[Music] hi everyone I've got some great tricks for you today I want to make sure you're not using the hand needle and thread there's so many ways to do your hands that are much easier and much quicker for you to be able to do let's start today with just timing a pair of slacks or a skirt it's called a blind hem it means it looks like we've done it by hand probably better but it doesn't show on the outside then slacks come to mind our slacks come to mind you'll see it in all kinds of clothing so being able to do a blind hem has lots and lots of fun there's lots of goodies that you can get for your sewing machine a different presser feet that really make it really your job so much easier you don't have only one knife in your kitchen look at your utility drawer you've got spatulas you've got knives you've got rolling pins you've got all sorts of stuff that makes it easier the number one thing you're going to want to get yourself is called a blind hem foot and what a blind hem foot does is it's got a little groove for us to let our guide go along so that nothing will show on the other side of your fabric so it's really a cool presser foot look in your drawer your instruction book see if you have one if not see if you like it well enough to go buy one so first thing I'm going to do is to snap off my presser foot here and they usually snap off you could have an older stowing machine it might unscrew by your shape here so I wanted to put on the presser foot I want okay so snap on my presser foot bring my fabric up match my thread so that's the important thing is to match your thread now the scariest thing about a hem and blind hemming is to remember how to bold it so we're gonna do it so I can see that it's worth your time watching and that you're gonna want to learn this and then I'll show you again and again and how to fold it so it will be ingrained in your memory it'll be really really really nice and you'll use it all the time so the first thing I want to do is to take my fabric of whatever I'm using and I want to turn up my hat I'm going to place my pins about 1/2 an inch in half an inch in the ear all the way around your head now depending on how much body the length of your skirt needs you know you do need somebody to hold your slacks down that's the reason why the hems are generally 2 inches so kind of go by what happened if you're taking off meaning if you're humming up a pair of men's pants and it's about an inch and a half that's probably what it's going to require you to do again so give yourself an inch and a half on a hem line here to be able to do it so at this point what I have done is taken my pair of slacks and I'm using this fabric paper excuse me because I wanted you to see a contrast of the red and the white meaning the red is my jet my skirt the red is my pants so I have turned up my hem on the bottom of my pants see Wow is one the trip pumps so I'm again going to place pins I'd suggest you grab a sheet of paper and follow along with me or replay this and follow along with me because I would like each of you to have a little sheet of paper in your sewing closet area wherever you always sew and have it tucked underneath there on how to do this because I get questions all the time how do I fold that again so then you'll have it right there for you so you following me on my slacks I'm either same as I'm doing my paper I have folded up my hand the amount I want now let's do it and then we'll come back and show you why I folded it the way I did the trick here is you have the top part of your hem which is what you all see then you're going to have the underside of the house which is under here right so this would this is the underside of the hem this is the top side of the hem on the underside of the hem I'm going to take my garment I'm going to let everything drop and I let it drop about 1/4 of an inch just enough of a little seam here for me to be able to stitch so I can stitch and I'm actually stitching on the under side of the hem we're gonna go over this again on paper as soon as you see how cool it is so there's my hem you're flying hemming stitch here's your fabric here it is I want to fold it so that I am letting my skirt drop I'm letting my stitch does 4 straight stitches and then it doesn't zigzag I do four straight stitches and then a zig zag so that's how my hand is so what I'm doing is I'm sewing on the under side of the hem I can't possibly grab my skirt so it can't possibly show let's try it so I reached to the underside of my hem and I let everything else drop a quarter of an inch I'm going to put it in now the coolest thing about my guide my blind hem foot is there's a guide right here that is allowing me to follow the fold so I'm going to follow this fold we just like this right along this bulb and I'm going to stitch so you're going to try a little bit we're going to stitch and you get my propers dip jump call the blind hem stitch it should look like a straight stitch reach over straight stitch reach over string fits reach over you'll have to play for a minute to decide how light you want it to be we're gonna stitch and it's going to reach over watch I'm going to slow way down I'm going to use my speed control to slow way down and I'm sewing straight straight straight straight reach over straight between turnover now at this point I usually try to do it on sample but you usually try it off a couple pieces reach the neck here make sure I can't see my hum now I can see my own because I made it wider so you could see what's wrong now I'm just going to take my zigzag and I'm going to arrow it down just a tinge so then it's those at the rest of the way I'm using my guy right against my phone and what you're looking for is a beautiful hem that looks like it's been done by hand but look I reach it's caught the zigzag on the stitches reaches over and catches the fabric just that minut amount and nothing nothing shows on this side it's incredible in it just incredible so all I did was straight stitch reached over straight stitch reached over the Machine does all the work for you the foot is a guide a guide that just helps you stay the same all the way along and make sure that nothing nothing at all shows on this side you can have anything anything at all and it will show it will work beautifully there's different hemming techniques that we that you will be learning over over your time but blind hem is the most common one that you have to do that nobody wants to do so how many times do you catch yourself that you're wearing your slacks a little bit longer than you wanted to or wearing your skirt a little bit longer because you didn't want to bother to do the humming so that's how simple it is now I hope I you have you convinced that you want to learn this technique so let's go back over how to fold it one more time if I'm turning up my hat the red is my skirt my husband slacks following me there is my town I am grabbing on to the underside of the hem which is underneath here and I'm letting everything drop a quarter of an inch what that's been allowed me to do is the stitch stitch stitch Reach you see how I did it with a magic marker just so it was shown a little bit better for you to understand what I'm doing so it's easy to do a hem and it's foolproof and it will never fall out and it looks like you did it by hand NAT your thread as much as you can there is some invisible threads that you can use just use the highest quality you have so invisible thread sometimes I've had to use on like a microfiber fabric that was my husband's pants because the King showed through but other than that my regular thread with my blind hem stitch along with my blind hem presser foot does the job perfectly every single time I really hope you give it a try test it out [Music]
