hello and this is sunny welcome back today my topic is Igoe a Oh 2001 Q standard and a VLAN tagging and the trunking basics I will talk about many terminologies such as dot1q VLAN tag trunk trunk trunk port and excess part I will use one example to show what they are and how they work RGBA o - Darwin Q often referred to as Darwin Q is the networking standard that supports reliance on the Internet network the standard defines of a method of attacking traffic between two switches to tell with traffic belongs to which we live let's take a look at one simple example on switch 1 we assign computer a to Valente and we assign computer B to VLAN 20 on switch to we assign computer say to VLAN 10 and a computer deed to VLAN 20 we can see that both computer a and sa belong to VLAN 10 and a computer B and a D belong to VLAN 20 however villas are local to each switch and VLAN information is not passed between switches we needed to link these two switches so that a computers on the same VLAN could communicate this link is called a trunk a trunk or called a Oh - Darwin Q link or Darwin Q link or simply trunk link provides VLAN ID for frames traversing between switches a chunk can be configured between two switches or between a switch and a router by default a trunk can carry traffic from all the lines to and from the switch but it can be configured to carry only specified VLAN traffic the process with chambers and difference fail and traffic over the trunk is called chunking the reason that a single link could become a trunk is not because of a some special physical keyboard but it's simply because of our configurations with switch ports on both ends of the link chunk port chalkboard is a cisco term in the noun Cisco world it is called tag port regardless the name it means the same thing a chunk port would add a violent head to a Ethernet frame to indicate what VLAN the frame belongs to let's learn one more term access port a access port or untagged port in a non Cisco world is a switch port that sense and expects to receive traffic with an oval and tag in other words access port carries traffic only for one rely in summary to make a difference VLAN traffic travel across two switches we need a trunk a trunk is created by configuring trunk ports a trunk port sense and expects to receive text traffic access port sense or expect to receive our attempt traffic now let's come back to our example suppose computer a wants to talk to computers say on switch - it is Saints a frame keep in mind this frame is normal layer 2 Ethernet frame nothing special this frame has a source and destination and etc but has no information about a VLAN 10 I want to emphasize that a computer attached to access port has no idea about a villain and even is villain belong wheel and creation and management are switches responsibilities voice which one casts the ethernet frame from computer a Eden knows their frame comes from a member of VLAN 10 and it goes to another member of Valentin on switch - thus it needs to send the frame to switch to over the trunk for that purpose switch one does one thing on into trunk port inserting a VLAN tab into the ethernet frame the tag consists of four fields the first the field contains the information that a treeless Ethernet devices to recognize this is a frame to a villain the second field is used for quality of a service and the third field is one bit of lab which is always set to zero for Ethernet switches it could be said for token ring networks but it is rarely used in practice the last field is VLAN identifier which can be a number from one to four thousand 94 in our example the text Villa ID is a 10 once the tag is inserted to the Ethernet frame the new frame is called i triple e ãao to Darwin Q frame the process were adding or inserting VLAN tag into the ethernet frame is called tagging or encapsulation they mean the same thing now is a time to travel across the trunk we can imagine the trunk is mottling highway each lane is for each in different VLAN traffic when we took as the frame on the trunk port it a knows from the tag that the frame should be forward to compute a say on VLAN 10 remember access port expects own tactic frames thus switch to through so wait the VLAN tag and it delivers the original Ethernet frame to computer see the whole process of tagging and the trunk key is done in this video we talked about dot1q standard and related terminologies which would help to understand some other related protocols such as Cisco's VLAN trunking protocol and dynamic trunking protocol besides this basic knowledge would be very helpful to understand the two of the most confusing terms in a Cisco world the default Villa and the native VLAN which is my topic in my next video thank you very much and see you next time [Music]
