i want a house i bought a house i bought a house i bought a house which means i can now play this hello everybody i bought a house i bought a house i bought a house so lifelong dream of mine fulfilled i bought a house and today i'm going to be talking to you about the process i'm going to be showing you the house when the like the first morning after we moved in um our stuff hadn't arrived it was completely empty and yeah we're gonna do a little empty house tour and i'm gonna answer some questions that i assume will be asked a lot of in the future this is gonna kind of be the anchor video where i just tell the tale i have wanted to own my own home since i was a teenager it was one of the things i've been most excited about i just the idea of having my own place that i get to decorate and be calm in is bliss to me um but obviously just like everyone i just assumed that that would not be a thing until i was married and i had blah blah but then this year well there was a series of unfortunate events about two years ago i moved from ottawa in ontario to british columbia partly because of my dad's job but partly because we love british columbia my family has lived all over canada and um it was just a place we'd always wanted to go back to and live in so we moved to bc um we were all in a big house together and we were happy we were content bc is so beautiful it is such a gorgeous province the nature is unparalleled the people are awesome it is beautiful but it's also so expensive that i couldn't stay so one of the questions i know i'm gonna get is like why did you move to nova scotia because i could afford to live here this move was largely motivated by me being realistic and saying i want to buy a house that is a top priority for me for many different reasons which i'll go into and i can't afford to do it in bc and i can't afford to do it in ontario so what are my options saskatchewan pretty but i have no ties there manitoba cold you think of these different provinces that don't get as much attention as the cool vancouver and toronto ones and nova scotia was definitely on my radar i lived in nova scotia when i was six years old and i loved it and then again when i was 13 my family did a classic rv trip through the maritimes and again i thought it was so beautiful here and so i was like it's beautiful i've heard it's very friendly and it's cheap okay let's go so far it sounds just like you know ariel had a dream she wanted to move well i had a dream and i wanted to buy a house but i figured i'm going to do that in my own time and then i got evicted for no reason my landlord was like wow covet is making real estate hot right now i want to sell the house you guys live in and we were like okay but where will we go it's a pandemic it's impossible to find housing right now because as you've mentioned the market is crazy and he was like bye and we were like oh my god so it became this really horrible manic rush we didn't know where we were going to live we really couldn't afford to stay in british columbia like it would i don't want to talk about it it was so stressful so i started really looking into okay what is my solution so obviously the number one thing we could have done was just move into another rental there's nothing wrong with renting don't get me wrong don't misconstrue what i'm saying it's just that i have been renting and living with my family as we've all been renting for a decade now and we just don't want to do it anymore we miss homeownership and just for me stability wise i wanted my own place whether that was my own land whether that was my own van that i lived in whether that was my own house i didn't care just something that belonged to us so i started looking i started i got a mortgage broker i got a real estate agent i started looking around vancouver island and because the only things that i could afford were on tiny islands off of vancouver island that i needed my own boat to get to i was like the truth is that housing right now is crazy people my age are completely locked out of the market so i've got to get creative and no i'm not going to have the dream of buying like a nice starter home in a nice community it's not going to happen it just doesn't exist anymore so i've got to get creative and be okay with compromises so i was like sure i can learn how to drive a boat i thought it would be fun to actually look at some of these properties so this is when i actually had bookmarked it's 145 000 and it has about two acres and you can see it's just gorgeous the windows the nature it's beautiful but it's also so tiny it's off-grid i couldn't really imagine living with my boyfriend and my brother here the land is sloped which is really hard to build on it doesn't have water electricity wi-fi how do i work here this isn't really a full-time living situation for my life situation so this next one is also really beautiful 190 000 i mean this was unaffordable to me i i couldn't afford this um especially like maybe i would be willing to do 190 000 for something that i was very comfortable in had room for an office had room um to like feel sp stretched out in but like you can see this is a small cabin and it's beautiful and it's wonderful but 200 000 it just it feels unfair it feels unjust eventually logistically i decided that that wasn't the life i wanted to lead and i started looking into buying land i've always loved the idea of buying land building my own home that i designed for my particular wants and needs and if i bought land that was big enough or my family all bought land together we could build multiple homes on the land and like be together but in our own houses so we looked into that a lot so expensive literally at one point i was in contact with four different yurt companies because i was like that's it that's what i can afford i can afford to buy a yurt i will live in the europe for a few years