what's up youtube friends now today i'm finishing off my baby box to send to my friend and i'm going to show you how to make these fast and easy self-binding receiving blankets the great thing about these blankets is that the backing flips around to the front and also creates the binding if you get two yards of the backing and two yards of this front fabric that's enough to make two of these receiving blankets the only difference is as these fabrics will be switched on the second blanket i'll show you how fast and easy they are to whip up next [Music] so the things you're going to need to make this quick and easy self-binding receiving blanket are one piece of flannel that measures 40 inches squared now this is going to be our backing as well as the binding that folds over and you're also going to need another piece of flannel that measures 30 inches squared and this is going to be the center of our receiving blanket i'll be using my iron and ironing board sewing machine with matching thread and some pins so let's get started alright guys so there's a few steps that we need to do before we start sewing so on your 40 by 40 inch piece of flannel we need to find the middle point of each side so to do that i'm just going to line it up on my grid you could just go ahead and fold it in half and mark it if you want to do that then with my friction pin i'm going to make a mark at 20 inches and we're going to do that to all four sides when you have all four sides marked go ahead and set this off to the side now you just want to take your 30 inch square and do the exact same thing only this time half of 30 is 15. so i'm going to line it up on my grid and make a mark at 15 on all four sides next on every corner of our 30 inch square we want to come in a quarter inch and make a mark and go down a quarter inch and make a mark so to make it a little easier on me i'm just going to grab my ruler i'm going to line it up so a quarter inch over and a quarter inch down and just make a mark just like that on all four corners now you just want to go ahead and grab your 40 inch square again and i'm going to lay it so that the right side is facing up then you want to take your 30 inch square i'm going to lay it so that the right sides are touching and i'm going to match up my middle marks and stick a pin so now i'm just going to smooth down one side making sure that it's nice and flat and i'm going to stick a pin at that quarter inch mark and just to be safe a few more in between and i'm going to do the same thing to this side now i'm just gonna turn this around and do the same thing to the bottom so i'm going to match up my center points and stick a pen now that we have the two sides pinned i'm going to take this over to my sewing machine and using a quarter inch seam allowance i'm going to start right here at our quarter inch mark that we made and back stitch and i'm going to sew all the way down until i get to my other pen mark stopping at my pen mark and backstitching now if you're worried about your fabric shifting you can go ahead and just start at the middle sew down one side stop at your pin mark start back here at the middle sew down the other side and stop at your pin mark i went ahead and just threw on my walking foot so i should be fine all right guys i'm over here at my sewing machine i'll be using a straight stitch and my length is a 2.5 like i said i went ahead and put on my walking foot but it's not necessary now i put my needle exactly on that quarter inch mark and i'm going to back stitch and just keep sewing till you hit your other pen mark and backstitch all right guys so i'm coming up to my other pin mark and you want to make sure that you stop exactly on that pen mark and backstitch all right guys and like i said if you're worried about shifting and you don't have a walking foot you can always start in the middle and backstitch and then sew all the way down until you hit your pin mark and don't forget to backstitch when you hit your pin mark now all you need to do is flip it around start from the middle and sew down the other side all right guys so you should have something that looks like this with two sides done and now we're gonna do the same thing with the other two sides so i'm gonna match up my center points and stick a pen the only thing different is on one of these sides we're going to leave a three to four inch opening so i'm just going to stick another pin here i'm going to measure down about four inches and stick a pin so this right here we will leave open so all you're going to do is when we get to this pin back stitch raise your needle and your presser foot move your project down back stitch and finish off your seam back stitching at the end alright guys so it's the same straight stitch the same length don't forget to backstitch i'm coming up to my first pin on my opening so you want to backstitch slide it on down to your second pin and back stitch and just finish off your seam back stitching at the end all right guys so you should have something that looks like this with four little flappy ears the next thing we're gonna do is create our mitered corners now it is very important that you follow this step exactly so first i'll start with this corner i'm going to take my two sides and i'm going to fold them together matching up my raw edges just like that here's