hey what's going on everyone it's me mr. Mario this is a bunch of stuff on my desk this is my hand showing you the stuff on my desk and this is going to be a tutorial over how to softmod a PlayStation 2 using free mcboot well we're going to install free mcboot on there so first off if you want to go straight to the method I'm going to have a time stamp somewhere you could jump to that if you're kind of familiar with the process however if you're brand-new this if you want to know the process why we're going to do it this way please just watch the video one time through and then go ahead and try it on your own but trust me it's quite easy to do so first off I'm going to explain the process and everything here and by the way all the software downloads and all the hardware I'm using I'm going to have links to everything down below in the description so you can go and check out the stuff and you can buy this stuff either I'm using or you can kind of mix it up with your own stuff but point is let's go ahead and get started with what we're going to need first off we're going to need an original fat PlayStation 2 not a slim model I know free mcboot works on Slim's up to some of the later revisions I know the ones that it doesn't work on are than 90-thousand models and anything higher if that exists so if it's under a ninety thousand model then it will work on a slim however this install method will not work on a slim because we are going to need a hard drive for this so of course you're going to need your fat PlayStation to make sure it's working you're also going to need a hard drive of some kind a memory card a flash drive and then some way to hook up the hard drive to your computer so I'm going to get into that in a bit here but also a network adapter so you need this network adapter because you're going to hook the hard drive up to the PlayStation 2 and for anybody who's been a little bit observant you might have noticed that this is not an IDE hard drive this is actually a SATA hard drive you see when it comes to hard drives there's two main formats that we're going to be focusing on there's going to be IDE and there's going to be SATA so this is what SATA looks like this would be like I guarantee if you rip a hard drive out of your computer right now it probably has these ports on it that you can use and then this right here is the regular Sony branded network adapter for the PlayStation 2 so with this right here you can use it however check this out that is not a SATA port that is IDE which was the main standard back when PlayStation 2 was released so you have a few options and I'm going to name them all for you number one you can use a compatible IDE drive some of them don't work there's going to be a compatibility list you can check out and you can use a IDE drive that's why I also recommend this not only for convenience but this little device right here lets me take any SATA hard drive or any IDE drive and hook it up to my computer using the USB 3.0 connector so that's why I recommend something like this especially if you have a newer computer you probably don't have an IDE drive on there or any way to access IDE normally so step one you could use an IDE drive step two more option two you could also buy another piece it's about twenty dollars and I don't have a video on this yet but I will at one point once I try it myself however I've heard good things about it you can pretty much get a piece for about twenty dollars and if you have sometimes we'll know how you can take this thing apart replace the IDE connector with a SATA connector and then that way you have the original network adapter that has network capabilities on it so you could use LAN you can go online and it will work with SATA hard drives the third and final option which I'm going to be using right here is for just under twenty dollars you can get a off branded third party adapter right here and this is already modified to work with theta so as you can see this just works with the SATA Drive you pop your drive on there you pop it in the ps2 you're done the only caveat to this is these ones right here even though it looks like a network adapter this does not have network capabilities that's actually just a little dummy switch right there it's just a dummy ports that's all it is so if you don't care about using network capabilities if you don't want to do network loading or anything like that in the future this would be a good option however if you ever want to connect your ps2 to your network or you want to go online you might want to go with this and either use an IDE drive or modify it to use SATA drives so once you decide on what you wants to do then we can actually get into the tutorial right here now some people might also ask a few questions because there are several tutorials covering this on YouTube they might say oh well don't you have to pick up a game like agent under fire and you have to pass - is oh don't you already need a memory card with free mcboot on it or don't you already need a modified PlayStation - of some kind for this method no we're not going to be doing any swapping we won't have to burn a disk we won't have to have access to free mcboot already we're not going to have to do any of that all we're going to need then take this away is all the stuff right here that you're seeing that's why we're going to try and make it as easy as possible and we don't want to take anything apart today now the process we're going to use is we're going to install something called free hard drive boots we're going to put free hard drive boots on the hard drive and then with free hard drive boot your system will be soft modded but we're going to use free hard drive boot to install free mcboot the reason why we're going to do that is because one we don't have to open up the system we don't have to burn another disk we don't have to do any swaps but - it's also going to be faster to boot off a free mcboot than it is to boot off of hard drive boots so that's why free hard drive boot is fine if you want to use that