[Music] [Music] hendrix probably i think hendricks is probably the most influential there's nobody like him and there's nobody close to him and there's nobody been close to him since he's out there on his own there's hendrix and then there's everybody else this is denmark's tweet a vibrant place in the west end of london known for its rich music history this was the place you would go to if you meant anything in the music scene paul simon the beatles the stones eric clapton jimmy page at some point they all wandered these streets imagine all these living legends visiting the shops checking out the latest gear recording music hello david yes it's a bit awkward is right it proved to be a great breeding ground for what would define one of the most legendary decades of all time but one man in particular stood out a young american guitarist still unknown in his home country but making a great name for himself in england jimmy hendrix playing electrifying shows in clubs in london touring the country his flamboyant life sets were hard to miss for if you just anyone here and just what's the question a very simple question who's been the most influential guitarist of all time jimmy andrews guaranteed jimi hendrix for sure greatest guitarist of all time jimi hendrix most influential i studied him through uni i did dissertation on him i really absolutely love jimmy jimendrix why do you think he influenced so many people i believe because he was original guy and he didn't care about being somebody else than himself so in the year 67 the year of sergeant pepper jimmy played a show in london the famous knight at the civil theater so picture this in the audience you got eric clapton pete townsend the beatles all coming to see this new guitar god according to paul mccartney and on that stage he played a guitar a black fenner strat and that very strat would play in one of his most iconic shows of all time the 67 monterey pop festival that would mean his breakthrough in the united states for good crossing the road in england it's dangerous i think we've all seen the footage of him playing the guitar with his teeth the guitar behind his neck doing all sorts of crazy things so today i've got the immense honor and pleasure to not only walk around in this place not only visit one of the shops he might actually bought the guitar from but i'm going to share this right now but to actually play that very guitar you heard that right i'm about to play jimi hendrix actual guitar and thanks to 60 60 sounds for the hospitality let's this is the case let's go freak dad [Music] oh my god [Music] goosebumps shivers i'm not sure if i can carry the guitar and not drop it right now [Music] and then we plugged in for the first time in 53 years actually a few months ago and we plugged it in and it sounded just like the record if you listen to the montreal recording it's like you can't it's just the same freaking out of [Music] and what's it about that one is it's such it's such a lovely guitar even though it's just a standard factory off the shelf yes that's chosen by somebody who obviously knows what they're looking for they play guitar on their left i had to stop playing it only two or three minutes it's too much energy [Music] the grave on the neck and the arrowing it's pretty unusual you know at the curve of the body and the contours are just particularly nicely balanced i can't believe this this is the guitar he played at monterey this is the guitar and then his breakthrough and i'm i'm holding it i think it's time to plug it in let's see if it plays i'm shaking i'm not sure if i can play i can plug it in [Music] [Applause] [Music] it plays like a charm it's so light [Music] do you feel like people today could steal their lives from hendrix yeah absolutely because there's nobody come close to him so there's loads to learn there's nobody no matter how good they are and there's a lot of great guitar players but there's nobody close to that human element of his playing well because anyone who's picked off the guitar has has a hero guaranteed nine times out of ten their hero is jimi hendrix so it's just they learn true osmosis i think and he's just iconic you think of defender strat you think of i he was very natural very candid a universal influence cross-pollination of genre technique attitude in tune whatever is rocking and is it's physical it's sex it's everything [Music] i want to thank the owner of the guitar who actually invited me to come to this place he said he liked my videos which is just such a humbling fact just still can't fandom that he played this guitar on stage in monterey in the seventh year in london that he maybe recorded the records with this fairy guitar the sensation is just i don't know i've never experienced it before but i don't know if it's the guitar or it's just like story or the fact that jimi hendrix guitar but it's just there is something it's hard to put a price tag on such an iconic guitar but in 2015 john lennon's gibson the love me do guitar sold for a record 2.4 million in 2019 david kilmore's black strat sold for a record 3.9 million in 2020 kurt