I stopped watching as soon as a knife hit the stone considering the passes he made didnโt even reach the heel. Hard pass.
Lol yeah, no.
He didn't hit anywhere near the heel on any of his push strokes on the stones.
Then he switched to the smaller stones and every push stroke rode right off the stone, scratching the hell out of the blade face.
Fighting the urge to scream at my screen while I watch him go through all the grits on the full speed belt grinder with zero attempt to do anything to keep the blade cool at all
This is good for a complete novice who doesnโt care much about knives
So on this guyโs book burrs do not exists?
Holy shit, as soon as I saw him not cut all the way through that strawberry in one pull I was done. Also, call me a snob, but smith's stones are hilariously bad. Cheap diamond plate (which isn't necessarily bad), used honing oil not diamond lapping fluid. Couldn't cut a blueberry in one pull. Then when I saw the blade flex a bit while sharpening and I couldn't take it.
Glad I didn't stop watching at the stone section because the belt grinder one was truly enjoyable. Anyways, the sheer confidence is astounding. It's funny that there are some people too terrified to put a knife to stone for the first time without detailed advice on how best to hold it, and at the same there are people so unfocused they don't notice that a good third of their knife never even touched the stone.
I have that belt sander set up exactly and I used it for a while and got good results. When I got a whetstone and started getting results I realized how in the dark I was. I still use it to sharpen my turning tools, but thatโs about it. The leather strop on the sander is pretty great, though, Iโll still do a light pass with that to finish off a knife.
