saturday as well so okay um so here we go everybody i'll speaking let's get into this um make sure to speak and repeat in today's class okay don't just listen it's a really good idea to copy my words my intonation my pronunciation it's very very smart to do that okay and everybody who's doing their speaking tomorrow good luck on that i see there's tons of either doing speaking tomorrow um students uh we just did speaking part two and i think a lot of you watched the last class that finished uh just 30 minutes ago so uh we did part two speaking and when you're doing part three you have to remember part two okay so you must remember and use your part two response in part three to get a high score uh band seven to nine okay so keep remembering that um also you should remember something else what else should you remember so we talked about borrowing a ladder right in the last part part two and you have to remember something else from part two uh what what should you remember everyone so i'm on good luck on your speaking i'm on try to join the live um speaking practice today that i'm going to do okay i'm going to be looking for you uh so i want to help out some of our regular yeah definitely you want to remember those other options okay um let's see what were those other options okay so remember the other options you should remember the other options you thought about so there was the option of the shovel i remember that one okay uh soccer ball or football yep janelle absolutely danielle very good jack hills even including the emoji of the soccer ball uh it's good to be visual janil so that's fantastic lena very good lina says remember the flashlight don't forget the flashlight yeah maybe you bought a flashlight for a camping trip absolutely okay uh maybe you borrowed some ingredients as well or some cooking uh materials a pot or a pan or something like that okay yeah so remember your other options those can be useful for your answers okay all right so let's practice one answer i'm going to talk some strategy while we're practicing this answer and then we're going to spend as much time as possible giving students a chance to interact with me in today's lesson and really practice and get some feedback okay so uh part two was about a ladder um borrowing a three meter ladder from our neighbor frank to clean the gutters um and the roof of our house and to uh pick the apples from the apple tree in the yard so that i could make some apple pies okay and then the examiner says okay that is the end of part two we will now continue with part three for this part i will ask you some more questions related to the topic of part two um let's talk about borrowing and lending all right and then here's our first question when is it a good idea to borrow an item instead of buying it okay so you want to give me um a full sentence answer for this one with explanation and example so it is a great idea to ask for a loaner when the item is not needed frequently and when it is unavailable as this can save time and money as well as decrease stress as i said i borrowed the ladder because i don't really need it often and it costs a pretty penny to buy one there we go so there's my bad nine answer all right um and i love how somebody found the emoji for ladder as well rajvinder says ladder flashlight soccer ball with emojis all right so um here we go students repeat after me okay so make sure to again repeat this okay repeat when is it a good idea to borrow an item instead of buying it it is a great idea to ask for a loaner when it when the items are not needed uh frequently and when it is uh unavailable as this can save time and money as well as decrease stress as i said i borrowed the ladder because i don't really need it often and it costs a pretty penny to buy one okay let's change that to simple uh singular okay um meet uh shadia is asking sir what does it mean um to ask for a loaner a loaner means an item that has been lent okay so a loaner item i'm teaching you vocabulary here so write this down when you have a chance is an item uh which has been lent to a person so sometimes you'll hear like a native speaker say oh is this your new car and then they'll say oh no it's just the loner it means that somebody lent it to them okay so it's just a loaner or it's just a rental if you rented it all right um students and then you might get a follow-up question like can you give an example and then um you might say something like uh this um well yes aside uh from borrowing a ladder i also uh needed uh to borrow a flashlight from uh frank the other day because um it was dark and i had lost my keys all the stores were closed so i wouldn't have been able to buy one even if i had wanted to okay um so this would be my it's a great idea to borrow an item when it's very expensive and a person is not going to use it again and again in the future just like i borrowed an expensive camera for my trip to georgia shaheen very good shaheen don't use the word you okay when you are not going to use it again and again when i am or when people or when an individual okay avoid the word you students okay you gets you into trouble you get you into trouble because um it's easier to go off topic it's unclear you're not actually talking about the examiner don't use the word you shaheen okay all right um le chica says when you know that you are going to use an item only once or rarely it is a good idea to borrow it instead of buying it legit the same thing when a person knows they are going to use an item only once or rarely it's a better idea for them to borrow it instead of buying it better communication okay very nice all right uh romaine says items uh people sell them use are not worth buying borrowing is a better option as money can be used more wisely okay romaine and then give an example examples examples students martin beck says the best idea to ask for a loan from a neighbor or friend can be on uh special occasions like a wedding or a birthday party or a housewarming last year on my birthday i bought a ladder to decorate my house a very nice smart own back i like it uh don't repeat the word party you've got party party party i like to party um but uh still for good communication uh try to say one word only once in your response like the word party okay so good all right we've got some good answers me i see your answer is quite good as well all right everybody we're on a roll uh so i'm going to give people chances to speak today as much as possible okay so i'm going to get right into it we're going to do a focus on practice