truly overwhelming and if you guys haven't seen that video i will put a link of it somewhere here and guys we hit 100 subscribers creating valuable content for you guys and seeing you actually enjoy it is so so so rewarding so once again thank you so much for your support and i really do hope to keep inspiring you because this is exactly what i want to achieve with this channel okay now let's get into the actual video and explain what we're doing today and as you guys can see by the title this is an ikea hack video and honestly who doesn't like an ikea hack idea and if you don't know what an ikea hack is it's when you get ikea products and customize alter tweak say it however you want how a given design is meant to be assembled and used now i think we're all familiar with the ikea callux shelving unit it's right behind me it's a very versatile product and there have been an array of ikea kalax hacks from bed frames to vinyl record shelves to bar cabinets to the infamous ikea calyx bench which was literally everywhere a few years ago and many more so in today's video we will be transforming the ikea kalex shelving unit into a kitchen island and yes this has been done before but a detachable one now you may be wondering why would anyone need a detachable kitchen island well let me tell you why my partner and i live in a small apartment and the kitchen especially is really really small so we had already agreed on the fact that we needed some extra surface with some storage space and that we could also use as a breakfast nook potentially but most importantly we want to have the freedom to move one of the units into the living room or the balcony for when we have people over you know if that ever becomes a thing again and that we could use as an extra surface now in order to transform it into a kitchen island we of course need a countertop and for that i will be using the ikea carlby countertop which is right behind me and i scored that into the discount section for half price it was 75 euros down from 850 just because it was already cut in the middle which is not an issue for us since we will need to cut it even shorter anyway i will also be adding wheels for legs since we want to be moving it around and rearranging it and finally i will connect the two units with a magnet strip i'm a little bit worried about that part i'm not sure if this vision it will be executed the way i've imagined it to so fingers crossed and you guys i bought everything like three months ago and i honestly can't wait to have this project finished and done with now the first step would be to assemble the akia calyx unit but i've already gone ahead and done that i just figured there's no reason explaining to you guys how to assemble ikea furniture since they already come with instructions in the box and this one specifically is so easy to make it literally took me like 10 minutes to build so let's go ahead and take it from the next step which is to cut and assemble the countertop let's go so i will be using two wheels with a stopper and two fixed ones on each unit and first i am making my markings before i drill a small hole where the screws will go in and just make sure that the wheel itself is aligned with the edge of the unit otherwise the two units won't be able to connect [Music] and finally i am attaching the wheels and keep in mind that i am placing the same set of wheels on the short edge of the unit before attaching the countertop i had to cut it a bit shorter because it was way too long and i decided to make the protrusion even on all sides so about 12 to 12 and a half centimeters on each side the total dimensions of the countertop after cutting it are 63.5 by 89 centimeters [Music] so using my jigsaw i cut it down to my preferred dimensions and now i will be adding a pvc tape for furniture unfortunately the one i could find was not the exact color match it's a bit darker but personally i don't really mind since this side will be hidden in the connection anyway sadly its quality is not the best i've used much better ones but i had to work with what i had [Music] so i am attaching it with a warm iron make sure it's not extremely hot [Music] and then i'm going over it with a rolling pin to press it down and finally i am cutting the excess tape with a blade [Music] now before attaching the worktop i'm spreading some silicone glue on calyx's surface and then very carefully and with the help of alex we glued the worktop down that's definitely a two-person job if you want to make sure your work top is perfectly aligned and i would highly suggest making some markings on the countertop to help you with your alignment you can also screw a couple of screws for extra security which we did off-camera now i know i said in the intro that i will be using a magnet strip but i couldn't find one anywhere at short notice so i decided to use a door magnet with a metal corner instead and i will be attaching that under the countertop and as with the wheels i am making my markings and drilling a small hole first to enable the screw going in and once both pieces were secure i repeat the same process on the other side and that completes the ikea kalax kitchen island hack so i have the final result right next to me and you guys will see it in three two one [Music] [Applause] [Music] uh [Music] ah you guys i am so happy and relieved it is finally finished it didn't take very long to make you can definitely do it in a few hours but we had so many ups and downs along the way mostly downs to be honest for once we had to buy most of the materials on monday so three days before posting this video and that was also the day the stores opened here in cyprus after a few weeks of quarantine and that alone was stressful because of the short time frame i had to shoot the video but guys we could not find the pvc tape anywhere i was so close to dropping this video idea and shoot it at some point in the future but luckily we found it last minute and i know it is not even the same color but that was literally the only one i could find but then we realized we bought the wrong set of wheels so we had to go to the store the day after and exchange them for the correct ones and then when attaching the magnet we realized it was not strong enough to hold the two units together so we had to go back to the store again and get a bigger and stronger one and after opening about dozens of holes we realized the magnet and the metal corner were visible because we had attached them on the vertical side instead of under the countertop and that definitely took way longer than it should have also because i had to go in with filler and cover the holes and finally while screwing the magnet we realized that a pair of hooks would have probably been a better option because that would minimize the gap between the two units and it would also lock them in place for good now although it is locked in place it is detaching quite easily and we would have preferred it to be a little bit more secure and now that i got everything off my chest i have to admit that now that it's finished and locked in place and decorated i really really like it i am very happy with how it turned out it definitely elevates the space and makes it more modern which was certainly needed in this small kitchen and i really like how the white calyx contrasts the dark brown countertop so what do you guys think is this something you would make let me know in the comment section down below i really hope this tutorial helps someone i think it's perfect for small apartments where space is limited and i really think that because it is detachable it can have multiple uses not only for smaller spaces but for bigger ones as well like for example for when you throw a party i don't know why but the only thing i can think of lately is throwing a party am i being too optimistic but it's something you don't need to have in your living room the whole year around instead you can just bring it out whenever you have people over and use it as an extra surface to place food and drinks so if you like this video don't forget to hit the thumbs up button it really really does help also share it with your friends and family or those you think would find such tutorial helpful and last but not least don't forget to subscribe to
