foreign that's kind of like Dark Souls maybe that means your character can roll around maybe you have to worry about a stamina bar or maybe big monsters just want to sit on you whatever it might be I like to find Souls legs that you probably haven't seen so that sounds interesting this is episode 20 of steam dumpster diving all right first up we have the demo for on guard this is a colorful swashbuckling comedy game where you use parries Dodges and the environment to defeat your enemies it might be pushing the definition of a Souls like just a bit but this looks so cool so let's check it out colorful game it's got a jump button it's got a Dodge button oh look at these dodges okay let's go you better watch out I've just been training no I never surrendered oh you can handle it I just killed a man uh use y before an attack hits the parody oh let's go see you next time okay I'm into this I'm just wall spot him did you see that that was cool you know in a way this is kind of like Sakura with like you have to drain multiple of their health bars and Perry kick crates on the dummy whoa hold on okay okay hold on I'm like sitting up right now this game has my attention uh if he's a red attack you must Dodge wow that reminds me of another game I think that's funny I'm gonna Dodge that yep Dodge okay Dodge Perry kick him again he does that one more time yo this game is rolling Souls like Souls like Souls like wait what is this you can pet the chicken oh whoops probably could have used that better I miss them all games with environmental stuff like that are so fun to me and that seems like the central mechanic here with the pairing and stuff kick what if I like just kick him they actually work pretty well you know playing this game is making me want to re-watch The Princess Bride okay you have to stun them first got it all right so stun and kick I love the colors of this game this game's cool oh we got bouncing hello nope that's another wall there you go okay wait wait see this ramp here check this out so I stun him and he's gonna go down the ramp see they tumble down that's interesting oh bucket wait I can throw a bucket hold on how's the bucket worked I just throw it oh it's so sad oh my gosh you can kick tables I wonder if you like wall spot a guy against a wall with the table all right let's use the table okay oh my God oh my God what the what are you doing holy holy get off wow this is so just fun to look at it's the fight choreography let's go that was fun that was tough too and that's the end of the demo cool before I finish there's an arena mode I'm gonna look at oh is that a cannon hold on hold on wait how do I how do I do the cannon okay check this out check this out holding a lantern can I be light so I take this throat at the fire that's neat oh we have a [ __ ] cauldron of food okay wait maybe I have to throw the bomb at the food there we go oh my God what was that wait was that The Cauldron I blew up it like fell down later dude how does this look so good it's like like some of this stuff looks so good it feels like it's scripted but like it's not it's all just like improv environmental stuff oh new enemy type [ __ ] it there we go oh my God the bucket is overpowered nice I did it all right that's the end of the demo now that was so much fun ma'am this is fantastic um I guess my only concern is if they'll be able to introduce like enough new environmental stuff and enemy types throughout the course of like a full-length game to keep it interesting but that Arena already introduced a lot of cool stuff so I bet they can visually stunning the fight choreography is so fun to look at the Perrys and the Dodges feel good all the environmental stuff just fantastic got nothing bad to say definitely definitely keep an eye on this one all right up next we have the demo for bad Boro ever imagine a Souls like set in an early 2000s cartoon world I can honestly say no I haven't but that sounds like it was literally made for me and looking at this game at a glance I would never have guessed it was a Soul's like it just doesn't look like one at all but if they're saying it's a Soul's like I'll take their word for it let's check it out I just got dropped out of a helicopter all right all right so I can punch I can aim my punch can block can Quick Step I can do this like little Crouch roll around thing and then also have a Dodge roll that is a very long Dodge roll hint punches become weaker if you keep punching non-stop after two punches wait for the yellow spark for regular damage wait for the red spark for extra damage okay so punching non-stop does that like I slow down and like it stops working so alternatively I just do two punches and then I see the Sparks okay this game needs music or something it feels so quiet pick up oh [ __ ] okay hold on oh thank you okay we have some environmental Shenanigans is that a banana peel you can sleep let's pick up these trash cans throw them that guy got hit with like a syringe and he's poisoned I think dude I'm so amused by the banana fuel why don't more games just have banana peels you can slip on I missed oh I just poisoned myself great great yeah let's continue that's a fun animation oh wait I think I just picked up my money that's probably like the blood stain for this game your phone is that for me hello someone hung up teleport may call inventory is this the bonfire all right we got kind of a cool healing system um healing costs 25 out of 100 energy and punching enemies gets energy back slip on this banana slip on it there you go he did it wait can I beat up the car what does that accomplish why am I doing this oh wait it's Fender key my whole can I take that let's go and explode crash you selling something potions actually I am but I don't think a guy like you can afford it oh is that right let me take a look uh yeah I cannot afford it oh my God I was dreaming just now of this strange yet powerful creature I have to find some creature for this guy you look like an NPC can I talk to you hey hey there pal name Sal here take this I found in one of the boxes it's no use to me all right so I got a horseshoe cufflink kick him away I equipped it onto my right hands it says to use it right bumper oh cool I have like a kick move now hello little girl what are you what are you doing ow hey mister watch where you're going to kick you in the Shins I have stepped into a war zone what do I do where I picked up something called speloso hold on that sounds like an explosive oh this game doesn't pause wow it really is a Souls like okay I need to leave I I have made a huge mistake I've made a huge mistake coming here