[Music] hi friends it's diana here today and today we're going to be talking about shearing now it is such a nice pretty method for dresses skirts all kinds of things um and it looks so scary but it really isn't once you get the hang of it you get your settings on your machine right it's as easy as just sewing straight lines so let's go ahead and talk a little bit about it and get started so we can share some of our fabric and see how easy it really is okay the first thing we want to do is we want to prep our fabric now because this is a sleeve i've already hemmed the top and the bottom if you're making a dress you might not need to hem the bottom because you might be attaching it to something else or the top if you're attaching it to something else at the top so depending on what you're doing with it you might need to hem or not it really is up to you then we get a marker fabric now this fabric is amazing it's got um if you can't kind of really see see the lines on the flowers uh there are from one line to the next one is about a half an inch so i can just kind of look at that and go by that some fabrics will have the stripes or something that can guide you so you can keep you straight but if your fabric doesn't then i recommend that you mark your fabric um there's a couple different ways to mark your fabric this is a this is a um fabric marker um this one is air soluble so it after a while it just disappears by itself this one is a white marking pen now this one um will disappear with heat so you can apply heat afterwards to your fabric and it will disappear and there's some other different kinds there's also you can also use like uh kids uh washable marker you'll just have to wash your garment afterwards so it just depends on what you're going for then we want to go ahead and take a ruler and we want to measure i like to start about a half an inch from the top from the hem but again this all depends on what it is that you're making how high up you want to start or whatever and what you want to do is you want to uh mark your fabric about uh half an inch down so i'm doing like i said half an inch down from the top but you want to go ahead and mark your fabric so you're gonna do a straight line now honestly i with shearing if you're straight your your line is not 100 straight i don't really worry about about it being 100 straight it will be fine because it will be gathered you won't be able to tell anyway so you if you want to go ahead and keep going all the way down marking your fabric at a half an inch gap or if you have your uh sewing machine has like a tail on it and you'll be able to tell uh how far it is then um you can do it that way as well so let's see i marked my first couple of lines now you can do you can mark them uh about a half an inch away to a quarter inch it really is up to you how wide or how skinny you want your shearing to be okay so now once it's marked let's go ahead and talk about our actual showing sewing machine showing machine shearing sewing machine show machine sewing machine let's do it all right today i'm using a brother gx37 this is a pretty basic sewing machine um it does basically everything i need it to do um some miso machines will be different depending on where they have their uh tension um their stitch uh width and their stitch length and here's all the stitches so it your saw machine may look a little bit different but really all you need to do is find out how you can change your tension and how you can change your stitch length and that is really all you need that's only the only thing that's going to be you're going to change really so right now my station likes instead of two that's what i usually sew at i'm using a straight stitch number two just a straight stitch but it's usually set at two i'm going to switch it all the way up to four which is my longest stitch um then my width i'm going to just keep it the same because i'm not doing zigzag i'm just doing straight and then my tension i usually keep it out of five but i'm gonna move it all the way up to between a seven and an eight somewhere around there probably just a seven eight it really um it's up to your machine you can try i like to usually try first and see what it looks like and then go on from there i have the thread at the top that's going to match my fabric uh color and then in my bobbin let's talk about our bobbin so here's my bobbin i am using i'm running out of elastic i am using this little elastic right here elastic thread um you can order it uh from online or some stores carry it then i'm going to thread hand thread my bobbin so i'll hand wind my bobbin so i'm just doing it lightly i'm not stretching my bobbin i'm just just winding it putting the thread in there lightly all the way around once that's all the way around and obviously this is not very full because i had been using already i already did some shearing earlier but you can fill it up i wouldn't over fill it because i wouldn't want it to get stuck in the case in the bobbin case so i would make sure that there's still a little bit of space if you run out what you're sewing that's okay you just back and forth and start at the same spot and keep going i've done that and it will and it will work just fine um but you want to make sure that you're always kind of watching it um but yeah okay so now i'm gonna show you how to put it in the case all right so now i'm just gonna put it in the case just like i would do any regular bobbin this one out i hemmed my fabric so i had my bobbin in there and i'm going to just remember to put it so that your thread is hanging out the back so it's face up i'm going to put it right in the case and then i'm going to make sure i have to make sure that it goes through the tension discs now because it's a thicker um it's a thicker uh not not as thin as thread it might be a little bit harder for you to get it into that the tension disc right there but you want to make sure that it's cut on there because if it's not your tension is going to be all messed up on the back and it's not going to give you a good shearing so make sure it's cut on your tension if you already change your tension at the top it should be good right here so then i'm going to go ahead and just put it in there and finish it up and now we are ready to do some sharing all right so now here is my uh where i go backwards and forwards uh uh my reverse i couldn't think of the word um so before i get started a lot of times i like to go ahead and pull hold my thread go with my down with my needle and pull that out so i can go ahead and pull my elastic out my bobbin so now they're both back there okay and ready to go and now we're going to go ahead and put our fabric make sure where that line is just line it up put our needle down and go and go back and here we go we want to go back to set that stitch so that it gets caught on there i'm just following my line that i made earlier it's already sort of disappearing but it's still there and then when i get to the end i'm going back again and forwards and pull it out and cut and there is my first line of shearing so you can tell my straight line in the back this is what it's supposed to look in the back if it looks wavy that means that your bobbin tension is not correct or your bobbin was not cut on your tension disc it's not giving the correct tension now we'll go to the second line okay go forward backward and go [Music] i am not pulling my fabric i am not i'm just holding it and kind of straightening it out so that my my sewing machine will just so that stitch and there is my second line and as i keep going it's going to create more and more of that look all the way down so let me go ahead and finish all the way down the sleeve how pretty is that [Music] all right unfortunately i'm running out of thread because there was a elastic thread there wasn't that much elastic thread on that uh bobbin so i got to go back and thread it and i did do this one a little bit wider and then these other ones i kind of went in a little bit because i didn't mark the lines but like i said that's okay look you can't even really tell very much especially when you're wearing it but it like i said if you if you want it to be very even you want to make sure you mark every single line unlike me i didn't really mark all of the lines but i'm going to go ahead and thread more of my bobbin and continue to finish my uh sleeve but isn't it so cute i just want to show you again how i'm threading my bobbin i'm just fitting it through that uh little hole right there on my bobbin slippery slippery if i can get it sometimes i should cut that that's always better get it right through the bobbin and then i like to hold it and thread again i'm not pulling on it i'm just threading it lightly so that it it's not tight on there it's just on there nicely and i'm going all the way around and that is how you do your shearing all right so we are done with our sleeve our shearing is done it looks super cute you can't even tell that my gap is a little bit bigger on this side and once you put it on it will fit nicely look at how cute since i left that gap at the top and at the bottom it just gives it like this wiggle effect that i love now um a lot of times if your sharing is not as tight as you like it you can go back with your arm and steam it and that will even make it to be a little bit tighter you see that it kind of shrinks the elastic and makes it tighter um right there so it will be really super cute well i hope you enjoyed this tutorial please let me know if you have any questions about anything that i did um it is super easy come share your projects with us um over on ellie and mac facebook page
