this is hyundai's ioniq five it is a fully electric compact crossover that i just took and drove four thousand kilometers across the east coast of canada here in the middle of the canadian winter so naturally i've learned a lot about the car over the past few weeks what it's like to drive how comfortable it is on a road trip if it's stable in these snowy roads and conditions what the charging infrastructure is like in the cold how good the self-driving lane keep assist tech is if you can sleep in it yeah i've tried it all i have put this car through the ringer during my time with it and even though the ioniq 5 has its pain points which trust me we will get to later on in this video it's been a lot of fun to drive overall from the images this car looks small and let me be perfectly clear here it's not huge but it's no volkswagen golf this is a compact crossover it just looks deceptively small from the images a lot of that has to do with these huge 20-inch wheels i had a guy in a car park come up to me just to tell me how good the wheels look on this car and i have to agree with them they are stunning with this like turbine pattern on the outer edge and then these like futuristic fractal shapes on the inside the side profile of the ionic 5 looks like a less boxy lancia delta integrale or a hyundai pony which is i think where a lot of the inspiration for this car came from there's all these sharp lines all over the car that really make it stand out on the road and i got to tell you i can't count the number of times that i saw people craning their necks trying to get a better look at this car when they were just passing me on the highway it really stands out the ionic 5 is a real looker and not just from the sides either the front of this car looks almost aggressive with those u-shaped daytime running lights and that triangular arrow that runs across the front and lights up at night time to make it look extremely unique it's even got a little battery indicator in the middle of that arrow that tells you your state of charge when you're plugged in and charging up the bonnet also swoops down low kind of like it does on a smaller hatchback and it's actually one huge piece that goes all the way down to the headlights so that there's no break in the design and i like it it looks good the headlights themselves have these little pixels in them that's actually a running theme throughout the car and the taillights are even better now it looks like this entire back panel should light up in these red pixel lights but unfortunately it's just the sections with the tail lights along with this strip across the back but i still love it nonetheless i think it looks fantastic it reminds me of the deloreans from the 80s which is a good thing in my opinion the door handles have that little pixel theme as well and when you walk up to the car they'll pop out from the body so that you can open the door easily another spot where you'll see that pixel theme show up is at the charging port there are these five little pixels on the outside that shows you where to push to open the door and then when the door is open you've got 10 more pixels that'll show you what your state of charge is left in the battery we'll talk about the charging speeds a little bit later but hyundai advertises that with a 350 kilowatt hour charger you can go from 10 to 80 in 18 minutes now i've had a very different experience with charging speeds but like i said more on that a little later i think this is one of the best-looking evs on the market especially at this price point i mean yes if you go into the higher echelons of the market you've got like the porsche tycon and the lucid air which obviously are a little bit cooler than this thing but like i said people appreciate this car wherever you go there's always someone stopping to take a look or take a picture of it and they absolutely should they should appreciate this car because it looks fantastic but how does it look on the inside well to be honest there are some things that i really like in here and there's some things that i don't care for too this model with the white interior looks very clean overall there's an air of openness and simplicity in here although it doesn't go to the extreme like the model 3 or model y does you'll still find all your usual buttons for climate control there's a volume knob and a tuning rocker for your audio and plenty of buttons on the wheel for changing tracks adjusting cruise control and lane keep assists and changing driving modes the steering wheel itself is a two spoke flat bottom and it's got these four pixels here in the center instead of the hyundai logo giving it a clean more minimalist look do you know what four dots in morse code means it's an h good one hyundai my personal favorite part of the interior is up here in what hyundai calls the vision sunroof it's only available on the ultimate or limited package but it's a panoramic sunroof that has a shade that opens and closes from the middle and having this is lovely it really makes the interior feel more bright and open i think tesla sunroof in the model 3 and y look a little nicer from the interior but i actually prefer this one considering that you can close the shade on a hot and sunny day the seats in here are great they have the same pixel theme going on as the rest of the car and they're heated and ventilated too so that you can heat them up on a cold day or pump