[Music] whether you're building a new home or you're remodeling an older home one of the important decisions that you have to make is what kind of texture to put on the walls texture can really enhance the look of your house just think of your drywall as a canvas to create the look that you want for your home texturing is really easy and there are several different choices available that we're going to show you today and you can do it yourself this is sand texture and as the name implies this is a texture that has sand added to it it comes pre-mixed in a bucket simply put it in a paint roller pan and then use a paint roller to apply it if you want your texture to be a little bit finer add some water this is going to give your walls a nice smooth subtle texture it takes texture about 24 hours to dry and since we have seven different texture applications to show you today i've made a mock-up so that you can see what the finished product will look like once it's dry this is the sand texture and because of that sand that's what raises it away from the wall a little bit that gives you a slight three-dimensional look after this is dry then you can simply paint over the top whatever color you want the next application i'm going to show you is smooth texture again this is pre-mixed and we're going to use a paint roller to apply it but the difference between this and the sand texture is that we're going to use a coarse napped roller this time this is going to give us a different look now make sure that you get a lot of this on your roller you want to go ahead and cover it up completely then apply it to the wall using quite a bit of pressure so that you're sure to cover the entire wall now go over it a second time with your roller without adding any more texture and here's where you can be creative if you push down kind of hard then you're going to get this look that's just a little bit smoother or if you pull back on your roller just lightly then this is going to cause it to sort of bubble up and then you're going to get this look so you can choose whichever look you like this is what the smooth texture looks like dry and as you can see this gives you even more of a three-dimensional look the next application i'm going to show you is called rough texture this is applied the same way as the smooth texture again we're going to use a core snapped texture roller make sure that you have quite a bit of it on your roller and apply it to the wall let it cover the entire area and then once all of the texture is off the roller go back over it lightly to pull out the texture now you can put this on your ceilings or on your walls but you wouldn't want to put it on the walls of a child's play room and let me show you why this is what this looks like once it's dried if your child falls up against it it could scratch them because this is pretty rough this gives you a deeper textured look and it's also more scattered it's not quite as uniform as the others this next application is called crow's foot and its applicator looks like a dust mop but really it's called a crow's foot applicator again i'm using this smooth texture dip this in you don't want to get too much on it just a little bit and then apply it to the wall just keep rotating it around until you get the look that you want this is what this looks like when it's dry and after you put paint on the top of this this texture really pops now our next texture is called monterey this is one of my favorite looks again i'm using smooth texture and a six inch blade now you can use a larger blade if you like make sure that the texture is very thick but you don't want it to be rough get a little bit of it on your knife or your blade and just apply it to the wall in short strokes you want to create these little ridges for relief now once this is finished and you let it dry when you add some paint and then some stain and then a glaze over the top you're going to get a really expensive textured look the last texture that i'm going to show you is called knock down to apply this you need a hopper gun and air compressor which you can rent again i'm using the smooth texture but i've added a quite a bit of water so that it will go through the hopper and out the gun now this technique of applying this is called splatter drag because the first part of it is splattering it on the wall to apply it open the air regulator valve then hold it about 12 to 18 inches from the wall squeeze the trigger and apply it [Music] after you've let it dry for about 15 to 20 minutes then it's time for the second step which is called dragging take a plastic blade and lightly drag it over the top of the texture then wipe it off with a cloth and drag it again now we have a knock down texture when this wall is dry it's going to look like this wall right here you can do any of these textures including tools and materials for less than a hundred dollars and when you're finished you're going to have a texture on your wall that will give you a unique and personalized look [Music] you
