Jung opened a window for us and pointed a direction. He didnโ€™t uncover EVERYTHING. My experience has both been clarified by what he has taught and also has been completely unique. Probably the most beneficial thing for me personally is helping me realize that I wasnโ€™t going crazy and that I didnโ€™t need to be institutionalized. My trickster was .... holy shit... letโ€™s just call it โ€œcreativeโ€.

Oh doctor you we have been discussing in some detail some of the factors in the development of the personality of individual we and you have very kindly elaborated for us on some of your fundamental concepts such as the archetype and at least simply what it means and certain types of archetypes such as the anima and the animus and we try to show perhaps in our discussion some of the ways that your ideas may have differed from those of dr. Freud now another concept or idea that seems to be a very interesting one in your work at least as I see it is the term or concept persona and of course this seems to have a lot of relevance to the the daily living of the individual I wonder if you would mind telling us a little bit about how you construe this term persona what is this a practical concept we need in elucidating people's relation I noticed with my patients particularly with people that are in in public life that they have a certain way of presenting themselves first take the doctor he has a certain way versus he has good bedside manners and and he he behaves as when asked expects a doctor behaves he may even identify himself with it and I believe that he is what he appears to be yes he must appear in in a certain form unless people don't believe that he is a doctor and so when he is a professor he is also supposed to behave in a certain way so that it is plausible that he is Apophis No so the persona is partially the result of the demands society has and on the other side it is a compromise with what one likes to be or with water or as one likes to appear say yeah so take for instance a parson he also has his particular manner and as corresponding to the general expectation and he behaves also in a in other way combined with his persona that is forced upon him by a society in such a way that also his fiction of himself his idea about himself is more or less portrayed or represented so the persona is a certain certain complicated system of behavior which is partially dictated by society and partially dictated by the expectations of the wishes one nurses once out yeah now this is not the real personality in spite of the fact that people will assure you that that is all quite real and quite honest yet it is not now such a performance who say the performance of the persona is quite all right as long as you know that you are not identical with the way in which you appear yeah but if you are unconscious of this fact then you get into some times where it is agreeable conflicts namely people will can't help noticing that at home for instance you are quite different from what you appear to be in public and people who don't know it don't over it in the end they deny that they are like that but they are like that they are it then you don't know that which is the real man yes yeah is he the man as he's at home or in intimate relations or is he the man that appears in public it is a question of checkers inside yes oh it is such a occasionally there is such a difference that you would always be able to speak of the double personality yes and the more that is pronounced to more people that people are you wrote it to get neurotic because I have two different ways they are contradict themselves all the time and then just it as much as their own cultures of themselves do they don't know it I think the whole one every report is that there are two and so no removal for both sides oh that's no I'm only about the other side and then there are situations are crash because if the way you are create certain situations in with people in the ovulations and these these two situations don't chime in say they are just dishonest yeah and at the boat that is the case the most people on the Orting actually would you say that when the individual may even have more than two personas in other words would he could he possibly home early you know they really can't afford it very well to play more than two O's but there are there are cases for instance where people have up to five different personalities in cases of of dissociation personality well which is the bond person call it person a doesn't know of the existence of the person B but B knows of a personality see that doesn't know of the two others can't see you yes very cases it's just an orderly dissociation of a personality phone calls at the systematic dissociation in contradiction to the chaotic or unsystematic dissociation you'll find in schizophrenia yeah now you distinguish between the term persona the term persona and the term ego in other words as you see them they're two different things yes yes oh yes what is the difference between the term ego as you see it and the turbos OCD the ego is supposed to be the representative of the real person but as I say for instance in the case where the nose of a but a doesn't know of B in that case one would say the ego is more on the side of see yeah because the ego has a more complete knowledge and a is it a split of personality yeah now you also use the term itself yes how the word self and we this have a different meaning let's say eagle oh yes oh yes you see when I say so then you mustn't think of I myself because that is only your empirical South and that is covered by the term ego yes but when it is matter of the solve then it is matter of a personality that is more complete than the ego because the ego is only consist of what you are cultures oh yes yes your where does the girl but you know to be your house for instance in our example P that knows a on a a doesn't know B P is relatively in the position of the Sun yes namely the south is on the one side the ego on the other side the unconscious analogy which every body possible is in the possession of every body not in the possession we open is just the other way about that the uncles was in possession of consciousness yeah but that is a different case now you see while I am talking I'm conscious of what I say I am cautious of of myself yet only to a certain extent quite a lot of things happen when I make gestures I'm not to happen unconsciously you can see them yeah I may say Oh huge words and the contraband how to use those words or even the moment I'm of course yes so any amount of own cultural things occur in my conscious condition I've never wholly conscious of myself yeah while I'm trying for instance to elaborate an argument at the same time there are unconscious processes that continue perhaps a dream which I have had a last night yeah Oh a part of myself things of God knows want yeah Oh trip I'm going to take or all for such as such people I have seen all when I better say writing paper I'm continuing writing that paper in my mind without knowing it yeah you can discover these things say in dreams or if you are clever in the immediate observation of the individual then you see in the chest or in the expression in the face that there is enough bottom cause in early upon seeing something behind consciousness yeah so that you you have filed the feeling well that man has something up his sleeve and you can even ask him now what your what you're thinking all the time something else it is no conscious of it or he may be there of course great individual difference there are individual man basic knowledge of themselves of the things that o only themselves but even those people would be capable of knowing water is going on in their own torturous process they are not conscious of the fact that while they live a conscious life all the time a miss is played in the unconscious a means that the excess of a centuries yes namely archetypal ideas stream of archetypal ideas that goes on through one individual through the centuries yeah read it could it is like a continuous stream and that constant to the daylight in the great movements saying political movements or in spiritual movements for instance in the time before information people dreamed of the great change and that's the reason why such great transformations could be predicted if somebody has been clever enough to see what is going on in people's mind in the unconscious mind would be able to predict it transistor I have predicted the not rising in Germany through the observation of my children patience yes they had dreams in which the whole thing was anticipated and and with considerable detail and I was already absolutely sure in the years before Hitler before Hitler came in the beginning oh well I could say the year in 1919 I was sure that something was happening in Germany something very big and very Qatar salty and I only knew it so the to the observation of the populace is it there is something very particular in the different nations this is a peculiar fact that the archetype of the Audemars place a very great all in Western literature French and that