that's ok but we're going to make a free mcboot card just so we can get those faster boot times on the PlayStation 2 and it would be more convenient so also for this just make sure on all your storage your flash drive you've backed up anything you cared about your memory card I'd recommend backing up the data and have probably about three and a half or four megabytes of free space on here and then as for the hard drive again make sure you backed up any data you care about because we're going to be just assume we're going to be wiping everything so now that I've talked enough let's go ahead and get into the tutorial so now we're going to go over to our computer take your flash drive take your hard drive and hook them up to your computer so now that we're at our computer make sure you have your hard drive and you have your flash drive hooked up now if you go down below in the description there's going to be two packages you need to download there's going to be a free hard drive boot pack and there's going to be a free mcboot pack for version 1.9 v which is a newbie package go ahead right click and extract both of these files right here now go over to where your flash drive is and we're going to have to format it for fat32 so when your filesystem is there choose fat32 or fat don't do X fat don't do NTFS it has to be fat32 or fat go ahead select default allocation size we're going to format it like so and now that's complete right here once you're inside of your newbie package directory you want to grab all the files right here right-click copy and now go over to your flash drive and just paste them to the root of your flash drive like so once you confirm all the files are on your flash drive you can go ahead come over here right click eject the flash drive and that's all we need from it now go back over to your packages and enter the free hard drive boot pack and we're going to have three files there's going to be hard drive raw copy win hip and free hard drive boot take the free hard drive boot and the win hip and right click and extract both of these files now we need to do is go in to win hips right click and run this as administrator when it pops up you wants to select drive and find your drive make sure you're picking the right one so this is mine it's brand new and it has not been formatted so I'm going to click on Drive six it's going to give us this air saying it does not have a valid ps2 Master Boot Record which is to be expected so we can go ahead go to options right here once that is selected and I'm going to select 48-bit HD loader and that's really the only thing I'm going to change you can hit OK there now of course we can't change anything directly on that yet but we need to format the drives so we're going to do a quick format HD loader 48 bits and hit OK we do want to format this so we're just going to our quick erase and format the drive to work on our ps2 now another important thing to note with this is that this build of win hips to my knowledge is limited to 255 games on a drive so really I'd recommend a one terabyte drive or lower and as long as you have 255 games or under on there that is totally fine now once that's completed it will say the HDL settings partition has been created so it's also going to let you know that if you start this up with a Playstation 2 it might have a software license for you to accept just go ahead and note that and hit OK now as you can see we could actually do stuff with the drive right here so what we're going to do is we don't need a twin hip right now go ahead and exit out of this and we're going to go back here to hard drive raw copy we're going to right click run this as administrator go ahead continue with this and we're going to install this on our computer right here when it brings this up we can go ahead and launch the program if a License Agreement comes up go ahead and hit agree now this might look a little bit daunting if you've never done this before but trust me it's easy enough to use first we need to select our source so we're going to go down here to double-click to open file and we're going to find out or free hard drive boot pack and where that image has been extracted we need the about seven and a half gigabytes free hard drive boot image and press open now that this has been loaded into our list we need to select that as a source so make sure you highlight the free hard drive boot 1.93 image file and press Continue next we need to pick our target so this is very important make sure you select the hard drive that is going to be destinated for your ps2 if you pick another drive it's going to wipe it so be very careful but this is for sure my 500 gigabyte drive and when you select the target you can press continue now just double check and confirm our source is our image file and our target is our drive that we want to use once you're ready you can press start and then when this comes up you can hit yes as you can see it's now going to copy over that image file so this might take a little bit depending on what type of connection you're using but just wait a few minutes for this to finish up now a few minutes later it's going to say 100% and it's going to come back over to this start option right here we no longer need to do the skin since we've already done it once so we can go ahead exit out of hard drive or copy tool and now you want to eject your flash drive your hard drive and take both them out and pop them in your ps2 take the flash drive and put it in one of the PlayStation 2s USB slots take the memory card and put in one of the memory card slots and take the hard drive attach it to your network adapter and pop it into the back of the PlayStation 2 when you turn on your playstation 2 with the hard drive flash drive and memory card all plugged in you're going to come to this new menu on boot that is free hard drive boot what you want to do is go down to you launch elf and press X to start it when this pops up you're going to press the circle button to enter the file browser go down to mass and press X now and