foreign [Music] what's up everybody welcome back to the channel So today we're going to be doing a new project in my garage and what we're going to be doing is replacing my current overhead garage door opener with a higher quality wall mounted garage door opener from Genie the model we're going to be installing today is the genie 6172h wall mounted garage door opener so without further Ado let's jump in and let's get this started okay first things first why would you want a wall-mounted garage door opener well there's pros and cons to either one but I'm just going to go over the reasons of why I'm switching over to a wall mount now this particular garage door opener is the genie relia G650 this garage door opener was installed when I built this house about nine years ago it's been working fine I just think it's starting to slowly show its age so that's probably my number one reason is because I wanted to get a more newer updated modernized garage door opener to replace this order one here number two is anytime I have my trucks in here my wife's truck or my lifted truck over here if I ever pull them into the garage and I'm just doing maintenance changing the oil whatever the case may be if I open the hood a lot of times my hood will lift up and hit that garage door opener so I have to always be careful of that my third reason is because I'm currently moving my golf simulator setup from my basement to my garage I'm actually in the middle of finishing my basement right now so I had to disconnect everything down there anyways and my wife and I decided we were going to change things up down there with our theater room so in order to do what we wanted to do we wanted to move the golf simulator up here so that we have more room and more height when swinging golf clubs when I'm standing right here and I swing my driver I'm coming extremely close to smacking that garage door opener with my driver so that's probably the third reason so your reasons might be different maybe you're looking to try to get more overhead storage hanging from the ceiling and you need that space for storage racks that's perfectly fine too either way an overhead garage door opener like this takes up a lot of space and prohibits you from using that area so to get rid of that we have to disconnect all of that and then we have to upgrade to a wall mounted garage door opener the wall mount has a motor that's attached right to your coil right here that actually rotates that coil and lifts your garage door right from that spot there so again the model that I went here is the genie 6172h wall mounted garage door opener so without further Ado and let's get this started okay so the first thing I want to do is with the old garage door opener on here I want to shut the garage door and open it I want you to pay attention to the speed and I want you to pay attention to the sound so I'm going to go ahead and hit the button now okay now let's try to count and see how long it takes to raise one two three four five six seven eight nine ten eleven twelve so I'd say roughly 12 seconds to open the garage door okay so we got everything out of the box I have it all sitting out so we have our actual garage door opener unit here we have the bottom bracket here I believe it's more like a battery backup that will attach to the bottom we have our lock mechanism here that we'll have to get installed we have our wireless light then we have all of our wiring and brackets and remotes here's our wall remote and here's our lower door sensors here so it does come with everything you need it does come with a full instruction guide on how to put it together okay so after going through a couple things the first thing you're going to do there is this little bolt right here that's actually mounted to the back of the opener now depending on which side you're mounting this opener okay so if we're looking at it from the front like this I'm putting my opener on the right side of my garage door so I need to be putting my brackets on the left side of this if you happen to be putting your opener on the left side of the garage door then you're going to be working on the right side of this opener so I just wanted to clarify that as we move forward here so the first thing you want to do is take the back bolt out and there is a lock washer on it now I went ahead and added an additional flat washer here so that my bolt would not slip through the bracket so you're going to take your bracket here set it up just like this with the short side against the opener and the longer side towards the back and just lightly put the bolt in so that you can still move your bracket around then you're going to take your coupler here and the small diameter hole is going to attach to your Rod up top the other side has a wider opening so the wider opening is going to go on to the actual opener and then you're going to tighten down the three back bolts here that attaches it to your opener the three front bolts here on this side are going to tighten down once we get it mounted up there onto that shaft later so we'll do that here in a minute so again just Mount this on here nice and tight get that tightened down put put your bracket on there is a little spacer here that goes on the outside here at this little cutout the next thing we got to do is manually lift your garage door and then at the very bottom bracket now again I'm on the right side if you're putting your opener on the left side of the door you're going to be working over there you're going to go down to the very bottom bracket here and they're recommending putting a sleeve right here that little plastic sleeve let's just slide in there it's just a little sleeve you see like that it just pops right on there because they want you to maintain a half inch of space between the door and your side rail right here then the next thing you're going to do is install your cable Keepers now they are color coded you see right here there's a little black marking right on that Rod right there it tells you in the directions that the black is for the right side and then the red that little red marker is going to be for the left side then you want to make sure that the actual bracket extends past the edge see right there about an eighth of an inch and then the bottom of that bracket can't be any higher than four and a half inches from the bottom of the door up so I just took mine down as low as I probably could about a quarter of an inch off the bottom of the door here so that fits there you want to make sure it's nice and level and extends past your door by the eighth of an inch then I just use the black marker and marked my three holes now if you have a wood door they're recommending three bolts if you have a door like this with the metal bracket you only need the two self-tapping bolts but I went ahead and marked all three just in case so I drilled my pilot holes on the bottom and that top one right there then I line my bracket up and then put my two big bolts at the bottom there have it nice and mounted because you want this under spring tension right then you're going to take this little plastic clip here you're going to take this Rod