I just wait did the big zombie just pick up a little zombie that's awesome dude this is like actually kind of hard what is that where are you throwing tires at me it's like a tired demon zombie oh my God oh big he's stunned ow ow oh my God oh wait they're hitting each other okay wait go zombies go go zombies go they got him funny ball cufflink dude that was like a legit fun encounter spike him into the ground oh it's gonna be like a volleyball Spike so I jump do I like attack okay maybe I can like either jump over guys or like catch one of the hopping guys midair that could be cool I was so doubtful with this game calling itself a Souls like but I'm starting to see it especially with this level structure it does kind of feel reminiscent I every time I go hitting trash bags I get poisoned by syringes that might be the uh the animal that guy was looking for are you chill I can't interact with you what do I do all right I'm back I think the dog is no longer bugged it was bugged before wait pick up oh wait maybe I have to carry the dog back to the guy okay oh he's back up oh [ __ ] oh no dude it's a really far walk and I ran past the zombies oh wait he's helping okay so I'm carrying the dog I hope he doesn't despawn he didn't okay cool yeah is this what you wanted man I got it okay can I borrow the dog sure uh thanks what the oh yeah I'm back baby wow can't believe you actually brought it to me I don't like this man you're good what did you do to the dog here take this you deserve it he gave me the potion oh wait this is like a key item transform into a mutant with increased movement speed attack speed and attack range last 10 seconds and costs 50 energy I guess let's just test it out oh [ __ ] okay that's kind of cool oh you guys look cool oh did that guy have a gun dude those aren't even zombies what is that oh my God so blow up the car there's no way dude there's no way the van's chasing me I'm dead all right let's see what if I can like stealth let's go stealth mode okay I think it actually didn't see me where do I go oh here's checkpoint oh thank God I just realized I think the phone as a bonfire is very clever because like you can hear it ringing in the distance so you know when you're getting close here's what I'm thinking I'm thinking we gotta kill some Mobsters oh he hit the back at me what hey man what if um what if instead of picking up a bat like this what if he's just used it as a weapon isn't that a crazy idea wait who are you afternoon sir you would have to be trying to get rid of these rocket launchers get rid of oh oh no sorry I need to get them back the order was returned box of Parts hey bud I think I found your package what package no way you found X weaponlord 72x you really save my shell hmm I know here you asked for them before just take it he just gave me a rocket launcher shoot an explosive rocket out of Target 50 energy come on I'm back at the mob hideout can I just like walk in the front door oh I can and some of this combat's really tough because they don't get stunned from you hitting them this feels too empty I don't like how empty this is I accidentally fired my missile launcher and of course I crash the game because why wouldn't it oh okay maybe that's why it crashed because the boss fight didn't trigger dude snipe well two guys with bats chase me ow laughs you got me the back of the head oh dude this is so hard this is so hard okay throw the bat oh no they keep spawning no no no no no no no no no dude no this boss okay in that case I'm just gonna ignore the bad guys okay never mind I can't ignore the bad guys because they there can be four oh this sucks great there's six come on come on come on come on come on oh my God I got it yes that was actually kind of insane that was a first boss by the way good God he gave me a um new cuff link send them Skyward what's this new move do oh it's an uppercut wait can I combine that with the volleyball hit it doesn't seem like I can unless like the timing's really really tight I'm just doing it wrong well I did it so good that I bugged them out so maybe you're not supposed to do it what are you dude I have no healing left come on yeah no that's not happening I'm just keeping the volleyball Spike on because he's tall it's kind of working oh bro oh my God I got him thank god dude the fact that he could like punch you while shooting and then also Dodge damn what the hell is this what did I just where am I oh my God a shortcut oh my God thank God you know there's not many games that can make me feel that like true sense of relief but you know this game this game is making me feel that it might be a little too many zombies for me dude there's like a whole mobster place is like an entire dungeon there's so many rooms there's so many guys all right we gotta take out The Gun Guys first that's that's the issue here gun guys are down I just throw a bunch of pull balls at them it seems like a fantastic time for the missile launcher all right missile launcher do not fail me come on all right listen it didn't fire instantly like I expected it would and then I tried to turn around and then it fired uh I can redeem myself there we go okay see I'm not complete okay all right that is like one request I have though it seems like there are no iframes after taking damage so you can get in a situation like that where like six enemies hit you all at the same time I kind of wish that wasn't a thing but I could have just you know not gotten hit so fair enough to check this out pool balls and they go in the holes that's the type of detail that makes me like your game yo what if this game is actually um too hard what if this game is actually just nuts and I can't do it dude like maybe if I had a gun maybe if I had a gun too this would be okay but I don't oh who are you are you the leader ah you finally showed up and what no pizza I lost it and what you wanna just sit down and talk about it I'm gonna crush the must out of you and feed the rest to the rats hell yeah okay he's throwing stuff back up bro yep good oh he grabbed me get out okay oh no oh what happened oh my God's a car oh we should oh this is so [ __ ] cool oh holy [ __ ] I'm not even a little bit mad oh my God that's that's so cool did you hear that music too hmm okay he's gonna pay attention to the way the car is oriented try to look at it from the side Maybe yeah I don't I don't know what to do about that move dude he just comboed me that was a true combo these three please no no dude what the [ __ ] man uh I had no healing left this is so this is so incredibly demanding please no dude this is one of the hardest bosses I've ever