this comes up here you're going to see all the files you copy to your flash drive you want to go down to FM CB installer and press the X button to launch this file now once this menu comes up for your installer this is what we're going to be doing I'm going to go press the r-1 button and I'm going to press it again right here and I'm first going to format my memory cards so this is an optional step I'm doing this because I don't have anything I care about on this memory card and if you've done the same thing or you backed up your data I recommend you do that as well too so the memory card and slot 1 will be formatted yes I'm going to and wait for this to finish up once that is complete you can hit okay or X right there and now you have two options you can either install or you can do a multi install so if you're only going to use free mcboot on this console and you have no intention of doing on any other system you can just press the install option but I myself I have multiple systems and I might want to use on another system like a friend has for example so I'd actually recommend you do the multi install if that is your intention so select multi install and press X and then it's going to give you this warning right here just letting you know that multi install isn't the original way that free mcboot was supposed to run you can go ahead understand that and press ok and then say the same thing here once it's selected your memory card you can say yes and it's now going to install free mcboot and now that's done we can press X to continue and we can now exit so what I'm going to do is I'm actually going to turn off my console completely and then we're going to turn it back on again with everything still hooked up there so once you turn your system back on you're now going to be greeted to free mcboot version 1.95 and it will boot up much faster than it did off the hard drive as you can see your options are not as plentiful because you have more applications on free hard drive boots but what we're going to do here is we're going to open up ulaunchelf so go down to it and press the X button to enter it now once this comes up we're going to press circle to enter the file browser and here the keys and such have changed so X and servo have been reversed so we're going to now go down to mass and press the circle button on it to enter when you come inside here press circle on the install folder and come down here to boot highlight boot and press the r-1 button and we're going to press circle to copy it now we're going to come back up here press circle on the two dots press circle on the two dots again and go over to your memory card I only have one memory card in so MC zero is slot 1 MC 1 is slot 2 I'm going to go to MC 0 press the circle button on it to enter and then right here you want to press the r-1 button and you want to press circle to paste it it's now going to say that you're going to over at your boot folder you can press circle to hit OK and it's now going to copy over the rest of the basic applications that we want from the movie package and now when it's done it's just going to disappear so what we can do is we can press the circle button up top there to exit out of there and we can press the select button to exit now that we're back out here what I'm going to do is again power cycle the system and turn it back on so free mcboot will get a fresh start now once we're back to free mcboot just go ahead and scroll down we're going to have a few more options we're going to have ESR open ps2 loader simple media system so those are the things that we have wanted so we now have this memory card looking the way we want it off here now there's probably another thing you want to do which is add games to your hard drive and I'm going to show you exactly how to do that so we need to do is turn off the PlayStation to completely pull out the hard drive and pop it back into your computer so now that we're back over at our computer we're going to need to add some games over to our hard drive so make sure you have your hard drive hooked up and if you have a game that you want to rip I'm going to show you how to do this now if you're looking to download any games this is not the place to do that I cannot supply you with links or anything else but I'm going to show you how you can backup your own games so first off I'd recommend you download and install a program called image burn which will be down below in the description when you open up image burn he wants to go to create image file from disk and go ahead select the drive on your computer your disk drive and make sure the DVD or the CD the PlayStation 2 game you want to backup is on there so what we're going to do here is I'll just go ahead set these to max we'd speed but you need to go and click this folder right here find where do you want to save the game and I'm going to call this twisted metal black and hit save now at this point you wants to press this button right here and it will now begin ripping your game over to your computer you could technically do this on the PlayStation 2 however I've been told that the read speed on the ps2 if you're dumping directly from there is quite slow so trust me we're just going to want to do this from our computer once your game has finished copying over you can now exit out of image burn and you can grab the ISO that you've created so what we're now going to do is go over to your free hard drive boot pack go to win hips right click and run this as administrator go to select Drive and select your ps2 Drive now at this point you have two options one you can immediately just start adding games to this or two you can wipe it to get some of your space back and then start adding games here's the contingency though the reason why you might not want to wipe it is because if your memory card ever gets bunk or if you ever lose your memory card or something you're going to have a backup of free hard drive boot installed on your console so that way it will always be soft modded in some way as long as the hard drives