at e3 2013 we saw one of the most lopsided unveilings of next-generation consoles when both the ps4 and the Xbox one were first unveiled to the public in detail at the time the 360 had managed to match the PlayStation 3 which was massive for Microsoft considering how dominant the ps2 was the generation prior things would quickly change however when the Xbox one was revealed to be weaker than the ps4 cost $100 more and to come with a camera that had privacy concerns right out of the gate pair all of the hardware and priced efficiencies with some of the worst messaging to their customer base around things like DRM and used games possibly going away and Microsoft stumbles in the beginning that hurt them through the entire generation fortunately we have a product for people who aren't able to get some form of connectivity it's called Xbox 360 right so stick with 360 that's your message if you know well oh my gosh if you have zero access to the Internet that is an offline device and then seriously when I read the blogs and thought about who's really the most impact there was a person who said hey I'm on a nuclear sub right hand I don't even know what it means to be on a nuclear sub but I've got to imagine that it's not easy to get an internet connection probably Out playing called it emo well yeah but I mean hey I can't empathize right if I was on a sub I'd be disappointed yeah the person Don Mattrick just described didn't buy a 360 they just bought a PlayStation 4 we're equally focused on delivering what gamers want most without imposing restrictions or devaluing their ps4 purchases for instance PlayStation 4 won't impose any new restrictions on the use of people PlayStation 4 disk space games don't need to be connected online to play [Applause] or for any type of authentication if you enjoy playing single-player games offline ps4 won't require you to check in online periodically [Applause] the Xbox struggled for the next six years now being outsold more than two-to-one by the PlayStation 4 and while we all talk about how the games did not perform as well or how poor the launch really was that year one thing that isn't really talked about much is how the Xbox one is built and it's something I've been meaning to go over for a while now so I went ahead and ordered one and I figured while I'm at it we're already taking one apart I might as well order a Gamestop refurbished one just to see how it turns out I figured it'd be really interesting to take a look at what they do when they refurbish an original Xbox one I'll be curious if it's a first-party power adapter if the controller looks ok just overall its functionality these were $100 over the Black Friday Cyber Monday weekend so it already is at a pretty good price but of course this is the original Xbox from 2013 the Xbox one so let's see what gamestop sent us all right so first thing I see which is good is of course instructions because while I know what I'm doing here you probably know you're doing with the system like this if you're watching the channel there are parents moms dads brothers sisters whoever buys it for another person who may not have the knowledge to go with it may not know how to hook it up there might be little things like using the sync button on the controller and then on the side of the system trust me I dealt with this over the phone a lot at those different stores I would act as tech support quite a bit so moving over they did actually include some batteries some double-a batteries are in here and they're wrapped still so they are new double-a batteries I do see a first party power brick it looks like it's been handled quite a bit as it's kind of scratched here although I kind of put that more on Microsoft for some reason making the the power brick have a glassy part to it I don't know why any of these companies still use glossy plastic it is much better to go with like a matte finish like a matte black but this is a first party power brick so good news there oh and check this controller out this is this is different that's interesting it's kind of like that like a ghost style controller where it's solid here and then it becomes transparent at the top interesting it feels pretty good i if this is a reefer this is a refurbished one as little you gotta hear a little sticky on that right there right trigger these all press that might actually just be from sitting for a while for some reason I don't know if it's just from normal use for used controllers but for the Xbox one control or something I noticed is if it sits for a while and then you go to press it you may get some creaking that may go away over time though that's we'll see about that one we also have our HDMI cable of course and then our power cable to finish up for that power brick of course this is a all outside of the system so we have a large brick to kind of hide behind the entertainment system I I do like that a lot of these power bricks and stuff are built into the system's now I much prefer that rather than having a big box outside of it and there is our system you can kind of see maybe in the camera that it's it's got some scuff marks on the left side where it's glossy the glossy plastic just gets scratched so easily I betcha this was like a matte finish it would look I think much more normal but it is fairly scuffed on that left side so I took a quick look around the system and for the most part everything looks okay with the different ports there is some chipping here on the side of course the top like I said is all scratched up but the back is missing the warranty sticker so they were definitely inside of the system they popped it open they did something to it now refurbishment can mean a couple of different things when it comes to gamestop maybe the system needed a deep cleaning because it was so dirty they said you know what I'm gonna try to resell that thing send it out because they have to open it maybe there's an issue with the disk drive because it wasn't taking the disk in there's a lot of things that could have gone wrong here that they would have had to affixed I'm sure a few of them even were just the power brick and they