I asked perhaps the world's best known negotiator Chris Foss for his worst negotiation mistakes and he shared something I didn't expect he said that getting angry and making demands that won't work this is surprising it goes against the typical Hollywood stereotype for instance but he had a study to back it up he shared a study by Nicholas gagan in the study gagan asked fellow bus commuters for some change to take the bus initially he made a standard demand he said can I have some change to take the bus only 10% to fellow commuters gave him any change and then gagan took on Chris's advice he softened his ask he said can I have some change to take the bus but you're free to refuse now 48% of fellow commuters agreed to give him change softening the ask made people five times more likely to agree demanding that your boss gives you a pay rise that probably won't work but saying that they're free to refuse well that might help
