we have two cars that you have been asking for us to compare and i love the the exact specifications that we have for both of them because they're both one down from the top hey do you want more automotive content maybe some car talk in your ears for a workout or maybe you enjoy driving cars while listening to people talk about cars well check out the out-of-spec podcast we have it on video form on youtube of course but we're also on podcast platforms to listen to in case you can't have a screen in front of your face so check it out out of spec podcast available everywhere now back to whatever you were doing the ionic 5 is the big battery about 77 kilowatt hour uh sel all-wheel drive so the sel is one down from the limited it means you don't get the glass roof you don't get the big sound system but it does mean it's the one most dealers are stocking so it's gonna be the one you're gonna be most often finding and then the id4 is the pro s but it's not the pro s with gradient so it doesn't have the big wheels it doesn't have the chrome on the outside and a few other things so these are actually i would say like the volume models if you will and in terms of price let's just get that right off the bat this is 49 grand this is 52 grand they both qualify for the 7 500 federal tax credit they both come with three years of i believe 30 minute charging on electrify america volkswagen used to be unlimited but i think it's now 30 minutes they redid their contract could be wrong either way free charging just unplug plug it back in that's what i would do uh anyway which one should you buy well that's what we should evaluate first off what's important to you in this video may not be what's important to me this is a precursor to our massive suv comparison that we'll be shooting again last year we shot a two and a half hour longer so giant electric suv comparison but we only had four contenders this year there's so many more on the market this car ev6 we're going to have xc40 recharge in there it's going to be huge so comment below with the areas that you're interested in and then of course we'll make sure we compare everyone against everyone in what you're thinking about so let's go around the ionic five i'll tell you a little bit about it again 52 000 for this one it's pretty hard to find dealers selling these at sticker there are a few out there um this is my friend zach's car he bought it i think five over right zach five over sticker for this one it's in cyber gray wonderful color too by the way i might add styling wise this thing just looks like the future it is really really really cool you have all these pixel designs everywhere i have a full review on the ioniq five and there'll be plenty more videos and tests coming but uh hugely awesome styling uh right here in this car in terms of front trunks since we're up here both of them have pretty much unusable space up front the id4 literally has nothing and this has about something that's a good enough for your extension cord so we're not even going to open the hoods and just pretend there's no storage up there but this does have a little compartment if that matters continuing around the ionic 5 no glass roof in mid-spec which i think is this car's biggest issue if you want to get the glass roof you got to get the limited which is like 55 g's for an all-wheel drive and that's just too much money i think for honestly spending for the glasser if you think you had a sound system and some other things some different wheels i don't know this looks pretty good to me i think this is the volume model door handles pretty interesting both cars have an interesting take on door handles i like these quite a bit they open really nicely they're sort of ribbed in the back here so you can get a good grip on it overall a nice door handle design looks good in terms of space and sizing they're both about the same size but the ionic five is significantly lower it has a little bit less ground clearance and it's also a lower roof line than the id4 also i'm not seeing any way that you could put a roof rack or rails on this zach do you know if you can yeah not yet so but you can see with the id4 it actually has the roof rails and you can get the factory volkswagen id accessories which is pretty cool let me jump in the back seat here if you come around you can take a look the front seats really far back and i have tons of room in this car this is this car's biggest strong point really nice air vent really good head room overall it's nice look this car is so new there's actually still plastic on the inside love that my friend zach just bought it only has like 200 miles on it right now this thing is sweet so great back seat room the other huge advantage and i would say really the only advantage on paper with this car not only but like it's major like make or break buying decision is what's going on back here this is of course your j1772 and ccs combo connector and there you go and the best part about this car is one you can see exactly how charged you are we're about 75 state of charge or so and you can also charge this car incredibly quickly so i have reviewed the volkswagen id4 before and i've done a full dc fast charging test on this car and i noted that it has a pretty good charging curve and charging rates 125 kilowatts on this car and it holds it until about 50 percent or 45 percent and then it just kind of trickles