Hello, my name is Emma, and I have a very
special video for you today. Today, we are going to play a game with my sister Audra,
but before we play our game, I wanted to teach you something. I'm going to teach you about
the word "will". We use "will" a lot in English. We use "will" when we want to make a prediction
about something. So, what's a predication? Well, a prediction is when we talk about what
we think is going to happen in the future. So, for example, what will happen in 2050?
That's an example of a question with a prediction in it. So, today, we're going to play a game
with this word "will". Let me tell you now how we use "will" in a
sentence. We always have the word "will" followed by a verb, and the verb is in the base form,
okay? So, I'll give you an example. I have here a very famous sentence: I will be back,
or I'll be back, if you've ever seen Terminator, this is an example of a sentence with the
word "will". Notice we have the subject "I", we have our word "will", which is our prediction
word or our word that tells us it's about the future, and we have our verb "to be".
I will be back. So, this is an example of how we use "will" in a sentence. Now, one
problem a lot of English language learners have is with these things called contractions.
So, a contraction is when we take two words and we make them into one word, and we lose
a letter and add an apostrophe. So, "I will", in the contraction form becomes "I'll". So,
this is what, for example, Arnold Schwarzenegger says: "I'll be back". He says that instead
of "I will be back", but they mean the same thing. So, we also have "you will" can become "you'll",
"he will" becomes "he'll", "she will" becomes "she'll", "it will" becomes, can you guess,
"it'll", "we will" can become "we'll", so "we'll be back", and "they will" becomes "they'll".
So, we will be using these when we talk about the future with my sister Audra. There's one
other thing I wanted to teach you before we get to our game, and that is the negative
form of "will". So, when we want to say something is not going to happen in the future, we can
say "It will not happen.", or we can use the contraction, which is "won't". So, for example,
"I won't be back.". He won't be back. She won't be back. It won't be back. Okay? So,
"won't" is the negative form of "will", and again, "won't" is followed by a verb. Alright,
so, now the grammar is finished. Now, it is time to play our fun game with my sister Audra. So, this is my sister Audra. You may have
seen her in a video before. - Audra, do you remember this game from when
we were children? -
- I do; it was one of my favorites. I loved it.
- - So, this game, MASH, is actually a common
game kids in Canada play. I'm going to explain the rules to Audra and to you and then we
will get to practice our verbs for today, will and won't. Okay, so we have here a box,
and we have some letters at the top of this box. M stands for mansion. A mansion is a
very big house that rich people live in. Think about the White House, that's an example of
a mansion. A stands for apartment. S can stand for shack. A shack is a really poor house
that is falling apart - that is, you know, a terrible house. Nobody wants to live in
a shack. And H stands for house, okay? So, this game is a game of prediction. We are
going to predict Audra's future. We're going to find out, is Audra going to live in a mansion,
an apartment, a shack, or a house. Audra, what are you hoping for?
- - Fingers crossed, mansion. I think that's
a - a goal would be mansion. -
- Okay, so fingers crossed, we hope Audra will live in a mansion in the future. Now,
I have here some names. We have Ryan Gosling, he's a Canadian actor.
- - Ooooh!
- - Okay, so we know Audra's opinion on Ryan
Gosling. Ryan Reynolds... -
- Also good! -
- Okay, so Ryan Reynolds is another Canadian actor. We have Will Smith. Will Smith was
Audra's childhood crush... -
- Fresh Prince of Bel Air! -
- So, the guy she liked when she was younger, and Chris Pratt. Chris Pratt is your current
crush. -
- That's correct. -
- The celebrity Audra has a crush on today, or really likes today. So, these are Audra's
possible future husbands. So, she's going to have one husband at the end of this game,
and we will see which husband she will have. Okay, now we have some numbers. We have zero,
ten, three, and five. Audra, do you remember what these numbers stand for?
- - I do. So, these numbers actually stand for
how many children you will have. I have to be honest, I do not want ten children. I am
not hoping for that number. I think my goal would be three children. That sounds good
to me. -
- Okay! So, we'll find out how many children Audra will have in the future. And last, we
have four places. We have Hawaii, the Galapagos Islands, Antarctica, and Japan. So, these
are four places Audra - one of these places Audra will live in the future based on the
prediction of this game, okay. So, are you ready to play, Audra?
- - I think I'm ready!
- - Okay, so Audra, close your eyes and tell
me when to stop. -
- Stop! -
- Okay. So, I have one, two, three, four, five, six. So, we're going to go around here
counting six and anything I land on, Audra won't have in her future, okay? So, one, two,
three, four, five, six. No! So Audra won't marry Ryan Reynolds. I'm sorry.
- - I think he might be already married, so
it's probably for the best. -
- Okay, well that's good. One, two, three, four, five, six. So, Audra will have children
in the future. One, two, three, four, five, six. Audra won't live in an apartment in the
future. One, two, three, four, five, six. Okay.
- - Uh-oh, that ten is still there. Makes me
a bit nervous. -
- So, Audra might have ten children in the future. One, two, three, four, five, six.
Well, here's some good news! Audra, you won't live in a shack.
- - That is very good news. I don't think I
would like living in a shack. -
- Okay, especially with ten children! That would be very difficult. Alright, so one,
two, three, four, five, six. So now we know how many children Audra will have. Audra,
how many children will you have? -
- I'll have three children, which is perfect for me.
- - And notice Audra used the contraction of
"will". She didn't say "I will", she said "I'll", which is possible. You can also say
"I will", but "I'll" is more common in conversation. Alright. One, two, three, four, five, six!
Wow! So Audra, where are you going to live? Where will you live?
- - I'll live in a mansion!
- - Very good!
- - Can we have a high five for that?
- - Okay, high five! Great! Okay, so this prediction
is looking very good. Alright, let's see what else we're going to find out. One, two, three,
four, five, six. No Galapagos Islands. Audra won't live in the Galapagos Islands. One,
two, three, four, five, six -
- Whew! -
- Audra won't live in Antarctica. -
- I don't think I'd like Antarctica. -
- Audra gets cold very easily, so this is really good. She's not going to live in Antarctica.
One, two, three, four, five, six. Okay. So, for
any of our audience who live in Japan, I have some good news for you. According to the future,
Audra will live in Japan. -
- That's amazing. I love sushi, vegetarian sushi, but it would be very convenient if
I lived in Japan. -
- So, Audra, you're very excited about this? -
- Yes, I would love to live in Japan. -
- Perfect! So, so far, we have three things that Audra is really happy about. Now, let's
find out with the husband - who will she marry? -
- What's my love life going to be? -
- Alright. One, two, three, four, five, six. No Chris Pratt.
- - Can we just... can we just take a moment,
if I end up living in a mansion with Will Smith, that is literally the summary of "Fresh
Prince of Bel Air!" It would be very convenient! -
- Okay! Well, let's see if you get that future. One, two, three, four, five, six. So, you
will marry Ryan Gosling. -
- I would be very happy with that. I think Ryan and I would be very happy in our mansion
with our three kids living in Japan. -
- Okay, and so I'm just going to summarize Audra's future, sorry, and I'm going to use
the contraction "She'll". Remember, "She'll" is "She will". So, she'll live in a mansion.
She'll be married to Ryan Gosling. She'll have three kids and she'll live - or they'll,
because she's with her husband and three kids - they will, or they'll live in Japan. So,
thank you Audra for coming today. I hope this prediction comes true. Audra's been really
lucky, so... -
- I'm very glad it is three kids and not ten. I think that is definitely a great future
for me. -
