TLDW: 10 hours flat - tied for 5th fastest BEV to complete Bjorn's 1000km test. In dry conditions, he said he could've made it in 9 hours and 40-45 minutes.

For reference, #1 is the Model 3 LR at 9 hours 20 minutes.

I'm happy to see that several EVs can go this distance in ~10-11 hours, because that's how long it takes me for a similar drive in an ICE car with rest breaks. Great news for anyone concerned about long-range EV driving.

TLDW: could have done it in 9:40 under dry conditions per Björn. Also if he didn’t have to charge to 80% to hop between ionity chargers, he could have saved some more time too.

All in all a great vehicle, just a tad bit thirsty at 120 km/h. I can’t imagine how it feels like to go from 10-80% in 20 minutes especially coming from a rapidgating leaf.

Great range test. Have ordered a BMW i4 M50 and really hope he will be able to do range test in that as we'll in the near future

I think this tech in the shape of an ID.3 (even with a proportionally smaller battery) would be my ideal car.

I guess they'll eventually release a hypothetical "Ioniq 3", maybe when 800V chargers are a bit more common.

I'm really looking forward to this car and was considering pre-ordering but don't live in a state that it will be sold in. Does anyone know if I'd still be able to purchase in a different state and bring it back?

Which trim of the Ioniq was this? Was it rwd or fwd?