my two sides and i fold them together matching up the raw edges next i'm going to take my ruler and i'm going to line it up on the fold now this is very important you want to do it on the fold not down here ask me how i know so i'm going to line up one straight line on my fold and i'm just going to butt up my ruler right up against that seam line you can kind of feel there's like a little knot there where your second fabric starts and with my friction pin i'm going to draw a line should look just like that and just to keep it from moving i'm going to throw in some pins so now i'm just going to take this over to my sewing machine and with that same straight stitch i'm going to sew directly on the line back stitching at the beginning and the end so i'll show that step one more time i'm going to take my two sides i'm going to match them up now as you can see here these are even but this fabric is not now i'm not so sure if it's supposed to match but i've never had a problem with it doesn't so now i'm just going to take my ruler line up a straight line with the fold butt it up against my previous stitches and draw a line now i'm just going to do that to the other two sides all right guys same straight stitch same length i'm going to back stitch at the beginning in the end and sew directly on the line you want to do that to all four corners now that i have all four corners sewed together i'm going to take my pinking shears and i'm going to cut off the dog ear you do not need pinking shears but since i have them i'm just going to use them and you really want to make sure that you sewn this seam correctly before you cut this off otherwise you got some bad news coming and i'm leaving about a quarter inch seam allowance and now i'm just going to go back through and clip off all of my threads this really isn't necessary except for i did use black thread and i don't want to show through if you use matching it wouldn't be a problem but i only have a little bit of yellow thread that i'm going to use a top stitch so i didn't want to run out okay looks good to me and now through our opening we're going to turn our receiving blanket right side out the easiest way i find is to go to the opposite side of the blanket grab a corner and pull and now using a bone folder or something that's not sharp i'm going to poke out my corners carefully make sure they're nice and sharp now as you can see we have nice mitered corners the next thing you're going to do is take this over to your ironing board and give it a good press and i like to start from the back first and make sure everything is nice and flat and then flip it around and make sure everything's nice and flat on the opposite side now at our opening here you want to make sure that your raw edges are tucked in so everything is laying nice and flat and if need be stick a pin or two all right so i have this nice and pressed i threw a couple pins over here at my opening and now we just want to top stitch our two layers together now you can use any stitch that you want this is a perfect time to use one of those decorative stitches that you don't always get to use or you could just use a zigzag if you wanted so i'm just going to take this over to my sewing machine and i'm going to top stitch all the way around you want to sew a little bit onto the binding and a little bit onto the main part of the blanket just to make sure everything is nice and secure and we close our opening i'll meet you over at the sewing machine today i'll be using stitch letter i but like i said you can use any stitch that you want all right guys so i'll be using that stitch letter i i'm actually not quite sure what it's called my length is a two and my width is a five and i'm just going to run this seam line right down the center of my presser foot don't forget to backstitch at the beginning and the end and just keep sewing i'm coming up to my corner here and i do have a little pucker it's not a problem but i'm going to stop with my needle down raise my presser foot and spin and just keep sewing and once you finish top stitching your receiving blanket is finished and i think this one turned out really cute i really like the yellow with the elephants and here's one i made with some pink fabric in the sweet pea fabric it also turned out great now for this one i used a scallop stitch for the top stitching it's not my favorite but it's not the worst either the only reason why i really don't like the scalloped edge is because it's very inconsistent had i used my walking foot when i did this blanket i don't think i would have had such a problem but i don't think baby or mother will care now in my goody box i'm also going to include six of my burp cloths four matching bibs and two pacifier clips now i'll go ahead and i'll link my video for my pacifier clips and my bibs at the end of this video and i also have a few other things i'm going to throw in here but that's going to be a surprise she's probably watching this video now just like the burp cloths any parent could never have enough receiving blankets it always seems there's at least four or five in the laundry going from all those diaper blowouts and spit up this project was so fast and easy and i just know my friend is going to love it so ryan i'll be putting these in the mail as soon as this water goes down now i've had a few