fought for one of these videos just straight up this is brutal oh my God I did it I did it oh boy what do I do what I do oh my God I don't even know how many tries took me demo ends I did it You know despite the crashes despite the weird difficulty spikes despite how the combat can feel kind of finicky and awkward at times this is something special this game has such an unbelievably strong sense of style and when it works it works I had a lot of fun with this game I know this doesn't look like a Souls like at a glance and I like to stretch the definition a lot but this is like actually a Souls like like straight up it just is and it was so under the radar too like I have seen no one talk about this game whatsoever I'd like really dig for this one I sincerely hope it gets more attention I hope the dev keeps working on it and if the dev happens to be watching I think you're making something really cool just keep going all right next up we have the demo for tantheus you alone must face seven demon Lords and their armies to save Humanity so I'll be honest nothing about this game's description or screenshots especially appeals to me but I think even the most unassuming games can be surprising or at the very least entertaining so let's check it out chose what you will become uh all right I'll be I'll be this guy with your home and grandfather both ashes you set off to the ancient ruins of BlackRock fueled by grief and the need to become stronger you begin training starving and on the brink of death you were found by an old family friend I gotta say these little these little scenes right here I'm actually really into this there's just a dragon that's just a trick all right I'm uh I'm in the game this is my guy also I can't move I just realized left stick is not working uh I literally can't move okay I rebooted the game I think it's working now my basic moves are light attack heavy attack and uh I can roll around uh where do I want to go oh my God jeez sure okay hell yeah let's go get up the fast walk when you're locked on you just walk I'm sorry here we go okay all right I think I do have a weapon I have Rusty katana wooden club or Quarter Staff and I have different fighting styles let's go with the standard one hand style okay let's see if I can figure out how these moves work so I think it's like I think it's like left trigger and then I hit the button cannot use okay what about this one wow okay about this one wait is it really that strong because I I appreciate what this game's going for with like the the special moves drop kick kick kick and him with a super punch I don't need a weapon it's better like this Jesus all right he got back up that's such an interesting bug I wonder how that happened all right here we go okay what is happening with the camera okay dodging is not working how much health back up again yeah something tells me I'm not gonna be able to beat this guy oh my God my frame rate what is happening yeah okay this is not gonna work also my favorite all right yeah uh I think I think I'm good I think I've seen enough you know this probably is not for me but that was undeniably entertaining and I seriously do hope the developer sticks with it next up we have the demo for radio the universe this is a very cool looking game that caught my attention almost immediately just from the screenshots alone now top down Zelda games do seem like the largest influence here but I did find it in the souls like section and the Creator themselves did list Dark Souls as one of the influences for this game on their Kickstarter speaking of which this game was kick-started all the way back in 2012 which means this game has been in development for at a minimum 11 years and almost certainly longer than that too so with all that in mind let's check it out oh all right here's my guy uh so I do have a little like jump Dash thing X to melee hold X heavy melee got it oh that's pretty cool oh [ __ ] evade okay oh my God oh this is cool yeah these these cutscene sections remind me a lot of uh signalus and how that game handles cutscenes just the Aesthetics of it all placing dolls by the way wait powder up enemies drop exp when killed with exactly zero HP okay so I did two there maybe the power hit interesting this game is making me do math on the Fly that's an interesting mechanic you have to kill them so they get to exactly zero huh oh I have like a gun now okay okay oh my God what are you doing all right let's try again foreign movement mechanic for a boss got it oh what are you doing what are you doing all right if I get next to you see I feel like this game slowly introducing the enemies but I bet it's just gonna get really chaotic they're gonna put like eight of these in one room all right here we go oh like you can bait it into hitting the other one there we go this is the end of the demo that was neat I think the best thing a demo can do is make me curious to see where the game goes and how the gameplay can evolve and I'd say this accomplishes that I can definitely see it expanding a fair bit from here so yeah no I hope hope the full game turns out great all right next up we have the demo for lies of P this is a bloodborne inspired Souls like where he plays a twinkified Pinocchio now arguably this game doesn't belong in this video as it's pretty high profile in terms of the marketing and press it's been getting but I really want to play this game I've got lots of comments of people want to hear my thoughts on this game if I don't include it in one of these videos then I like sharpened my blade on my arm that's sick you don't mind if I Circle strafe we all mind if I Parry I think I just parried that okay oh my God shortcut unlocked Souls like it's just like a boss encounter hey buddy what if I just like walk slowly okay all right here we go Harry Harry I'm [ __ ] that up so bad that's kicking my ass this feels like a fight I'm supposed to lose this guy has so much health I have one Health it's fine yep okay lie or die all right my money is on that was a scripted death oh [ __ ] was it not oh no oh [ __ ] it wasn't let me double check the Parry mechanic so if I time it correctly I think I don't lose any help yeah there are times periods it didn't like create an opening for repos but I didn't take any damage from that all right we're back is there like a blood stain yep what is the death ergo lost Ergo recovery there's always so many names for it all right Perry Perry the enemy's about to be groggy whole charge attack okay he's froggy okay okay so I guess an enemy being groggy is like you break their stance and maybe you need to do a charge attack