hi everybody welcome to another session of write to the top I'm Adam in today's video I want to talk to you about vocabulary but more specifically I want to discuss some car locations okay now it's very important to have a very wide range of vocabulary when you're approaching the writing section of course it's very important for the reading very important for the speaking as well but in the writing section knowing a lot of words is the most important aspect you're the most important tool you have so what we're going to look today at is the IELTS and TOEFL writing section but more specifically we're going to look at some car locations with the verb take now why did I choose take well you know the five most common verbs in English are take make have get and do okay and what you want to do is try to minimize your use of these five verbs there are always alternatives now I made a video about alternatives to the verb do and you can find a link up here or in the description box I also made another video with collocations with the verb make eventually I'll get through all five of these verbs now the reasons the reason it's important to know these collocations is because you can still use the verb take and make and do and have and get but what you can do is use them in car locations now what is a collocation a collocation is a pairing or a grouping of words that often go together they just work together to have a very specific meaning in a very specific context so we're gonna look at a bunch of examples I'll tell you what they mean I'll give you some synonyms that you can use instead and I'll show you some sample sentences let's start with the first one to take steps or to take measures or to take action basically these all mean the same thing it's to take the necessary steps you can also add things in in the middle take the necessary steps take active measures or synonyms to do something or enact measures what does this mean to take steps basically means to do something okay you have a goal you have a target you need to reach what you want to do is take steps do the things that are necessary to reach that target okay or goal or aim or whatever so here's an example it is a government duty to provide its citizens with the necessary infrastructure to maintain their daily lives now all the examples I'm giving you are from the general the more common topics of the IELTS and TOEFL essays so the necessary infrastructure exception this includes taking active measures to ensure public transportation so there I'm using active measures I can also say this includes taking the necessary steps this includes taking action to ensure make sure that you have your goal ensure public transportation is efficient and affordable make sure that the goal is also clearly mentioned when you take steps you're taking them to a goal make sure you mention that goal okay that's the first one now I want to make sure that you don't get confused with other uses of take measure or things like that take measure of the situation this is a very completely different meaning notice that I don't have measures I have measure singular measures are steps take measure of something means to evaluate okay and you can use that as a synonym evaluate or take something's measurements measurements not measure okay both are nouns but very different meanings measurements length width height height sorry etc so evaluate for the first one measure for the second one before making any final decision a good manager will take a measure of the situation he will evaluate he will look around see what's going on and then determine the possible outcomes okay before you do anything take measure of the situation what's going on okay and then make a decision very straightforward before buying a new bed it is good it is a good idea to take the beds measurements length widths to make sure it will fit in the room very straightforward take the measurement measure okay that's another way to put it so just make sure you don't confuse take a measure of and take measures two very different meanings okay so let's look at the next one take effect so this is a very common collocation take effect basically means to begin to work as it was designed okay planned or intended or to become active you have a plan and once it takes effect means it's starting to work its active in the way it was planned to be when you're talking about medication you take a pill it takes a little while for it to take effect for it to start working policy become active rules new rules will take effect starting next week etc start or happen or good synonyms if you don't want to use the collocation most medication takes effect after a certain amount of time leading many uninformed patients to overdose as they don't feel it working and ingest more so a lot of people there may be to have a pain or they back pain headache whatever so they take some pills now a lot of people don't understand that the medicine needs to go into your stomach it needs to be absorbed by the bloodstream it needs to start working it takes a little time a lot of people don't understand that for the medicine to take effect takes time and I'll talk about take time after so they take more pills and this is what happens when they overdose to overdose means to take too much of any medication or drug to the point of it being dangerous okay so take effect another example once the new law takes a once it becomes active and becomes the working law of the land smoking in public places will be treated as a misdemeanor offense with a fine of up to $1,000 so right now you can smoke in public places but a new law has been passed it's not it hasn't started to work yet but next week it will take effect means starting next week it is the law starting next week if you smoke in a public place you will be charged and given up penalty a misdemeanor offense is different from a criminal offense you're not going to be considered a criminal you will just be breaking a car a local law and you will get a penalty you won't go to jail or go to court or anything like that okay so take effect start or become active take with a grain of salt now collocations include idioms and what we have here is an idiom to take something with a grain of salt means not to believe it completely okay to suspect or be hesitant these are synonyms to be hesitant to accept something means you'll take it but you're not gonna believe it 100% you're gonna be a little bit suspicious okay these days many people approach the mainstream media with some suspicion they take news stories with a grain of salt believing that other stories may soon appear to counter the former's claims so people are a little bit suspicious of the media they take news stories from media in general then take news stories with a grain of salt they suspect the information a little bit they don't trust in 100% because they know that next week there will be a new story that is opposite to what they read today so they don't exactly trust everything they read in the newspapers everything they hear on TV everything they see on the Internet take with a grain of salt when when somebody when you're dressed up and you go out and somebody tells you oh you look amazing you know take everything with a grain of salt because you know they just want to flatter you get something from you you never know or maybe you just look very good take into consideration or take into account same meaning you can use both of them in the same way basically means to think about how something may affect something else so when before you do something consider or take into consideration what this how this thing or this person or this situation will affect that thing right you're always going to basically be relating to things people situations or consider something when making a decision so take into consideration if you don't want to use the collocation which by the way you should graders are looking for idiomatic language collocations etc you can just use a simple verb consider to consider or to think about okay teachers must take