goes action not in Germany yeah to have exceedingly few examples in Germany or to where the or no place or you know big that it becomes of the fact that not women not one woman is unless she spared as I'll come in fact Scottie at least she must have a title otherwise she has and so you see it is just as if in our mind you this is a bit rustic but it illustrates my point a Germany during our no women there is our doctor for professor occupation heart the grandmother what our indoor depend Father for the certain the daughter the sister no well is the idea now that is a enormous renewals important fact which shows that in the German mind there is going on the particular miss something very particular and sakura trees really should look out of these things but a they prefer to think that I am of orphans yeah now just in the same context injury this is of course a very interesting remarkable set of statements here how would you look at Hitler in this light would you see him as the personification as symbol of the Father no no you see I I couldn't possibly explain that very complicated oh the presence it is yeah the Euro figures or more people much broader than mind you did you see a bow he was a savior he was meant to be a savior that is why they put his photo on about the orders or somebody declare these two so that he is happy to that his eyes have beheld and now he can die in peace oh yes - do you miss you know now getting back to the idea the self in the cell incorporates he's unconscious factors the self incorporates he's not Carter self is merely a term that designates the whole personality because the whole personality of man is indescribable yes his consciousness can be described these unconscious can not be discussed because the unconscious as I must repeat myself is always unconscious yeah it is really important of knowing and so we don't know our our unconscious personality we have hints we have certain ideas but we don't know it really nobody can say we're man and it's that is the beauty of it you know it's very interesting cultures of man can reach for knows where they are they are going to make discoveries now another set of ideas which of course are very very well known in the world of course you have originated center around the the terms introversion and extraversion yeah I know that you're aware of the fact that these terms have now become so widely known the man of the street using these terms constantly describing his wife were his friends and so on and so forth become the most probably the most used psychological concepts by the laymen that we have both like the work complex experiment yes that's right well you see this simply practical because there are certain people who definitely are more influenced by their surroundings then by their own intentions while other people but there are other people who are more influenced by the subjective factor now he the subjective factor that's very characteristic was understood by poet as a sort of pathological auto autism yeah now this is a mistake you know we have tightly has two conditions two important conditions one is they invite environmental influence and the other is the given fact of the the of the psyche as it is form the track is the by no means tabula rasa we have a definite mixture on combination of genes and they are there from the very first moment of our life and they give a definite character even to the little child and that is a subjective factor looked at for the outside now if you look at it from the inside yes then it is just so as if you would observe the world yeah when you observe the world you see people you see houses you see the sky you see tangible objects but when you observe yourself within you see moving images a world of images generally known as fantasies yet these fantasies are facts disease is a fact that the man has such a such a fantasy and this is such a tangible fact for instance that when a man has a certain fantasy another man may lose his life Oh a bridge is built these houses were all fantasies everything you do here all of houses everything was fantasy to begin with and the fantasy has a proper reality it is that is not to be forgotten fantasy is not nothing it is of course not a tangible object but it is a fact nevertheless it is see a form of energy yeah despite the fact because initially it is a manifestation of something and that is a reality that is just reality as for instance the peace treaty oversight or something like that it is no more you can't show it yes it has been a fact and so the cycle events are fact a reality and when you observe the stream of images within you observe an aspect of the world of the world within because the cycle you know if you understand it as a phenomenon that takes place in so-called living bodies then it is a quality of matter as our poor body consists of matter we discover that this matter has another aspect namely excited aspect and so it is simply the world from within seen from within it is just as if we were seeing in an order into another aspect of matter yes this is good idea that is not my invention that old Democritus already said thought of the spiracles in sectors namely the spirit that is inserted in atoms psyche is a quality that appears in matter doesn't matter what we send it or not but this is the conclusion we come to if we and so you see the man who is going by the external world by the influence of the external shape Society or perceptions sense perceptions things that he he is more valid you know because this is valid this is real and the man who goes by the subjective factor it's not valid because subjective factor is nothing no that night is just as well paced because he is based on the basis himself upon the world from within and so he is quite right even if he says oh it is nothing but my fantasy and course at least that's the introvert is always afraid of the external world he will tell you when you ask him you will be apologetic about it you of course yes I would in my fantasies and angeas always resentment and that's the world in general particularly America extroverted like hell because he doesn't know what a tip be holds the world on bidet and that gives him dignity and that means in certainty because it is nowadays particularly the world hands and that is psyche of man assume that certain fellows in Moscow the whole world is in fire hunt yeah it is nowadays we are selected by elementary catastrophes there is no such thing as an h-bomb that is all knives doing we are today attention cyclists pay attention what if something goes home with HIV and Josie it is demonstrate to us in our days what what the power to psyche is oh man how important is to do something about it but we know nothing about it no nobody would would give credit to the idea that the practical processes of the ordinary man have any importance whatever one things oh we have just what he has in his head he uses all these warehouse verifed any other ideas that that's the Tate mistake because he is just that as which is born and he's not going to stop as a reality yes now of course one of the very common I think misconceptions have you worked among some of the writers of America and then they had sort of characterized your discussions of introversion and extraversion and suggesting that the world was made up of only two kinds of people introverts and extroverts on the other and I'm sure you've been aware of in many of our people looking at this way and of course we like to comment about that in other words would you perceive the world being made up of holy people or extreme introverts people that are extreme extrovert world is a Bismarck one-sheet God me protect me against my friends with my enemies I can't allow myself alone you know you know how people are they have a take actual world and then everything is chemicai so long that war there is no such thing as a pew like stop shooting such a man this is those are all the terms to designate a certain portion so the tendency which is the tendency to be more influenced by environmental influences or more by dissipating that's all and you see there are people who are very well balanced and of just as much evils from within and without yes and so with all the definer classifications you know they're sort of wide over there points for orientation certainly then this whole matter of extremes that were next version it just as you did you say it's sort of a scheme a schematic approach to sort of hang an idea an approach but there would be at least a ridiculous it seems even told my whole scheme of of typology it's merely a sort of orientation namely there is such a factor as introversion there are such a factors extra burst the classification of individuals means nothing nothing at all it is only the instrument are you there forces I called practical psychologist to explain for instance a husband to a wife or vice versa Frances it is very often the case to thought almost see it is almost the rule but I don't want to make too many rules here in order not to be schematic yeah that in an introvert marriage the next about for compensation Oh another type Marriage