to like fully break their sins at the end that's interesting I could be wrong but the vibe I'm getting right now is maybe dodging isn't super effective in this game this is more of like a timed Parry game I like these environment designs like it reminds me a lot of obviously bloodborne but also steel Rising which I played in the previous video it's just like notably higher Fidelity and like more detailed press a to repair Stargazer I'm guessing this is a bonfire that's neat you know Vitality Vigor capacity I can figure those out but motivity technique in advance are kind of interesting I'm pretty sure motivity is like strength technique is dexterity and advance I guess it's equivalent to like some sort of magic step I think oh I broke his weapon with a Perry does it deal less damage now that would be cool okay yeah see now that I'm out of uh hearing I'm like recharging it by hitting these guys now got it yeah so the blue bars are for weapon Arts but they're called Fable Arts so blade Fable is why guard plus Y is handle Fable all right I guess let's uh let's test out the three charge Fable art all right let's let's wait for opening and go all right nice okay cool damn that's satisfying this is tough though I have low health I'm out of healing like you gotta be not getting hit a lot it's not like bloodborne we can just carry around 20 healing items constantly it's a lot more deliberate than that and I like that I like the grinder used to repair weapon durability oh wait hold on so the bar in the bottom right oh okay huh so you have to actually monitor that constantly because I didn't kill that many enemies like it went down pretty quick we're uh we're at the circus hello are you guys friendly yeah nice try buddy hello there welcome to karate visitor I didn't think there were any stalkers left to fight the puppets yeah I guess I'll buy the other um I guess I'll buy the other items just to test them out all right uh definitely a boss I have no healing left but [ __ ] it let's go hell yeah I like that design all right parade Master let's go okay block okay [ __ ] him up okay oh Dodge that okay dodging is not feeling super reliable but maybe I'm just timing it wrong I'll probably just tell me wrong I think you have to time it earlier in this game all couple people saying this game was like way too hard or something but I don't know I think I think maybe they were just trying to play it to dodge heavy and you just kind of have to learn the timing with the Perrys the hotel's security excludes puppets like you what so you'll have to lie to get inside you're a special puppet after all oh your identity okay who are you oh God um I don't know I want to tell the truth I'm curious the hotel forbid it's all about please leave the premises okay is that it do I just have to do it again but lie this time okay sure whatever your Springs are reacting okay so like that First Choice was like kind of a false Choice it felt like but maybe there's more choices later on I guess that's the end or maybe it's not the end she's the one that was talking to me via the butterfly right I am I am you must have questions Geppetto will have answers but we have to find him first okay I like I like this lady you know every Soul's like has to have a a fire keeper girl you should take this Geppetto left it with me a legion arm that can release a wire it can be strung around an enemy to drag them toward you or move you toward them that sounds fun hello unexpected guests are welcome we don't insist on reservations this is so on the nose for me we have a old person in a wheelchair they own the hub area she is so gearman coded you know I think some developers underestimate the power of a hub area I'm glad these ones didn't all right let's try this uh puppet string thing okay that's cool all right let's try this guard Perry thing nope let's try again there we go okay that's cool I'm just kind of vibing I'm enjoying this like it just seems like a pretty well made Souls like with a lot of Polish some cool ideas I'll wait a second no cannot level up at the bonfire anymore all right listen you don't have to be exactly like bloodborne okay dude do we hold on do we even have talking to NPCs through Windows this is just [ __ ] bloodborne this must be here in the petrification disease quarantine Zone yeah see I like using the puppet string on that guy to avoid the guy on the right back ow let's just keep going all right I have no idea good electric coil stick head that sounds like a cool weapon go oh my God that does so much damage you've got a lot to answer for pedo did you do all this you know what caused the puppet friends he we go dude it's so close I have one health no what do I do this noise for sure damn it okay I like it I like the challenge this is like this is a solid level of challenge so far by the way this is like ringing a bell did any of you guys see there's this like one clip that got posted on Twitter and stuff I think it was this boss and they had like placeholder voice lines it was like a few months back you cunning rascal you won't get through here die but you know the voice acting has been pretty solid so far for the actual game okay my weapons breaking so I do have to actually heal it during combat oh all right we're gonna hit him with the slam attack Dodge and slam okay Geppetto oh I just killed a human finally we meet son I understand why some people despise me I invented the puppets after all did I get the Mad donkey outfit hell yeah hell yeah dude I'm surprised this demo did not end right there like it's still going that's nuts assemble weapons wait what oh wait that's cool okay so you can mix and match the blade with the handle because the handles have like different abilities than the blades so it changes the ability on the weapon as well as the scaling a bit I changed the handle on my weapon interesting okay the handle messes with the move set as well that's actually a really cool idea okay yeah so I think the handle determines the moveset of the whole weapon this combo seems pretty good though so I got like the electric I got the electric head with the the fast Rapier handle use a star fragment at the cracks calling next to the boss here to somebody Specter I think this is probably just an NPC I really like these designs accurate police officer all right oh there's my helper huh okay nice oh my weapon's broken wait I didn't even notice whoops I said why is my weapon keep bouncing off all right oh my God dude let me go got the Perry you know what it's controversial but I'll say it I'm having fun this game's fun okay that has to be the end how is that not the