this video was brought to you by stoneball about the wordplanner mr green ken power and marcus beale yo what's up we are now outside of clufter at the mail chargers and behind me here you see ioniq 5. this is their all-wheel drive version i'm going to do 1 000 kilometer challenge and i just happen to end up here again uh ideally i want to go downtown but we have to save time and we start from here it's close enough anyway but it's raining outside that's not ideal but i have no choice because i have this car only for 29 hours and i don't know when the next time will be if i can borrow this car so we just have to go for it according to my spreadsheet it takes 9 hours and 45 minutes to finish this the reason for it taking so long is because it's not i mean it's it's not so efficient at high speed yet put it that way so uh we are a little bit uh weird time now ideally we start at midnight it's 13 minutes past midnight and we are charting it up so oh this is pretty cool and i just realized how it looks i mean what it looks like at night i only fight what about the back check it out oh cool but okay anyway so inside i have now hooked up here we see the obi-dom and here we see it's called car scanner you can see all the status here for example state of charge bms is 95 we have 98 percent on display you can see it here also 98 and we are charging it up you see 700 and something volts um yeah so i guess we are almost good to go um if you look at the map we have to drive south towards oslo and then we take the norway route and then we do one thousand kilometers yeah we have to go over here but we have a little limitation here because this car charges fast at it it will peak at 220 kilowatt roughly so we need a unity if we charge 150 kilowatt charges it's going to be a slight disadvantage we have to leave between ionity charges on our route so that's going to be interesting but okay i don't know yet when i will start uh maybe okay supposedly the car will finish in four minutes and what's the time now uh wait what happened to the clock huh this is weird it's not it's not consistent the clock is gone now there's a clock okay uh maybe we can start at 20 minutes past midnight yeah how about that [Music] my [Music] [Applause] [Music] national we are now at svena soon and man it is raining cats and dogs over here we also passed some other areas it was just pouring down but then some areas were dry so actually most of the areas let's say around 60 70 percent of the trip so far i say at least 70 percent of the trip has been dry and then behind this where i mean these short pockets of massive rain yeah but okay consumption by the way is 246 watts per kilometer right now okay let's head over to riga yeah we are now at ioneti riga this is the first trolling stop oh we have tailwind man it was raining a lot and i feel like the rain is coming at us soon so we better just charge up here and get over we have to go go via oslo but according to a better replanner uh it expects us to spend 69 so i think i want to have a little bit of margin so i might want to go for 80 just to be sure we'll see we would get the rain and lens now 80 but look this is the strength of ionic 5. we're getting 190 kilowatts at 46 percent okay but it means that i don't have too much time i think i have around 10 more minutes here so i will take a quick restaurant break and i think i need some food some quick food really quick food and then we come back here and get ready [Music] [Applause] [Music] we just passed oslo now and it's three at night and man the streets are completely empty wow okay except for the carpet but you see we we had no traffic no left lane huggers so and also i think in the second half of the trip we will have dry roads again so you could say that well the disadvantage of having red growth and higher consumption is then outweighed by the lack of traffic yeah because i think yeah no traffic means that we save maybe five minutes talk for the total trip and for five minutes you can actually charge quite a lot uh i calculated you can get 15 kilowatt hours in five minutes on the ioniq 5. so it kind of balances out versus if you would drive in the daytime so uh people in the live stream many people kept asking me hey bjorn how is the rear window or the rear yeah the rear glass uh i can try to show you here miss see try to give you an impression there roughly ah okay yeah that's that roughly like this so you see the the slope or the angle of the the glass makes i mean it catches the water but there is no rear wiper so for example in a tesla model sx03 um the angle there does it makes it so that the water won't hit the rear glass but here it will hit it and then there's no way to wipe it we are now at the second charging stop ioniti ring dansko again and man i use a better rule planet to estimate and according to about the roof planner we're supposed to arrive with 12 we arrive at 15 percent okay so i know roughly what to expect now so right let me see are we getting good speed okay i have to hurry uh i will go to the restroom do my stuff no need to clean the windscreen even though the bucket is here so wow how to say this car is a freaking machine last time i charged for 18 minutes and i drove 185 kilometers to get here something whoa okay anyway restroom break man i had a bad stomach i had to go to the restroom i was watching the live stream the car was charging at 210 kilowatt and then 160 kilowatt and after 18 minutes we are 82 we have to leave now look at that speed [Music] thanks [Music] we just passed oslo now we're heading against uh towards uh garden one yeah uh but uh yes so the status right now is that we have 41 kilometer on gum 14 left and we are 24 kilometers away from you can see it down there uh away from ion tidal so right now it seems like we should be able to make it to dark if not then i can always bail out on garden one about uh 10 kilometers before yeah we'll see but man you can see that we have more traffic going into the city and out of the city and right now it's six in the morning and seems like most of the rain has gone it's gone now yeah so hopefully on the last 400 kilometers we will have nicer weather maybe even dry tarmac again we are now a third charting stop wow third chinese stuff we've been driving pretty far between each charge this one this last time we went over 200 kilometers on wet road not too bad but okay we are here you guys know this the drill uh we don't need to clean the windscreen because it's been raining uh i want i think i might want to grab some food at 7k but look at that sunrise wait where is it sun rises that west no east east sunrise is east somewhere over there yeah so cooling has started oh the flaps open yeah normally the flaps will be closed here you guys can see that the cool looks of it on the front but the cd value is not the best it's point two and the round coefficient is 2.288 so maybe it's because yeah i don't know they they didn't make it as round maybe in the back especially like kona i think kona is more efficient than than ionic five but ionic five i mean it might not look big but it's actually a pretty large car yeah and in the back ah i kind of like this design cool cool and you see as always okay it was a little bit slow in the beginning we're getting 180 kilowatts in the beginning and now we get taking 215 again so i don't have too much time i have to hurry this is just yeah let's uh go inside the gas station oh what the heck happened to the smokers wow i went inside the gas station got a sandwich came back i have 66 and we are charging 156 kilowatt