab the kit you want to use all the time because it's a team game additionally you want to know how to use this kit before you actually start playing with it since some are extremely important to the game itself sometimes you can't just pick marksman because we need more light anti-tank to be honest when I'm not squad leading my favorite kid is just the basic rifleman it's incredibly versatile and if you're ever unsure of what's a pick a rifleman is always welcome in any squad after you've selected your kit you'll spot it when you're in use v as in Victor for local coms and B as in Bravo for squad comes local lets you talk to everyone on your team nearby no matter the squad where a squad comes just let your squad communicate to each other although you won't use this until you're a squad leader just so that you're aware G as in George is for command coms so that squad leaders can communicate to each other the basic rule of thumbs with comes is to keep random chatter to local with squad orders and contacts going in squad at the beginning of games you'll typically spawn at main however during the rest of the game you'll spawn at either a rally as indicated by your squads numbered flag on the map or a hab rally spawn and waves and can be easily placed out by squad leaders but they can only spawn your fellow squad mates Habs are stationary but allow for anyone on the team to spawn it there's a lot more behind rallies and spawns at HAP's but we'll save that for a later video what you should do every time you join a squad now is ask your squad leader where to spot it's common courtesy and it helps keep the squad together now that we have a general overview of what squad is and the most popular game modes in squad the last overwhelming part of the game is what we like to call the fob although the radio and Forward Operating Base or fob are used interchangeably a fob is actually the location within a radios area that allow teams to build spawn bunkers weapon emplacements and vehicle resupply stations once a radio is destroyed all emplacements and spawn areas are located inside this fob are also destroyed which is why they are so important to build a fob a radio is placed by the squad leader this requires a logistics truck and one team member nearby once placed squad leaders can put down with is called a HAP basically it's a spawn point for your entire team and an ammo crate which allows you to resupply ammunition and also change your kit to build these you will hear squad leaders asks you to build or dig up the hab to build pull out your shovel left click and hold and you'll start digging Congrats you built your first fob at the top left your screen you'll see a yellow hammer and a red ammo belt this indicates the fob supply and ammo points in order to build anything other than a radio a squad leader needs supply you'll often hear requests for build indicating resources used to build items like halves and mortars or ammo indicating ammunition used for infantry but also ammunition used for weapon emplacements like mg nest mortars and missiles this is all brought to the fob by a logistics truck or logy squad leaders frequently tell their squads to jump in a logy at the start of a game this will allow them to move out and build a fob additionally you will hear requests for the wonderful logy run a logy run is basically driving the logic back to main grab and more build and supplies and bringing it back to the fob lodging rooms are crucial to the survivability of fobs as once ammo starts drying up teams become increasingly ineffective as a new player if a squad leader asks for a volunteer to do a lodge run do it so you can learn I'm not gonna lie and say it's the sexiest part of squad but we've all done it and it's really important to know how it works while in the logy you left-click to drop supplies and your right-click to pick up supplies pressing 1 or scrolling up will select the build while pressing 2 or scrolling down will select ammo the most common requests for logy runs are 50/50 or full ammo now these may seem self-explanatory but just so there's no confusion 50/50 means 50% of the carrying capacity of the loggias build and the other 50% is ammo lodges can have varying capacities depending on the truck so although this typically means 1500 of each resource look at the bottom right of your screen to confirm now that you know how to build and supply a fob you're going to want to know how to take one out when assaulting a fob squad leaders will more often than not assault the hab as you know the hab is a spawn point of the team however if two enemies are within 30 metres of the hab that spawn is disabled once the spawn is disabled the next step is to find and destroy the radio just as left-click was to build with your shovel right-click is to destroy when attacking an enemy base you'll often hear orders for find the radio or call-outs like radio on me finding the enemy radio and digging it down will destroy the spawns guns and remaining build an ammo supply on that fob ultimately deleting that enemy base from the game losing fobs can cost teams games poorly placed fobs files with no ammo or files without defenses can be overrun and if there are no backups then teams are left scrambling to spawn on the map and ultimately contest flag points now I know that's a lot to take in but I hope this overview of squad the game modes and basic game overview will help make it a little less intimidating I'll be released in another video on beginner tips and tricks including common call-outs in depth kit overviews and some other game mechanics for those of you wanting to learn more but until then take this information jump in and try it out the best way I tell new players to learn is to just start playing squad has a steep learning curve but the community is incredibly friendly to new players ask questions volunteer and let people know that you're new if someone asks for something say I'll do it but I'm new so please tell me how it may look intimidating but you'll realize it after a few games it all starts I hope this helped and if you liked it give it a thumbs up if you have questions feel free to post them in the comments below and if you want more hit that subscribe button and don't forget to join us for the live streams at twitch.tv slash Boyd dog where I stream squad we have monthly giveaways and supporter Sundays where I even squad lead and invite viewers to play it's a lot of fun so feel free to stop by say hi enjoy the games or even ask some questions as well and with that good luck out there and we'll see you next time peace