end of the demo be careful who you tell about this place especially if they're stalkers or Alchemists wait that's another bloodborne thing be wary of dangerous people always be a good boy to me huh okay that's the end finally I feel like I already said most of my thoughts while I was just playing the game but I definitely understand now why this has been getting so much attention as far as non-from soft souls-like experiences go this is easily one of the more polished ones I've seen lots of cool ideas I'm also personally just a huge fan of souls like that do weird things with the setting and story and you know a Pinocchio bloodborne inspired game is right up my alley it feels good decent level of challenge I think a lot of people are gonna like this I don't want to be too hasty though in saying this is like for sure gonna be a great game by any means because you don't know for sure with demos a lot of the appeal of these games does come down to the level design and while I liked what I saw from the demo I can't guarantee that like the whole game's gonna be good in that regard so you never know that being said I have a very good feeling about this game and I think it's probably gonna be pretty good I think most people will like this I think it does enough new things to hold my interest and um yeah they just nailed the fundamentals in like a very very strong way like everything feels good there's a nice balance between perfect pairing and having the Dodge you got the weapon abilities I'm into it I will be keeping a close eye on this and uh most likely playing this game when it launches next up we have rudra a tale of time this is a student project made by students at the University of Utah I've said this before but I always think it's super fun looking at student projects and this one sounds pretty interesting it's a Souls like based on Hindu scriptures let's check it out had taken rudra to the first era of the chaturyug cycle the satyaug a time of divinity got it okay oh we're just in all right I'm in I am ready look at that face and tell me he's not ready uh he will first encountered a p such an innocent Soul corrupted by try this first combo x y y oh interesting these are some cool little combos root Mantra unlocked lamb rudra can now trap enemies using root Mantra check out my root magic yeah okay so they're stuck oh look we have the uh the chakra thing on the right so you build up the blue bar of urja by just hitting enemies and that's like your magic meter wow there are a lot of guys uh hit him with oh my God what is that I'm gonna die oh there's two I'm so screwed just whale on them roll oh my God your time has not yet come Warrior reincarnate from last checkpoint I would like to reincarnate thank you the thing that's kind of tough about this combat system is most of your moves are like these extended combos that can be interrupted very easily if the enemies don't stagger properly solar plexus Mantra unlocked Ram all right go the time what was that untextured sphere I'm doing that again let's go wait I just realized something hold on I just realized all of the characters have that same texture like my Skin's gray why is that happening wait they're not supposed to be gray I can't believe I didn't know that until now I tried to fix it by messing with the settings didn't fix it uh yeah I don't know yeah like in these little video sections where it's like previewing the skills you can see the textures are correct like they have skin color and all that okay wait when they run away like that they turn into like purple and powered mode and I think they deal extra damage that's like another somewhat interesting idea like if you fail to finish off an enemy properly they get stronger orb attack go best move in the game you know I don't know if it's safe to have that kind of fire inside a tent you know I'm genuinely curious if they gave this to their teacher if the teacher could even get this far because this is like actually kind of tough all right here we go final boss okay what do you got oh dude all right round two dude his boss what is that what is that fair enough I would love to see the ending but I don't know if I could do this dude I think the music bugged out it's like overlapping and never stopping get back off freeze go in this can maybe work this can maybe work now there's little guys what yeah I can't handle this between this and the music I just I'm losing my mind I feel like I'm going insane freeze please why is the health not going down now what now that energy nice it's so endlessly entertaining to me that you can take the concept of a Soul's leg and just combine it with basically anything and it kind of works pretty janky and that funnel boss was insane to have to deal with but uh it's all good good job guys next up we have strayed lights this game claims to have cinematic fights based around colors I'm not sure exactly what the Soul's light component is but it does have the tag so let's check it out I'm crawling all right oh now I'm walking I'm like a baby run oh no oh oh no hold B to run faster okay Sprint Sprint baby Sprint okay I'm grown up now two oh run oh [ __ ] I've been infused with the power of different colors all right now we're playing the game here we go right bumper to period with enemy attacks got it left bumper to switch color you have to match the color okay so I can switch between blue and red interesting okay so I'm blocking blue all right block red huh so blue and then red Dodge corrupted attacks are they purple I knew it corruption is always purple this is your energy bar period mashing color to fill it okay left trigger to unleash energy uh okay I'm doing something I've gone late mode Dodge and Perry and then just like slowly fill up the bar okay this is like pretty straightforward foreign it's like a QT the light has shattered oh cool we got like a little skill tree I can unlock balance shock or blast blast sounds pretty cool I can leap forward and perform a powerful attack that interrupts and steals energy so first impressions this game like it's super simple press the Parry button and match the color and that's seems to be it so far oh here we go right trigger to attack attacks are weaker than Perrys okay so it seems like attacking is an option but like you could also get away with just pairing seems like this might be like a little Hub area hey what's up oh I'm sorry oh that's cool how they mimic you all right we're Partners now we're Team oh here we go two enemies at once now we're talking all right now that's starting to get a little trickier spider sorry don't panic as long as you don't