what i need 80 so in a couple of minutes maybe i'll be good to go [Music] we are now at the root chakra i had to test this one that was a bit tricky sneaky because i recorded briefly i saw it that you know this is supposed to be 200 kilowatts i did see 180 kilowatt briefly until it start throttling so so you see if you come here with an eight volt system 800 volt you might be able to get 200 kilowatts but i need to top up a little bit here not too long uh because i have to drive an extra distance so um it might not be too optimal but at least we're getting 140 kilowatts right now um i have to estimate so that uh we will go back to ionity and then the ionity will be the last starting stop so stay here a little while and then one more stop and then we are done but right now unfortunately it looks like we might need 10 hours for this and it's simply because of the wet road i calculated that we might have lost as much as 15 minutes because of the wet roads yeah so will i redo the test uh i'll see yeah okay we're heading south now and uh okay i just have to show you guys let me see trying to give you okay there you go uh that's what the back looks like right now the rear view yes um the rear glass is slightly wet and then got some schmutz so you have almost no visibility back there and there is no wiper yeah we are getting close to minnesota now and wow look at this finally oh it's it's 20 degrees celsius outside and the road is getting dry again oh man that's nice so it means that for the last uh 250 kilometers roughly we might be driving on dry roads home but we've been unlucky around half of the trip around 500 kilometers at least has been uh wet road yeah so right now it's eight in the morning what means we've been driving for seven hours and uh 45 minutes roughly yeah and we have to drive another 250 yeah so we have 44 so it means that we still yeah we still have to drive a little bit more before we charge last time last charlie stop now we calculate that we're going to go to the north to harman and then go south and we will end up at mcdonald's it's a bit weird because i'm i'm going to do some charting tests with this car after the 1000 kilometer challenge i'm running out of time because i have to return the car soon so yeah but i also checked now about the route planner and everything as usual i better plan this was super useful because i don't need to calculate i just let it calculate for me and then i add a little margin and then usually we end there so i calculate that we need i mean if we go 70 we should be safe look at this speed man all right a little bit more and then off we go we are on the final run now 901 kilometers so far we need to do another 98 and it's 9 39 so let's see that means nine hours and 20 minutes what the heck happened uh okay let's just let's get over there as fast as we can i'm back again what we are now around harm and it's nice and dry over here 21 degrees celsius i've been driving circles around dar over there it was raining and wet on the road oh well okay anyway i'm going to turn around soon let me see i think at the next turnaround point right on crown q7 yeah this is the one okay okay let's turn around and head back to oslo right towards oslo we will stop at garden one okay here is a countdown a little bit late 992 993 994 995 another then six 997 998 999 1000 1000 the consumption was 262 pretty high but look at the time 10 26 10 26 okay okay okay let's uh let's go to the charger all right we are now outside of mcdonald's i'm going to test the hyper charger behind me here that one is 225 kilowatt um based i mean 800 volt based yeah but anyway that would be in a different video i'm going to test how this car well over here not too interesting i want to test how this car converts 800 volt or 400 volt to 800 volts yeah but anyway the 1000 kilometer challenge so i asked the live stream people uh just for confirmation plus i provided some information to them and i'm gonna provide to you guys that actually before we started we were supposed to start at 20 minutes past midnight but i had to pee in the bush and you know holding it is not good for the prostate so when i came back i was like oh it's about to turn 20 right and then i unplugged and then when i sat in the car i had to reset everything and i started driving just 10 15 seconds after i started driving it ticked up to uh 21 minutes past midnight but normally when i start my trip from uh uh foolish at circle k if we do set over there and i have enough time i will sit ready and then right when the clock turns 10 in the morning usually or whatever i will go you know so you see you lose a little bit time there and then we didn't really have to stop at the roots hog to charge there we could have skipped that training session and instead i the reason why i visited that charting station was i wanted to test the 200 kilowatt charger it's again for for the purpose of making video about the whole uh 400 volt 800 volt base so you can say yeah i did a little bit of extras work there and maybe i lost one two minutes and also when i did the range test i found out that this car under reports the distance by 0.4 percent roughly point three to point four percent so it means that when you saw the 999 it was actually more than one thousand kilometer it was one thousand and three or four kilometers you think you don't no big deal well it actually means usually two minutes difference so that's why we have decided that the time is going to be 10 hours yeah not 10 15 not 10 hours and five it's going to be 10 hours because of the circumstances yeah and why was it that slow because i also expect it to be nine and a half something but it turns out that this car at high speed is not that efficient that's one problem another problem is that we need to charge on 220 plus kilowatt fast charges uh whereas for example for id4 you can go to any 150 kilowatt because that was the maximum speed for it anyway right 125. so this car had to leap between ionity charges because we had no other options in between there so then we had to charge with 80 85 a couple of times but the last problem is that we had rain so you see the consumption was 261 which is kind of high but we know again based on physics and we know a lot of the stuff that if it wasn't raining like crazy we would probably have consumption of 230 ish something yeah 230 200 if we assume around 230 which is more likely that means it means that uh we would have spent 30 kilowatt hour less and then based on how fast we are charging we can then estimate that we would then arrive or we would then spend 15 to 20 minutes less time charging and that means that on a completely dry day like it was for the model 3 we would then spend 9 hours and 40 minutes best case yeah so i guess i don't have to redo the test i mean we already know and also the spreadsheet also points toward the same thing here so yeah and the reason why i guess it couldn't beat the e-tron gt or or um model s is probably because at high speed this car becomes a little bit thirsty and then that's the achilles heel of the model or the ioniq 5. but on the other hand very nice car yeah and charges like a boss that's the thing you can charge it to 80 85 no problem you know it goes really fast versus tesla to get that really good time you kind of have to charge to 50 every time if you charge you 80 it will take longer and then the time the 1000 kilometer time will be closer to 10 hour yeah so yeah i think that's going to be it for now i hope you guys enjoyed this video as always thank you for watching and talk to you later