didn't realize it until it got to refurbishment center and they tried it and realized that was the problem so be interesting to pop this open first though we're gonna go ahead and plug it in and just see it make sure everything works and all that just in case you maybe were someone who was thinking about a refurbished Xbox one for whatever reason from Gamestop the original one you can see what you get out of the box okay so it has powered up the controller was not synced to the system at all so I will have to sync that up very quickly it's is weird to me that they'll send these things out without syncing it up prior so it looks it looks it's in the startup phase where it'll ask you all kinds of questions getting you set up with an account all of that I do remember you had to go through and have like an online account and and that was a bit off-putting for people back in the day when the systems first came out especially if you weren't really online like that I guess with your game systems it definitely I think took some people by surprise but I will go through this I do want to make sure though just while we're starting this out real quick the mechanism itself will actually pull the disk in and it sounds okay because that's pretty easy to tell pretty much immediately so this all looks good right now seems to be reading the disk and here it's spinning up really well I think so far we're in good shape here the fan appears to be spinning I think I think at least for now it's good to go but again I am curious to see what happens when we open it up now the Xbox one was always a pain to open up at least for a lot of people it was because of course it's a Microsoft system so you have to open it up with tabs tabs hold the thing together like plastic tabs you have to kind of break free and just kind of push past one another as you open it up and then the front will kind of open and it is a whole thing just to get this thing going so we'll start with getting the sides off here we'll get this guy off they'll give us a quick look inside just to see how everything looks and from the side here it is not all dirty or anything so at least when they open it up they appear anyway to have cleaned it which is very much appreciated because I hate to open this thing see a bunch of dust and possibly bugs in here but this will give us our shot and starting to open it from this side with these clips and then we'll work our way around the back so you can immediately see how this pulls apart right there is one very large clip plastic clip right here and that's what holds this corner in after you remove this great this great also works to hold it all together so once this comes off you pop this one and now the back will start to become free as you kind of work your way down you know I hope when the the Xbox series X comes out I hope it's not all these tabs it probably will be my hope is that it's like a couple of screws on the bottom and that hole just lifts up and it's just a cover and then they'll probably like 8 billion torque screws in front of me so once you get all of these tabs and they're pretty large tabs you'll see this top part wants to lift up but there is a ribbon cable at the front here to connect that faceplate so as you lift this up you want to kind of get a good look at it it's kind of hard to see from here off to go around the front as I'm trying to film this a bit as we go but there is a cable plugged in here and you have to very carefully lift it kind of pull the cable out and then this whole part will come off now the faceplate will also pop off here where there are all these clips there are a bunch of clips inside but I would always kind of open it that way and just get to the ribbon cable on the side for that faceplate and then as you can see we're left with a very large metal shielding that has a ton of Torx screws all over the place now this is our Wi-Fi card right here if you are having issues with connections so if you're trying to connect to say like your router or even like I guess even your controllers although you might run through here but you can see the antenna coming off of here from this guy but generally if your wireless is not working in your Xbox one it's because of this guy right here and if I'm not mistaken I believe the s and the X have similar setups where they have a Wi-Fi card but this is usually what you look at first if you're having issues they're also the best part about this is it's very easy to get to I mean you do have to unclip it but these would have I guess been the first screws that I would have taken out at this point is for this guy and it actually plugs in so when I remove this it'll just kind of rock off of here and you can see it just pops off then you would take this you would put it to the side you would come in with a new one literally plug it in screw it in there plug this and 10 it back in it just it just clips on and then you would go ahead and test it few more things we have is a speaker cuz of course it has to make noise and this plugs in up here it's a very basic one of course you get like the beeps and the ding when you go to unpacked your disc and then on the front here we have our button board that turns it on of course then we have our here that kind of lights up that that little a little logo on the front and then of course we have a spot for our faceplate to plug in that has contacts that works with your touch so that when you touch it'll actually connect and work so I have a bunch t10 screws to open up and unscrew here but I have to say so far this doesn't look bad it looks very very clean I am now see when I start seeing this I get kind of curious what was actually wrong with it this screw right here looks like it's seen some damage a little stripped so they definitely went this far and if they did they actually took the time to clean it this much whatever refurbishment center they sent it to at least got the cleaning part right also while I'm unscrewing this because we're about to remove this this entire part here at the top one of the things that of course we all had issues with with the 360 was its failure rate right I