that should be hanging down you're going to flip it up creating some tension and just Loop it on there like that and I would maybe even say take a pair of pliers and pinch that a little bit more further shut that's your cable keeper right there so we'll go ahead and do that on the opposite side as well once you get that done we'll move on to the next step so I'll be right back then I went ahead and I got my motor mounted up here again mounting it up top up here is simple it just slides on then you're going to use your bolts to tighten it down this was probably the hardest part just because you need to adjust it to get it level and based on how my door was built I needed a larger spacer here so I just took an old piece of strut Channel and I pretty much bolted it to the wall and then I used one of those bolts that can go in the strut to bolt that down so now that's nice and good so if you look up here I'm pretty level okay that's what you want you want your motor here to be level as much as you possibly can so now I have it level we are good to go we're all lined up so now that we have everything mounted I got to tighten a few things down and we're going to move on to the next step so I'll be back in just a second okay so the next thing you want to do after you get your motor mounted up there you're going to lift your door up and then you're going to find a place on your track here to put your electronic lock now you could try to line it up with any holes that are already there for some reason mine we're not lining up so I just use the template which comes on the back of the instruction guide It's a peel and sticks you peel it off the back of the instruction guide and line it up wherever you want they typically recommend it on the second or third panel and they want the center hole to be about no more than three inches above a roller so I measured mine out and I put my sticker right here I drilled my hole so now my electronic lock will Mount right there so let me go ahead and get this all mounted up and we'll be right back for the next step okay so the next thing you're going to do after you get your electric lock hooked up to your side rail is get the cable cord that comes with the kit and you're going to plug it into the bottom right here where it says lock you're going to run it down using the supplied Staples okay I still have to make a couple Minor Adjustments still but you're going to run it down with the supplied Staples then you're going to get to your lock and then you're going to cut the excess wire off now I zip tied about three to four inches of excess wire behind the box I'm just going to cut that off right there so you don't see it just in case these tips ever frail out or break off I have a little bit of extra material to rewire them again if I need to going to run them into here now there's a white wire with black stripe that's going to go there can't quite see but it says b w for black with white this one here is just a straight white wire so you're going to screw them in after you get that done close the lid and that's done so now that we have the lock all hooked up we're going to move on to the next step which is probably wiring in our new sensors so let me start looking into that and we'll be right back okay so On To The Next Step so the next thing I did was I mounted my sensors at the bottom and they want the sensors to be five to six inches off the ground so I would recommend starting with one sensor it doesn't matter which side started at five to six inches off the ground you're just going to line your sensor up and bolt it to the wall then once you do that on both sides you're going to get your excess spool of wire and you're going to run it and use little Staples and run it all the way up to the top and I came up over top down ran it all the way over here to your motor same thing over here got that hooked up got my wire ran up the side and everything's just sitting right here so these two empty wires right here okay are go into my sensors then you're going to take the two white wires tie them together the two stripe wires time together and you're gonna go right here into the orange the stb right here if I can get you to see that these two little openings right there you're going to slide them in there so again so far everything has been fairly easy to do again the hardest thing that took me a little extra time to figure out was just how to adjust my bracket here to get my motor level everything else was pretty easy it's just a little time consuming but again take your time and you'll figure it out so let me go ahead tie my wires in and we'll be right back okay we are finally done so I did go ahead and remove my old garage door opener from the ceiling so that opens up that whole area a lot better now so I'm really happy about that so again just to recap you're going to start off with the instruction guide here on how to put everything together and mount all of the hardware and wiring so again you're going to want to start off putting together that bracket on the side like I showed you in the beginning and you're going to want to put your sleeve bracket on the top and then at that point you can go ahead and mount this up here and then you're going to have to figure out a special bracket however you need to to get your unit nice and level so that's really the first thing once you do that you're going to come down here and you're going to put a sleeve right here on the bottom track door whether it's left or right whichever side you're putting your opener on then you're going to want to mount these cable brackets here that are going to mount on here and they fold up they just hold on to your cable with a little clip like that and again if you just follow the instructions it walks you through everything you have to do so once you get that mounted on then the next thing you're going to want to do is come over here and mount your power lock and again you can try to use pre-existing holes that might be in your track if that lines up for you fantastic if not they do give you a template to put where you need to put it and then drill new holes to hook it up that way which again is very simple it just has two bolts that mounts on with two nuts on the back and then you're going to take your harness tap it into the back here and then run it up and plug it into the bottom of your unit once you do that then you're going to want to start hooking up your bottom sensors so again you're going to want to put the sensors about five to six inches off the floor then once you do that on both sides they do give you a ton of wire I mean this is how much wire I still have left over I mean they give you a ton of wire so you're going to run the wire so you're going to strip off the ends tie it into your sensor run it up and Tack it along the wall with the enclosed bag attacks over to there you're going to run another wire from this sensor up to there as well there's no polarity to really worry about so you're going to take the two white wires twist them together take the other white wires with the black stripe twist them together plug it into the bottom of the unit with the two orange