hey youtube i'm gonna be insulating my garage doors i have wood doors on my house i looked at having them replaced the two doors which are nine foot wide and some feet high would have cost me 6300 dollars plus some change i decided that for that price i was going to keep my doors they're functional they're wood doors they're original to the house the cost of wood doors are about the same or maybe even a little bit more than steel doors the ones i looked at were steel insulated and wood doors would not have been insulated i'm going to go ahead and save myself some money and insulate these doors check out the temperature of the doors from the inside center panel 99 degrees and then 0.999.5 right now we're outside we're going to take the temperature again same panel it's 136 degrees so the sun is taking this heating up the door and the driveways he is adding to that with the reflection and the radiant heat and then that's transferring into the garage at 99 degrees which will obviously heat the garage up in the winter time it's doing just the opposite since these doors are not insulated when it's 10 degrees out here or whatever temperature it may be it's going to do the same thing and cool the place down i'm going to measure my door on the inside these doors were manufactured in 1980 and what i found out is that the panel height was different for each one so measure your pounds before cutting to ensure that you're cutting to the correct dimension i like cutting on the foil side because it is this finished side and it ensures me a nice clean cut the other side is not going to be seen so if i make a mistake i'd rather make it on that side work i'm not using a straight edge [Music] i'm going to make all my cuts at one time that way i'll be able to be efficient with my time so basically cutting what i'd call a kit so each door will have all his pieces ready to go and i can move on from there to installation [Music] i have my center number two sides bit ready [Music] you can see that i'm basically flush with the door and i've added r value about three and a half then i'm going to put another layer on here like this all the way down and that will bring this 3.2 up to 6 4 and then you have the r value of the wood itself which they say is about 3. now that i finished cutting out the panels kit i am fitting them to the door around the hinges each panel has four hinges and so i want to get those cut out before i start assembling it for the final installation and this will make things go faster and i don't have to worry about creating any defects to the insulation that had been previously put up so now that i've done that i'm going to move on and clean the door i'll wipe it down so that the double back tape will stick to it i want to make sure that it has a good surface so i've done that putting the double back tape on and i'm ready to start the assembly the final installation of the insulation i'm not going to put the double back tape up too far i don't want to work ahead and keep moving door up and down unless i just prefer to do it just as i need to do it you know it just makes more sense to me but you can go ahead and do the whole door at one time or do it just the way i do it it really doesn't matter it's just how i i chose to do it during this process here make sure you push those insert panels in flush before you put that last layer of insulation in you don't want to have ripples or gaps that make it look deformed when you have your finished product so take the time to do that and run your hands over it after all the panels are in place i'm gonna start putting my screws and washers in and then i'm gonna tape the seams up on the panel and then the job will basically compete as far as the inside and then i just have to put the weather stripping on you can see how i've tightened down the fastener where i have a little crinkle pattern on the foil surface just want to get it tight enough to where this pattern develops but i don't want to go so far in that i break the foil surface here using a about a half inch washer give more areas more grip strength to it as well like the industrial look of it so pretty satisfied with that so there's the garage doors both of them are all done now we'll move outside and i'm going to work on this gap here that goes up and down the door i'm also going to put a bottom seal on and a top seal on the door and that will keep the wind out as well so not only am i trying to improve the r value of the door itself i'm also trying to stop the air from traveling in and out of the garage through the edges so i'll show you that i also replaced the seals here so my old side or seal really didn't have a seal on it was just a 1 by 3 piece of wood that was to keep you from seeing the end of the door it had absolutely no weather stripping on it so whatsoever this is a vinyl or pvc product here with a nice seal on it kind of overlapping up at the top i can trim down a little bit i put one down over the top as well so that's gonna really make a big difference as far as letting the the wind when it blowing getting in so cut down on the drafts as well as the insulated door all right so outside now we need a temperature and get this thing to show up 157 i mean that's hot alright it's 159 right there 54 in the shade 59 bottoms 160 let's go back inside real quick walk around here about the same area we're in four six look at that that's an amazing difference here [Music] so as you can see the foil is doing its jobs working wonderful just keeping the heat from transferring this is a two layer system i installed here some of the key points is that the foil on the first layer is facing outside and that's pushing it keeping the heat from coming in and the foil on the inside is facing towards the garage and that's keeping you know the heat that's inside the garage during the winter inside the garage you want to face some opposite directions when you install it six sheets of half inch rigid foam insulation some double back tapes fasteners and some washers i like the results i look forward to seeing what it's going to feel like differently in here when it is cold and during the winter time as far as keeping the place cool during the summer time it's obviously doing that so that's a really good sign i could have purchased the doors if i want to spend thousands of dollars but i don't think i would have got a return on that investment at all one thing i do like about the wooden doors that i haven't said before is that they don't dent so if somebody throws a ball hit someone something on the outside they're not going to dent like a steel door does so that's one of the big drawbacks as far as i'm concerned with steel doors thanks for watching the video hope it helped you good luck on your projects at home