while i save up money to build a house on land i was contacting tiny home people i was just trying everything i could think of and i was feeling so desperate i was feeling so scared about where i was going to live about where i was going to put my books like where i was going to work especially like i mentioned for me my home is also my workplace it's where i film it's where i edit it's where i write it's where i create and so all of these months i'm packing and i'm putting everything away and it's like my world is closing in around me and all i can think of night and day i couldn't sleep anymore i it was a very dark time so then one night i was on reddit of all places i was on reddit and someone was like nova scotia is the last cheap place in canada at this point i'd become so attuned to the british columbia real estate market that i was like wow maybe i could find a house in nova scotia that's like 200 000 if they mean if they're actually serious about it being cheap so i started looking around this area and i found homes for a hundred thousand and i was like literally shocked i didn't understand what was going on i was like is there something wrong with these homes or oh are they actually owned by the government oh are they like trying to figure out but no it's just cheaper here because less people live here because there isn't a vancouver or toronto et cetera et cetera et cetera like and none of those things matter to me i'm very lucky because i live i work from home so i don't care where i am as long as it's pretty and friendly and i like my house i don't care where i am so i started seriously looking into it and i found this house this house had been abandoned for a very long time no one had lived in it for a very long time there was no proof that the water worked that we found out that the electricity worked thankfully we knew that the heating didn't work um and my real estate agent over here was like i just don't think that that is gonna be a good house and i was like i just saw something in it i just was like no i think i think that this could be special and she was like okay let's do it and so i never visited this house before buying it she did a video tour for me i would be like can we look over there can we look under here and we did and i loved it and so i was like let's do it i wanna i wanna buy this house it was so sudden but the market because of covid was going so quickly that i was like you know what i think it's really cool and i'm just gonna go for it then begin some of the most stressful weeks ever of signing papers and hoping that a bank would give me a loan and oh my god you know i don't even want to think about it i don't want to think about it i did all the paperwork that you're supposed to do and did all the things and i was approved and i cried like crazy can you talk because after having moved as much as i have the idea of getting to own this place no matter how humble it is no matter how much work it needs to be done or it needs to have done it's mine it's my house i feel like crying again so the next step was to move out here and i am so excited to talk about having teamed up with amj who partly covered the cost of my move and i am so so grateful to them not only because they agreed to sponsor this video but also because they were incredible i was just obsessed with them so here is my move hello everybody today is moving day one i come to you with my chocolate milk that my dad just made me um today i'm teaming up with amj campbell to help with this move they are a moving company here in canada and they're going to be helping with this move and i'm so excited we have spent the last few weeks and especially yesterday getting our house all packed up organized ready to go and we're exhausted it is so hard to pack like this looks simple but it wasn't um and so the fact that today on the actual day that the stuff needs to get on the truck is going to be lifted by somebody else and sorted by somebody else is so unbelievably exciting so here we are when the truck is pulling up we were actually doing these vault systems which is really cool they get totally sealed and secured sent over and then you open them up and you can see that your stuff wasn't moved or changed amj put down carpets to protect our things they wrapped everything that might have been breakable or chippable or dentable and they id'd every single thing that we had so we had an inventory and when they were all done which was so fast our journey began so my brother and i were in my jeep my parents were in their car with the pets and off we went across canada so here we are crossing the rockies entering the flats in the prairies in saskatchewan i love the trains i love driving past trains in entering manitoba you can see it's starting to get hilly again and the nightmare snow of northern ontario and then you can see that our little car speeds up because i stopped filming because i was so tired i was just wanting to get home but then here we were on the other side after our two week quarantine amj showed up again they put down the carpets they let me open the seals so that i could see that stuff had never been disturbed never touched other people's stuff and they unloaded everything in literally an hour and 20 minutes okay the guys just left our house and i am so relieved and grateful for the entire experience i am so brand loyal like they have been so kind friendly helpful generous the entire time um it's just been such a wonderful experience they unloaded all of our stuff in under an hour and a half like it was so fast and just so professional hello max hello max max is happy to have her stuff back yes i feel so grateful for everything that happened and it's just been so so so wonderful and now we have all of our stuff and it's just nice that we can actually have places to sit thank you so much so much to amj for teaming up with me for