In Residence: Pamela Shamshiri

we were looking for a house to preserve and I didn't know much about Schindler at the time but we opened the door and saw the view and I think everyone gasped and knew we wanted to be in a treehouse and I think this is really a very California version of a treehouse so Schindler designed this house right after he visited the Anasazi cave dwellings and he was deeply into space architecture era which was mostly about creating spatial caves to view nature from every room you sort of have this incredible view of trees we've been here close to 10 years now and it took 8 years to restore the house fully when we got it it was all metal windows and five different types of floors and there was a bar in every room but you could tell that it was a special house all the wood paneling was behind drywall and this amazing fireplace was behind marble and granite and so you know someone had taken this house and tried to cover it up with more expensive materials another thing I love about Schindler and it's sort of really high design with low materials he wrote a lot about how nature unfold or reveals itself to a house you're always traveling in a path that's a V in this house and there's always trees and nature on one side of you we borrow from the past and look forward hopefully with fresh eyes and try to make things sentimental it's a romanticized take on life when your house seems and is incredible and it gives back to you it's such a great thing in life and I want that for everyone he hid everything in two coves and would use Plexiglas to defuse the light and it's sort of like a an architectural lampshade I guess it's just such a nice quality of light throughout [Music] my favorite room in the house is now my bathroom which is downstairs and it's not an original room but it's my take on Schindler and it's definitely my sanctuary and recovery room what defines home has changed for me over the years I think right now with where we all are with the chaos of electronics and the amount of information that we have to process and cope with and all the alerts we get on our phones and everything I think a home for me right now is a place of refuge and recovery and I think we just really read a lot and recharge and make fires and eat and gather people here and I think it's important to have a place to do that you