air conditioning through them on a hot day they're comfortable seats overall but they're not the softest seats i've ever sat in they're a little bit on the firm side which you may like or you may dislike the driver's seat does have a very cool gimmick though if you push and hold this button down here the seat goes into an almost horizontal recline position and then there's this little stool that comes up to rest the backs of your legs on although i think that's for shorter people because it doesn't actually come anywhere near reaching mine speaking of short versus tall i never had an issue with room in the ionic five i'm almost six foot three and i can fit in both the front and back seats very comfortably with tons of room that's where that three thousand millimeter wheelbase comes in more space between the wheels means more room for the passengers i had three full-grown adults in here for parts of my road trip and none of us were ever uncomfortable the center console slides forward and backwards to give more room to the people in the front or the rear too the rear seats can also move forward or back to give you more space in the trunk and there's a good bit of space back here i can easily fit a couple of big suitcases and some carry-ons without any issues there's just over 500 liters of space without the seats folded down i believe and then almost 1600 liters when they are folded so there's a good bit of space and a power liftgate which is great now if you're a bit of an ev buff you probably know all about the frunk or front trunk since there's no engine up here there's usually a good bit of space for extra storage in the front of the car unfortunately the ioniq 5 does not have a big frunk at all there's barely enough room for a cable up here if you get the rear wheel drive variant the space does get a little bit bigger but yeah the frunk is almost useless in this version of the car all right let's talk about a few things that i don't like inside the ionic 5 and then we'll talk about the two 12.3 inch displays and the rest of the tech inside this interior the first thing i don't like is very minor but it's these strange door trims it's like this soft recycled plastic material and i get why they did it it's the whole eco going green thing but i think it just looks a little bit cheap most of the interior has this soft touch plastic throughout and the fit and finish is great but it's just this part here that seems a little bit off to me then there's the usb port situation there's two ports in the center console one below the dash and two in the rear for passengers but not one of them is usbc they're all usb-a for a 2022 car that seems a little dated not to mention that there's no wireless apple carplay or android auto in here only wired and it can only work with the port underneath the dash which is just bizarre to me and that leads us to the tech in this car let's start with these screens now as someone that reviews consumer tech for a living these huge white bezels around the screens are kind of an eyesore i wasn't expecting like a mercedes eqs style dash given the price of this car but i think these screens could have been a little bit bigger to fill this area a little better the quality of the displays and the software behind them are great though they get nice and bright during the day and they have a dark mode for night time so they won't distract you i never had an issue with brightness or contrast or anything like that even in broad daylight with the sun coming in through the sunroof they're also surprisingly responsive and snappy similar to a modern day tablet with very few stutters or anything like that all of the apps are laid out in an intuitive manner and everything's easy to find there are a ton of options in here to customize just about everything from the mood lighting built into the door pulls and speakers to scheduled charging times and charging limits to help you get the cheapest charging rates possible there's also a full set of navigation features that has a built-in search for finding local ev charging stations although i personally prefer to use plug share to find top-rated charging places most of my criticisms for the infotainment system in the ionic 5 are based around the entertainment part there's plenty of info and settings but almost nothing in the way of entertainment for when you're stopped at a charger there's no netflix or youtube or anything like that and since carplay and android auto don't currently support video apps you can't use the displays for watching video without rooting your phone and messing around with it a lot entertainment is one thing that tesla is just miles ahead of other manufacturers on and i hope that hyundai can catch up because being stuck at a charger for a while with nothing to do is that's just not very fun is it one thing that hyundai has inside the ionic 5 that tesla doesn't have though is an ac outlet underneath the rear seat is a place where you can plug in just about anything that has a two-prong or three-prong plug it's part of the v2l or vehicle to load feature the ultimate or limited trims come with a little adapter to plug in on the outside of the vehicle too that can run things like coffee machines electric stoves or other appliances i didn't get to try that out but what i did try was camping in the car using the utility mode which turns off all the driving functions of the car but keeps the climate