Architect Barbara Weiss Takes Us On A Tour Of Her Upside-Down House, A Converted Pub In Westminster

[Music] it's quite difficult to define what modern living is about it is really more about the individual whereas previous house building was all to do with social mores today i think people are not prepared to be living in the same way as other people living i am barbara weiss and i'm a practicing architect here in london we are in westminster in a house that i designed and we moved into seven years ago [Music] we took what was built as an old pub in 1927 and completely gutted it and changed it into a private house architecturally of course living in a building on a narrow street you have issues of traffic noise and very little privacy at ground floor which is how we came up with the idea of an upside down house moving our main living spaces to the top where we could introduce skylights and open plan and using the lower floors for bedrooms [Music] we were somewhat concerned about losing our garden and so we created one we grow plants on the roof we can see from here the trees close to the houses of parliament so we do have a sense of being in an urban part of town [Music] good interior design is a mixture of accommodating how you use the house and bringing in character and memories and objects that have some sort of connection to you my husband comes from south africa i come from italy and we have all kinds of reminders of these places we come from and i think that's something that modern living allows a level of eclecticism that previously would have been considered bad taste