in there however if you're one of those people you'd rather have that space and you know you're going to have the memory card and you're not worried about it then you might as well format it so if you do want to retain free hard drive boot you can skip this step right here however if you're like me and you wants to wipe it off there this what we're going to do make sure you have your drive selected click format drive and again do quick HT loader 48 bits and hit OK it's going to say yes ok and wait for that to finish once that is completed go ahead hit OK hit OK again and as you can see you now have some space back and you still have no games so now we're going to actually add our games now go down to add images go to image files and then hit add images go over to where you have your games for this example I'm going to select two games I'm going to have multiple ones right here and press open now at this point we can go ahead and hit start whenever we're done and just wait for your games of transfer over now once that's done you can go ahead press ok right here and you're going to have both of your games that you've selected so you go ahead check this out it shows where the partitions are at all that other fun stuff and this the cool thing if you ever wants to edit anything you can just check this and you can edit your image settings do all this other stuff apply a patch if you need to I'm going to go to edit image settings and right here you can change the name of what it will show up to be in the menu don't touch the media type and then this compatibility right here don't mess with any of this unless you know what you're doing there's a few times you are going to need some of these patches for example this one Soulcalibur - if you ever coffee so galv or - over you will need that Soulcalibur to patch so to add an individual game so you see those settings right there go to add images image files add images and go ahead and find your the game that you want so as you can see my copy of Joe or ICO is a bin cue format game in that case you just want to add the cue file if the cue file is set up properly then it should be able to find the actual bin image file you can press start right here and then when this comes up it's going to auto populate all of this for you that's totally fine most the time unless it's something specific that you know you're going to patch in you don't need to touch any of this so you can just go ahead hit okay and wait for the game to transfer over now once that's done you can press ok as you can see I have three pretty solid games right there and now at this point you can exit go ahead eject your drive and pop it back into your PlayStation 2 to play some games so now at this point I will show you how we can boot up our games go ahead and go down to open ps2 loader and press X to open it so when this comes up for the first time you're going to want to go in and adjust this stuff so I'm going to go over to settings and press X and right here debug colors you can keep that on you're just going to want to look at a few these things here and you know change them to your preference so for example remember last played game I don't now go ahead turn that off that's fine check USB game fragmentation I'm going to keep that off the USB prefix path you can change that if you know what you're doing on that automatic HED spin down you can keep that at 20 minutes if you wants to so a CD device start mode I'm going to keep that I'm going to turn that auto right there and then for the default menu I'll go ahead change it to HDD games pick that and I'll hit OK now for your display settings you can change all this as well too depending on what you want for the video mode I'm going to have this be NTSC because that's the morning widescreen I'll turn it on and hit OK now this point when you're done with your settings you can go ahead and press Save Changes it's going to save your configuration press back and now I'm going to go to the games list by pressing circle so as you can see I have a few games right here if you ever need to change settings you can press the triangle button and you can change these there's anything that you know you feel like you need to change right here most the time you probably don't need to mess with this but again this is there just in case so first up I'm going to go ahead boot up a CD game and show you that it does work by running ICO so as you can see the game is loading up with no issues I'll go ahead and press Start to skip this cutscene but we are in ICO which is a CD based game and we've been able to do that with no issues now I'm going to do is restart the ps2 and also show you a DVD based game just for completeness sake now once this launches again I'm just going to go down to open PlayStation 2 loader we're going wait for this to load up because it's scanning for our games and then our first menu should be our games list as opposed to these settings so we can pick it away or twist metal black I'll go ahead and pick twist metal black because that's what we just ripped now as you can see we just waited a few seconds and it is booting up our game with no issues right here so we have both CD and DVD based PlayStation 2 games loading so if you're at this point congratulations you now have a fully soft modded PlayStation 2 with free mcboot and perhaps free hard drive boot if you decide to keep that now I'll also show you when you go into OPL if you ever want to access the settings or anything once this comes up right here you can also press the start button to access the menu and you can change this for example if you ever configure your network or do anything else like that and you should be good to go at that point so anyway is this mr. Mario signing off thank you all for watching everyone hopefully you have a soft mod of PS 2 and you can now play a bunch of games off your hard drive if you enjoyed this video a like would very much be appreciated if you absolutely hate it a dislike is fine as well too but let me know you thought of this [Music]