and of course strategy while we do this so i'm going to actually call some of our viewers today as hopefully we have some volunteers and here we go okay so um ielts always has different questions and these could be very actual questions in fact they have had uh questions on borrowing and lending as well okay ooh dude says i got speaking band 7.5 lots of people will have a chance uh to practice today so abdel rahman says they're ready um always it's a good idea to ping somebody and test the system make sure it's working for you you have awesome okay so i'm going to ask you a question just like an ielts examiner about borrowing and lending uh give me a nice full sentence response remember to give an explanation so say the answer and then say because or since and then include an example okay okay all right so uh let's go back to the questions here um here we go okay so uh have lending and borrowing customs changed since the generation before yeah i think from in the in the [Music] before generation uh the landing emporium changed a lot like uh before there was a lot of people landing and borrowing things uh because i i think actually the affecting of social media that affected that a lot like uh in the last i poured a book from my friend it was really helpful but nowadays i don't think that's really useful okay all right let me give you some feedback um abdulrahman do you use your full name update or do you just use abdel you can use abdo okay all right i'm just curious it's not that i'm trying to simplify or anything i know i've met uh some people with your name and some of them simplified some of them don't anyway okay so your overall band score here um would be a five okay um and um five maybe a 5.5 but i would be more comfortable giving you a five i think that's what more examiners would get all right i think you can improve though and there are a couple of um quick steps that you can do to improve in a couple of um more challenging steps or more time involved steps okay so let me go over your uh the question in your answer so the question was have lending and boring customs changed since a generation before at the beginning you were a little bit stuck and then maybe you were nervous right i mean it's your first time doing this but the start was a little bit slow so you're fluent your fluency at the beginning was a bit slow okay so that's why it's good that you're volunteering because you're building confidence and that's why you must show up to your ielts exam early practice with other students really just use english on the day of your test so that you feel as confident as possible and then you can start speaking right away when the questions come okay all right abdel are you there okay okay good good all right um so you started a bit slow and it was a bit of an awkward start so you said i think from in the before generation um so instead of saying that you should have said something like um past generations just really start quick and simple past generations uh had very different uh lending and borrowing uh customs okay so really use the question and uh you don't have to paraphrase um if you're not sure okay just answer nice and quick from the beginning so past generations had very different lending and boring customs now very importantly uh abdul um the grammar of the question have lending and boring customs change what grammar is that i think this is the best perfect not past present perfect right because it's have not happened present perfect exactly so you want to show that in your answer but you didn't show that in your answer and ideally you show it at least twice okay so past generations had very different lending and boring customs so this um tradition has changed in the last uh 20 years okay so immediately i'm showing this has changed and now it's more uh present perfect okay um so you can say something like uh people have been uh borrowing less and less these days because they buy uh what they need and they are shy i know my grandmother i used to borrow and lend items uh from her neighbor almost every week like ladder or sugar okay but these days people don't do this or you could use present perfect one more time people haven't been doing it as much okay and that would get you that high band score all right so let me go over the question go over this answer again and then i'll ask you the question and copy the answer okay so here we go have lending and boring customs change since the generation before past lending and borrowing customs change since the generation before yes i think the emporium has changed in the last two years uh in the last two years that was more boring and landing then these days these days uh pouring and landing less than the past two years because all of the people can buy whatever they want so uh like my grandfather my grandfather uh he told me that he always used to learn uh anything from his neighbor like leather or flashlight so yeah i think it really changed okay that was much better so you had much better fluency in that response you still didn't use the present perfect so practice using the present perfect in your spoken english okay that's really important for you you have to use it to improve your band score but that answer um would have been definitely a 5.5 and even closer to a six okay so um so you're already improving just by having better structure make sure to include the present perfect and careful with details not two years but 20 years right because it's a full generation okay so 20 years all right abdel rahman thank you for volunteering that was great uh you're very courageous and you're welcome everybody gave up del ruckman uh an applause and uh everybody make sure to reflect the grammar of questions okay abdul rahman hang in there and keep practicing keep repeating these answers okay okay all right bye for now okay so that eight um i was able to even with um the like our connection wasn't super clear i could still understand every word that you were saying abdel rahman's your pronunciation is fine students don't worry about your pronunciation most of you will have band seven eight pronunciation okay it's much more about the coherence and about the grammar range accuracy and fluency okay those are the points you have to pay attention to the most all right um let's take another volunteer so uh we've got yaz in here um we've got uh shaheen vapool um i think vipul i mentioned that i i think and we pull in amman beautiful world cassandra manila you are in manila all right awesome how is it in manila uh it's quite chilly