Installing Proxmox VE on Beelink SER5 MiniPC and Virtualize Windows 11

in this video I'd be sharing my experience in installing proxmox and B link SE 5 Mini PC or walk is through the process and navigating in proxmox dashboard and creating first Windows 11 VM so let's get [Music] started this SE Mini PC comes with ryzen 7 5800 H processor 32 gig ddr4 1 terabyte SSD and also has Wi-Fi 6 I bought this Mini PC for the purpose of practicing learning and studying the technology related to networking and it stuff I've been virtualizing on my laptop using vmw workstation Pro and virtual box but it's kind of slow already you cannot handle the load so I decided to get a mini PC and dedicate this for virtualization with the hypervisor I have considered to go with prox Max as it is an open [Music] source at the back we can see it has 1 GB land port two USB ports display port an HDMI port and a DC power in and at the front we can see two USB ports type c connector a power button and audio jack continuing what's inside the box we have a mounting bracket here a 19v output power adapter we have also two HDMI cables a shorter cable which is 25 cm and 100 cm HDMI cable and we can also see see some mounting screws here I'm powering this up for the first time to know if it's really booting properly with the pre-installed OS that came with it and have no issue with the hardware this buing comes with Windows 11 and we'll go quickly through the setup [Music] process [Music] I'm just going through the installation quickly here I don't want to show the whole installation process I just want to show the Wi-Fi is enabled by default it will detect the Wi-Fi connection and uh we just need to select the correct Wi-Fi to go through the setup after completing the setup I pulled up DX diag enabl to confirm that it came with the correct hardware specs that advertise in the box now that I know Hardware is fine we can go ahead and install proxmox V I'm following a guide here in installing proxmox V and B link and I'll add a link in the description what we need first is a USB flash drive at least 8 gig capacity second we need to download the proximos suve 8.1 ISO file and third is we need balena etcher to create the bable inst I have already done this to save time it's basically an easy steps to [Music] follow after creating the bootable disc we need to insert this into the Mini PC when booting up we'll have to press F7 to get to the boot menu and select the USB disc I plug the USB flash drive with the front USB port in here I got confused since I did not find any USB from the choices my mind was kind of focusing toward USB itself so I ended up selecting inter setup to get to bias so I went to the boot Tab and selected boot option number one change it to USB [Music] device after saving the bias changes we got this proxmox welcome page I selected the first option for graphical installation the next steps would be an easy one [Music] then the Target desk to select here is the local [Music] storage [Music] in this network configuration page I just put in an IP address of 1921 1688 250 which is in the same range on my network 192168 180/24 we'll be accessing this proximus box later via this assigned IP address [Music] [Music] all right installation is successful after the pro MOX box restarted it goes back again to this same welcome page I realized the buy setting is still set up for the USBs first Boot and I did not remove the USB bootable drive though so went back to and change the boot option one from USB device to hard disk [Music] proxmox this time proxmox is properly loading [Music] now I'm just reviewing the steps here if I miss [Music] something we made it on this part where it shows the IP address with the login prompt the default port to access proxmox UI is 8006 I'm typing here the signed IP address 192.168 18250 column 8006 this is the login window to proxmox the username here will be root this popup is just saying we don't have a valid subscription we just click okay now this is the proxx V dashboard looks [Music] like in the summary section we can view our CPU usage Which is less than 1% of 16 CPUs RAM usage about 5% of 28 gig for disk space usage I notice the dis space is only 93 gigabyt but then I realized this is the root partition only I jump ahead and preparing an external USB flash drive to store a couple of ISO files I have a 32 gig flash drive inserted to the box and it detected it but it's not formated yet so to prepare this USB drive for storage first we need to select wipe dis are you sure you want to wipe the desk we'll just click yes [Music] [Music] here second we need to select initialized disc with [Music] GPT the last step here is to create a directory so that it will Mount to proxa box just create directory selected the disk file system will be xt4 and name this one as ioso files this USB disc is now mounted into proxmox as we can see it here we then click in the um ISO files the left corner so that we can start uploading some ISO files to upload the file we'll just need to go to ISO images we'll click upload button here and select the file which is my windows 11 and then we'll just click upload so we're just waiting this to complete after 100% % I thought it's done already uploading the file but looks like this is a window to check the status or the progress of the file upload and I just waited here and then suddenly there's a entry above showing the ISO file so that means it completed the upload then I closed the window and then I uploaded a second file which is a Windows 22 2022 server and then we'll go to the same process again [Music] here now we have the same window I shown earlier this is what they call task viewer go to status we see the durate here it's progressing we don't see an entry or file yet above so we just have to wait after 2 minutes 9.2 seconds it stopped we can see in the output that the Finish importing the file successfully and we can see now an entry for this Windows 22 ISO file at the bottom section under task we can view the log entries for the chain es we've done so far into proxmox we are in the last part of this video that is creating a first guest Windows 11 OS in proxmox I pulled up this guide titled installing Windows 11 or prox MOX by just searching through Google and I'll share the link in the [Music] description [Music] basically what we need here is the vert IO drivers so this guide has already a link will just click on it it will go to proxa site where we can download the ver iio ISO file I selected the most recent one as suggested I will need to mount this to a virtual SE D in the [Music] VM I made a shortcut here and as you can see the