this move it was so much better than i ever could have imagined and i cannot recommend them enough so then we had two weeks of quarantine where we actually all slept in this room my boyfriend is visiting his family for christmas and has been for a few weeks and so we had an air mattress in that corner where my parents were an air mattress in this corner where me and my brother were because we didn't have our stuff we couldn't go out to the shops to like buy a mattress or buy a bed we had so much work to do cleaning these rooms anyway before we even felt comfortable putting furniture or beds in there anyways so we just kind of camped out here for our quarantine and then once quarantine ended and we'd done a lot of cleaning we've slowly started to migrate into the other rooms and this is now my office saying that it feels fake like i cannot believe that i have my own place this is my desk that i got off of facebook marketplace and i'm just completely obsessed with it and so i thought i would film here just on the floor of this disgusting carpet that i want to tear up like today or tomorrow i bought a rug there's so much to do but what i want to do next is show you an empty house tour so the night that we got here we arrived at like 8 p.m we just unloaded a few things like blew up the air mattresses fell asleep and then the next morning before we started to really unpack anything i was like nobody do anything i want to film an empty house tour and so let's do that hello everybody and welcome to the voiceover so here we are coming up to the house and i'm just showing you how it's kind of falling apart it's a little bit rough but she needs some love um all over also this was filmed the day that the morning after we moved in so please mind all of our stuff but you can see we walk into this beautiful uh stairway and the ceiling's falling apart but look at these details the crown molding and everything is just so beautiful so the first room here on our right is the dining room um it's adorable everything is adorable in my eyes but you can see just the gorgeous details including this strange kitchen window i don't know why and then on the other side is this questionable decision about fake cardboard like wood paneling with very detailed wood trimming a lot of the decisions in this house i don't understand like in our next room the fully carpeted kitchen oh my god okay so the kitchen needs a lot of work obviously going to have to rip it all out and start over again but i think the bones of it are nice it's got a nice size um there's a little wall i want to bust out a bit here you can see this kind of edge on the left is unnecessary um the cabinetry is awful i'm just gonna rip it all away but it has this beautiful window and then all of my worries fade away and then we move into the living room alright so here we are in the living room with this intense orange carpet and the dark wood cardboard paneling strong look but you can see how many doors there are in this house another thing i'm gonna have to think about turn some into archways this door leads to another door like okay but here at the back is the bathroom i'm sure you're hearing the psychos grease crazy screamy thing because this is horrifying um we have since put down tar pollen like we cut out tarpaulin to fit perfectly into this shape which is a perfect temporary solution but yeah we're gonna have to gut it obviously it's it's no bueno hello um all right so then we come up the stairs to another door a lot of carpet and the first room on our right is this bathroom so this bathroom doesn't work as far as we're aware we're gonna keep trying to fiddle with it but you can see the carpet on the ground um i tried oh god it's just horrifying but i tried opening this there was no secrets unfortunately um but then across the hallway is the first bedroom so it's just an empty room here's another empty bedroom but like i was saying i'm just obsessed with these the light in these rooms the details in the rooms they feel really nice to be in um this is the third bedroom at the top and you can see this one has the closet door open all of the rooms have closets which is amazing [Music] so then as we move out back into the hallway you can see that they've closed off the stairs clearly they haven't been using upstairs they've closed it off i'm going to tear down those walls and put up a guard rail again to make it like a beautiful staircase but then we're at the secret door the horror room the the the the room where you go into and you don't come back out from so this is horrifying i pulled my phone out here to get my flashlight out um it's so dark it's so spooky like literal cobwebs floor falling apart i bailed because i was too scared to keep going on my own but the back there is actually really giant and so here we are back downstairs behind the kitchen behind the living room there's this giant extension on the house so we were just above it and they just never finished any of this so i've got all of this room to play with which is so interesting i really want to move the living room wall back a few feet as much as possible to just take advantage of this space redo the upstairs make some of this into like usable livable rooms um have a workshop back here so it's just there's so much potential there are other details that i haven't really shown in the tour i haven't shown much of the outside i actually own about two acres a little more than two acres here um so the outside is really cool there are little secret pockets around the house that are really interesting and i'm really excited to show you those as we go along i am so excited to be making content about fixing up this old house i feel like i'm living my hgtv dreams ever since i was 14 i would come home from high school and me and my mom at four o'clock would watch divine design did anyone ever watch you define design we would