Encounter type to to complement insult winces well doctor universe tied in with your typology and quotation marks of introversion extroversion we first know your concepts thinking feeling sensation and intuition and of course will be variables need to hear some expansion of the meaning of these particular terms and related to the extrovert dichotomy well there's quite a simple explanation of these terms and it shows at the same time how I arrived at such a technology in every sensation tells you that there is something thinking roughly speaking what it is feeling tells you whether it is agreeable or not to be accepted or not accepted or rejected yes and intuition are there is a difficulty yes you don't know ordinarily how intuition works so when a man has a hunch you can't tell exactly how he got at a touch or where that hunch comes form it is something funny about intuition I will tell you a little story I had two patients the man was a sensation type and the woman was an intuitive type of course they felt attraction and so they took a little boat and went out to the lake of Zurich and there were those birds that dive off the fish yeah and they'd offer certain time to come up again and you can tell where they come up and so they began to pit who first was the first to see the bird now you would think that the one who observes reality very carefully the situation type would of course we not yet not at all the woman won the bet completely she beat she was beating him on all points because my intuition she knew it before I think now how is it possible well sometimes you know you and really find out how it works by finding the intermediate links it is a perception by intermediate links and you will get the result of that whole chain of associations yeah sometimes you succeed in finding out but more often you don't so my definition is intuition is a perception by ways or means of the unconscious that is as near as I can get that is a very important function because when you live on the primitive conditions a lot of unpredictable things are likely to happen and there you need your intuition because you cannot possibly tell by your perceptions by our sense perceptions water is going to happen for instance you are having impermeable force you only see you for a few steps ahead you go by the compass paps and you don't know what that is ahead it is unchartered country if you use your intuition then you have hunches and when you live under such primitive conditions you instantly are aware or conscious firstly there are places that are favorable there places that are not favorable you can't tell for your life what it is yeah but you can follow these researchers yes because anything can happen and quite unforeseen things choices at the end of a long day you approach a river you don't know that there is a river yet when you are come to the river that is quite unexpected for miles there is no human habitation you cannot swim across its all full of crocodiles so what is he now such a obstacle hasn't been foreseen but it may be that you have had a hunch that you remained in in the last likely spot and that you wait for the following day that you can build a raft or something and sort or look out for possibilities you forges you also have intuitions in that constantly happens in our jungle called a city yeah you can have a hunch something is going home particular when you are driving an automobile yeah for instance you it is a day where nurses appear in the street yeah and and they always try to do to get something interesting like a suicide you know to be run over that's what bubbles apparently and and then you know you get a peculiar feeling and really at the next corner holidays the second nurse that runs in front of the automobile yeah you duplicity of cases you know that is will you know that such chance happenings coming groups yeah and so you see we are constantly we have constantly warnings hinge that of course is part in a in a slight feeling of uneasiness uncertainty fear now on the premium circumstances you will pay attention to you they mean something with us in our may I made absolutely apparently safe conditions we don't need a function so so very much yes yet we still use it so you find the iterative types first amongst bankers Wall Street men yeah the day follow hunches you know gamblers of all descriptions yeah you fight the type very frequently among doctors because it helps them in their poses sometimes a case can look quite normal as it where and you don't foresee any complications yet an inner voice tells you now look out here something not quite alright you know yeah you you cannot tell why and how but we have a lot of subliminal perception sense perceptions and for those we probably to all who deal of our intuitions but that is perception by the way of the unconscious yeah and you can observe that with an intuitive type C intuitive types very often do not perceive by their eyes of by their ears they perceive by intuition for instance once it happened that I had a woman patient in the morning at nine a book and see I often smoke my pipe and heresy surface smell of tobacco in doing what was she called and and so she she came and said but you begin earlier do you call it earlier but no you must have seen somebody at 8 o'clock I said how do you know that you've had been a man there that comedy to Papa very did you say oh well I just a hunch that must have been a gentleman with you this morning Oh Satya she was just like yeah yeah all the time you know the ashtray was at the firm nose and there was a hospice it all but she wouldn't notice it yeah so is he the intuitive he's the type that doesn't she doesn't see the stumbling block before his feet but but he's hot for 10 miles yes do you make a distinction between an intuitive extrovert an intuitive in improv oh yes all these types cannot for example more specifically what would be an example or difference between an intuitive extrovert and an intuitive introvert well you know the you have chosen somewhat difficult case you know because they one of the most difficult type system to it a Pinto yeah the intuitive X over to find the moment of spankers yes yes yes that is quite understandable at the interval this is the interval the variety is more difficult because he has intuitions as to the subjective factor namely the in the world and of course that is now very difficult to decide because what he sees are most uncommon things and he doesn't like to talk if he's not the fool because he would spoil his all game by telling what he sees because people won't understand it yes for instance once I have a patient a young woman about 20 2708 and first words well when I have cheated her said you know doctor I come to you because I have a snake in my abdomen what yes a snake black snake coiled up I think the in the bottom of my up dome and I must have made a hot face you know I don't mean it but I should change was a snake it was a say now is he our further conversation a little later was that she said that was about in the middle of our treatment that only lasted for 10 consultations she had foretold me I come 10 times and then it's all right I said how do you know oh I got a hunch is it yeah and and really about the fifth or sixth hour she said a doctor I must tell you the snake has arisen it is now about here hunch and then in on the 10th day I said now this is our last hour and do you feel cured and she said beaming she said you know this warning it came up and came out of my mouth and the head was cold I tell those were her last words now visit that same girl when it came to training when it comes to reality she came to me because she couldn't hear the step of her over her feet anymore yeah because she walked on air she couldn't hear it right in her and when she came to me asking for her her address and then she said oh poor George so and so well it is not just Carl called boss yogurt it is a sort of partial and it is yeah it's a very nice place you is enough to hold a young girls there very nice and very lively young girls and they have a Merry time I often wish they would invite me to their merry evenings as it but damn you sat all alone oh no there are plenty of young gentlemen coming in and they have a beautiful time but I never invite me it turned out that it was a private portal yeah she was perfectly decent good family not from here she don't know how and and she was totally unaware that those were all prostitutes and say for heaven's sake Hugh to a very dark place did you get out of it sensation yes see reality yeah but she had punches like anything until game oh yeah now is he such a person cannot possibly speak of of her experiences yes because everybody would think she's absolutely crazy yeah I might help us what's quite shocked when I thought for heaven sake is that case excuse Afridi huh yeah you don't hear that kind of speech but she assumed that the old man of course knows everything at the evenness understands such kind of language so is he if when were already in intuitive the introverted intuitive would speak what he really perceives then party we know but evidence