in today's video we're going to really learn how to time stretch our samples so if you haven't seen my other video I spoke about a new AI system that I found where it gets you the stems from any song bro and they do it in so efficient way and it's for free watch the video and you'll see what I mean I downloaded these stems from it so that's what we're going to use let's load our base shift sample now this song is Florence and the Machine it's called dream girl [Music] thank you it's a bit quiet but it did a great job extracting the Bass from the song but what I want to do is just take this first half so let me just do this this coming a bit more okay I got this part Loop as you can see the BPM is saying that 75.54 and I don't know for sure it's not like I put this in the website online and try to figure out the tempo but that doesn't matter I'm just going to go off what the NPC says but what I'm gonna do is just process this I'm gonna press discard this time only because this is the only part of the base that I want and then now that I have the base I want to process it again so like I mentioned in the other video what I like to do is get close to the tempo as you can see if I left it on about eight or below it's only going to be at 20 and you you're not going to like stretch it from that low you still want to be close to the number that it was at and it says 75 this is 77. I want to actually put this at 84. so now let's do it this is a good sample for this video because with Florence and a machine they really do a lot of live playing with their music so it's not like everything is on the grid so let's go to BPM this is my favorite way to chop I'm just going to break it down into eight notes [Music] now let's just zoom in so I can show you what I'm talking about we hit the first pad the first pad is okay second pad you can see that it's kind of not on the beat you want to kind of zoom in and adjust it by using the start and let's just do it for the rest of those foreign now I got all these on the grid [Music] you hear that little click we're just going to zoom in a bit you see that that's if you wanted to get crazy and take out the clicks so let's just drop the tempo now to about 84. all right so now that we have the base chopped up hold down shift go to convert new drum program using slices let's do it Main and then we just go up and let's just rename this so it's not a weird name and we'll call that base let's record it two three four one two three four one two three four so now that we have that I just want to do a little bit of edit to the base so we could hear it a bit better first thing I want to do is just go to modulation and stereo width since we're using the base within the song most likely this bass is in Stereo so let's go to edit let's hear it let's just drop the width now let's go back as you can see now the line is straight that means it's in mono because let's have it off see it's kind of a little bouncy there's a little stereo in it now what we can do also is just like turn it up I'm just going to turn it up from here for right now [Music] and what I'm gonna do is use a compressor to kind of like tame it let's use a bus compressor and let's just go to light compression [Music] so sitting around negative three let's turn that down a little bit lower than nine that's good for right now and then another thing that I like to do when it comes to samples is use drum brakes especially at this tempo right it just makes it a lot easier to find your chops and it's going to help with your time stretching too so that's why I want you guys to understand Time Stretch is not just a one method thing like you're going to have to come up with different ways to get around sampling and making sure that it fits and then let's go to the drum kit I got some drum brakes [Music] yeah I like this this one goes so crazy as you can see the tempo is saying it's like 170. I don't really care for that you know I'm just going to count it myself so one two three four one two three four most of the reason why you're probably having difficulty with your time stretching is because you're not counting the bars right so for example if I left this part in this is how it would sound process that extract it call it drums do it and then what we're going to do is process this and change the tempo to 84. this is 84.99 I'm just going to go ahead and still this make sure it's at 84. and then I like to do the same thing with the BPM and I'm just going to go up to the eighth note shift convert new program using slices now let's record two three four one two three four one two three four one two three four one two one two one two three four one two three four one two three four one two three four that last part it wasn't the sample that was off I was just kind of off on the plane so we're just gonna adjust it a bit let's just zoom in so these ones were off like crazy yeah these last couple of notes were crazy off and that's why I like to chop everything down into smaller bits because then I could do stuff like foreign with your drum brakes don't just just use the loop by yourself like you can't really do too much so now that we got the drums covered let's go get some vocal chops in here due to YouTube you know can't get all crazy but I'll just play like a second of it this is the part that I'm trying to get so you understand I'm trying to get this part but if you want to chop it chop it to the beat and then you'll hear like okay how much you need to come in at starting a bit closer into the sample actually you can just hear how it just chops down on a bit and if you can't hear it it may take time to develop your ears but let me just exaggerate it a little [Music] close attention when I zoom in [Music] you can just hear how the vocal is like really coming down on that downbeat on the kicks and the bass so now I have my starting point let's zoom in a bit further most people are used to this counting one two three four but now I'm gonna show you how to count in the eighth notes because when you could count in eight notes you could get some nice unique chops so it's like one and two and you can even look at the chop we just want that chop that little part right here I don't want that in it but first I gotta make sure I'm still chopping it to the right Tempo because if I don't you know it's going to have that same issue we have with the drums process this extract it call it chop one and then now we have our top one you see how the temple is all crazy we're just gonna skip over that come down to like four because if you go down to two that's too low remember stay close to your tempo 84. let's do it what I'm gonna do is actually assign it to a pad I'm not gonna really chop this one up because it's already less than a bar let's assign it one two three four one two three four let's just solo this and hear what's going on [Music] so you hear that like this is like a hiccup in your sample but it's not a hiccup it's just like this extra part since I already got the temple correct I could cut that part out and I don't have to like process and silence I can just leave it like this and actually it's better to do it from here either way you can see how I affected in the sample and it's still affected in this section three four since we don't want that part we still gotta fill up that space and this is why I like tell lent hold on because with tell lent you could stretch it a bit [Music] you see how it's stretching it let's have it off again [Music] versus let's just exaggerate it a bit [Music] so I don't want too much [Music] that should be decent and besides the drums already knocking the base already knocking you're barely going to hear it but you still wanted to kind of use the tail length so that it's not a complete Decay and you can just hear it in the beat right if it was off you see how it just cuts off [Music] versus like going up [Music] and now that we got that we could go back into the vocal chalk and go to our vocals again and get another chop and another chop that I like is around here cuts off right here process distract chop two and then we just repeat the process you see I'm not looking at the temple and getting all technical music is not about technicality especially with sample you're going to learn you got to really use your ears if you want to get good at sampling so 84 I'm just put it at I'm just going to assign it now don't click on the first pad because if you click on the first pad it's going to overwrite your other chops so go to the second chop so let's just overdub that play start or one two three four one two three four one two [Music] so it gets annoying when your sample is still playing on and on now my way around that all I do is just put it on note on and control it now you can hear that it chops according to how long I hold it so then I won't face those issues but then I gotta redo it and really play it well one two three four one two three four one two three four one two one two and then from there you can just zoom in and then stretch it out make sure you go to edit n and just drag it out let's go back into sample edit get another chop there's another one that I like or it's like right here one two three four so let's zoom in a bit more play the drums so like I said if you start a bit earlier it's going to have a little bit the case so you want to get it right on the downbeat [Music] so this one swells in and I kind of like how that sound so that's why I said it really comes down to your ears but you still gotta count correctly one two three four one so cutting off right here process extract same process again um this will be chop three and then do it go all the way to chop three and process time stretch go to 84. do it now that we have that I'm going to assign that to the third pad this time and let's record that in one two three four three four three four let's say you don't like that Amma in your chop what we're gonna do is the same thing is cut that part out but since this is a big part we're going to have to up the length a bit more let's just solo it so we can hear what's going on when we do that [Music] you see that sustained [Music] versus [Music] so it extends it and we want to extend for pretty much that whole part now it would have been easier if they had a section like oh extended for a bar or so but like I said comes back to your ears on the MPC you're going to have to use your ears more so if you want to get better at the MPC you're going to have to train your heirs too like bring back musicianship so now we have that let's hear it with the whole thing [Music] so if you