here because of the uh holiday season okay all right i hear manila is quite beautiful yes of course okay i'd actually like to visit there one day okay um so uh i will ask you a part three question just like in the real exam um give me a full sentence answer use the question use the grammar of the question in your answer okay and then i'll give you some analysis and feedback sounds good sure all right cassandra okay so um here we go what are good policies to follow when lending expensive objects to friends or family uh when it comes to uh implementing the best uh policies to lending some luxurious items within friends or family members is that this we should have transparent transparency especially when it comes to these items it's really there are really about valuable items that could make a fortune when it's lost like we should have have a written document with some rules and you know some conditions with it so that it could be you know fair enough to the two parties like uh the other time my uncle uh actually he wants to land my dad's suv uh for almost two months and actually my dad rhys was not close to my uncle so that he actually um asked my uncle that he will go going to have a written document with some witnesses to it and i think that's uh one of the things uh that could do uh so that it could have a fair and worthy uh can there be negative outcomes so i'm interrupting you right and don't answer the next question i'm just giving you an example here so um you're doing a great job cassandra however um when you drag out your answer like this so when you're when you keep going and going and going um without any visible end uh to the answer then the examiner will interrupt you and that's very dangerous okay you don't want that because if i interrupt you it means we're both speaking at the same time and that means you're getting frustrated you're not catching the question clearly even when somebody interrupts us in our own language it can get very confusing in the conversation yet alone in a foreign language when we get interrupted right it's even more confusing and frustrating um so you don't want that so my first uh tip to you cassandra is um shorten your answers and just be a little bit more direct okay all right so uh you would get i think like a band six for that response um [Music] on a really good day maybe a 6.5 but i i would be safer to say a band six however i think that you should be getting at least a band seven to seven point five for your english level so the interesting part of the ielts exam is for the examiners it's sometimes difficult too because we can hear when a student is a higher band score and they're speaking like i can hear that your true english speaking level is like a band seven but i can't give you that so i have to stick to the rules and the marking criteria of the exam um so i can only give you that bad seven if you're showing me that bad seven and you can do that okay and i'll explain how how okay so um you had a very nice natural start with some good paraphrasing so he said when it comes to uh implementing the best policies to lending some luxurious items to friends or family i really like that beginning that was i think clear seven and this is one of the reasons cassandra i'm suggesting to you to keep it short because i felt the more you were speaking the more marks you were losing okay okay so so you don't want to do that so um and then you said is we should have transparency really nice vocabulary transparency absolutely transparency for everybody who's watching it means that you can see through so it means that we're not hiding um any information or we're not hiding the truth we're presenting all of the facts and the truth that means that we have transparency it's a nice expression okay and then it started to get a little bit off okay so you said especially these valuable items could make a fortune that doesn't really make sense um i think what you meant there was especially uh these valuable items could cost a fortune now in this case it's better to give quantitative information like some numbers cassandra so cost a fortune like um [Music] uh fifty thousand dollars okay okay okay the reason i'm saying fifty thousand dollars is not by accident because i'm already thinking about the suv that my father is lending to my uncle okay so especially these valuable items that cost a fortune like fifty thousand dollars and then here um you should keep it more concise okay so um here i would say uh therefore it's good to have a written document with some rules and conditions and then you said so you know um it could be fair enough i don't know right i'm just the examiner i'm not here to judge i'm not here to give my opinions i'm here to ask you so avoid using this you know i know it's a natural filler i know a lot of people say even native speakers like you know you know but it's not considered good quality communication so in a business meeting i would never with my partners or clients or others use this kind of expression like you know you know because they'd look at me and be like no adrian we don't know that's why we're here um so so avoid it in professional communication okay you have to be able to separate professional and non-professional so um uh we we don't need this last part we want to be a little bit more concise okay and then came your example you said like the other time my uncle wants to lend his suv are you still with me cassandra yes sure i'm listening all right okay um so here you made that classic mistake of land and borrow all right and this would definitely be one of those mistakes that hurts you from that band-aid or band 9 because a band-aid or a bad nine level candidate would not make that confusion of lend and borrow so what i think you meant to say here is like the other time my uncle wanted past tense to borrow okay and i know it's a tricky one with this borrowing and lending people often make this mistake to borrow my uh dad's uh suv um and then you can say uh so my dad my father asked my uncle to have a written contract which is fine right even between brothers or friends you know you're lending your 50 000 car you might want to write down not because they don't trust each other but just so everybody remembers exactly what the terms and conditions of the deal was right so but you don't have to explain that right so the examiner is not going to judge you so cassandra the examiner is not going to be like oh really your your father with his own sibling needs a contract they're not going to judge him like yeah maybe