and he would be misunderstood and so they learn to keep things to themselves and you hardly ever hear them talking of these things that is a great disadvantage but it is an enormous advantage another way gotta speak of the experience a God in that respect but also in human relations trances they come into the presence of somebody they don't know and certainly they have been a religious and he was inner images give them a more or less complete information about the culture of the Papa ya know that this but it of case can also happen that they come into play into the presence of somebody who they don't know at all not from God and they know an important piece out of the bell of you that person yes and not the world and tell the story and identification the fire yes you see it's all the the introverted intuitive is has it in a way a very difficult life although one of the most interesting drives but it is difficult often to get into the confidence you know yeah because you say they're afraid that people will think the two things they in that are interesting to them or write to them strange to the own individual a psychologist should know more of such things you see yes see when when people make psychology as a psychologist ought to do well it the very first question is she extroverted the oil change if you look at entirely different things yeah it's a sensation type in she's intuitive type is she's thinking is she feeling that because it is things are complicated that they are there still more complicated because the introvert think for instance is compensated by extraverted feeling yeah by inferior extroverted archaic ixora of the feeling yeah so an interval to think may be very cool in his feeling like for instance the introvert philosopher that is always carefully avoiding women will be mild by his cook in the end now in other words then we can take your introvert extrovert categories and in a sense go through describing a sensation introvert type sensation extrovert type thinking introvert type thinking type and so on and each case and it stems from really not real categories but simply as you say an approach something to sort of help us in our study a model it is just a sort of a skeleton to which you have to add the fresh or say you it is a country mapped out you know by variation points and that doesn't mean the country consists of triangulation points yeah that is only in order to to have an idea of the distances and so it is a means to an end it only makes sense such a scream when when you have when you deal with practical creations of course you're familiar with the work of dr. JB Ryan do knish and of course some of his work in extrasensory perception and clairvoyance as he called wishes mental telepathy and so forth some of the descriptions in his work sound quite a bit at times like intuitive operated and in terms of your knowledge of this work would you say that a person who has clairvoyance in a sense would then be an intuitive type person in his experiment more likely that's quite true or it can be a sensation type say an X about the sensation type that is very much influenced by the unconscious I see because he he has introverted intuition in here some cultures see there are two groups see the rational group and the irrational the rational group is thinking and feeling because the ideal thinking is a rational result feeling also a rational result rational values yes that is differentiated feeling whereas sensation must needs being irrational because it may it may not prejudice facts yes he it shall know positive facts the real ideal perception is that you have an accurate perception of the things as they are without addition of Corrections on the other side the intuition does not look at the things as they are that is prison that is another motive your intuition it looks Oh ever so shortly at the things are say are and makes off into gorgeous process at the end of which we have seen something nobody else would have seen now so is it is people who yield the best results are always those people were interrupted or interval the intuition comes in but gee that is a side aspect of it it is not interesting yeah did they have a question with another question form of energy maybe that the terms they use Hein himself use is very coalition that's a talk they mean nothing at all yeah there was but he thinks he say something when you say is deliberately yeah that's something our the word itself is not a description of the process that means nothing now of course a lot of the things that you're describing I think often scientists will say Melissa's due to chance chance occurrences chance factors and Ryan don't work in statistical methods we find this happening more often than would be expected by chance wait was he he boost that it is more of a chance yeah it is statistically gospel yeah and that is the important point yeah and that hasn't been contradicted yeah you see there was such a cruel SAP happened that happened in England the Banshee oh that's not secret but this work exactly yes discussion yeah what you call Casey noches Casey yeah would be the definite case for definite case you know you know yeah just that yeah but that means nothing you see the point is that it is more than than merely probable yeah it is not it is it is beyond chance and that just at a problem and but you know people hate such organs that can't deal with that concrete even behind because it is a relative ation now I'm going to say something which in in these sacred homes is an optimal male activation of time and space through the psyche that's the packet and that is where the light has made evident yeah that's all of that well may I may I go a little further and for some of your recent work which is indeed very profound and it is not too well known to many of our students is emotional and of course is over there HCC and because my books are at least sold I'm referring now to the the concept of synchronicity which you have described and which would have some relevance at this point in our discussion would you care to comment a little bit on that it's all free comic opera human wouldn't know where to where to begin of cotton is this kind of of thinking has been started long ago and when wine poured out these results I thought now we have at least a more or less dependable basis to all the world you know but the offering was not understood because it's really very very difficult you know there are plenty of facts in the observation of the unconscious where you come across cases of a very peculiar kind of event namely that say I have a certain thought or a certain definite subject is occupying my attention my just at the same time something else quite independently happens that portrays just that thought yes now this is nonsense you know from looked at from a closer point of view that it is not nonsense is made evident by the results of my experiments there is a probability it is something more than chance that such a case occurs now I have I never made statistical experiments to accept one in the in the way of mine I have made one for for another purpose but I have come across quite the number of cases whether it was most study to find that to cause a change happens at the same time but in dependence upon upon each other so that you could say do you have nothing to do with each other of course it's right here Francis we'll just so I speak of a overhead car and it that moment a red car comes here collision yes now I hadn't seen it it was impossible because you got behind the building it is moment the red car appears now this is was a good has clear George arrives experiment proves that these cases are not mere charges of course many of these things are occurrences where we cannot apply such an argument otherwise it would be superstitious we can say now this car has appeared because he was so very box have been made about the red car yes it's not causal effect this is a miracle that a red car appears there's not a discharge just charge but these John's has happened more the more often the Jones allows yes and that shows saturation will be rounded yeah so he in the aisle has a whole Institute and with many co-workers yes and has the means we have no easier you know one that had no means to make such experience otherwise I probably would have done them but I teachers was physically impossible so I do content must have this year observational facts I began an examination of the human attitudes mainly how our consciousness functions I couldn't help see in foreign city people speaking further than the one assumes that things evolved along the line of the successful the other assumes that seems evolved along the ride of our tribe and there I was I was in between the two with a treaty justification of our school but others to see the same for art and I knew that there are plenty of other ways in which things could be envisaged as why I considered by scientific unity to channel first in the tradition of the human consciousness that is the originator of ways of visiting it is the factor that produces attitudes conscious attitude to work so when you know for