run okay all right oh my God little buddy there's so many spiders oh he's entering demon mode hell yeah here we go ow gotcha nice try buddy oh [ __ ] come here oh man this is sick all right it's monkey time nice oh this is awesome I'm really enjoying this so far I think I'm just gonna keep playing on my own though and I'll get back to you after I finish straight lights is a beautiful Pleasant short little game the whole game is just a spectacle of colorful environments interesting Shadow creatures and a phenomenal soundtrack no surprise on the soundtrack by the way considering it was apparently composed by Austin wintry the same composer who did the music for Journey as a whole it's a pretty tight experience and I don't regret my time with it however I came away feeling kind of mixed the game is incredibly simple and plays its whole hand immediately you match the red and blue color of the enemy's attack period and you Dodge purple attacks that's the entire game it's also rather forgiving with me beating most bosses on my first try even though the game is very short me clocking in two and a half hours for everything the premise was wearing thin by the ends I think a color switching Sakura is a fun idea and helps create some beautiful moments but as a video game I was left feeling like this wasn't enough I kept hoping they'd build on this initial concept with new abilities or new colors or anything along those lines I do want to stress however that the boss fights themselves are still enjoyable despite the Simplicity because of how well everything is animated and telegraphed the way the music and visuals come together means that you're going to get that dopamine brush regardless how simple it is my other complaint is that the lead-ups to bosses quickly become monotonous with you needing to fight the same handful of enemies over and over and over each area has you running through what is essentially just a hallway as you fight a couple dozen enemies to reach the boss I get kind of annoyed whenever I feel like I'm playing filler content and that's what this felt like after the second area again it's not offensive in the grand scheme of things but when half of your two and a half hour game feels like filler it makes it tougher to look back on fondly I think I would have enjoyed this game more if it was an hour shorter with the fluff cut out or replaced with some sort of platforming mechanic instead lastly I was hoping the story could have picked up some of the slack that the combat left but it didn't for me you're a child of light on a mission to calm down other children of light who have become overwhelmed by Shadow and emotions given their similarities with wordless storytelling I kept hoping this game could reach me emotionally in a similar way to Journey but it never did all in all this makes it tough to recommend despite being overall okay and decently enjoyable part of this is due to the 25 price tag I'm fully aware most people don't want to spend that kind of money on a game this short personally I no issue with it some of my favorite gaming experiences have also been very short like a short hike or before your eyes but the reality is this puts the game in an awkward space where it has to really be something special for people to try it and I don't think this is quite there all that being said if you're okay with the price and are in the mood for a simple but pretty experience maybe check it out all right next up we have Bleak Faith forsaken this game was actually not on my radar at all prior to its release but apparently it was actually a game a lot of people were looking forward to and I gotta say from the screenshots alone this game has a very very distinctive look it looks impressive the only thing I personally heard unfortunately is like right at the launch of the game there was some controversy with them stealing assets from frumpsoft and like taking animations from from soft games apparently this was all done unintentionally because they purchased assets from the epic game store but they didn't realize that those assets that they bought weren't legit and it was someone just taking them so yeah it's an unfortunate situation and I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt the other big thing is that apparently this game was very buggy at launch which is why I chose to wait over a month to play it so I'm playing it now over a month past release and yeah you know let's just check it out here I am in some sort of area we got like a dragon flying off in the distance that's good all right so I have a basic light attack I can block can do a little Dash if I double tap it it's a roll and then pressing y looks like some sort of Perry I think okay look I thought this game had controller support hold question mark or question mark to access the quick wheel come from let us be quickly all right not supposed to fight that guy hello oh there's my body does rolly not have iframes I don't think it does look walking is just better than rolling all right okay he's bubbling awesome he just ragdolled me cool he just kills her the Shockwave all right I'm not supposed to fight this guy all right let's just let's move on you are joking you're joking why this is as fast as I can go there's no way to slide I'm gonna be patient with this game but this is just a very weird first impression so far let's all be chill let's all be chill here he just buried me okay dude this combat I I don't know I'm not loving the way this game feels so far so I've just been like wandering around I have genuinely no idea if I'm going the right way I think that's kind of neat that I'm totally lost maybe I guess we'll see oh we got another ladder yeah oh what is that what is that um yeah let's let's run let's run can it follow me in here okay I think it's stuck okay do I like should I fight it like this it's not even fighting back it's time for fighting back oh there it goes okay okay that was that was a cool attack what the [ __ ] just happened that's a really bold choice to go with a ragdolling after getting hit every time all right get in there I got him let's go that was so janky see the problem with ladders like this is that letting me be alone with my thoughts for too long all right I don't know what else to do so I'm just gonna try fighting this guy again trick is to just like back up out of range occasionally and don't actually try to dodge foreign oh my God I finally got him all right well I got the uh the last boss's weapon has a sword that's cool I just break the terrain okay after beating that boss I got perk Essence which I think lets me pick one of