openings they're just like a push pin connector push them in lock them in once you do that you're going to want to make sure that you hook up your backup battery pack you could go ahead and mount it but just don't plug it in yet because you have to do some settings to your garage door opener first before actually plugging in your battery pack so once you get all of that mounted like we just talked about then you're going to put your instruction guide aside and then you're going to go at the very end into your operating manual and this guide here is going to show you how to adjust and program everything so you have to program the opener first before actually using it or you can damage it and it does tell you in the instruction guide don't use the opener until you do the settings adjustments first then you're just going to go ahead and follow the instructions step by step in a specific order you're going to start off with adjusting your drum setting up here you're gonna have to just hit a couple buttons to get your opener to know what drum size you're using that's step one then the next step is to adjust the settings to learn how low you want your garage door to go and then the next step after that is to adjust the settings to get your garage door opener to learn how high you want your garage door opener to go once you do that the next step is to adjust your garage door safety feature so you're going to put a 2x4 down on the bottom you're going to let it close on top of the 2x4 it'll register that and then it'll open back up on its own and then that setting will be saved so you're going to have to go through a few settings first before actually operating it but once you go through those settings it works great and then it does come with a single remote you can buy additional ones if you want and then it does come with your wall mount opener here which I got mounted there again this is all Bluetooth you don't have to run wires for it and then it does come with a bluetooth light you could put in your ceiling you just plug it in and then the Bluetooth picks that signal up so as you can see here it's not on so you're going to come over here hit your like button light turns on come over here hit your light button light turns off so that's a nice feature there so then you're just going to hit your big button here that's going to raise it up and then you hit the button again to drop it back down one thing that I did notice is that this is pretty Zippy but it's very quiet so I'm gonna go ahead first and open and shut the door so you can hear what it sounds like and then we're gonna open it up again and count how long it takes to open it up to compare it to the other one that we just counted earlier in this video so let's start hitting the button here listen how quiet that is okay hit it again now it does start off a little slow it tells you in the manual that the first second or two is a little slower and then it speeds up okay so now we're going to use the remote and then we're going to count how long it takes to open up remember the old garage door opener took roughly 12 seconds to open so let's go ahead and hit the button and let's start counting one two three four five six seven eight nine ten eleven we'll say 12. so I'd say it's very close to the same speed as my old garage door opener as far as going up and down but I will say it's a lot smoother I don't hear as much banging around it's very smooth and it's very quiet so that's a really nice feature and I'm really happy about that but again the remotes work fantastic I do have another one of these remotes that I did purchase separately from my old garage door opener that I have in my truck I already went ahead and programmed that and it tells you in the book how to program all of that as well so again overall I'm really happy with this garage door opener it was fairly easy to install it was just a little tedious it took me a couple hours to get it all done but again it's not really hard it's just very tedious work you have to make sure you're following your instruction manuals very closely but overall it's not that hard but let's go ahead and shut the door and I'll show you how the electric Lock Works on its own so as you can see here the pin is in its shut position let's go ahead we're gonna wait for the garage door to come down and then we're gonna see if we can watch it if we can so for that middle pin ready and there you go it does it automatically on its own so that is a really great feature that my old opener did not have so again now I don't have that big lunky ugly looking bracket here in my ceiling I have plenty of room here now when I'm over here and I get my golf simulator all set up I can be swinging right here and I don't have to worry about my club hitting the garage door opener anymore so that's awesome so I'm really really happy with this new Genie wall mount garage door opener another thing I want to show you real quick too I haven't done it quite yet but there's this Aladdin connect you can actually download an app on your phone connect it to your garage door that way if you're home or not you can use your phone to actually open and shut your garage door which I thought was a pretty cool feature as well so again really nice garage door opener installation was really not that hard I did it by myself I actually did call a local installer that installs garage doors and openers and so forth and I got a bit from them and they said it would probably cost me close to eight hundred dollars to have somebody professionally come in and install it I bought this unit off Amazon for a lot less and I installed it by myself and I saved myself a ton of money and at the end of the day I'm really happy with this new setup again it's very smooth it's more high-tech it's very quiet I like the X extra Safety Lock feature I like that I don't have that big ugly bracket hanging from the ceiling anymore and overall I just think it's a much better garage door opener okay everybody so there you go we went ahead and we got the new Genie 6172h wall mount garage door opener installed in my garage we got the old overhead garage door opener ripped out of here we got everything hooked up we got it all wired up we got all the remotes programmed and working perfectly and we got the new bluetooth light ceiling hooked up as well so everything works great it's really really quiet it's really smooth I really like the electric door lock system that automatically locks your garage door every time you shut the garage door I really like that feature again it's really quiet going up it's really quiet going down as far as the time it takes to open and shut I'd say it's probably very similar to my old one if anything it's maybe one second faster but it's about the sand but overall my initial impressions of the genie 6172h wall mount garage door opener I'm going to go ahead and give it a thumbs up and give it a go I really really like this garage door opener I'm really happy I purchased it and I think it makes a great addition to the garage so that's it for today's video yo I hope this video helped some of you out do me a favor hit that thumbs up button and