mean the 360 would read ring like crazy right massive failure rate it was in all the news back then even Microsoft that events would take the Xbox out of the box you know the brand new Xbox 360 and it would red ring on stage or something I've we've heard those stories well I looked at the Xbox one when it was unveiled and then I got it and I looked and I said this feels like a a reaction to that an overreaction even this system has a lot of empty space and a massive fan and a massive heatsink for something that is less powerful than the ps4 yeah check this out wreck should I remove this and take a look inside look at how much empty free space there is in here I mean you can see just nothing here right this large fan very large heatsink underneath of it the fan that's one of the reasons it was it was fairly quietest because it used a larger fan and just so much room so much ventilation in this system and I just I looked at it I said that this feels like what they would have thought of doing after all those red ring issues so the good news is after unscrewing all that stuff the drive will come out it's just attached with a power and SATA cable on the back here has a plastic clip that basically just kind of helps it rest on one side and has screws that go through it just to stop vibration and kind of secure it the other part just kind of sits in the front and it'll be held in when you screw it all together there and I guess while we're here I can show you my most heated drive ever it is the Xbox one disk drive I do not I'd never like working on these things these are a real pain they will be very temperamental at times they won't pull the disk in correctly for some weird reason sometimes and other times they just won't read despite a new laser it was always a whole thing with them eventually we got to the point where we were able to repair them but I remember when it first came out it was one of the worst drives for me to have to work on I really did not like it in fact if you open it up here we would generally work on it from the bottom up like so we'd sit like this to work on it and it was just such an annoying thing and I can't really tell necessarily if they replace the drive they may have or if they replaced the laser but all the screws are in the correct spots and it looks very clean inside so wow this is kind of coming up here that could just be for a general wear overall as a sticky the stickiness adhesive kind of starts to wear on it and back to the system we do have our hard drive back here again look at how much space is just free here like it is there is so much ventilation an area that's just not used in here it's just a large I mean honestly a lot of it's just hollow like there's just not a lot of stuff going on here but we do have our 500 gigabyte hard drive here Western Digital blue and it is held in with some rubber feet to kind of stop as much vibration as possible as much noise essentially that it would make and this guy will just lift up by the way so we have this very large piece of plastic for the bottom and I'll just go over to the side we're building I still stack over here but then we have our very large fan that's attached to a large heatsink that is then clipped to the bottom where our ship our APU is now we do still have some more screws on the bottom we have some t tens here and here they actually support the different port so this would support the power port back here and then this would support the lone USB port on the side there and then we have some more T eights these screw through the bottom of the casing and then attach to the other side of that heat sink and of course you're going to see one of these staples of the X Box motherboard we're about to take a look at the X clamp for the Xbox one all right there we go to the motherboard lifts out again just more stuff to put that aside a whole nice chunk of metal there that the motherboard was sitting in you can see our motherboards pretty much completely free now we are gonna remove this heatsink and the fan but you could just see how large it is I mean this is once again the way I see it a very large overreaction by Microsoft when it comes to their system which the one thing I'll give him credit for I didn't really see a lot of these systems coming in for this being a problem now I'm not pointing to the fan but the APU underneath of it I really didn't have to do a lot of reball or reflow into it nope it was this chip they spend all this time over here cooling this guy down again the APU that where everything really goes on where thing happens but then we have our South Bridge over here and it has no cooling in fact from when I when I remember it appears that it's underneath of the disk drive almost like it uses the disk drive to help cool it down this was always the problem chip this South Bridge I always had to do so much stuff to it usually I would even replace it full-on because it is a ball grid array so it can also crack underneath and a lot of times refloating it wouldn't even fix it I have to replace the thing completely so that would usually turn into things like where you go to power it on and then it shuts off immediately that was almost always the chip that I had to not just like re a reflow and or just reball or even replace the whole thing there we go with the X clamp off usually I'll just use a pair of pliers to get a couple of these ends loose and then it'll just kind of rock itself off and pop off you don't really want to use a flathead screwdriver that people would use for a clamps you want to get a nice firm grip on either corner because if you're using a flathead to try to pry it up it might slip and just slash the entire motherboard don't do that use some nice like needlenose pliers or something you can get a grip on so doesn't go flying and you should be able to pop them up at each corner and then when you're ready to put it back on usually I would just bend these kind of up right and that way you can press it down press it down and it kind of just Springs down and that's the idea of the X clamp a lot of people did not like these but Microsoft actually had a clever idea