they would do it too okay all right okay so um so this would be your more concise answer okay so here we go um i'm going to read the question give the answer and then you'll have a chance to answer again okay um use the answer that i'm giving you okay so here we go um what are good policies to follow when lending expensive objects to friends or family when it comes to implementing the best policies to lending some luxurious items to clever that's really good that you're actively thinking and reading you're not just reading um but again you don't need to be that quick okay so you can be about 15 slower and it's still a bad nine fluency easily okay but that's what a bad nine answer sounds like okay okay make sense yes all right cassandra thank you so much for volunteering and uh have an awesome rest of your day in manila keep now uh i'm from uh south india uh from a coastal city called vijaywada it's in a southwestern part of india are you on the and you're coastal so you're on the ocean yeah close to it about a one hour distance from ocean okay that's my bed it's beautiful awesome okay babu so um i will ask you um an ielts uh part three question about lending and borrowing please give me a full sentence answer use the question in your response and then i'll analyze your response okay sure yeah okay all right um so here we go can there be negative outcomes to lending valuable items i certainly believe there could be uh consequences when lending expensive items uh just uh the other weekend my uncle lent his new top of the line bmw to one of his friends for a long weekend trip um after finishing his trip and returning back home while parking in his parking lot while backing up uh my uncle's friend um uh hit the left rear indicator light and um it's we couldn't blame him either because it's a very congested parking space in this building but um i i i can see on my uncle's face that he really regretted his decision for lending it to his friends okay okay um so good good good good i'm just catching the end of what you were saying here i'm always trying to type out as much of the student responses so i can give you accurate feedback okay so uh very good um by the way when we do like live speaking with me for the full session and we record the session so i don't have to type so it's a little bit easier um but here we go so here's the question the answer i'll analyze it um and um and then uh we'll talk about it so we'll we'll you know we'll figure out how to make this even better uh firstly your band score i think would be like um 6 point five um five examiners might give you a six babu five might give you a six point five the reason why is because you have good english so you have pretty good fluency and your grammar is quite accurate and you're using a good range of words um you're not misusing the words you get stuck in your fluency but i think you're getting stuck more because of ideas rather than because of your english however you were missing one key part of your answer do you know what that is what you were missing uh using numbers um numbers yeah numbers is always that's always good so that's a good that's a safe answer but i wasn't actually thinking about numbers here so let me read your answer and then maybe you can figure this out so you said um certainly i believe there could be consequences when lending expensive items just the other week my uncle lent his bmw to his friend there's something missing between these two parts what is that some if you if you want to get a get some help there's some answers in the chat some people are answering this question correctly in the chat lilly for example and farooq and bandita have the right answer here you see it bubbu explanation yeah the explanation right so the easiest way to get a high band score is just to really keep this structure in your head for the answer so answer explain example right so you went from your answer directly into your example which is okay but see what happened is because you jumped from your answer right away into the example you took more time to develop your example and it started to get a little bit awkward when you were trying to explain to me the situation that happened where the friend smashed one of the the taillights of the car because somebody backed into them in a tight parking spot and it was getting a bit confusing and overly complex and almost off topic and that's when the examiner might interrupt you that's when you start losing scores for coherence for clarity so you want to avoid that so really what you want to focus on is simple answer simple explanation simple example right like um certainly i believe there could be consequences that was really nice paraphrasing by the way so uh certainly or cert or i certainly believe there could be consequences when lending expensive items and then the explanation such as losing a lot of money and possibly a valuable relationship if the item is lost or damaged okay so that's that's the uh that's the explanation right and keep it simple right so that's what happens when people lend expensive items and that person breaks or loses that item then that can lead to the end of a friendship that can lead to losing a lot of money which can be kind of painful so that's all you need to say right and then you can say just the other week my uncle lent his bmw to his friend and don't go into like a very complex kind of example his friend crashed the car um and it cost my uncle uh more than uh five thousand dollars uh to fix okay and that's it i wouldn't even say their friendship ended or anything like that just ended there that's enough to exemplify your explanation okay so um here we go i'm going to read the question and the answer and then just repeat the answer sounds good babu cassandra like i know you guys are reflecting and reading and that's fine but just so you know like what fluency is required for bad nine you don't have to speak that quickly you can actually speak about 10 percent slower and you'll still get a bad nine and your pronunciation just like cassandra's just like many other students is absolutely good enough to get a band 8 band 9. no problem i can understand all of your words 100 clear and i'm sure the other examiners will too okay so that's fine you just have to put together the correct answer with the correct grammar okay and that's what you need to do all right so don't forget your explanations right so keep the structure answer explain example and uh keep it don't so don't over speak okay okay all right baboo awesome job keep it up i
