this time of year the sun rises at 4 25 in the morning it's an insane time for the sun to come up and by 8 o'clock in the morning you're well into the 30s in season three solo prospector rick fishers traveled 200 kilometers from the nearest town into the heart of australia's largest desert just two weeks earlier a first-time prospector had been found dead from heat stroke after a wave of 40 degree temperatures scratching away for that every day is getting hotter it's getting harder needing just three and a half ounces to finish his season what the hell am i doing out here rick is testing his limits in temperatures as extreme as the sahara desert the heat has really snuck up on me now it's wearing me down really quick i don't know how much longer i can do detecting over this sort of ground [Music] all this for 25 worth of gold i've got to make a new plan this just isn't worth it to survive the incredible temperatures of the australian outback you'll need a large quantity of drinking water don't wait until you feel thirsty to drink and it's vital to sip small amounts as often as possible [Music] three years ago the victoria diggers spent almost a million dollars to buy this 210 hectare block of land but the mining licence to dig and detect german gully still hasn't come through after three years of processing the duo had no choice but to return to charlie's gully desperate to find gold along the edges of where they dug last year to pay for mounting fuel and permit costs they need the edges to consistently deliver at least five thousand dollars of gold a week just to cover fuel and expenses it costs us several thousands of dollars a week that's only just our running costs let alone all the extras that we put forward with surveys assessments and everything else that comes along with having to do the job generally when we're digging uh we rely on half an ounce of gold a day which is about a thousand bucks to cover our costs and give us a little bit in the process neville and mick are facing a huge loss i can't believe he wouldn't have heard it fall off the truck a critical component of the victoria diggers long-awaited wash plant was delivered to the local haulage yard overnight all right we'll get this wash plant down the bottom then we better sort this out because no sense talking to the truckee the twin cell jigs are missing in transit from queensland the twin cell jig a vital component that separates the fine gold has fallen off the back of the delivery truck it's a huge bit of the bloody wash plant that's actually missing one of our main processing components i can't believe it i really can't it was quite clear that the driver didn't want to discuss it at all well if you put the components of a wash plant on a truck it's got to be secure wherever it landed traveling at a speed of 100 kilometers per hour it will be a write-off it's just a headache we don't bloody need no that's right we have to get it up and running because it can't just sit here and cost us money a fifteen thousand dollar loss two weeks into their season is a huge blow without a replacement neville and mick's 250 000 wash plant is useless surviving in the australian wilderness requires preparation experience and common sense wear thick pants and ensure you have boots that can protect your feet and ankles snakes sense vibrations in the ground so making noise is a great deterrent don't corner snakes or try to interact with them during season four in the east of the country the victoria diggers neville perry and mick clark came face to face with an eastern brown snake john a brown snake keep back mate keep back you'll be angry fell down in the hole with me the eastern brown is the second most venomous land snake on earth after australia's inland taipan he's getting a bit angry but i've got to keep him out we just need to control him and gently move him out of our work zone this species grows up to 2.4 metres long and has killed at least nine people in the past 20 years a four or five foot brown snake very venomous if you don't get to a hospital within half an hour or so you're dead it's a decent size so i just gotta keep working that bucket to keep him from sliding away their heart's still racing normally they hear a bit of noise and just go the other way snakes can't be killed in australia unless they pose an immediate threat to life mick herds it with the bucket while neville uses his experience with snakes to try to remove it we'll just move him away very gently and we'll put him in the bush and let him go on his merry way after almost 30 years of mining in the victorian wilderness neville has learned techniques to safely handle snakes not a process anyone should attempt without training just so he's away and then we'll just let him be on his merry way out in the bush and away from our work zone that type of situation it is deadly oh for sure you know most people would say oh look at that idiot look at that picking it up moving it on but as you know always well controlled yes and just moved out of our site there are many myths when it comes to snakes and their bites because snake venom travels through the lymphatic system a pressure immobilization bandage on the bite is the best option as tourniquets can stop blood flow [Music] and do not try to suck the venom out of the wound in season five marcus and younger brother lyndon left their families behind in the overcrowded goldfields of kalgoorlie and travelled over 1 600 kilometers to prospect in the isolated grounds of the tropical north to avoid the searing heat of the tropics the brothers continue into the night hunting gold in their vehicles headlights joined by some nocturnal locals so how cool is