In today's video i'm going to insulate my garage  door why you might ask because this thing it gets   way too hot this door gets hot on  the outside it gets hot on the inside   it makes my whole garage hot in fact here  in las vegas in the shade it's 117 degrees let's jump right into this project instead of  using a white styrofoam to insulate the door or   even an insulation kit i'm going to be using poly  isofoam this is a construction grade foam that's   rigid because it has a foil backer on both sides  i'll talk a little bit later in the video about   why i chose this insulation here's the tools we're  going to be using today i've got my t-square for   my straight edge i've got a chalk line a finished  nail my razor blade and my tape measure and pencil   our supplies for today are eight four by eight  sheets of poly isofoam i've got a couple of rolls   of foil tape and i have 80 feet of lattice this  is one quarter inch by half inch and we're going   to use this for spacers here's the process  that we're using as we insulate these panels   i've got these wood spacers that hold the foam  away from the steel that way that heat doesn't   get conducted into the foam it also makes for a  nice air gap in there the design that i'm using   i'm calling a cellular design here's a mock-up so  you can see each one of these panels is going to   become its own cell that's going to have an air  space inside it'll have the air space behind and   then here's a finish panel you can see with the  tape on there so inside of here is this box design   using this design we're going to turn each one  of these panels into its own cell first we need   to cut the lattice and then we need to break  down the iso let's get that started right now   and since each one of my door panels is the same  dimension we're going to cut two 19 inch strips   and that's going to leave one 10 inch strip and  that's going to fill in the top and the bottom   and the two sides so that we can build each cell  here's where the finish nail comes in i pushed   it into the foam so it will hold my chalk line  we're going to cut our first piece at 19 inches   i have the nail holding my chalk line that way  one person can do it let's chalk the second line and let's get them cut i'm going to take  my t-square this is going to give me that   straight edge i'm going to put it right along my  chalk line so that i can make a nice straight cut   and we'll do the other side and the last line which is our 10  inch strip will cut in the same method i find it's easier just kind of bend it and  then we can cut the back and i want these to   be really straight i'm going to cut our foam  pieces let's start with our 10 inch strip   these are going to be our inch and 3 4 inch strips  for the top and the bottom and the two sides now   we're cutting this off at 46 and a quarter  so i'm going to use my straight edge for this   at 46 and a quarter and  we'll cut this the same way there we go all right let's build a cell  let's start with the bottom first all right we'll put the top in and our two sides all right the piece of foam on  this side i actually need to cut   a half inch more narrow than the others   that way when this foam rests up against it  it'll be flush with the front of the panel like that let's cut our 19 inch  wide pieces for the back panel   allowing for foam on both  sides we're just over 45 inches   and for the front panel we're looking at  44 and a quarter so 45 and 44 and a quarter we'll use our straight edge again and the other one all right to finish  building our cell let's take our wood spacers   and get those put into place and then our longer piece of  foam is going to go in the back now we've got the back end i've  cut some strips from our scrap   these are half inch spacers we're  going to put these all the way around   and that's going to make our air gap to complete  the cell i'll just use some tape to hold them in place that will hold it nice and one for  the bottom now let's put our top on oh yeah that holds everything flush let's get our tape on the outside  i'm going to take the extra step   of some alcohol my door's not the cleanest  that way my tape will stick very nice oh yeah plus the alcohol will dry very fast   all right now we can put our tape on hardest part  about this tape is getting the back peeled off there we go all right i'm just  going to stick it right there and i'm going to peel the back as i go   so i don't get any wrinkles i'm just going  to take my knife and cut around my hinges we'll do the same to the other side   all right let's do another one i'm not going to  show you every single one but we'll do a couple   more just like the first cell we're going to build  this one the same way you put that bottom in first we're going to put the top in then we're going to put in the left side and then this side remember this  side is a little more narrow this   one's only an inch and a quarter so  that the panel will sit right on it   next we're going to put in our spacers  next we're going to put in the back next the half inch spacers that we've  cut i've got one for the bottom there   put one on the side and use  the tape to hold it in place   this is what's going to give it  that cellular cavity in the middle one for the top for that guy got one over here on the side that's gonna make that dead  space in there and then we'll put the top on now we'll clean it up with  alcohol and we'll put on the tape   we'll put this tape on make  sure we don't get any wrinkles let's do one more all right just like the other two we're  going to build this one the same exact   way start with that bottom piece we're going to put in the top we'll put on this side and then we've got that skinnier  side that goes over here and then we've got our wooden  spacers get those into place we're using the tape this is our back and then we have our scrap shims one  for the bottom two one for each side   won't put the one across the top like so and again this will give it  that cellular construction and then we'll put on the top nice and flush i'll tape this off   i'm going to go ahead and finish the  door and i'll see you when i'm done all right i've got the entire door done so  remember each one of these panels is its own   cell with a back and a front and an air gap in  between let's talk a little bit about why i made   the choice that i made with the insulation  my insulation choice was polyisocyanurate   i chose poly iso because it's rigid it's foil  backed on both sides and with just a half inch   piece making my cell design makes my panels  super efficient this is so much more efficient   than styrofoam those door kits are nice maybe  in cooler climates but here in las vegas   it's just way too hot it does come in two  inch but that would have been heavy and   that would have been expensive so that's  why i chose this design for my project   that wraps up today's video on insulating a  garage door i hope you give this method a try   poly iso in my opinion is the way to go i'm  glad you watched and i hope you watch again