down and that was really good that is the present this is the future this car is built on hyundai and kia's 800 volt electric global modular platform egmp and what this means is this chassis is just a charging monster anything on this is just insane so not only because it's 800 volt but also because they're just crazy engineers over in south korea this thing can charge at 235 kilowatts that's just truly insane and not only can it do that it can hold that for so long it actually gets itself overheated before it could take advantage of its theoretical peak curve depending on when you start so pretty much you plug this thing in and it's just going to smoke the id for it your your charging times might actually reduce by 50 percent that is insane so you know right off the bat i think you can answer your question if you're interested in taking a lot of long road trips you know and you're constantly dc fast charging or you don't have home charging well it's no com no comparison here this is going to literally save you time and that is a big big big advantage i also like the idea of faster charging evs because there's more throughput at stations because they're not sitting there all the time let me show you inside the trunk here wonderful rear end styling by the way you guys have seen ionic 5 in many of our videos it's absolutely wonderful nice underfloor situation going on here nothing super deep but it looks pretty good overall nice space seats fold down nothing really to complain about both cars are going to be near's makes no difference as practical as one or another let me show you around the id4 now by the way in terms of range on both of them uh we will do a range test actually i don't think i've ranged tested in all-wheel drive id for before so we haven't range tested either at this moment but this is rated 256 or 258 miles in the epa cycle this is rated at 240 miles but interestingly this is where the big question comes the id4 loses about 10 miles of epa range going from its rear wheel drive configuration to its all-wheel drive configuration that's because you got to put a whole nother front motor on this thing it carries the weight it's also a little bit of drag things like that that makes sense 10 miles okay cool the ionic this thing is a 303 mile epa car in rear wheel drive form and then they put the front motor on there and not only did they put the front motor on this car they also disconnect it while it's driving physically with a clutch system so if you're driving in normal mode under light throttle it's actually rear-wheel drive only and if you put it in eco mode it locks itself into rear wheel drive only and that's because it's a permanent magnet motor you can't actually shut them off and this car loses like 50 miles of range getting all-wheel drive i can't figure out why because you're just disconnecting the front motor it's just a little bit of weight so we need to run a rear wheel drive ionic 5 next to an all-wheel drive i think they're going to go roughly the same distance and i think the epa cycle's just kind of wonky about it but this is just my guess interestingly the id4 does not disconnect the front motor because it uses an asynchronous sort of sri motor up front an induction motor and that means it can actually kind of just shut itself off and freewheel and it doesn't create a electrical field which is pretty nice styling wise here on the id4 love it i've always loved this car i've always said it's the happiest car on sale and i still think that stands i just drove this car after spending the morning with the ioniq five thinking that this is just the best thing on the planet absolutely loving the ionic five then i got into this i'm like oh the germans do know how to build a good car and it is just a great place to be i kind of like that it's a little chunkier it's a little taller it has more ground clearance it's more of an suv style and you know it's no secret i'm an id4 kind of guy it's soft and supple and comfortable but like when you do drive it fast it's really great handling dynamics i could say the same about the ionic five and when we drive them we'll talk about some of those differences because overall the ionic 5 is just a tad sharper it has a much better braking system down the side i'll show you the back seat room here in the id4 looks like we have some accessory floor mats and things there's this bag i'll lift that up nice headroom leg room everything is pretty good the one thing that the hyundai excels in in the back seat is in air vents the id4 vents are down there and they never reach your face and and we've had these you know just in enough situations where we know that um so the ionic five air vent on the side better for dogs better for people also this one being cheaper by quite a few thousand dollars and getting the glass roof well that's just a win i think the packaging for the for the ioniq five the guys who did the product ordering guides for the us i think they messed up by not offering the glass roof as a standalone option on the lower trims and uh that's really to me the big draw to get the maxed out one trunk space quick trunk plenty of room look you can go numbers versus numbers all this stuff both have about the same both seats fold down both have some amount of underfloor storage it's near as makes no difference so i think what it comes down to and it's similar to our mustang maki versus