cobain's martin d18 sold for a record 6 million and estimations say that this guitar might bring up anything between 7 and 10 million fantastic watching all of you and playing it and i don't play guitar this is miles who arranged this whole ordeal and i was dying to learn some more about this very special guitar and how it got in my hands we wanted to give the opportunity for it to be seen in public again before it probably goes into a private collection uh and you know might not be played into public again so um and you were talking about les paul to come and play it with us that's honestly like one of my biggest achievements in life the one that excites me to start with was was the sample theater show that was um organized by epstein who was obviously the the beatles manager yeah jimmy played at this gig and i think that what i found amazing about it was that um it was within three days of the sergeant pepper's album being launched so paul mccartney and we know at least two or three the members of the band were in the audience and so you've got jimmy who's this relatively unknown kid from the states walks in with his slightly beaten up fender and this you know iconic albums released two days earlier and he plays sgt pepper back to paul mccartney like with all the flair that jimmy always had on this guitar and i think that that to me gives me goosebumps before you've even started and then obviously off the back of that uh the story goes that paul mccartney was blown away as was everybody else paul mccartney was a massive champion of jimmy to get him to play at the monterey festival the rest is history i mean it was an iconic gig and and you know him playing it with his teeth and i mean i think that show went in the books as one of the greatest absolutely shows ever yeah that's also fun because if you watch that video you can see him play with the teeth like this yeah and you would see exactly these absolutely these marks over there yeah um so the owner of this guitar um in order to sort of uh allow yourself and various people to play it we've strung it on as a right-handed uh instrument for now and the other thing was it was i don't know if it was broken as well so this this switch here um was was broken very delicately uh had it repaired in this shop uh recently so um as far as we were aware it hasn't been played up until the last six months since jimmy left it in his manager's office in 67-68 it was obviously one of his favorite guitars i mean at the montreal festival although um he famously set a guitar on fire it wasn't this one yeah so he would bring a guitar on at the end and use that as his sort of uh his test test buddy or whatever on the floor and set it on flames it didn't have squire in it yet back then right like it wasn't just one of his tools it was his instrument and i think that's what makes it such a special thing uh and you can see i mean it's been loved and and used and uh [Music] [Music] so what was it that made me stood out from the right the ability to create melodies at the same time with maintaining a pocket all at all at the same time just just with simplicity and elegance charismatic person as well and so i think just a flair that he carried with everything that he did he just made everything effortless and cool and accessible i think all that technique that he developed was because he was trying to get something out and he used the guitar as his voice [Music] passion is absolute unbridled passion it just comes it's a physical thing it's not just playing guitar it's not playing scales it's not playing you know the textbook stuff it's just a physical human natural thing that that is explosive firstly the expression that he did with the guitar with the extension of his body just yeah and i'm big into pedals as well so seeing what he was using back then was what he'd be doing now is crazy to think about but uh yeah jimmy recorded him apparently and like with the stones and like bob dylan and they all yeah this place stood about here um we got thrown out for being too loud the the officers next door said their stuff was like shaking desks [Music] [Applause] and then when everyone here in the room gave it their absolute best the sky opened up as if it was a sign by the heavens and the man himself gave us approval the warmth and the light from the sun felt as if a smile was touching our hearts and everyone felt a little bit of jimmy in the room all of this happened then two three years although even less because with this guitar as far as i know he only was using it for maybe two years two years such a young man because he was you know he died at 27 but when he was playing this guitar between 25 yes when he was playing this he comes across as so evolved would you rather have a painting on the wall or a guitar out there on the wall next [Music] no okay that was it thank you let's uh put it back [Music] [Laughter] wait seven million pounds or euros i can cut you a deal when the camera's off that's a 100 000 dollar whammy bar right there [Music] a bit salty you might get some msd in there [Music] all right [Music] uh [Music] [Music] you
