Most people, when they think of Botswana, imagine large areas of lush green wetlands. Like the Okavango Delta, or perhaps big rivers...like the wonderful Chobe where Pangolin Photo Safaris is based. Not many people realize that the vast majority of the country, is part of the Kalahari desert... My fellow photo hosts and I, took a road trip to explore and photograph these areas. We started in the vast expanses of the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans, before heading to Dinaka - in the Central Kalahari - to spend some time in their amazing waterhole hide. We then looped back past the ancient Baines Baobab... to Nxai Pan, a place rarely visited and photographed... and we are so glad we did, as we had one of the most epic wildlife photography moments EVER!! Here is what happened... Cheers! All right! Day two crossing the pans. Let's hope we're not getting stuck today. ...and let's hope we get to Kubu Island! We are here at the Dinaka hide... Fantastic and productive morning. A lot of animals coming and going... A lot of subject matter. Getting some great shots. Leave my cup! Baines Baobab. It's a very big landmark, that still looks the same that it did hundreds of years ago...when old Baines walked through here, and he painted them. It's a very special tree I think...and there was one of the baobab trees that was lying down on it's side..and that's still lying down today. That was way before there was any country here. Just shows you how timeless baobab trees are, that they go through years and years, and even decades...and they still look the same as that it looked when Baines walked through as an explorer. We are here by a lion sighting and it smells terrible. Cheers guys! Cheers! What a day... We woke up in Boteti River this morning... and we had lunch under Baines Baobab on the salt pans... all by ourselves. How epic was that. Lions on the giraffe kill. Oh my word! One of the best sightings I have ever had. I don't even want to talk about the sunset. I was amazed! One giraffe...and then the elephant came. Another giraffe...and if you clearly look, there's another one in the far distance... ...and then you had it all in one frame!
