How to Set up Your Planner For The School Year: Back to School

hey guys welcome back to my channel if this is your first video hi i'm elena and this is the organized money where we talk about planning life and managing money in today's video we're going to be talking about how to set up your planner for school so whether you are a parent that you're preparing for your kids to go back to school or you are a student yourself you should be able to use these tips and apply them to your planning organization so let's go ahead and get started first thing let's talk about supplies i do have my happy planner big here this is not the planner that i am currently using but that's only because i don't have all of the things that i need to set up my planner for my kids to go back to school so we're just going to be doing a mock setup in this planner but this is the exact process that i use in my personal planner to set up my planner for my kids going back to school and this is also very similar to what i did when i was in college myself along with my happy planner big i also have this planner pouch in my planner pouch i keep a red pen and a black pen and these are the paper mate inkjoy 0.7 pens i also keep highlighters and i have some white out whenever i'm doing my planner setup these are the only tools that i use and then if i want to add stickers that just happens later on but when it comes down to the organization of my planner this is all that i need so a majority of my planning happens on the monthly spread the monthly spread is where i like to have an overview of everything that's going on for the school year and so this is the main place where a majority of the planning is happening first thing that i like to do is to break down all of the classes and assign a specific color to those classes i'm going to be using the big highlighters in order to do this this is the big bright liner grip highlighters so i like to assign a specific color to every single class so in this case i have yellow pink purple and blue yellow will be science pink will be math purple will be english and blue will be social studies i like to keep this color system on my sidebar then that way i have access to my key at all times and i remember what colors are associated with which class this key is very helpful because i know for a fact that if i did not have it i would definitely use the wrong color for a particular class the next thing that i would do is pick a separate color to add any life events so in this case we're going to go with the gray mild liner in order to signal any life events the reason that i like to add life events to the planner as well is because it could interrupt our study schedule the project schedule and all of the different things that we have to do for school and so if i know that we have an event coming up or something coming up for the family then it helps me to plan around the school things much much easier so once i have my highlighter system set up the next thing that i can do is add in any reading assignments any exams any projects throughout the course of the month on my planner the great thing about having this highlighter system is that i no longer have to write out the subject and i get to save space within my planner so now i can just write read chapter four and if it's in yellow then i automatically know that it's for science i don't have to write out that it's for science class and take up much valuable space the color system automatically helps you know when exams are coming up what you have to read and what projects are going to be due and when they are due another thing that i like to do if we have a really big paper or a really big project that's coming up is actually highlight the box highlighting the box on my monthly calendar lets me know that it's something big that i really need to pay attention to and it's probably going to take me more days to complete than just one day so if i had a term paper or my kid had a really big science project then i would more than likely highlight the entire box so that it instantly causes me to pay attention to that event in this way i know we won't be trying to complete the entire term paper the day before and the other thing that i will do to ensure that i'm able to stay on top of everything is right in my life events so if we're planning on eating out or going to a birthday party are going out of town these are things that could affect the assignments in the reading and all of the different things that we have to do for school when we do the homework so i want to add them all to my planner so that i am able to plan around those things and make sure that i'm giving myself time to complete the different assignments that we need to do for school another space where i will plan different things in my planner is on the at a glance page in my yearly overview this is another place where i am going to be able to plan ahead and schedule different things as they're coming up so here i might highlight when they have breaks from school when they're going to be out of school when they have big projects when we have life events that may also take them out of school this allows me to prepare and notify teachers if we're going to be taking them out of school or get ourselves prepared if they will be out of school i also signal big projects especially if it's a really big project that's going to take us a couple of weeks to complete i will put it on this page as well but i mainly use this page in order to mark off any breaks that they have from school because i will quickly check this page before i plan the next month and like i said this is where a majority of the big planning is taking place because when it comes down to my weekly spread i'm mainly just keeping track of all of the to do's and the homework assignments on this page i break down the details so this is when i'm getting into what subject i was studying what topic it was on and how long i was actually studying that particular subject this lets me know how much time and effort i have put into a particular class and if there's a particular subject or topic that i should be studying more or focusing on more as the week goes on because i didn't have a chance to look at it all week still doing the exact same highlighting system but basically just breaking down the subject what was the specifics of that particular topic and how long i was studying that particular topic so guys these are my tips for setting up your planner for the school year i do this exact same system that i do for my kids i did it for myself when i was in school i like to keep it really simple i don't use any stickers but it really does help us stay on top of my planning and the organization of all of their classes and if i want to make it pretty later on i will go back in and add little icon stickers throughout the spread but for the most part this is all that i need to do in order to stay on top of everything so i hope that this
