Inkscape Tutorial: Create Letter A Graphic Text Effect (Episode #31) @ Ardent Designs

this is Laurie at Arden Design stat CA in today's tutorial we're going to be creating this really simple a text logo using Inkscape let's open up our Inkscape and get started we'll go to file document properties uncheck show page border close out of this menu go to view zoom one to one then we'll open up our align and distribute edit objects colors and gradients and we'll start by grabbing our text let's type in a and I'm gonna scale that up because it's awfully small shifting control to scale it up then we'll go to our text menu and I'm gonna use something called my drop metropolis and then I'm going to make it bold then click apply and then we'll close out of this menu we don't need it right now I shrink that down so with this a selected it's currently it's currently text it's escapes recognizing it as text what we're gonna do is we're going to change it to a path so object to path and then we're gonna ungroup it even though it's only one letter and keep just just watch it it shows differently down here now it's a path we're gonna Union this even though it's only one letter so now we can edit it so we'll go to our busy a and I'm actually going to zoom in using the plus key so what we're gonna do is we're gonna cut out this portion of the a so we'll turn on our snap to paths and our snap to cusp and it should just click on there I'm actually before I do that I'm going to make this text I'm going to change the color to red click on it change it to red and bring the opacity down in half that way we can see a little better what we're doing now we'll go to the bezzie a pen and we'll click click click and click and back to the beginning and there's our piece there select it press shift and select the a and then we will pass difference and there's a nice clean cut there so we'll go back to our busy a pen and we're going to create a triangle shape and we'll start down here we'll click and we'll bring it up close to the top of the the a here so just over a little bit and maybe line it up here something over it like this we can always change it later and then we're gonna come back we're gonna click on this corner and then we'll bring it back to the beginning there and click so there's our shape let's go to let's fill it in which fill it in black and then we'll shift and press the X button to get rid of the stroke when I come to our nodes here let's zoom in here using the zoom tool let's zoom in on the bottom my nodes seem to have come up Hart so let's snap it [Music] zoom in a little more nodes yeah yeah okay so using the minus key and we're gonna duplicate this black shape here so select it press well we're right click on it we'll go to duplicate ctrl D is the shortcut I'm in the habit of using the shortcut duplicate will turn the duplicated copy blue and then we'll go back to the nodes tool and we're gonna make this blue one half the size as the black one but we don't want to touch this side so we'll only touch this side so press ctrl and we'll move that over about in half something like that and that looks pretty good let's zoom out a little bit okay so we'll select what we're gonna do is we're going to select the black piece and we're gonna punch a hole through the da so press shift and select the a and we'll go path difference and you see that we've punched a hole there this one here we're going to press Shift + select the 8 and we're going to pass Union so that's all in one piece but we want to break these apart what about the top have to be a different color so we'll go paths and break apart yeah mine didn't do it but if you have any hopes control dead if you have any debris left over like that looks like little squares you just press shift to deselect one and the other and then that the squares will show up I don't seem to have any extra debris this time but sometimes it happens and you don't want that so okay with this one selected we're going to let's actually let's grab everything we'll bring the opacity all the way up let's select the top we'll color that in this nice shade of blue over here 0 0 CC FF and I'm gonna give that a actually you know what we forgot a little piece here so let's go back here if there's a little piece that I draw it drew in right here so let's put that in first before we go further so with these two on we're only gonna have them on for just a minute that's pre use the plus key will zoom in a little bit basically we're gonna simulate the curve but you'll see with the snap to pass and the snap to cuss it just it won't let you do what you want so after we click on this corner here and it'll turn these things off again now we're gonna simulate basically the court the this line here and I will bring it back here and we'll snap it back to the beginning select it oops select it I'll color it in black for now press shift and X to get rid of the stroke so now it's flush with this blue piece press shift to select the blue piece and go path Union a new mountain alright so with the blue one selected we're gonna give it a linear gradient with this button here and I'll click the Edit gradient button this pencil icon and let's grab this node here we'll put it up here and we'll bring the opacity on that node all the way up to grab this one and put it down here and I'm gonna give it a nice masculine dark blue one of these probably pretty good let's try this one that's nice and okay let's select the red piece let's go back to the beginning here and we'll turn it either eighty or ninety percent gray something like that it's pretty masculine and
