this is a chronicle of my personal experience exploring the underground car scenes of Japan follow my journey and discover the rich culture and history of street racing drifting and everything in between here in the Land of the Rising Sun this is since I moved to Tokyo I've been exploring the underground car scene here more and more while the good people racing of 90 sports cars and mountain roads in Tokyo the lack of toga and the high cost of living gave rise to a different type of street racing subculture racing on the wangan 10-inch toko interstate highways of tokyo here it's all about exotics big power and pure speed in this in future episodes we'll dive into the history of the various street racing teams that inspired pop culture and meet the Loretto so cool street racing tribes who gamble their lives on the highway leader in this episode I went with my good friend storm and Andy to go visit decadal a parking area off the coast of the Ohama which happens to be the mecca of Japanese car culture so it's really really busy because it's summer so hopefully there's gonna be a nice range of different cars [Music] the whole aesthetic of that cookie photo is just what you imagined when watch Tokyo Drift and you mess with our cultures like me in Japan develop people going in circles it is just it just loses the cool here most people are just enthusiasts who come to show off the car in the world's greatest weekly car show however some would read this open still use it as a starting point for their nightly battles for the loo on this night a deco flow I was surprised to see a car with delivery of no good racing one of the most notorious teams that comprised the infamous con Jose oku tribes of street outlaws from western Japan that only drive Honda's and once fight for dominance on the highways of Osaka maybe a member spot not sure if it's just a replica if it's somebody who really really likes to design as well and once I make it as similar to the style of like the actual team it's very authentic now and how put together so it's very cool hopefully the order comes back moments later the owner walked by and they realized that he was a member of no good Racing's Kanto or Eastern Division I took this opportunity to briefly interview my new friend about the culture and history handles are gonna America pose both of the good I'll take the hustle there caboose caboose my buddy Sammy Hagar handle happens to me that my tattoo done Joshua percocet tips in Menominee aha [Music] yeah [Music] [Music] Yokohama can do - first time today Minato Mirai no boys Josephina skittle catcher McCann todo de precios de haciendo ah yonder motto psychology Medicaid or hawk-i pasadena become autonomous udaya children so editing Doyle testicle posse they recovered joking Hoppus ownership we cannot endure a 1/4 of the door Oh I plan to create a full documentary about the history and culture of the and would like to see more oh man that was believed now as that was that bad kind of interaction see what I really live for age it's now about so much more than the cars it's about the people and the culture and like this amazing facet of Japanese society that is it's kind of hidden from normal life and to be able to experience its be able to see what it's like in real life it's just it's it's so exciting it's so so so cool very very cool after the break Andy and I will discuss peculiar findings around then try to catch the street drifters burning rubber outside of painters then later we'll go for a drive around eluc Huntford over Vettes okay [Music] so this is my first time anywhere like this that alone in Japan sort of in this spiral of roads surrounding us to people just gather here like I know that congregate but what do they do they just hang out shadows like their cars or what's the deal yeah this place be sure it's the place to really let the world know how much ever you've been putting into making most if not all because you seem to have this this large collection of stickers attach them speechless we just had a brief interruption there with that beautiful train line beginning I wanted to bring it back to pushing ahead these stickers over here the sort of an abundance of the none of these brands I have ever heard of is this a sort of normal thing yeah it's a good question so stickers are almost an integral part of our culture essentially a lot of these stickers are from local garages local teams and people will swap them kind of like trading car it's kind of like to represent where they're from it's like having a flag you know it's like it shows team that you support it shows places that you like it shows it shows lineage of the culture or a lot of the team's become famous over time those stickers aren't available anymore so it's kind of a badge bar to have to have like green stickers one thing I find very peculiar and I've seen this a few times is if you have a look here you'll see an abundance of those old Christmas tree smell ammeter thing I'm gonna find from the funny about that they all seem to have 1 & 2 but at least a dozen and when I talk to the owner of this car earlier tonight and asked him as to why this was he said that uh it's so like this badge of honor thing the more you have prestige your warrant in other words if you have one you sort of as amateur and in you to the game you have a florist or a jungle of these trees you're sort of like the top dog so I got a stuck a link [Music] it stinks but like it is it stinks in an amazing having a spell in Tokyo Drifters conjugate in parking areas near factories and other places which are relatively deserted aside from the occasional truck and I cook dough used to be a hot spot for street drifting even ten years ago it was really wild the true spectacle in every weekend for people watching from the gallery however in recent years the police have been cracking down hard to drifting nowadays is just one or two cars who are brave enough to put on a show for the gallery they do a few runs before the police show up to put a stop to the fun well tonight we were lucky enough to catch a glimpse of these two Street outlaws burning rubber and filling the summer air over the set of tires own for true car fans it's an intoxicating a roll testament effected these drifters are using their machines the way that are meant to ripping up and down a stretch growth throwing caution to the wind and living life on the edge it's a true juxtapositions in many spotless 4-wheel Show Queens right on the other side of the we're gonna have to touch the MEP a spatula words Tokyo let's see let's see was it Tatsumi there's two sides right I always forget which I'm sure coming together next we head back to words Tokyo metropolis where a snack grows long the highway clearest and Tatsumi PA fills up with the road episode blank who run the c1 loop the rule episode could come from many walks of life some are rich businessmen who gamble with their exotics and some like no good racing of our street outlaws who drive old 90s air sports cars yet are often much faster the c1 highway loop is the great equalizer money and status doesn't buy respect it must be earned with skill luck and courage blue death the Zoku are incredibly fast and highly skilled most street racers follow caught a panic this has to keep a punch-up for normal drivers uninvolved so as soon as they come up on traffic up ahead the race or time peril ends weaving around traffic does happen but is relatively greater this concern for other motorists reduces the incidence of newsworthy accidents and is arguably what keeps the police from completely cracking down on these clandestine runs thus the truth azúcar are tacitly allowed to continue their activities under the watchful eye of the police just as they've done for decades is the scene yang balance of power that's the most fascinating aspect of Japanese to increasing culture right take a slight left turn husband yeah this is definitely a place all right so we are here now and how gazecki and akazake is there's a bunch of different rest stops rapidly Kentucky is the place where the whole things we hang it basically means like the people who are most hardcore into this scene into the extreme racing it's basically their life they take it very very seriously but it's kind of you know it's it's it's strange because it's not for anything per se its you they just want the bragging rights of being the fastest on food unlike the type of the photo which is all about showing off your car and like letting it sit in the pool this is where amazing feats happen it's where people hang out like every car that's passing by right it's like this high-powered sports car this is sort of like this is a weird stuff or something said for us to sort of congregate and prior to racing what what do you think is it I miss it so much I miss the days of just having a car and being able to come out to these places on my own meeting up with the crew just going out hitting the circuits in the mountains and everything is just brought back so many memories and then some thanks for bringing me up man love this love it really do through adventures like tonight I've started to understand what they do read the zogu literally the roulette tribe choose to gamble with their livelihoods on the loop for many it's simply to thrill for others it's to keep a tradition alive and for us elect for you it's a personal quest to become a legend while I don't condone racing on public roads and glad we had a chance at glimpse it is fascinating [Music] let's 3:15 in the morning he's hit yeah man so make sure to check out my version of this video is probably gonna be better than he makes better trip into videos behind it make sure that you know Andy's music you know links in the description box support it now let's end with a Japanese word for school it's kind of tough
