Inside Cathy Kincaid's Dallas Home

i'm like the woman in that movie 27 dresses i have like 27 000 tablecloths and they're all stuffed into closets all over the house [Music] i'm kathy kincaid and i'm an interior decorator in dallas texas i moved in this house about eight years ago it took me two years to renovate it my house my previous house burned down 12 years ago i was kind of paralyzed i didn't know what to do and so finally after about a year i thought i'm going to just find another house it's the first one i looked at and the last one i looked at [Music] i just loved it because it felt like it was in connecticut or something it didn't feel like it was in the middle of dallas and it was just the size i wanted and it was kind of tucked back in this little spot that people don't even know it exists i have people tell me all the time i didn't even know that house was there [Music] okay so this room was the front porch and i enclosed it because i have orange trees that you probably saw on the front porch and in the winter time they can a lot of them come in here and i just needed a place for them to be but i love blue and white and so this is you know just kind of a collection of blue and white porcelain all different some italians some french some chinese [Music] and so then we just walk right into the living room so this is where everybody lands they love to sit by the fireplace and so i put my most comfortable chairs there the decorating rule that i like to break the very most is what most people think that a large room requires large furniture you think that that's the way to do it but when you walk into a room like that you're just not comfortable and for some reason along the way someone has has convinced people that that's a decorating rule a large room you need to use smaller furniture and have more seating areas so my aesthetic i would describe as pretty traditional but i like to throw in something contemporary or something that's different anything indian and it's pretty layered [Music] my most sentimental object the one that i could never part with is my watermelon painting i bought it when i had been married about a year and i had to talk my husband into it i had to get a loan to get it it has been under plexiglas at one point because i had the children eating in front of it no telling what was going to get thrown on it but i'm about to put it back on with the grandchildren are you grandma's pretty girl are you those are all my orange trees that come live with me inside when it's cold but today they're out here because it's such a perfect day in dallas [Music] in 1997 my second husband and i purchased a house it was owned by a really famous interior designer in dallas and her name was nina claiborne she had painted this mural that's in my dining room right now i just loved that mural when my house burned down i was very thankful that i got out with my pets and i didn't really care about all the material things but i did hope that i had saved that so i called my wallpaper man and he came over and he went in while the house was still smoldering and he took it off the walls and it came right off it was on canvas she painted this little man here and forever in my old house he didn't have a head and the story was it was her husband her ex-husband who had cheated on her and so when he cheated on her she painted his head off and when the panels were restored in this room when i moved in my painter didn't know that and he painted the head back on so he's been redeemed now [Music] my favorite room in the house is the kitchen it's where i spend all my time and i really wish i had made it bigger i wish i had put a little fireplace in there and made it a little spot that i could sit in in a comfy chair but i end up sitting in the bar stills at the island every night i do paperwork there and i can cook at the same time one of my favorite things about this kitchen is this window right now my african violets just bloomed so my bean blot little vase of this lady now her hair has flowers in it [Music] this is my second favorite room in the house because it's my butler's pantry and i have all my collections but the thing i'd really love to do in here is arrange flowers when i'm really serious about flowers i have margaret ryder do my flowers but i do want to talk about the fact that anybody can arrange flowers so i do love canopy beds and you don't want them to be cloying you can do a canopy bed with no canopy you can use these wonderful indian beds that john rosselli makes and he's kind of famous for them and they have the slats on the top and you can just leave the slats open which is the way mine is if you notice and then just do a head cloth in the back and that way you feel really open but there's something about the structure that lifts the ceiling in a room if you have a ceiling a room with low ceilings put a canopy bed in there and it'll make the ceiling seem taller you can do as much or as little in a canopy bed as you want to and it's a really great way to introduce different patterns different types of fabrics i love to do antique textiles [Music] so this is my guest room you know by now that i love canopy beds this one i bought at auction and it was one of albert hadley's he had designed this and i just love it because it's so plain and simple and then the blue color is so much fun most people i think would say oh i have to paint the bed white or gray or whatever color the room is i love the blue in here with all the neutral and then the other thing that's so much fun to do is when you have a fabric with a border to use your border as a trim [Music] come on girls come on i've always worked out of my house but when i bought this house it had this back house on it and this was actually the garage and then i lived above it while my house was worked on about a year ago i took the garage and made it into more office space i was officing upstairs and then we needed more space and so as you can see we're quite busy we had a client in today we're doing a project in aspen and we were trying to get it all pulled together so that she can spend christmas there i would describe my house in three words as cozy casual and kind of crazy i mean it's always just full of chaos i don't think i'm hard on things but i don't mind if people come in and make a mess and i love it you know so i think i'm pretty i'm pretty relaxed [Music]
