all right well we are kicking off our annual backcountry shed trip and uh we brought some antler packers with us got isaac and colt who are uh their backpacks are lighter than ours right now so they're going to be loaded up coming out but tyler and i are coming in to the spot we came last year we did good we only shed hunted one day last year and i think we brought out we bring out 21 antlers last year so we're gonna stay for uh four days today hike in uh tomorrow and wednesday shed hunt hike out thursday so we've got our good luck charm cameraman john you look at the camera sorry i was busy watching tyler hide his keys on camera it's too late for somebody to take the truck now but we're hiking in uh about nine miles setting up camp and uh gonna find some elk sheds [Music] well we made it down to the creek bottom probably three and a half miles in five five and a half to go it's all pretty good going now though we dropped all of our elevation we dropped about 3 000 feet now we have maybe 500 we gain between here in camp so good going we've passed two camps so far but there's no fresh tracks on the trail at all so i think everybody else is down lower and hasn't made it up into the canyon this far yet so might be a good thing tyler and colt are coming down this big ridge they may be a little behind us so we might we'll radio when we get up here to the confluence where they come together and see how close they are but feeling good should be uh should be a brown antler on the hill somewhere [Applause] isaac asked if he should bring his rifle said nah never see any wolf sign in here we're seeing it this year home sweet home for one night i think it might have been a little more than eight miles [Music] eight point 8.3 8.3 we're here i've not seen a full elk yet i think we'll break refuel isaac says he's gonna fish i'm gonna head up the mountain and do some glass and find some antlers hopefully for tomorrow to go pick up [Applause] [Music] i'm not picking that tick off you yeah you are that's one [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] so [Applause] future weekend [Music] [Applause] oh you did come through here last year yeah i was gonna meant to ask you i was like but i wouldn't have seen that thank you a good color though on the board i just need to find one on a little bit less of a steep hillside right that one is dropped that one's still got an antler at least it's one of those 13 out there's bulls over there yeah those are all balls okay that one's still packing how many yes that's just a big cluster of them oh my gosh they are eating each other oh i got twelve so sure i didn't know i'm out of breath what cory's out of breath what it is morning of day two day one was pretty much the hike in and we gained a little elevation last night spotted some bulls so we're hiking in this morning to get on him and see if we can find an antler we're going to send isaac and colt up the uh most productive looking hillside there are five bowls four of them were dropped so they're gonna go there and john and i are gonna go on farther across the canyon and do some looking and hiking remember that tonight when we come back we might have to climb up there yeah because these bulls have been traveling this in this timber probably bedding on that open ridge right under the open ridge and going out and feeding on that side definitely a needle in a haystack excursion you want to loop this you go that way right there i'll go up and around where does this trail go well this gel just goes straight up the ridge here okay if you just go out here on this bridge and then go up that ridge right there and meet you well yeah we'll be 100 yards apart okay perfect where are the brown ones i don't know hard white i walked the ridge last year so these antlers will on these open hillsides like that bleach out on the side that's exposed to the sun and after one year they're still pretty solid usually no cracks after two years they'll start getting some pretty good cracks in them backsides still got decent color we just need to find the brown one right there i was telling john just with all the bad weather we've had the last two weeks these bulls made just come into the timber and hunkered down it gets sunny like this a lot of times i'll lay out on those open ridges but rain and wind and snow a lot of times will come in the timber and so i came around the open ridge got 40 yards into the timber from the open ridge and glassed and there's a fresh six point set laying 50 yards down the hill there so we're gonna go pick it up that's what we're looking for it's a good ball right here in the bed bed right here dropped his antlers right there so good bull sweet fronts yeah really good thirds too this front's curling crazy there it is first browns of the trip pretty bowl oh man i just got done hiking through that mess that brushy hillside we found a really nice brown set up at the top of that hill and so i came down through all of that got torn up pretty good and was pretty bummed didn't find anything um but just got to this open hillside that i'm on now across from it and just found a looks like a hard white or a last year's so pretty excited about that yeah just basically just stumbled on it just walked up it's right here um i'll just walk up the hill so i kind of a funky shape i think i just found a tiny antler looks pretty pretty old look at that monster wow that is chocked i don't i don't think we're gonna keep that one that is a chalky chalky i've just been side hilling across through this snowing brush and popped out over here on a nice hillside and you can see behind me there is brown antler number three for the day it's like a nice heavy it would have been a five point but it's got a double on the dagger there so nice heavy six good heavy horn i was following corey up here and i was getting ready to sit down and take a break and i was like i think about sitting down take a break and i just had gone into the trees to sit down get out of the wind corey radios me and says hey walk back out on the ridge cory's walking right there and he's like i just he's like look right here and i look i probably walked 50 yards hey is just walking back over to where i stashed our first few antlers to load them up walking through the brush and spotted some tying sticking up here in the brush like a few years old i think we might strap it on though we'll put it on top it'll be the first one we drop when we drop one made it probably halfway up to the top and there's a really fresh rub right there a lot to sign so hopefully we'll find something soon i don't know if i've seen this much elk sign ever in my life it is hammered it reeks like elk dude there's got to be an antler in here somewhere if we don't find it it's going to be a ripple oh how far did you say we've hiked three or four miles are you kidding me but we've gained a ton of vertical feet but that's what we picked up antler all right so brown good job dude there we go well i'm pretty sure i just glassed up my first brown uh cory went back to go grab the antlers and said hey why don't you run a zigzag across this hill big open hillside right here and so started started across and uh i think i just glassed up a brown down here about 100 yards away so we're gonna walk down and see if i just joined the brown team here yeah check this out a little six point i am on the board for brown that's pretty exciting ah finally finally finally finally i have to look around see if we can't find a another side but john's on the board for brown well i was just walking along really hoping i could match that horn up and i don't know if i got a match or not but there is a horn 20 yards up the hill from me so let's go see if we potentially matched up the brown i just found uh oh i think we matched it yeah it's gotta be a match super cool that's my first brown match ever sweet all right we ready yeah yes my dad's probably not cancer well it's the end of day two had a productive day at least john and i did tyler found a chunk of an antler and isaac and colt found a chunk of an antler from last year i think john and i ended up with nine today hoping to double that tomorrow so had a good hike isaac and colt hiked their tails off and john and i had a good hike climbed to the top of the mountain we're i'm not even going to guess we're at on the tick count but it's probably approaching 100. look every time we sit down or turn around we pull four off of us good trip we're going to stay the night here and tomorrow morning we're going to get up we're going to pack everything up so it'll probably all be wet which is always fun and then we're gonna hike about four miles down canyon and hit a couple drainages down there and uh tyler and colts are gonna head out tomorrow afternoon john and isaac and i are gonna stay one more day and most likely just pack out on the last eggs we're gonna have a pretty heavy load of antlers authority if i got 60 pounds or so of antlers good time day two is done you