with these X lamps and for the most part this wasn't necessarily the problem it was everything else around it specifically they're super cheap very flexible motherboard will say hey this motherboard is completely different it is very very thick so let me go ahead and pull our fan and heatsink and the one good thing here is it looks like they don't do anything to this that would be a Gamestop as it looks like it's still using the same thermal compound that Microsoft would have put in there and it is very dry so I guess I'll be replacing that with some mx4 but this is our heatsink it is massive in fact just to give you an idea let me go ahead and pop this fan off so here's our very large fan right here and then we have our very large heatsink this is this is quite large for the chip that they're really using and the idea here is to take the heat from this heatsink and shoot it straight up into the air think about what they're doing with the Xbox series X right now they've already done that where they expelled heat upwards that that is not necessarily new for Microsoft I think they had a very good idea here with the Xbox one and if you had an Xbox one let me know if it was quieter than your ps4 or ps4 Pro because odds are that it was Microsoft spent an enormous amount of time I think anyway making sure this thing would not fail on the CPU GPU side so the APU right here now where they did run into problems was that they got caught off guard by Sony so all around this chip are a ton of memory modules enough to add up to eight gigabytes of memory which sounds like a lot in 2013 for a game console considering we were coming from 512 megabytes you immediately jump up to 8 gigabytes right well the problem with Microsoft is that they used ddr3 whereas Sony shows up with gddr5 caching Microsoft off guard completely much higher memory bandwidth for that but Microsoft did include 32 megabytes of high-speed memory directly on the chip but it was not as easy to develop for for like the ps4 because that just had one massive Lane where as developers had talked about several times they had to decide what went in that fast RAM and it isn't new to the Xbox family as the 360 system had 10 megabytes of high-speed memory on its GPU but it was much different here compared to against the ps3 the ps4 had a massive advantage and that's why you saw a lot of games come out at the time that were 1080p on the PlayStation 4 but then you turn around and they are 900p on the Xbox one sometimes even less now the Xbox one did have a higher clock speed for its CPU but overall I look at this system it was weaker yes but definitely I think anyway better built inside than the PlayStation 4 or even the ps4 Pro the ps4 Pro most people will tell me sounds like a jet engine and they're not incorrect it is very loud but people also laugh at the Xbox one because it's so weak and technically it is but I also have to look back and say you know what Microsoft turned it around big time from the build quality standpoint where they were terrible with the 360 all that system is so bad in terms of build quality but they turned it around massively for the Xbox one and then the Xbox 1s and now the Xbox one X the X Box 1 X currently is the best built home console flatout it just is it is high quality inside and looking at the Xbox one I do see a shift going from generation with a 360 to now because keep in mind this very old setup by the way is still in the same generation as that Xbox one X so I'm very hopeful for the Xbox series exponet comes out and I expect good quality from that as well mostly because it'll probably a premium asking price we were talking about 500 and plan B 6 under at this point but also because of the big turnaround they had going from the 360 generation to the Xbox one generation and I expect that quality to continue going in to the next generation systems and I guess looking at this to be honest this was a pretty good refurbished system from Gamestop I really don't have a lot of complaints looking around I mean I'm sure maybe hard drive health if this thing is still the same original hard drive which I'm gonna assume that it is it's it's pretty old then right it's 5 to 6 years old at this point so that might be a concern but even like the disk drive is solid inside it's there's barely a speck of dust just the casing on the outside getting chipped up and scuffed up as you'd assume so the Xbox one build quality you know follows through even into game stop so good job the GameStop although as I've shown you here the Xbox one was actually built kind of like a tank kind of like the original Xbox now I think about it so while this original Xbox model looked pretty good inside I really don't recommend buying this type of Xbox one currently at this time it is severely outdated and with the Xbox 1s being low in price brand-new even I'm not sure why someone would buy the old VCR model the s is capable of 4k blu-ray and streaming playback as well as being HDR ready Microsoft also managed to eliminate that terrible power brick and instead built a higher quality smaller power supply into the system I'm more or less view the Xbox one from 2013 as a wake-up call for Microsoft similar to how Sony received a wake-up call from the ps3s launch no matter how good your last generation system is if you try to pull a fast one on consumers they will let you know it's not going to fly Microsoft has spent the last 6 years trying to make it up to their consumers and have slowly morphed into the most consumer friendly first party company right now out of the big 3 things like backwards compatibility and migrating existing purchases over along with their game past service have made games more and more accessible they've even taken a stance that their own game should be in as many places as possible and they're taking action with that stance moving games like Ori and cuphead even to the switch now Microsoft is set up to make a serious run at next generation with the Xbox Series X already being unveiled to the public and at least for now it appears that things will be much different than that fateful morning on June 10th 2013 [Music]