watch it and it was like proto hgtv and then like love it or list it came out property brothers and my favorite house hunters international um so we would watch all these house shows now i feel like i'm kind of living one and i'm so excited to make videos about it but i thought i would answer a few questions that i just think are probably going to come up number one how old am i i am 26 years old i turned 26 in september and i closed on this house in november so very much 26 years old how much was the house so this was something i went back and forth about i was like do i tell that's kind of a personal detail do i not but i i've decided that i do want to share the number just because i want to be very transparent about this i've already on my instagram been getting messages from people being like well clearly her parents helped or well clearly it's actually her parents that bought the house no it was me and i bought this house this falling apart house because this is what i could afford so in the end i bought this house for 65 dollars that's it it was sixty five thousand dollars that's why i moved to nova scotia because this is where i could afford to live i also hope that by sharing that number you understand that there are options out there like living in ontario it felt like my cheapest option was a 300 000 home and that was for like a small place saying exact same in british columbia if not a little bit more expensive the idea that i couldn't get a house anywhere for less than 300 a thousand dollars like i was just looking at cabins i was like yeah fine i'll just live in a cabin now that could be cute and they were all like 250 000 so just know that there are options the third question i know i'm gonna get a lot because i've already gotten it so much is what is the living arrangement like who is living in this house so it's me obviously and then my brother who i'm happy to have live here for as long as he wants i when i bought this house when i was looking at any house i was always looking for a house that had at least three bedrooms one for me one for my office and one for my brother i love my brother he's my best friend and i want him to live with me for as long as he wants to my parents currently live here which is great because i love my parents and i'm happy for them to live here as long as they want to but they are looking for a house of their own in this area in nova scotia so eventually they will move out but i don't know how long and i'm not really stressed about it and then finally my boyfriend is also going to live here but he's like i said visiting family for christmas right now um and then he'll come and we'll all have to quarantine again for two weeks and then we can live happily ever after the next question i think i'll probably get is where exactly in nova scotia do you live and i don't really want to say i'm sharing a lot about the house and you know the price and all these different things and i feel like if i reveal the town that i live in it will just give too much away and i don't want anyone to stalk me i'm excited to share this process but i also want to keep some privacy so i'm not planning on sharing what town i live in at least not right now which is kind of a shame because it's a great town and the final question i think i'll do for today is what is your order of wanting to do things like what are your priorities how much are you going to change the house etc what i really want to do is restore this house to its former glory not so much renovate it and change it to modern standards i think that so much of the charm of this house is these old details the crown molding the little rooms the mental pieces etc etc so my hope is to really do a restoration and a polishing i'm excited to like tear this crap away rediscover the wood floors underneath paint the rooms into i really wanted to do wallpaper but it turns out that wallpaper is really expensive as for the order of things i'm just tackling projects as the priorities arise so right now i'm in the middle of redoing my bedroom because then i can build my bed in there and then i can put my mattress on there and then finally just have my own room and then i think it's going to be probably the kitchen and then my office but i don't know just as as problems arise there's so many things to do i'm so excited to do all of them and i'm excited to film it and share it with you guys and share it on my instagram also there's certain little things like for example i needed to fix a door and i was like i'm not gonna make a whole video about fixing a door but i shared that on my instagram so plug for my instagram before i go i'll do one more plug and i will plug my patreon this experience is so exciting but also very expensive and so i am so grateful to my patrons who give me a reliable income every month that i am i am genuinely just turning around and using to fix this house and to make more house content if you're interested in supporting this process please please consider becoming a patron i love my patrons i do a lot of bonus content over there i do weekly voicemail messages where i leave you like a 10 to 20 minute long just voicemail where i'm talking to you about updates but i'm also going to be doing this uh video series over there called things i learned this month i'm learning a lot i'm learning a lot about home ownership and about fixing things so if you're interested in that kind of bonus content i really appreciate if you check it the whole thing out and become part of this this crazy adventure thank you so much for watching this video i hope that you're as excited as i am about all of the stuff that is to come with this house i think the first like major video you'll see will be right at the beginning of the new year and will be me completely redoing my bedroom so i hope you're excited for that and i will see you guys in my next video bye
