Inside Shelley Johnstone's Lake Forest Garden

when i'm putting together the table i think you'll be really disappointed i want to say i'm really together i'm very organized i have it all planned out i don't [Music] i'm shelley johnstone paske i'm an interior designer and i'm so excited to show you my yard and garden here in lake forest illinois well i grew up my father's a landscape architect so i had kind of creative parents who had beautiful gardens and just kind of always i think i was always around it so i always knew what i kind of liked the outside of the house is really an extension to the inside we come the summer months we open all the windows and doors up and every room on the back of the house opens up to the outside so there's all these kind of other rooms outdoors which we've created with the space under the awning the pool has structure the patio spaces and really like from this room the slurry room going outside you just feel like it's an extension of the inside we really did the house in the backyard as a family collectively and we wanted to be a place that we all were happy and enjoyed and i want the kids and their friends here and them all to be comfortable and welcome so we knew we needed some shade from all the sun so we did the alley of trees to put the table underneath so we could have big fun family meals under the alley of trees and then we have other spaces that get sunshine and we can be there so they just kind of kind of evolved so i you know i always want to feel like we're somewhat on vacation that was the whole point of the backyard we wanted to feel like instead of leaving this beautiful area where we live in the summers which a lot of people do um you know it's gorgeous here so we want to be home we love the garden planting it together then harvesting it and enjoying the food and it'd just be a fun family activity we get excited for our tomatoes and our cucumbers and our hair cold bear and what's fun about the garden is it makes you want to cook if the tomatoes are sitting there you're like i have to do something fabulous with them or at least have fun with them with a salad or it's so much fun and i keep it very simple if you look there's just hydrangeas and boxwood and i wanted things that were just very easy my mom had these beautiful gardens growing up but she was always working in them and my both my sister and i have these very simple um kind of more formal gardens and i think it was because we didn't want to spend the entire day weeding and so we kind of laugh about it now they're very simple but there's a lot of color and um they're very happy [Music] i like to have the juxtaposition of formal and informal mix together so usually there's like the little bit the high-low feeling in there this is our happy place this is our sanctuary i feel really blessed to be able to come home and enjoy it and i'd rather be here than anyplace else [Music] you
