[Music] today's video is sponsored by pepero calm visit Peplow calm and setup part about accept food delivery anywhere in the continental united states rachel has been with me on youtube and facebook now for about a year and she contacted me to see if i could offer any solutions for this fairly unusual issue that she's dealing with does your dog act kind of crazy or strange on a walk no I mean like really crazy and really odd tell me what the oddest thing your dog does in the comments below in today's video I'll give you some tips on what to do if your dog doesn't listen to you on a walk or if they react to other unforeseen distractions make sure you like me on Facebook click thumbs up and make sure you're subscribed so you see all of my future dog training videos now to meet Lafite and Rachel I had the pleasure of meeting Little Feat yesterday and he had so much energy he's a very charismatic dog how old is the face he's almost three and a half how long have you had him I got him when he was about 6 months old so what kind of issues are you having specifically he's very high-energy when we go on walks he starts off just kind of like a tornado just like he sees things like a truck or a bus he lunges for them yep and and he lunges for trees trees and that is what's interesting what's his exercise regimen like well we usually start the day with a pretty long walk every mother at least 3 work today and then maybe instead of one of those walks like playtime when you're playing with him off leash for example does he tend to exhibit this behavior barking at everything or jumping on things like the trees not at all so it's only when on leaf it's pretty common for him to behave this way on leash a lot of dogs especially if they're an energetic type of dog because they do what they can so in other words if he were off leash his preference might be to run around all over the place and get some of that energy out but since he can't do that in a city setting like this he tends to try and get his energy out in other ways as long as you continue to exercise him more we'll probably see a reduction of this but that's not the point of this video the point of this video is to show you what to do when your dog does react unfavorably on a walk how well does he do his basic obedience in a high destruction environment he's not as certainly but he does he sits he stays he knows leave it and do you feel like he can do these things in an outdoor environment before we can ask the bee to behave on a walk Rachel and Lupita's show me that they've got some basic communication that boy so a nice little sit here I love that will you do lie down when you ask I mean you know the hand gesture okay have you taught him how to leave turkey alone when you drop it like that there's a reason for this this is going to tell me how well he listens to you in the face of a minor distraction okay leave it and then now ask him to look at you please focus yes and if you want to reward that that's totally fun you need to be able to do this exercise before expecting your dog to listen to you in the face of heavy distractions let's see the description if you need help with teaching this exercise to your dog meanwhile check out Lafitte's awesome tug skills while I tell you about pet slow calm have you guys checked out pet flow calm yet you know Peplow literally has we're what okay all right so you can see Lafitte loves this tree once he goes after one thing it sort of charges him up because it looks like yeah she goes right after it all wrong I mean my goodness oh it's hell that's interesting well it's not trees so we have a squirrel now in this case you know since I see he's fixated on it and we've got cars that were off this is a distracting and I just wanted to see if he would take treats right there so what I think we do know in a very distracting situation okay I've seen enough let's see if we can make some progress with Lafitte Lafitte totally overstimulated by his environment he's barking at things he's going kind of crazy when you see that your dogs just loses it or lack of a better way of putting it it's a good idea just take a step back and approach the situation a bit slower so that's what we're going to do now you routinely go after this tree yeah so this one this is his number one stop right here man you go I know it's it just address the point of failure here in this case walking past the tree and just take your time we have to show him how to be a little bit more civilized you think he's likely to jump on this tree if we walk past it again right yeah my general game plan is to walk past that tree and when I read it in his eyes that he's thinking about jumping on that tree that's what I'm gonna try and get his eyes on me in order to communicate to him I don't want you to do that the idea of teaching and easily distracted or reactive dog is to get their eyes on you before their interest in the distraction becomes too intense if Lafitte indicates that he's going to lunge I'll simply escort him promptly away from the distractions whatever it is so I have no idea how this is gonna go it's gonna be my first time trying it it's very important to pick your battles when you're working with a dog on something like this because very often there are a variety of issues that you're probably frustrated with try and tackle them one at a time so in this case I'll ignore the jumping I'll ignore the biting on the leash but I'm gonna focus on really getting in to lay off that tree because that's the most urgent matter that I think we need to correct here look at me yes getting