control and ac plug turned on for as long as you need it you'll have to see how that went by watching my charging east travel series link up here if you're interested the best tech features of this car have to do with driving it for starters this version of the car has an augmented reality heads-up display that will project your speed and speed limits turn-by-turn navigation blind spot sensors and a bunch of other stuff right on the road in front of you so that you don't actually have to take your eyes off the road there are a bunch of cameras all around this car there's one at the top of the windshield one between the headlights one underneath each of the side mirrors and one in the rear each of the cameras are used for different things for example the side cameras turn on every time you flick on your signal light and the camera feed will appear on the screen in front of you so that you can easily check your blind spot that's really convenient and it's definitely one of my favorite features both of the front cameras are used for automatic lean keep and highway driving assists as long as it can pick out the lines on the road this car can actively steer to keep you in the center of the lane this thing works extremely well to the point where you could take your hands away from the wheel for a minute or two and the car will steer itself perfectly the entire time it is a little bit hyperactive i mean the wheel does do a little bit of micro adjusting to keep itself centered but once you get used to it it's very comfortable it takes away a lot of the fatigue of highway driving i kept the assist on for like 70 to 75 of my time driving across the east coast of canada and it worked extremely well for most of it the only times it had a little bit of trouble or when the lines on the road had completely faded or they were snow covered or something of course the ioniq 5 has adaptive cruise control too so it'll keep a safe distance from the car ahead of you and it will adjust its speed accordingly without you having to press the accelerator or brake at all hyundai is catching up quick with their highway driving assists and i was very impressed when you go to park the ioniq 5 all of the cameras turn on to give you a full 360 degree view of everything around you you can tap and drag to look all around and if you get too close to anything the car has parking sensors that beep at you slowly or rapidly depending on how close you get but let's say these two enormous hummers pull up on either side of you in your parking spot and you can't actually get into your car well the ionic 5 has a solution for that there's this little button on the key fob that if you press it it will autonomously move the car forward or backwards depending on which button you press watch this there's no one in the car that's me controlling it with the key fob cool huh okay now come back you've gone too far come on back hold the button move backwards you can do it come on [Music] it's a little afraid of hitting something which is a good thing but yeah it's a fun little party trick to show people so what if you don't care about all that self-driving nonsense and you just want to know how this futuristic box on wheels drives well you my friend are in for a treat in this all-wheel drive long-range variant it has 320 horsepower 446 pound-feet of torque and according to hyundai it will do zero to 60 miles an hour in 5.2 seconds but i think they were being just a little bit modest i've seen numbers from other reviewers clocking in at just under five seconds and you can definitely feel it it's quick for a compact crossover stomping on the accelerator in sport mode throws your head back into the seat with a lot of torque down low and it's a ton of fun i'm not gonna lie it's no model s plaid of course but it's a lot quicker than your average grocery getter handling around corners is great too now i'm no expert car reviewer or anything but i expected this car to have a lot more body roll given that it weighs over 4 000 pounds instead it just feels confident on these huge 20-inch 255 wide tires but that's in sport mode for most of my trip i kept the car in eco mode you can change the drive modes by pressing in on the button on the bottom left-hand corner of the steering wheel and the screen in front of you will switch designs based on which mode you're in in eco mode the car will actually disconnect the front electric motor for efficiency and only use the rear motor the result is a longer driving range obviously and noticeably more sluggish acceleration the ionic 5 also has several levels of regenerative braking that you can choose from you can change the levels of regenerative braking with these paddle shifters on either side of the steering wheel there's levels zero through three and then there's an eye pedal mode which is basically one pedal driving once you get used to driving in ipedal mode you will almost never have to use your brakes the car will come to a complete stop without touching the brake pedal at all the car has a dedicated snow mode too and trust me i made use of it on my road trip there were plenty of times where i was very thankful to have an all-wheel drive crossover with big tires on the road for the most part the ioniq 5 handled decently well in the snow i never felt like i was sliding around at all it was pretty confident most of the time my only complaint would be that the stopping power of