vert iio ISO file just like what we did with those St ISO files earlier now let's create our ver first guest OS by clicking create VM at the top right corner I'm naming this for obvious reason as Windows 11 11 cuz we'll be virtualizing Windows 11 OS of course in the VM ID leave it 100 node section nothing to select here and resource pool none to select so we'll go ahead next in the OS section we'll select the windows 11 ioso files so the storage is already in ISO files directory where we store the windows 11 file so we just need to find it and select in the guest OS section here we'll select Microsoft Windows version is 11222 which is at the top now in here we'll need to add the vert iio drivers let's check the box ad storage is ISO files where we store the ver is so drivers and then we'll just click next then in system section we'll select graphic card as default machine is Q35 bias as ufi and the EFI storage will be a local lbm where this is the local storage for Sky controller we'll leave it as ver iio Sky single we'll check this qm agent box for the TPM we'll select the local VM lvm version leave it to 2.0 and then next in this section we'll select the local lbm the storage local storage and set the size to 64 gig now cache I'll be selecting right back here check this card I've read some guys that right back in this card will provide a good performance so I'm selecting these options in bandwidth section there's none to select here so we'll just click next in CPU section we'll set the course to four type leave it as it is and we'll just go next for memory we'll leave it as 4 gig 496 next in network section B mb0 is the only option here in model we'll select the vert IO which is the default and leave our will'll check we'll go next so we reach the confirmation stage here it's just a summary of what we have configured with this VM all looks good we just click on finish if we look at the bottom section here there's an entry that we created this VM in the top left we also have this Windows 11 entry here we can see the CPU and memory usage in the summary page we can also go to hardware and check the individual Parts we've configured for this VM now let's say um we need to change the memory we'll just have to select memory and then click the edit button here so in here we can adjust the size of the memory same is with the processor there an option here to change now for CD DVD so we just click one of these and then select the the storage and the iso image now for the hard disk um when I click edit here there's no option to to resize the disk space and then notice that there's an next option to edit which is dis action and the resize so colelection and this is where we can resize the desk I started this V by the start button when I go to the console I was already already late pressing any key to boot from the CD where we have the ISO file now it's starting to boot over the network pexi Boot and I don't really know what to do here so I try to shut down this VM after that there's an entry in the tasks that is shutting down but it's not doing it's thing it's still booting over the network after it failed the pixie boot we got a shell prompt here and if you look at the bottom section there's a an error here that it got timed out when we shut it down since I don't know what I'm doing here I tried again to shut down this VM I tried stopping it selecting stop here but it's not really going nowhere it's just won't shut down so I type exit in the Shell prompt and this goes to the bias screen will just select continue here so we'll boot again and this time I have to press a key and then it should go to the installation process all right reach the Windows installation screen now so in here we'll select Windows 11 [Music] Pro accept the [Music] terms we'll have to select custom install here and uh we can see there's no drive it detected no drives at all so we need to load that vert iio drivers here just click load drivers we'll browse that vert iio CD we have in the CD ROM drive go on under amd64 folder and select w11 for Windows 11 and you will just click okay here after that we have the driver available and just load it yeah hey we have the drive now available the 64 gig we allocated for this VM we just click next we can now relax get a drink or coffee while waiting for this to [Music] complete [Music] he okay this screen looks familiar so we should be able to set up this Windows [Music] 11 in this part of the installation setup it did not find the land connection Wi-Fi is not available as expected since we're booting the VM I have a WI easer from a switch going to the gigabit Port of this be Link at the back I tried to secure the cabling but still not detected in the setup screen so I went to the hardware section selected the network device and click edit disable firewall thinking that this could be a firewall issue but then I went back to the console and then still the land is not detected go back again to the network device edit it and uh in the model section I selected Intel E1000 and click okay and when I go to the console again this time it will detect the land connection as we can see here so the next process will be an easy install then [Music] after completing the setup this VM has booted for the first time I went to device manager to see if there are issues with the drivers and notice this too I went to the vert iio drivers and go to the guest agent folder and click on this qmu x86 64 file hoping it will install the drivers I tried to scan for Hardware changes and device manager but then has no effect I went ahead and update the driver manually browse the location of the driver which is the CD drive which is the D drive here and then we can see that it successfully updated the drivers for the second device it's basically the same [Music] process now both of the proper drivers now I'm trying to check other devices here there's still some issues with the driver but it looks all good uh went ahead and open Task Manager here to see CPU and memory usage to see what's uh going on I just want to show you the location of the VM desk this is under local lvm we can see the usage here in VM disk we can see dis zero this is for the ufi this one is for the 64 gig we sign this two is for the TPM back to Windows 11 here we can take a snapshot here's here is the section we can get a snapshot of this VM I removed the mounted ISO files into the two CD DVD rebooted the VM and started this again to know if it's really working now this should be all [Music] good in the next video we'll continue to add more VMS including Windows Server 2022 Cali Linux and some virtual firewalls if you find this