them warmed up with a nice look at me I'm gonna try and walk over here by the tree hey that was good a car just drove by he didn't bark at it now that may or may not mean anything I'm gonna reward it because he doesn't bark it every part over here that's cliffy nope sir over here good I mean again upon the thought entering their mind is the time to address this again ignoring this over here sin no sick yes so here we're a bit closer this is good no sir now right now I see he's looking at something I don't know what it is could be a scroll this way so look at me here up here yes great but ah okay see no this way come here right here right so here's another example you parking here at the vehicles over here Lafitte oh they just pray come on come on come on over here good yes over here and right there I tended to get a little peppy a little playful to be more interesting than that now he obviously went and started biting the lease so now I've got to try and get him more focused on me that's the challenge here look at this oh boy you're so crazy look at me sit please no sit I mean go back to the basics use what they know he knows a basic sit he's willing to do it for Turkey and I can get his eyes on me when I hold it up like that to get him to focus on this part of the world ah yes now I'm gonna try and walk past that tree again let's go no what are you doing here leave it alone please very good let's walk I'm going in slow motion when you know when you're there when you know a behavior is likely to occur you can anticipate it correct before it occurs let go yes sit please very good great let's walk come on nope up here look beat yes good let's walk come on go we're here come on yes good this way oh good now you know this is a good time to talk about this but this is where so many dog trainers give the wrong advice of using a prong collar or a choke chain to get a dog under control that is completely unnecessary you just have to be patient understand that this is very exciting to your dog and be prepared to connect with and teach them excellent I mean he looked right at the tree you have to do this a lot of times you can't just do it once or twice and expect it to be fixed so you have to be really consistent good and right there I mean he looked right at it he left it alone he was very respectful I'm gonna give him a jackpot reward and let him know how much I love that now Rachel why don't you come on over here now let's see if Rachel can duplicate our preliminary success and then we'll continue on our walk don't wait for the behavior to emerge to then correct rather prevent it by being focused on your dog nobody knows I'm like you do yes that was it right there come on good walk back here breaking down a little bit here yeah but no you got him back that was good too boy now walk past ward this time if he does well and so okay to use that turkey to get their attention when they're super excited don't feel like your training isn't working if you have to use treats that's very normal you will get off the treats later that your training is starting to pay off it's about connecting the dots putting the pieces together and really using that to teach your dog a broad array of various skills and and tasks like this we're ready to go to the next level with this we've shown the feet to behave around this one distraction but that is a far cry from teaching and debate around all distractions that will if you just feel like he's not tuned in to you just ask him to sit at any time you don't need an excuse to do that yep see I would actually yeah put him in that Casilla can see it coming there you can see he was thinking about doing head address these matters very slowly be very dialed in to your dog as you walk past do you know what I mean all about the eyes not about the tools that was good good and put him into a sit right there really I want him to address it my goal isn't to hurry up and get past the distraction my goal is to teach him how to respond around the distraction it could be a car it could be a squirrel it could be a number of things but you would deal with all those distractions in exactly the same way barring any other substantial underlying reasons that they might be doing up but this is pretty textbook leash reactivity right here okay periodically you're free to put him into a sit or if you because right now he's on alert he's looking for stuff to go after so if there were me I would say you know take a step back here and I would say hey look feet look at me please very good see this this isn't working I put the turkey at his nose he's like I don't want the turkey I want that squirrel if your dog is going after a squirrel like that will create distance you can way from that distraction you put him into a sit-stay go to the last known place of compliance and teach from there that's how you deal with massive distractions like squirrel so our goal is to try and make it to the end of the street without him going crazy since Lafitte was getting super worked up I decided to give Rachel a break and work with him for a bit I'm gonna go ahead and give it a shot since we're getting into a new realm of distractions here sit good I can get him to sit that tells me he's in a trainable mindset which means I'm in a workable area here if he was so overstimulated and barking and lunging I would need to go back that way until I got him back local son right up here let's go come on hey hey hey yes good sit I took three steps there and I'm in this very distracting setting there's squirrels above us here in the trees come on let's go very