instance that there are people losing and you can take and and so on you know the one since this the earth sees that and I tried to find out what the principal the principal differences where and that is to talk about the tags as of course is introverted extroverted attitude then the functional aspect now my did me these four functions were not a scheme a heavy blanket and apply to psychology on the contrary I took me quite a long time to discover that there is another type what is thinking type as I said my type is of course statistician many people decide the same problems I have to decide the entirety from television entirety controls I have entirely different values for purchase feeding types and so after a while I discovered cattle very much cover it took me over a year to become somewhat clear about the existence of eternity facts and the last and the most unexpected was the cessation type and only later when I saw that those are actually the core aspects of conscious orientation you can increase the number of principles but I found the most simple ways we are talking AB City by 4 is simple and actual division of a circle I didn't know the symbolism classification only when I saluted the archetypes I became a worker in the study of the typesetting issues certainly as to the personal nature of the unconscious person quality of the unconscious in the given case specific an extrovert well his unconscious has been an integral ecology because all the extra multiple needs of raising consciousness and and the intellect in the important therefore it has its own authority to only the conscience value spent my patience well professor young we have been discussing many of these very fundamental ideas in theory such as animal and I must and of course being representative of the whole idea archetype that you explained it so interestingly and we talked a little bit about this construction of the eagle and the South and the persona as they involved in all of this and as we speak of course it began to point to the direction of the sort of question that is so important as we try to understand the individual and this centers around the problem of motivation why the person does what he does now to a great degree we've already talked about this when you talked about archetypes and and this whole matter now in the work of dr. Freud he spoke of libido as an energy and earlier we spoke of libido and the fact that you thought that it was more than just sexual energy he saw that I could to be something much broader now you have certain principles about psychic energy which are indeed very provocative now one other principle and I believe you referred to as a principle of entropy entropy [Music] - yeah - and so something similar is the case in psychology that [Music] [Music] because energy manifestation [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] in America today now what is might be calling historical view where we try to look in the history development of individual answers to why you doing certain things at the moment yes then we have another view which was postulated discussed by dr. Kurt Levine which is sort of a field theory he thinks that the history [Music] to the past present and immediate purposes [Music] [Music] yeah [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] so I've explained to him that he has an unconscious is a manifestation of it we succeed in a large degree we might get an idea about that make things like [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] because you're compensated relation to consciousness and [Music] yes so you see that in a sense in this situation the the unconscious plays a very important part the unconscious we just found the dream but as you see it then is not necessarily the [Music] [Music] [Music] now if the unconscious acts on the present situation now looking at this thing in elevational motivational which is now looking at the unconscious in this way this is if you say it sometimes we know but trying to do just that well just there's an illustration what a particular individual we might say we've been brought up in a and a culture such as the culture of India the particular and we worked if we could examine his unconscious in between because [Music] [Music] [Music] the links between the personal unconscious and the collective unconscious then is that the personal is could be more involved with the immediate life of the individual and the collective would be universal [Music] they have collective problems yes collective convictions and so on now we are very much influenced by them whether you belong to a certain political party or to a certain contraction and that can be a serious determinant of your behavior yes now as well as a personal conflict doesn't touch upon it say to the question a political question or any other social question which really matters to you then you have productive dreams for the moment think of an actual case perhaps the patient or a friend in which you might show us rather specifically how the personal and the collective unconscious were acting you say his neurosis or perhaps in any problem that he may have blamed you and I [Music] [Music] justice if now that is what you see [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] the individual is it possible things that trouble them and cause tension that here oppresses now these things that here oppresses will become part of the personal he doesn't drink press consciously always these things disappear disappear Android experience a fire actually question yeah but you can prove these things never have been conscious why didn't the people say whether this is very compatible these conscious attitude [Music] so you see these things that are having emotional so that they can appear they can disappear at wish this is with the protections for instance people say don't make projections because the unconscious has is he conscious the pair of instructions in my inaudible yeah I I see the majority of that was my first point of litigation before yeah I saw a conciliation experiment that certain contractors quite certainly not replace they simply wouldn't appeal so in looking at the so-called defense mechanisms that the Orthodox psychoanalyst speak of like objection rationalization and so on and so forth then in a sense the way you would differ from the orthodox psychoanalytic view oh yes you would not say them that they are a repressed type of way of defending a manner in which the ego was being defended the rally would say it there they were already there they're simply manifestations of patterns that are already present in [Music] in a great deal of our fundamental aspects of European writing and first-person and getting some of your reactions fundamental ideas or so that have seized many of them will not have an opportunity to study regularly work might sort of be introduced to you personally with your first is the best way they possibly could be now this as one looks over your work what is the press with a much broader school Horsham being just the beginning fundamental outline of a theory of personality well you psychology you can't help noticing that man doesn't advance a quality doesn't only consist of the ramifications of instinct instance of the only determinant of any order and the study of man from his priority aspect only is Packard insufficient to the same even psychology it is absolutely necessary that you study man or who social and so you have to consider for instance the fact that there are different kinds of society different kinds of nations different traditions and the purpose is absolutely cut 1/3 of you from many strengths most horses no because naturally thus when I after my association experiments when I realized that there is obviously an unconscious the question arose now what is this unconscious does it consist merely of rest so for eminence of conscious activities unconscious with other words is the unconscious factor in itself and that must be because I observed when the game started for instance people schizophrenic patients practices contain which I possibly have acquired our qualities this depends upon the fact that the child is not wrong tabula rasa but it is a pleasant mixture of a combination of the dynamic [Music] [Music] now that is one side of the picture the other side of the picture is in collection with others that the combination of qualities and that is no because the environmental influences adult objective factors the general social conditions euros convictions [Music] since of dealing with things now there are story reasons why things are say all reasons for the qualities of the child that is cool as tattoos that real understanding of excitement so when I want my first controlling these are Co Co Co shoes certain idea of first you brought up many many very close very interesting provocative ideas here as you have a course in your many many and of course running through the personal unconscious erase unconscious itself the Eagle the persona the energy principles such as we mentioned entropy and equivalence and silences in a sense the first and second law in trying to [Music] total future realization in the whole so they'd be very important that not mistaken we'd like to comment a little bit upon this this process of individuation [Music] something quite simple it take an acorn put it into the county that is man well it's tried out throwing his ideas on here have you ever brings him the possibility and ask his opinion about the pathway the relativity might apply to slightly function did he ever discuss that with a man is so concentrated producible own idea when he's a mathematician yeah yeah idea if you ever brings him the possibility and ask his opinion about the pathway the relativity might apply to psychic function did he ever degenerative stuff that that a man is so concentrated producer own idea he's a mathematician yeah Anto forever yeah you all know the way to cook yes that's right what year was it that you were friends with Einstein I listen to those I couldn't understand so there was a chance to observe some of my own ideas yeah was this after he'd already formally the relativity theory or just before it was just when he when he in your dealings with we with Professor koibito isshu romantic contact with him history oh yes Jesus ideas about the light of civilizations but who's buying archetypal forms what I mean by the historical functioning of archetypal developments that loss for centuries or for thousands of years and expresses that symbol of the red store yeah no it's a America right now for about at least 2,000 years so America is a sort of nuclear fleet as much as as most of the money is in the hands of women you know white the white movement including our Anita and these service windows and it's encased in the square that I didn't [Music] [Music] appears as archetype we showing the possibility of a cent which is not I called my now speaking of this fatality which you say is unifying the self and of course that used to get here the mandala is very important archetype symbolizing this balance I believe is of course sometimes we try in psychology to start from whatever totality does exist in the individual and try to serve them look into underlying motivation and we have briefly units a great deal certain types of testing and we call projective tests and as you've already suggested and we all know her first very well that you certainly played a major role in developing this point of view which is where dissociation method and of course the great degree another very interesting development of course with all 1922 urban run shot develop his glider Rorschach test now first of all to even talk a little bit more about what associations work we talked a little bit about it already we heard these comments on it we'd like to get it with if we could get into it a little bit more detail now first of all what are the ingredients of the word association test what what what was involved and use of it whatever young man of course I patience I didn't know what to say yeah and the association Iran has given me a chance to offer access I learned about the things that is not 13 yeah and I go to a deep insight into they think not know yeah now would you say that from responses and you say complexes in sort of a more complex I know to Quebec yeah yeah now you hope from these complexes or in most of the blocks of you uncovered as you administer this test to get it materials of the personal on taxes or the ratio in taxes or all over the factory in the beginning about my questionable associations that's like a whole orientation tenses ideas of course great deal by introversion extraversion ideas I was an autumn are you familiar with this test that you've seen just test the Rorschach test because I later on of course I didn't apply the exact examination of trakula reactions we do say for example the [Music] initially Kannamma now that's all the way in which you cover their emotions and so on yeah you see like an ordinary conversation but seen and measured in its principles observe all the things you observe in the conversation versus you ask people something you discuss certain things and we observe little hesitations in the states in speech so all that comes to the four thousand and miserable you know I think over 80 Kentucky I have a few personal pages of title Kirkus matter of psychics tubercular cases and so on first guess a particularly interesting we're talking a lot about understanding what when did you first become interested in the psychic factors tuberculosis was many years ago when did you first become interested in these psychic factors of the Burkle Osasuna canopy yeah solutely now the the point that this leads to very logically is the point I start making a moment I'm sorry to interrupt you but you see this is very much the height of a lot of our thinking today the area that we call psychosomatic medicine yes where we are now right now becoming more and more interest in the very thing you're saying how these emotional how are you I'm conscious how the pretty naughty families can actually find effect on the body mm-hmm and of course the classic examples in the United States in the past have been for example the peptic ulcer but they believe this is the case of where these emotional factors that actually created the Fallon T in the run here and of course we've extended these ideas into many for example field where there already is pathology the things emotional factors can intensify it mm-hmm not only had it created but it can intensify existing pathology or sometimes there may be actually symptoms of ethology without their patterns now for example many of our physicians or as you say alienists in America say that 60 or 70 percent of their patients are not individuals will have anything that really physically is wrong with them but they have disorders that are psychosomatic services and tuberculosis would be one example when you are now of course very interested in further research in this matter in the United States for that matter in other parts of world what do you have any ideas as to why the patient selects this type of symptom for a proper widening of course in a sense unconsciously hawai is elected you don't believe that there is any way of tracing any personality individual a reason that is an extraordinary exaggeration of the importance office okay I think now in the whole matter of psychosomatic medicine and even even cancer the fact that cancer may have why could I not psychogenic and some of the studies that for example in the United States show that for example Jewish women practically never get cancer in the vaginal region is where were often to get cancer in the breast region has one example and managing can be found out about Hansel I'm sure Merced was also questioned how to completely think anything is possible any disease has attracted a try close a compartment and you all depends perhaps life depends upon it whether you three such a patient psychological try philosophy is the proper way oh yeah yeah okay whoa you gotta have an infectious disease exciting because of psychological in this physical position why then I'm using when it is establishing there's a few hundred lapses you cannot do it right psychology it's quite possible that you can avoid automatic medicine is pretty old stuff you're not at all surprised on the new developing for instance I published 15 years ago [Music] Rosen who didn't even know whether your host Robin Robin sorted for some alteration you see everyone who says that I'm [Music] well professor Hume in our several indicators in so far a great deal of our talk has been from a very fundamental aspects of your appearing in writing and of course purpose and and getting some of your reactions to these fundamental ideas or so that our students many of them will have not had an opportunity to study a great healty work my sort of the introduce to some of your ideas knew personally with you first is the best way they possibly could be now this as 1 MUX over your work one of the press with a much broader school person being just the beginning fundamental outline of a theory of personality well of course when you study human psychology you can't help noticing that man doesn't man psychology doesn't only consist of the ramifications of instinct instance of aren't the only determinants of any order and the study of man from his priority aspect only is back or insufficient to the percent in psychology it is absolutely necessary that you study man or social environment and so you have to consider for instance the fact that there are different kinds of society different kinds of nations different traditions and the purpose is that one treats from many strengths and which is most considerable thoughts naturally thus when I after my association experiments when I realized that there is obviously an unconscious the Krishna who's now what is this unconscious does it consist merely of rest super admins of conscious activities active in forever unconscious with other words is the unconscious factor in each child and that unconscious must be in itself because I observed time and again that it for instance people streams or schizophrenic patients contain which I couldn't