this spot he's not bad eh cliff face right here these bats going in and out look at all these toads man look at the kangaroos there man yeah finally after two hours without a signal [Music] i got something here that sounds pretty lovely yeah [Music] hey car light just went off that battery can't be flat man this is bad i don't want to get stuck out here calm down ah don't tell me to calm down no way in the world you know we've only got we're gonna get three bottles of water and a couple of muesli bars just turn the key man i'm turning the key i'm turning the key can you see me turning it a flat battery is a common occurrence but it can be life-threatening in the remote outback we're 100k's out of town yeah no man hey our people survived in this country for thousands of years all right so jump out out of the car relax and we'll make a fire start grabbing some wood we'll make a fly over here somewhere and then after i want you to open that bonnet all right i've got a plan [Applause] because now in the world i want to be stuck out here that's right brother the fire will keep wild animals at a distance including australia's apex land predator hungry packs of wild dogs take it over there oh man she's heavy it put her down there bro now let's dig a whole big hole around about here what we're going to do is take some of that hot sand a little closer to the fire we're going to put around there and the heat from that is going to charge up this battery all right whatever it takes hey i'm still a bit skeptical about this it's all right bro it's going to work all right let me get this swag you working hard it's gonna be a long night if the brothers don't resolve the battery issue by morning it's a two-day walk to help with water supplies dangerously low all right let's give it a go come on baby please [Music] [Applause] that's it [Music] come on man let's get out of here go get this goal we got everything yeah let's go remote four-wheel drive travel requires specialized equipment and extra preparation for the rugged outback getting your vehicle bogged is a constant threat in this environment always carry rescue equipment and at least two spare tyres hello okay that's good that's good news finally we've got a little bit of movement all right see alex bye how you got there yeah that was alex nick yes good news the pair have hired mining agent alex to oversee the application while they continue to dig we got a side meeting in about a week all right yeah i can't wait this should be the last step before securing their licence we've been waiting for a long time over 10 months for a site meeting we've now got that side meeting it's an exciting time but a nervous time people can just throw a curveball at you that you just weren't expecting we deal with it and fingers crossed it's been three years over a hundred thousand dollars in costs and hundreds of hours of paperwork leading up to this meeting their entire season and dream of mining the historic german gully hangs in the the balance has only just started and they've hit a major roadblock no only two small areas i've got the plan in the car i've got it in here because german gully is one of a number of mine sites from the gold rush of the 1850s and 60s a temporary listing has been put over the site until further assessment is made of its historic significance until then there's a halt to all digging i don't understand why it's taken us this long to find that out no exactly right the officials are charged with protecting and conserving places of historic importance so they won't progress the application to mine without an additional and costly formal assessment of the site it's a big curve ball that's been just thrown at us right here and now you got the passion to get into it and you just keep fighting this red tape the victoria diggers dream of mining german gully won't be approved any time soon the pair are now left with their back up plan not only will charlie's gully have to see them through the rest of their season it will also need to cover these new costs but their day is about to go from bad to disastrous one of the officials now informs mick and neville that their existing prospecting license has been cancelled and amalgamated into their pending mining licence we specifically wanted that cleared to still be able to work on top of every other conceivable thing that there's another one just thrown in it's like me renting you a house and saying you can rent it but you can't live it we've now been told to stop work and that really surprised me we just need to sort this otherwise we're not doing nothing their over one hundred thousand dollar outlay spent on processing the mining applications could be lost if they're unable to reverse this decision we've just been shut down pretty much come to a total standstill [Music] with their dream in tatters mick and nev desperately need their prospecting license reinstated so they have at least a small patch of ground to dig mate i'm just going to check emails uh in case i've got something that's come through gonna have to check yours as well the only the only one i've got here mate is from alex okay from our original from our side meeting the other day all right um there is no responses to the emails we've seen so we've checked our emails and things and we're frantically now trying to make phone calls before five in the evening so that we can get get a result we've sent emails every day and nobody's given us a response at all yeah all right mate i so much appreciate it all right good on you i just called tenements down in melbourne and um hopefully things can be in motion and we can get an approval early next week to start and recommence work