ionic 5. both cars in terms of getting you to work your daily life your shopping they're both going to do roughly the same thing and honestly if you don't take a lot of road trips and you value maybe a little bit better value in terms of features and equipment and massaging seats over some of the tech and nerdy ev stuff that's in this car perhaps the id4 wins out in that area and that might be the case it could just be the type of person that you are but i will say my friend zach who bought this ionic 5 was actually on the list waiting for his volkswagen 94 and couldn't get one and then the hyundai dealer just happened to have two ioniq five sitting on the lot that he could walk in and buy so maybe this decision for you comes to availability what do you say we drive the id4 first then we jump in the ionic five and share our impressions if it's better or worse what do you think jordan sounds good let's do it all right are we ready folks let's do it ready zach welcome to youtube hey man it's good to be here so we're gonna drive around in comfort mode because it's an id forward it should be a comfortable car um let's try traction control because we're on snow right now just going to floor it let's see what kind of noises it makes ready almost no noise it just was like blinking oh we're good uh jordan you and i recently took uh id4s out rally racing more or less yeah and we had some some baja prep cars and some other cool things like that rebel rally car and those things took a beating yeah we didn't break one we did not but um so look this is the thing i love about the id4 the seat goes right down to the floor i have such a good riding position i have this beautiful glass roof overhead which i can actually close with a touch of a button which is so nice so it's just everything's where i kind of want it to be it's very german it might be because i've spent so much time in here but i just love this overall cabin it really is the right size it's extremely quiet i can put on the seat massage and i'm just cruising and the big question to me is when you drive the ionic 5 or buy the ioniq 5 a lot of it's based off of it's just futuristic numbers it's 800 volt technology it's powertrain systems it's thermal systems it's the way that it can charge at such an incredible high rate and does any of that matter if you're just driving around town like we are here the answer is not really i have to say um remarkably the id4 and the ionic five are the two most similar cars i think i've ever reviewed because they both are designed for the same person they both accomplish the same thing take a look at this i can go mode here and then into traction this forces the front motor to stay engaged and then it basically can just walk itself up this kind of off-roady hill and it just doesn't care it loves this stuff it's so competent at everything it does here's a great little snow path we'll try that traction control in traction mode here ready look at that just struggling and just finding traction where it can go now we took this car on a hill climb challenge for our over landing channel it didn't do very well so it's not great at hardcore off-road but i would say the all-wheel drive systems tuned really well for the snow in terms of driver assistance there is some difference between the cars so the hyundai i the hyundai what am i trying to say the hyundai that's really the road tripper in my opinion because it has amazing driver assistance now i recently tested that car and was using lane centering and adaptive cruise control and it really just did a great job of staying in its lane but not only can it stay in its lane it can also make lane changes i believe on scl and limited you get highway driving or hyundai driver assistant 2 hda2 and that will make lane changes for you the id4 stays in its lane with what's it called again travel assist thank you volkswagen and uh you can see it's kind of just doing its thing by itself right now and it has a capacitive steering wheel so it knows if i'm touching it or not and yeah it's great i mean what more could you need so on a road trip i'd say they're pretty comparable both cars have their systems i've driven id4 across the country a couple times and it's been absolutely flawless take a look at this view off in the distance it just doesn't get more beautiful than that living here in colorado we are so lucky of course and you know at the end of the day the id4 is sort of the car that i've been recommending to everyone who comes to me and they're just interested in the car hey kyle i have a commute to work i have a house or i have home charging or you know workplace charging something like this and you just need to get around well this is like the least intrusive way to just get around the car is competent really good at what it does it charges reasonably well it's dc fast charging times are not bad and it's just like yeah this is just the car in terms of value especially the rear wheel drive we're talking 40 000 for a big battery 75 ish kilowatt hour battery pack really nice here's a problem with this car though even if i go into sport mode take a look at this power meter you can see how it's limited here it gets worse in cold weather so if you're not fully charged you don't get full power so it's still fast and competent look at this thing accelerating straight up a hill it's still fine but unless you charge it above 85 