possibly have acquired this depends upon the fact that the child is not wrong tabula rasa but it is a pleasant mixture of a combination of leads seem to contain cheesy dynamic certain behavior they have a tremendous importance also got the arrangement of the charcoal to tighten to in as much as it did as much as it appears it has certain qualities it has a certain character and now that is one side of the picture the other side of the picture is in correction because that combination of qualities and that is now because the environmental influences deputy general social conditions no convictions [Music] there are strong reasons why people say all for the qualities of the title that is such a thing as tattoos that real understanding of the title must coexist [Music] [Music] so when I want my first confirming these are called guilty unconscious [Music] nature of the unconscious to me it was very complicated picture and my material in my material was home chiefly by genetics and there I have observed that there are people in the beginning of disease of fantasies into conscious life transition for the entire unexpected so most quite confused by and he gets into a sort of panic because whenever people as thoughts thoughts actions that they are quite strangely and equally strange to the properties that man is crazy I thought it to be related the Costco Jakarta to elucidate that's in the point into consciousness the voices delusions are you talking you support over fifty years ago and the one that you know what these things really well because I thought that these these things have too much sense so what I did then was I studied the thesis of psychogenic diseases like Buddhism and such things well the content is going from the unconscious we're in a chemical conditioning and a sellable condition and then I saw that in contradistinction to the it's of relics the mental contents of hysterics we're human understandable elaborate traumatic suggestion a second concern ality that is not a clear schizophrenia the fantasies on the contrary are systemic control chaotic and you cannot move out a second personality I just passed occasions where I came up delusions that were not exactly hysterical because they were singularly difficult to describe sort of strange options and and I thought that a better understanding so I took the opportunity when professor from the old professor of psychology philosophy at University of Chile wrong many published a case of an American girl who had bestowed upon him a series of halfway and Manteca fantasies without commenting imagination now when I write all fantasies I saw this is exactly the material and I was also bit afraid when I tell people when I tell of my personal experiences the patient's that I will say oh this is a real suggestion you know I took that case because I actually had no hand in it it was an authority it was a friend of William James fine woman he would be accused of that's right also in having influenced the patient that is the reason why I analyzed these fantasies and that they became then that this became the object of all to call this a quality of cultures it is called now symbolism of transformation and I have realizes over forty or forty years and then I I try to show that the there is a sort of unconscious I then simply call the real conscious that clearly produces things which are historical and not personal yes it was mythological material the nature of which not by the patient and there I try for the first time to produce a picture of the functioning of the unconscious functioning which allows certain conclusions as to the nature of unconscious [Music] already now that was a problem a pathological problem of the very first order and that made me think confused because who love philosophy how this has not yet recognized this fact that we have a counter actually in our own cultures that in our psyche there are two consciousness is one fact and there is another factor equally important that is your conscience that can in Wisconsin any tiny pleases and of course I thought I said to myself now this is very uncomfortable because I think I am the only master in my house but I must admit that somebody in that house that can play Thanks and I had to deal with the unfortunate victims of that interference every day in my patients so the next thing I wrote was in 1980 maybe a disc musician about the relation between the group ante unconscious where I tried to emulate the experiences that are normally observable in cases where consciousness is exposed to unconscious or where your conscience is considered as an autonomous factor that has educated seriously where one cannot they would doesn't say anymore or the value they are conscious by assuming it is nothing but it is copyright not of producers it is a factor in its own dignity and under the very important factor because it had the most horrible disturbances now when that was a I wrote public interaction nobody understood it I saw that the reason why nobody understands it is that right nobody has it the similar experience because the the question hasn't been consumed to such a and namely that one has taken your country seriously and considered it as a real determination that means with the whole stem the connection to the past that actually abnormal because man is not one specific historical setting with the specific historical qualities and therefore enjoy the country when he has a related as if you were formed without eyes and ears when you are poor when you are growing up with no connection apart from the metal with the center of natural times during no corner Tunica thought we can write it out on Tatia Tatia now I kind of and I saw that girl has lost the connection with the past has lost with the fact that her fat father was a certain that he lived in the mix and father was out falling out of the pool so I I think between which was useful for so many years of pattern because because I knew that that is absolutely love to talk about in the middle of things that you are not come not need no central what estate is our existence you know when we even when we are just average the more who maybe the gravity numbers is the more you destroy our society Jaggi the state senator you know our whole life ghosty blazer absolutely a husband thank you similar kind and that happened that holy lady on 200 pounds study of the artifact so professor Jung so you began to see in a sense your typology led to a sort of ethereal in psychology of opposites that the conscious would reveal one side of type and the unconscious would be the other side this was being a very important way than about the analyzer understand the individual mostly what practical point of view wasn't wrong well the point I wanted to reduces it is you know in analyzing a patient you maybe there is a sort of typical way in which the integration of consciousness that takes place then the average way is that through the analysis of Dreams for instance you become acquainted with the contents of their cultures I already told you this to begin with all personal material subjective questions questions of individuals difficulties in adapting to environmental conditions observation that occupations emotions their own worlds hands over his personal complexes then you get slowly and nearly really into the situation of of a sort of authority a point of you become a point of reference you know you are in possession of all the important items in a in a person's development remember currencies are no eyes very well-known American politician and he told me you can see the preview located within a fortnight now you think that shows that the things people hand out [Music] many countries on the import the emotionally important then they hand out themselves they hand out a big emotional value as if they were handing over a large sum as if they were trusting you with this the administration of the respect yes until retiring your hand in technology that creates an emotional relationship to the enemies and that is what was called the platform yes which is a central problem of [Music] associated with all the important persons in the light operation now the most important persons are usually cross our border yeah that comes up from childhood the first handing over your memories about the father about the mother you had ordered the image of her employer they need his chest as if the doctor takes the place of the father I had quite a member of Maine patients that called me mother you because the handed over the moccasin yeah Spidy respecting the personality of the of the animals the sympathies regarded the functions are sitting rather motor or retorted with her father of central authority and now that is welcome cold strands such as laser tivities of transfer of projection now person exactly call it project because it's idea of handing over a disease transferring the disease upon an animal or handing over the scene upon escape code as capitated out into the face of the matrix disappear yeah so they hand all of themselves in the hope that I can swallow that stuff and digest for them as I am endo will go in loco parentis