these perks every time I land a successful attack I have a chance of creating a clone let's do it what is that what is that thing it's moving with me okay what the [ __ ] oh my God it's my clone oh I'm so confused Yeah so basically if you want to avoid attacks you have to roll like two seconds before you think they're gonna attack you can't Dodge through attacks he just buried me why is that a thing yo what is that that's sick all right good good okay knock them over wait there's like a button prompt I'm climbing him get him yo it's like Dragon's Dogma okay I'm just mashing the attack button that was kind of cool is he dead oh he's not dead this is a weird mechanic I'm just National attack did I get him okay that was very odd I like the idea of that I wish there's like a little more to it rather than just like hitting one attack button you know as janky and weird as this can be I'm still kind of like intrigued by the fact that there's no direction whatsoever I'm completely lost I look up I just see this complete mess this nightmare uh like it's interesting it's interesting yeah I don't know I want to keep going oh what are you where's my clone doing all right we got we got that thing all right so here's my plan I'm gonna lure it over to this tunnel and then it's gonna get stuck and then it's actually not gonna get stuck and then I'm gonna run all right dude so the camera please please okay I got it why is like why are half the fights like that dude this is a nightmare it's just like the same pillar over and over it's all the same it just keeps repeating it just keeps repeating I think one of my biggest issues with this game is that at times it looks really cool but it's ultimately just these really gargantuan areas with so much empty space in between encounters and then when you get to set encounters you fight the same like one or two enemies for each Zone it's like one of those things where it's cooler to look at than to play foreign oh cool let's just fall through the elevator please oh awesome dude yo okay okay okay all right um um um oh here we go another boss finally wow oh man how far away is the checkpoint oh my God so far oh I don't know if it happened to me to to walk back to that okay here we go oh my God I swear to God what is the I hate this okay I just placed that down I think it functions as like a temporary checkpoint I'm not positive but I guess we'll find out dude what do I stand Here is this safe maybe this is a sixth spot okay okay I get it why was I in slow motion huh okay cool okay at least this mechanic cuts down on the run back like you can just place a checkpoint next to the boss oh this feels so bad this game is Just unpleasant and I fell through the elevator please and look at this guy look at the animation for the the bow and arrow they just look at it it's so scuffed yeah I've been playing for like about four hours and I think I'm done I'm just not I'm not having fun uh I'm back after like a week or two of not playing and while I stand by everything I said last time you know it didn't sit right with me to not play this game more I want to give it more of a fair shot all right so I put in an additional eight or so hours into Bleak faith I did not finish it but I'm pretty sure I saw roughly 80 of the game that was enough for me I'll be honest this was motivated by a handful of positive Steam Reviews that I saw and me wanting to better understand where these people might be coming from I can't say I fully understand still but I at least feel more confident in my own feelings let's start with the good and interesting things about this game as I discovered more areas I was continually struck by how beautiful the environments could be Far and Away these environments are the star of the show this is an impressive looking game and it's all the more impressive that it was made by a small team of three people some of the monsters I came across felt like they had inspired and varied designs too multiple times I would see something new interesting to myself that looks awesome On a related note while not always successful this game sometimes tapped into that sense of wonder and Discovery that's increasingly rare in games this is in large part due to how the game gives you no direction and is content to let you stumble around one of my most memorable moments while playing was seeing a giant skyworm I decided to try jumping onto it fully expecting to clip through its model but imagine my surprise eyes when I landed and got to ride it to a whole different area this was great and while his execution is debatable it's undeniably interesting that progression is almost entirely gear based with no traditional leveling all progress comes from finding equipment leveling it up and getting perk points from killing bosses and there are a few neat gameplay ideas like being able to periodically set your own checkpoints on the fly with all this in mind I do sort of understand some of the positive responses to this game I think a lot of people connect with these elements and feel it's just a matter of ironing out the bugs in Jank for to be a great game I understand where these people are coming from but I disagree the bugs are just one small part of this game's larger issues and the problems I have with it are so fundamental that I see it as entirely unrealistic of improving to a point where I'd want to try it again for games like this level design is so so important to the experience and I feel like Bleak Faith completely fails at it basically it felt like the focus of every area on the developers part was making the environments look cool from a distance and they do I was consistently wowed every time I found a new biome and got to just soak it in however it felt like not enough attention was given to the reality the player actually navigating these areas they're extremely big and extremely empty so much play time is dedicated to slowly traversing these empty or nearly empty zones only to have them broken up by the occasional enemy it's simply unpleasant to explore and unpleasant to play these areas are tedious enough to explore the first time around so try to imagine how painful it can be when you introduce the souls-like death mechanic of enemies that respawn and needing to repeat content between gigantic empty levels 1000 foot tall ladders and elevators that take a Solid 4 minutes to ride each way I was left feeling bored and like the developers didn't respect my time and God forbid if a bug was to blame for dying like falling through an elevator spending 10 minutes walking back really hits different when it truly isn't even