good that's awesome buddy repeats it good yes not that a reward here because I feel like I've got him under control my goal is just to make it to the end of the street here come on yes good sit good let's go come on no sir right there his eyes just lit up do you want this no come on let's go I see I see it coming so I'm gonna create this this over here good sit nope see yes excellent job good boy up here now you know in a perfect world I'd like him to be a little bit more focused on me but he's still behaving acceptable so I'm gonna give him some Turkey here to let him know I love it good boy come on good sir look feet come here and right here we're in a we're in a zone right now where he can go off at any minute so I'm really trying to be very focused on him right now come on the feet let's go okay let's go you're doing great going slow again I'm here to communicate with him let him know I love it I love it oh my gosh we're almost at the end of the street it's happening come on there's a barking dog in the background he's doing well sit yes I'm gonna give him a really big reward there because that was an amazing amazing victory I love this what do you think you want to go see The Barking Dog do you want to try yeah we have a barking dog coming up here and we want to be proactive we know that we're addressing a dog behind a fence here so we want to ask him to sit preemptively we're not trying to insist on total perfection but any compliance and not jumping off a fence here oh good boy hey awesome now yesterday we attack this magnolia tree mm-hmm and then sit there make it make it hard for him he's there good because in essence what we're doing we're saying this is how you behave when you're confronted with this thought there are gonna be those times invariably where you have to correct the behavior afterwards the first thing to do is to create distance between you and the distraction and case in this case the card that drove by and then put them into a sit get his eyes on you just like you did there that was awesome we don't need to insist that our dogs stare at us we would like a glance from time to time but more important here is that he's not attacking the tree all right we go good boy check didn't he jump on this tree you know gonna stop cuz you put you in sit see have you saw the behavior coming she stopped she put him into his sit and she's gonna go very slowly how's this tree walking good boy I would say just for good measure put him into a sit right by the tree just to really address the distraction problem head-on here and it's on us as people to be one step ahead of them at all times always be looking for that next distraction that's likely to set them off it's not always going to be possible but usually it is okay how we walk hey why you going over there good boy in this case you just keep going because in this case he's a little too overexcited for his car I now put him into a sit now that we're far enough away from the barking dog you have to use your judgment in this cases there's gonna be instances where you can get him under control and there's gonna be instances where they're just like crazy and they're like I gotta see what's behind that vent at which time you have to make the decision to move on then get them under control he didn't go for the dog before he did go for the dog this time yeah and I mean that's dogs they're not robots we can't always predict what they're going to do so the next best thing to do is to get to know our dogs and bond with them and understand every thought that they're thinking and the way to do that is to spend a lot of quality time with your dog this is kind of the most distracting place because you have cars driving by the intersection of squirrels trees everything you love ready and if you want to go into a city we've come up against a really problematic tree right now so we're just gonna keep trying it good and gonna sit right there I think it's good cuz you were able to get him back that's why you don't need to go super far away I saw him acknowledge you does that make sense yeah because if he wasn't acknowledging you at all he would just get away from the tree and then try again but I only have to go as far as I've got it in back so if it's right there then we can just do it right that's correct you want to go to the last known place of compliance for those of you that are dealing with this it's not always easy to be as patient and understanding and frustration freeze Rachel's being with Lafite right now but it will get easier with time just commit to practicing at it and like anything you'll get good at it good all right so we got that tree done here we are well under the same general area where he tends to get distracted a lot you know this where the squirrels live and he knows it yeah here we go good boy good boy look at you we're down to the final stretch here we have three more obstacles we have a small tree we have a telephone pole and then we have his favorite tree the tree on one side and the telephone pole on the other tree number one put him into a sit in front of the tree either at the tree or before it he did really well he didn't go after this tree here we are telephone pole and the tree there like right next to each other so you have to kind of do double duty here and try and walk through this you have to be prepared for both it's like a gauntlet good and can he make it to the front door yeah what's the oddest thing that your dog does tell me the comments below if you enjoyed the video and you found it helpful or educational or entertaining click thumbs up