and have a high authority naturally I'm also persecuted right because for the resistances all the manifold the emotional reactions they have had against now that is stuff you have to work through first in analyzing not really estimate is dependent upon the doctor like a patient there's an open abdomen on the operations of the paperwork so theythey must be finished and so we had worked through that condition in the hope that we arrived honor is a situation where the patient is able to see that I'm not the father Horn of the motor that I and a normal human being now everybody naturally should assume that such a thing would be possible to institute that the patient could arrive at such an inside very sort of fantasies but that is very often not the case so I had a very good mind whoever could expect easily that you would perchรฉ was actually unable to get out of history and it's exactly what one always had recourse to disease one mister some people would ask about my father but I just feel like that it is like that under the values is what the unconscious is now the office for nice to know she was a little increased about sitting on my knees I editor in my arms I was a very tender part of the little girl you know and and more and more things became happy in that respect then we that are also sort of child quite a little girl in the hands of the new feeling and the last three of that year it was a totally all the rings was that I write for home I have a child and a hit here in my room like a baby and the wind was blowing over that feasibly now you know when the wind is blowing over we can eat wait in the wind and which means ways i swayed like that cooking her as if it were to see you know and she inside I was altered and that's also this is what you want and what you project into you because you are not conscious of it this you have the idea of a date you don't process therefore you see factly because you know she had and so many disappeared from the world that were advocating real personal and under the misconception of the world was nanak see a town but you see the idea operation is not an intellectual idea it is an archetype is an archetype driving it therefore you you find it practically everywhere on the controller remain you know even if it has a name honor and all the powerful extraordinary and so he certainly became aware of an entirely he's an image that comes right from the archetype she had not these idea for Christian God or over your Old Testament he of a a god of nature vegetation he was the weekly insult in the spirit of the week the spirit of the wind and she was in the arms of that human no no that is the living experience of an archetype now that means a tremendous in closer contact oh and it's quick she saw what she really was missing that missing value was was in the form for protection in myself and knew myself indispensable and then she saw he's not indispensable because it is a supreme she is of the idea now that is a luminous experience and that is the things that an archetypal experience that which value they depend upon our conditions that depend upon these are their desires their inclusions depend upon other people because they have no value in themselves that have nothing in themselves they are wholly irrational and and they are not in the construction of a triangle that would make dependence but when dr. can hold that experience then she doesn't depend anymore it cannot depend anymore because that value is in hotel and liberation add a piece of thought make her concrete you know in as much as it I realized such a new experience machine is able to continue whole path her way her immigration to account and determine an oak and not a donkey nature will take the scene will become that which is on the beginning now having seen such cases but a number of such that of course because I began to see that in structure of what I can call the collective own fortress is really a sort of a combination of which each has a luminous quality you know the archetypes are at the same time dynamic they are that they are always there and they produce certain forces in the unconscious the one root best compared with that's the origin of mythology now having seen such cases quite a number of experiments that of course because I began to see that the structure of what I can call the collective own fortress is really a sort of agglomeration of such of which each has a luminous quality you know the archetypes are at the same time dynamic they are that are not intellectually invented they are always there and they produce certain forces in the unconscious the one truth test compared with that's the origin of mythology Authority is announcing of series of images that formulates the life of archetypes of many plays and so on authors which is a necessity because man is not complete it is not confused of that aspect of things so a man is not complete when he lives in the world of the statistical truth he must live in a world of his biological that assists by an author who sadly not expression of what as what he fills out so he come with a result and authority no no and the Paris of life of change mix everything do and of course that of course is is most unbecoming of the most important experience of your life where there is fear there only coverage that nobody quite quite strange do you think that the humanity what I see what an education without humanity's history to man the connection with family as it were that means witness the whole stem uses it to try the connection to the past that he lives in that in which man always to be born today and to live it actually abnormal because man is not born every day these runs form in the Pacific historical setting which is specific install of equalities and therefore is only complete when he has a related to sitting senator as if you were formed without eyes in years video for when you are growing up with no connection to the path problem met with the center of natural times during no connection at all to can write it out and that is that is and then I saw the girl has lost the connection with the past has lost the fact that the fat of our society that we live in the me and further without further out of these two so I our existence you know when we even when we are just average the more gravity numbers the more you Jaggi the state Senate races go to Russia our whole life coach blazer actually he has kind and that has actually led me on to the profound study of the artifact removal respectful appetizer but now if I go taken into account that is an enormous factor very important development for our well-being now I was now where in where in the world has anybody has ever sought very well control solution to the problem of archetypes and made a particular philosophy of people as every voting makes a Kakuna philosophy is when it cost of forces naively and doesn't know that those are structural elements of your conscience crikey and now today we certainly fall into that hole and are controlled by the problems of the collective unconscious which were then the zombies in between you know something that leads at the remote part in now that has given me no no window of work but the result was more satisfactory because it showed the development of our English and conclude relations to the collective of cultures and evaluations our consistent pattern become widely known cultural cultural codes in such phenomena as psychical phenomena and the cultural aesthetic issues just as so what epidemic of typhoid fever replacing out everything out in system for his fever isn't that marvelous we can take on in August and mentions a nobody knows anything about it nobody takes care of the or the water supply nobody thinks of examining something like that what's infestation considered normal yes and to me of course it was in the news room because it is a factor that has determined the face of millions of European people and of American nobody can deny that he has been influenced by by the war that's all history and that's all that ecology our food is high quality but we only come to an understanding of these things when you understand the fact our yeah homie home is crazy so of course I can tell me in detail about the basis of our modern way of perceiving things and and therefore it is a zippe prayer right under the pressures of quarters a wonderful picture of how the development of archetypes that means the moon of archetypes looks when you look at em the magic form evolved they become today you packed it with parties you see how the present moment has evolved out of the matrix you know city of Costa cause it just reflects our community development as no sufficient wealth to the country's development Middle Ages and so easy in our days we have second search you'll also see that if you're content you have a big component and that we can see in the example of the alchemists philosophy that believes to work in the evil consciousness exactly like your conscience believes to ourselves and we can construct our coaches of our days when we know what it has been yesterday now that is in a development of my ideas to practice