the car in the snow and ice could have been a little bit better i'm guessing all the extra weight meant that the car had more inertia and that made it more difficult for the car to stop quickly oh one other thing the cameras and sensors in this car get blocked very quickly in the snow while driving on the highway and sometimes my active assists and safety systems would be turned off until i got out and i cleaned off all the sensors if you're going to be driving this car in the snow for an extended period of time i recommend you pick up some rainx or some ceramic coating or something to help keep those cameras clean for longer speaking of which i have to mention this if you've done any research on this car at all you probably already know this but the ionic 5 does not have a rear wiper which means the rear window was blocked with dirt and snow for about 85 percent of my trip you don't know frustration until you've experienced having to reverse this car into a charging station except the rear window is not at all usable the cameras are blocked with snow and since the rear sensors are also dirty or blocked the car is just screaming at you the entire time you're in reverse because it thinks you're about to ram into something in all seriousness though it's not a problem most of the time it's irritating for sure but it's not a big enough problem to stop me from recommending this car okay so let's talk about range and efficiency range is something i know a lot of people get worried about when talking about evs this version of the ionic 5 has an epa estimated range of 256 miles or 412 kilometers with its 77.6 kilowatt hour battery but here's the thing the epa test cars by putting them on a dyno at room temperature i drove the ionic 5 in the middle of the canadian winter on roads that were often snow covered and temperatures that were consistently below freezing and surprise surprise i got nowhere near that estimated range if you live somewhere warm like california then great you'll probably get much more range out of this car but up north we have to deal with less than ideal weather the thing i noticed after my time with it was that the ionic 5 is much much more efficient in town than it is on the highway now that's typical of all evs but it's especially true of the ionic 5. it's just not very efficient at highway speeds with all that air resistance if you want the best range keep your speed below 110 kilometers or 70 miles per hour after 4 000 kilometers of driving my average efficiency was 25.2 watt hours per 100 kilometers do what you like with that number but keep in mind that the average temperature was around minus eight celsius and i did a good bit of driving in the snow with snow tires on and that brings us to the charging situation boy oh boy okay so the ionic five is technically one of the fastest charging evs on the market but again that's in perfect conditions during the winter here in canada the cold slows charging speed significantly the fastest i was able to get was around 150 kilowatts at an electrify canada charger which is still quick but don't expect to go inside a gas station to grab a bottle of water and then come out to a fully charged car that's probably not going to happen ever at least not during the winter months the other issue is the charging infrastructure itself it's just not up to snuff yet most of the chargers that were on convenient routes to my destinations were only 50 kilowatt fast chargers if the ioniq 5 was at 10 it would take over an hour to charge back up to 80 on one of those i also ran into some issues with some of the 350 kilowatt fast chargers at places like petro canada where speeds would ramp up to 70 kilowatts and then just never go any higher this is still fairly new tech and it's going to take a little bit while longer to work out all the kinks but you know what unless you're the kind of person that travels like 400 kilometers a day for work that's almost never going to be an issue for you because if you install a fairly cheap level 2 charging station at home your car will be fully charged and ready to go every single day so after all of that what do i think about the hyundai ioniq 5 well the best endorsement that i can give this car is that i actually bought one i pre-ordered the car and it should be here within a few months this one is not mine this is the one that hyundai gave me it's a press unit for the review but i'll be getting my own very soon because i genuinely believe that this is one of the best evs on the market in its price category the ionic 5 starts off at 45 000 canadian for the base trim and then goes up to about 60 000 for the ultimate or limited trim that i have here which i think is a fair price for what's being offered but there is a lot of competition in this compact crossover ev space you've got the kia ev6 the ford mustang mock e the tesla model y the vw id4 and i encourage you to go out and try out all of them before you make your final purchasing decision but the ioniq 5 is the car for me it's the one that checked off the most boxes and i absolutely love it if you're still interested in buying one of these cars i highly highly recommend you check out my charging east video series where i documented my entire 4 000 kilometer trip and talked about all the good and bad that came with owning this car over that time period i hope you liked the video thanks for watching and as always have a great day