your fault all this would be bad enough in a game with the best combat in the world but that's not what we got slow sluggish imprecise weightless these are the words that replayed in my head every time I got into a combat encounter fights outside of bosses are Mindless and ask almost nothing of you mashing attack is enough boss fights are the opposite and require you to play in a very slow and tedious way to make progress address every time I found a new boss I was filled with Dread at the prospect of needing to fight them as a reminder dodging gives you no iframes it feels like the slow pace of the character animations are sometimes at odds with enemy and boss attack animations that are quick and don't Telegraph properly Everything feels out of step with each other and I gotta say having your character Ragdoll from big hits is a very bold design choice in a game where you can get stuck or clip through the floor despite all of this there were still glimmers of what could be cool moments when encountering things like giant creatures but these were almost always undercut by either bugs or just janky and awkward design that made them unfun to engage with for example my excitement and wonder at seeing the samworm boss immediately evaporated into disappointment when I had to actually start fighting it the idea of climbing a monster sounds cool but the implementation is literally just hitting the attack button that's it I could go on but I feel like this portion of the video is already long enough for everyone had fun with this game I'm happy for you I'm envious I feel like I missed something but seeing people enjoy a game that other people worked hard on makes me happy however Bleak Faith really just seems like it's not for me and even though I don't see how it's possible for it to get to a state that would make me want to revisit it I wish the developers the best and hope it continues to improve next up we have the demo for tyrants realm now this game might sound familiar to some of you with good memories because I featured a game with the exact same name over two years ago that game was going for a PS1 era art style and was more of a proof of concept than anything else but it seems like since then that same team has decided to expand on that concept and turn it into a roguelike and this is now a whole different game I thought the original had a lot of charm so let's check it out wow this looks way different yo he's got the gamer posture looking good all right so we got light attack heavy attack roll and like a block oh give me your money like how he drops his coins like his Sonic oh uh yeah give me that Barrel chicken that's awesome you know honestly like potions are overrated we need to bring back the chicken oh nice try oh so there is a Perry If you time it correctly got it oh Crusader armor uh yeah that seems way better okay it has a special effect damages enemies when rolling forward that's right does not seem to be damaging him oh well I think this is in the level Merchants Lounge I can buy a dagger and that's it oh okay oh [ __ ] okay does he have other attacks yes he does okay scary in the dark oh my God we're good I like this music this is tough there's like so much end lag after even a light swing I think it's it's tough to find an opening like see I was still stuck in the swing ow ow my coins all right and it just resets okay that was neat I'm gonna try one more time okay yeah I think this time I'm gonna try to stick with this knife wow that damage is so bad though oh Commander's armor that defense is really high this is a powerful look hey I'm still rolling fine so [ __ ] it all right I'm armored up got a faster weapon and I got four chicken s good oh boy staggered him okay all right doing really good so far almost got him one more hit there we go didn't even need my chicken um is that the end oh we're still going oh I can buy the bear Killer's ax I mean it is way slower but that damage is tempting I can work with that Northern Caverns did he just eat a fish you know what that's like kind of fast actually So currently the only things you can find are different weapons different armor and chicken I think if you're going for a rogue like you need a more variety and B you need like the ability for there to be different builds between each run and just having different weapons and different armor I don't think that quite cuts it like it's kind of a bummer every time I open a chest it's stuff that like I just don't want you know like I'm not gonna take it because it's downgrade oh hell yeah oh I don't have to fight him what maybe I get the film later okay yeah give me a challenge elephants oh I gotta hit this okay wait this is neat hold on all right let me just knock this over all right it doesn't uh he's not doing much that's cool okay I like that what I would personally do is I wish like the spikes were a hazard constantly so I could like fight him while avoiding the spikes the entire time see like this too easy to avoid you know gotcha all right that's gotta be the end though right yeah okay we just loop back around so I think this is pretty neat but since it is looking to actually release this year into Early Access I'm gonna give a bit more feedback and maybe be a bit harsher than I'd usually be for something like this ultimately this is extremely Bare Bones like just the combat mechanics and the stuff you can find it's super super Bare Bones I am keeping in mind as a demo but like I still think this is pretty reflective of what the game's gonna be I think being Bare Bones can be okay for this genre but what it means is that the level design and other aspects of the game like exploration maybe they pick up the slack right but if you're going for an action roguelike suddenly the combat is pulling all of the weight and I'm just very skeptical that this combat can pull that kind of weight without overhauling some things and making those types of adjustments personally I wish this wasn't an action roguelike and instead was like a more focused linear experience like the original one was that I played a couple years ago but since that's not the case I think this is going to be a bit of a tougher sell I will keep an eye on it because I do really like the look of this game it's very Charming to me but it is Bare Bones in a genre that's pretty competitive hey thank you very very much for watching this is my longest video ever which believe it or not was not intentional just worked out that way in the editing process but I'm kind of happy about it since number 20 in this video series is a pretty big milestone so I think it's fitting as
