welcome back to the channel in today's video i'm gonna show you how to skim coat a wall in less than six minutes and stay tuned for some more info on the materials i use how to mix the skim coating mud and i'll also be answering more of your questions from the comments about skim coating when i'm doing the corners with the skim coat what i do is i don't go all the way up to the intersection where the ceiling meets the walls i actually go a little lower to pull it then when i come back after i've taken the majority of the skim coating mud off i go up to the ceiling and keep it nice and thin you don't want to pile up your mud in that corner at all you want a very thin coat right along the top corner and also along the inside corner where the both the walls meet again this wall had wallpaper on it we removed it actually the homeowner removed it and then i came in and removed a little more and then put the guards primer sealer on it and that sealed up the glue and everything from the wallpaper as well and any brown paper that had torn taken off the wallpaper i used an all-purpose joint compound for this first coat because there's a lot more glue in the all-purpose which means the adhesion is way better than say the plus three blue lid compound for the second coat i will be using the plus three with the blue lid the all-purpose has a green lid and it's made by usg and the way i mix it is with a corded drill and either depending on how big a batch of skim coating mud i need i'll use just a small paint mixer or a small mud mixer which is available at all the big box stores here i'm just scraping away some of the joint compound from this outside corner because i've already skim coated around that window right so i got the upper section done i can move this and get into it again i'm just getting the mud up there and then i'm gonna go ahead and smooth it all out once i get going hey and real quick if you're new to the channel consider hitting that subscribe button because i've got over 350 videos about drywall skim coating texturing you name it with drywall i've probably got a video on it so hit that subscribe button all right so let's get into some of these viewer questions from video comments hey and if you have a question leave it down in the comments and it might get featured in one of these videos so the first question is is skim coating good for covering walls with nail holes and just everyday abuse from kids pets etc uh yeah it's actually perfect for this scenario you just want to be sure to i'd fill the nail holes first and then once you fill the nail holes i'd go ahead and do that skim coat right over the walls it'll make them like brand new one more tip check out one of my videos where i use a paint roller to apply the skim coat it'll save you a lot of headache and it's great for di wires to come out with a nice looking skim coat on their walls even if it's their first time all right so here's another viewer question i get a lot can i skim coat over wallpaper because it just won't come off uh yes i have it's not you know the best case scenario for you but i've done it i actually did it we did a whole hotel where we did it to remove the wallpaper and the wallpaper would not come off so we ended up doing 500 rooms of skim coating over the wallpaper what you need to do though you got to make sure that all the wallpaper is nice and locked down no bubbles no loose spots so around receptacles and in the corners there's usually some loose spots so you want to go ahead and cut that stuff out and then on the corners you definitely want to cut it out because you're going to have to tape those corners to get them nice and crisp because the wallpaper kind of gives it a round radius look you want to cut the corners out for sure around receptacles and light switches because usually it's loose around that those areas and then just tape it as normal in the corners with the paper tape and at any seams where there's the wallpaper where it meets another piece of wallpaper you want to go ahead and tape over that as well i like to use a fiberfuse drywall tape but you can also use a fiberglass mesh but if you use a fiberglass mesh you need to use a quick setting compound which comes in a powder form so i recommend just using the fiber fuse and then going ahead and taping and mudding as normal on those areas oh i want to mention something real quick is around receptacles when you're doing mud work with your metal taping knives you want to turn the power off of that whether it's a receptacle or a light switch because you can get a shock if you hit the inside of that outlet or a switch so just turn off the power the circuit breaker on whatever wall you're working on here's a very popular question i get a lot too can i skim coat over my popcorn ceiling it won't come off well the reason it won't come off is because it's been painted so you can skim coat over painted popcorn ceilings don't try and skim coat over an unpainted popcorn ceiling and i want to mention this as well if you have a popcorn ceiling and your home was built before 1981 you want to go ahead and test that popcorn for asbestos because they stopped adding asbestos to popcorn 1878 but the companies were allowed to make a back stock so that's why i say 81 but i do have some videos about skim coating over a popcorn ceiling i'll leave that in the description below for the first skim coat it doesn't have to be perfect you just want to make sure it's nice and smooth and not too thick or too many lines that you can't scrape out once it's dry and if you have any skim coating questions leave them down below in the comments if you're looking to step up your skim coating or drywall game be sure to hit that subscribe button and also check out this video here in the end screen thanks so much for watching