into account or take into consideration many factors when designing their curriculum such as students abilities backgrounds and other things so a teacher is designing the curriculum for the year he or she must think about must take into consideration what their students can handle what they can't handle how old they are how often are they gonna do homework how much is too much homework how much is too little etc a lot of factors a lot of things to take into account before making the curriculum before designing it okay take for granted now this is a very common collocation people use this on a pretty regular basis in spoken language it's used quite commonly now before I just explain what it means I also want you to notice I'm using also you can also use taken for granted something is taken for granted this is the passive this car location in particular is quite commonly used in its passive form so just keep that in mind I tell you often and other teachers tell you try to avoid the passive there are situations where the passive is actually good and this is one of those situations so anyway so to take for granted means to assume something is true or something will happen will occur etc without having any evidence you really don't have any any real reason to believe that something will happen you just assume it will maybe it's happened many times before so you just assume it will happen again also another meaning of it and is related it's not to appreciate something enough because you think it's always there okay so thinking something will happen because it's happened before means you're taking that action for granted if you take a person for granted you just don't appreciate that person because you think oh that person is always gonna be there he or she will always help me I can always count on this person but a day will come where that just won't be true and then you'll be in a bit of trouble okay a couple of examples many students take university admission for granted and fail to properly prepare their applications as a result they end up being rejected by their first choice schools so a lot of students in high school they have very good grades they join sports clubs they just take for granted that they will be accepted into their unit first-choice University okay they just assume that they'll get in easily so they don't take their application very seriously this is a big mistake okay because everybody doesn't matter your situation well how good of a student you are you have to take serious things seriously okay don't take anything for granted okay in many Western countries free speech rights our grant are taken for granted so here I'm using it as a passive okay while in other countries these freedoms have to be fought for for so for example if you think about Canada or the u.s. anybody can say almost anything in the media except for hate speech but otherwise if you have an opinion you're free to express it if you have something to say against the politician say so publicly nothing can happen to you okay you're free to do so but people take this for granted they think they will always have this freedom but times change history changes eventually certain rights if you don't appreciate them if you don't fight for them regularly so times they're taken away from you right in other countries they have to fight for whatever freedoms they get they don't take it for granted because it's not freely given to them it's not always there okay very good expression try to use it take advantage of so again two meanings if you find someone who is weak or vulnerable so vulnerability is a noun vulnerable is the adjective means easy to take advantage of easy to use easy to get benefits out of because they're in a weak position so to take advantage of somebody is to get benefits from them to take something from them because they're too weak to fight you or they're too weak to even understand that you're doing it to them so you're getting a benefit based on their weakness on a less negative note you can also extract benefits from something okay so in Canada for example we have a lot of it's a huge country lots of resources but the Canadian government doesn't take enough advantage of the resources right so the government should take more advantage of the natural resources in the country okay you can take advantage of a person a place a thing etc it is very common these days for child creditors people who attack and look for children to take advantage of to find their victims online they take advantage of these kids lack of experience in protecting their identities so kids kids are a little bit naive they don't understand how dangerous the world is so they're not they're not taking good care to protect themselves online so these predators these attackers these hunters take advantage of that inexperience and they find their victims okay international students are advised to take advantage of the universities language labs and resources to help them with their assignments so those of you who are going to study overseas when you get to your university find out what resources are there available for you to use okay and when you find these resources take advantage of them use them get the most benefit from these resources language labs tutors books etc make good use out of everything take advantage of these things now take the time and take time these are two different things so take the time to do something means don't be in a hurry okay don't hurry and do it the proper pace students who take the time they need to properly learn the subject matter and work through the materials will successfully complete a program those who rush will face difficulties later on so take the time we're talking about time and using time but notice we're taking the time not take time take the time to do or the time you need etc as opposed to take time something that takes time basically it requires time or it progresses it carries on for a while good business leaders understand that success takes time and they and that's trying to reach a goal prematurely early will only result in negative outcomes okay so something takes time basically it takes time it goes on for a little while until it's finished etc okay take charge of when you take charge of something you're taking control you're taking command you're taking the lead of that situation of that thing etc so control okay only those who take charge of their own education can hope to achieve success and growth if you wait for someone to teach you the things you need it will take you a long time to grow or it'll take you a long time if ever to succeed but if you take charge of your own education if you control how you learn when you learn what you learn you will find your own success okay and take responsibility basically accept responsibility admit to something so parents who do not teach their children to take responsibility for their actions are not preparing them for the realities of adulthood to take responsibility means to admit that you are responsible for your actions so you accept you take that responsibility in any action you do because every action has a consequence and if you don't take responsibility those consequences can hurt you okay and that's all we have for now there are more I can't give you a whole list it'll take hours to go through all of them but if you're not sure if you don't have other verbs to use instead of take use take but use take in a car location car locations are not used enough in the writing sections of the IELTS and TOEFL but they can add a lot of points to your score because they make their writing a little bit more interesting a little bit more varied okay so take advantage learn the car locations but very very important make sure you're using them correctly make sure you understand the context in which to use them and if you're not a hundred percent sure that you're using it correctly don't use it use one of the synonyms I showed you and work with that okay if you have any questions please ask me in the youtube comment section