90 you don't get max power and the problem is volkswagen recommends that you charge this car to 80 every day so basically they're saying buy the car and you'll never get the advertised power which to me just seems crazy now we've never done actual instrumented testing on this power display to see if it's more or less something that is visual or more like real world numbers related but we certainly will and we'll be doing that soon probably on this exact car even with the power limitation below 80 it's fast i mean zach what do you think of the back seats fast yeah it feels good doesn't it i'm a big guy i fit plenty well back here so to me this if i was just driving around town i don't know if there's a better car for me there is one issue with the id4 uh which is its lack of one pedal driving and a lack of auto hold for the u.s market the european cars get it and also um there's a noise the brakes make every single time you come to a stop in id force and everyone i've ever tested let me see if i can demonstrate this for you just stopping normally watch it didn't do it hold on hear this also has drum brakes drum in the rear yep which seems a little weird in 2021 yeah the drum brakes don't bother me too much because they're good for periods of unuse and i've never really had like it's not really a performance car but yeah i mean why why does that have drum brakes you know just cost even the id buzz will have drum brakes and the id3 does too it's just volkswagen's thing and so whatever the front brakes do most of the work anyway but i don't like that noise every time you're like maneuvering around a parking lot and so it's not a perfect car um the lack of one pedal driving really sucks and the lack of um what am i trying to say regen eye pedal like that thing one pedal driving nah that kind of sucks so let's jump in the ionic five i do want to say though that the volkswagen should be getting some updates both cars notably don't have plug and charge at electrify america so you can't walk up and plug in either you both need to use an app they are just like the most similar cars to compare ever i would say so let's jump in that one and uh yeah we'll we'll redo this thing in that car in the ionic 5 now you actually need to use a start button just getting in and putting it in gear doesn't turn it on which you would think it should actually do you know if it doesn't hold on no it doesn't off right now yeah you got to hit the start button well that just seems like an extra unnecessary step for an electric car with the id4 you do not have to do that here we are backing out great turning radius on both of these cars i have to say jordan what do you think of the cabin getting in here first of all i feel like the car is less of an suv but relative to the cabin i'm sitting on top of it what do you think yeah i feel like this is a hatchback feel even though it's about the same size i think it is a hatchback but they just call it an suv yeah yeah cuv yeah let's try i'm going to put in an ipedal let's just try its traction control see if it makes any weird noises no one's coming right nope flooring it much more of an aggressive trying to get the power down but it seemed to handle that wonderfully so the seats are really good in this thing yeah really good nice thigh bolstering nice back bolstering great steering wheel definitely feels arguably a little bit more nimble even just going around the first corner it feels lighter on its feet let me just try the brake pedal blending the thing with the id4 is it's got a really soft and long brake pedal that doesn't give you confident braking this car really good braking and that is just break by wire but very nicely tuned wonderfully tuned braking system and overall yeah just just a nice place to be as well i think driving around town the id4 to me kind of fix what i'm looking for sitting low in the car i can get a great seating position you know i'm kind of down low i'm not a huge fan of this bezel situation going on here and so cabin design even though i'm not a fan of what's going on above in the id4 this just seems to work better for me but i don't think it would bother me either day either way just like the id4 puts more of a smile on my face it's a little bit happier what do you think jordan i think this is happier you think this is happier no that's good i'm glad you disagree um let's see how this climbs up the little hill now there's a couple different drive modes here there's eco normal and sport in sport mode it keeps the front wheels locked on yeah [Laughter] so if you hold the drive mode down then it goes to snow and it turns off eye pedal but regens back to max so now we're in snow mode which should in theory keep the front wheel connected the id4 is i think softer than this almost on this i don't know i don't know yeah that felt pretty good too and of course it walks itself up there no issue let's try its slipperiness setting i'm just going to go wide open throttle interesting you feel how delayed the throttle ramp in was there and that was good programming to just get you going in sort of a slippery situation let's go back to its normal drive mode setting here um off we go then we'll try some of the acceleration and everyone holding on this feels faster far faster than the id4 but like i think you'd only feel that difference if you got out of one and into the other what's your impression i love this so you're really into this really okay well explain and talk because right now i'm feeling like if i was gonna drive something every day i'd prefer to be in the id4 why do you prefer to be the islander i think i like the overall just lower down hatchback feel to me the id4 just feels too tall yeah and i get why people would like that but i'm also the weird buyer who wouldn't ever buy a cub because i don't this is the least suv feeling suv yeah this this gives me more wagon vibes which i love yeah um i also love that it can do active steering aside from adaptive cruise control the the driver assistance technology take a look at this beautiful view again up this way the driver assistance technology in the ionic 5 is superior to id4 by far i would say it's very competent does its thing it even has a something called lane scooching which is if you're coming next to a big truck it'll push you to the other side of the lane to give you a little bit more space and comfort feel i also really like the shifter i think this is kind of nice so in the reverse there we go just kind of maneuvering it around super easy really cool nice and light steering both cars have that it really comes down to i think the decision of do you like the styling of the ionic 5 or the id4 yeah because they're very different id4 is very curvy and this is very angular but they both this is quick but if you're an eevee nerd which you might be if you're watching our videos there's almost no question as to which one to get you have to get this one because you get the fastest charging the 800 volt stuff the cool integrations everywhere you get a driver only ac mode like it's like that next level of deep tech this is for the tech nerds so then hyundai explain to me these usba ports everywhere yeah they it shouldn't have usba ports in here not even one of them they should all be power delivery usbc what i really love to do and i know it's the least relevant test those i'd love to get both cars on track because they both if i was to describe the way they go down a back road i would describe them identically they both are soft but handle their weight really well have relatively long wheelbases a very german competent quite type feeling this car gives you that it's almost as if hyundai hired all the old bmw chassis engineers and then made this which they did so you know it's it's just that both of these cars are really really really well done they're both refined incredibly well they both support over-the-air updates they both come with free charging they both have their own intricacies and quirks neither of them do great route planning neither of them really pre-conditioned for dc fast charging the id4 charges slower so there's less of a need but still it'd be nice to have rapid heating of the drivetrain and so for their flaws they kind of all have the same flaws and they kind of all have the same benefits except this one just charges way better and the id4 has got that weird power limitation also a limitation of it probably being a 400 volt system so the 800 voltness of this car really solves a lot there you have it hyundai ionic 5 versus id4 i'll make up my mind here in a second and let you know so as a little precursor to our upcoming giant suv comparison that we'll do at some point the id4 versus the ionic 5. i think it comes down to your choice if you drive around daily if you're not going to take a trip every day if you're not going to be road tripping more than i would say two or three times a year your occasional trip both cars can get you anywhere very little difference between them both are pretty quick it comes up to you know whether or not you can basically find the cars i think availability is the biggest determining factor however if you're an ev nerd you want to play around with battery pack thermals and maximize your charging speed and do all this stuff i think the ionic 5 by far is the easy choice just because of that insane technology built into the car it's definitely the next generation of stuff however you just need to realize you don't really feel that while you're driving the id4 is very competent comfortable does everything with prowess if you will this is just cool and it looks awesome it's a conversation piece and you better have some time because people will coming up we'll be coming up to you asking about the car at the end of the day it's a tough one for me to figure out which one i would personally take because again i'm such a fan of the way the id4 goes down the road and genuinely if i was just using a car for commuting i think i would actually go for the id4 i like the taller height i like that there's probably a little bit more room on the inside for the dogs i like that you can put the roof box on the top i think it looks amazing with the roof box up there which you currently can't do with the ionic 5. the ionic 5 can tow 2 000 pounds this can tow 2 600 it's all roughly the same no trailer hitch available for the ioniq 5 yet though so for me personally ionic 5 without even thinking about it just because of the charging speeds but again if i was just cruising around town probably the id4 in my eyes they're both winners you can't go wrong i just think the ionic 5 has that next level tech that you can't pass up if you're an ev nerd like i am thanks so much for watching another out of spec reviews video and we'll see you on the next one soon bye
