this video I'm gonna replace this front door with this door right here and we're gonna do it right now so this isn't my house it's actually John's if you remember him from the laminate floor install and he needs a new door so what what happened done well so basically about two weeks ago we had this major windstorm and we had our screen door on here and it wasn't the wind was coming this way and it basically was kept opening up the store in the middle of the night and the door actually slammed bang bang bang and knocked off this rail here which Matt will hopefully be putting on later and so anyways it also ripped out all this stuff did a lot of damage so we decided we might as well put on a new door so before we do anything I want to measure to make sure we got the right door measure the height I'm gonna go to the floor here and then you go up this way this trim right here is three-quarters of an inch thick and then it's also going to drop on the bottom because I'm sitting on the finished floor out here so this is gonna be I'm gonna say roughly the rough opening is probably gonna be about eighty one and a half so the door needs to be smaller than that and close to that and then here same thing the trim or the the jamb is 3/4 of an inch thick so we're gonna guesstimate it being about right here so it's probably gonna be about 31 and or sorry 37 and 3/4 the door is about 37 and a half so that's perfect and then the height 81 and a half so it's perfect gives us like a quarter inch and that openings probably gonna be bigger anyways is just an estimate also make sure you get the right swing of door so the handles on the left from the outside this is called a right hand in swing which means from your chest you grab the door handle and then swing in with your right hand so if you look at this one that one is a right hand swing so we're all set if you look at the packaging to it'll say so there's a 36 80 that's the size of the actual door this is the rough opening size which is what we have about as a jam which means the thickness of the wall so this is a 2x4 constructed wall so with the sheathing on the outside and the sheetrock on the inside for 9/16 that's what we want it was a 2 by 6 door beep negative that then right there right hand in swing yeah so we're good very good so here's the plan we're gonna take the trim off the outside as you can see this trim on this door is different it's smaller so you would have a gap here so we're gonna reuse this trim we'll just paint it and fill the holes and stuff but basically what we're gonna do is take off this trim on the outside take off the trim on the inside then I'll take the door off the hinges get rid of that and then I'll take the frame of the door out and then I'll clean up down here make sure there's no rod or anything we'll seal that up nice and take the new door and with the trim on it on the outside put it in nail on each corner of the door get it level and plumb and then a to the studs with screws on the jamb and on the hinges and then I'll take the trim off of here that's that on the actual door and I'll replace it with this trim and then I'll reinstall the trim on the inside and for that I'll insulate it and that's it that's basically what real that makes sense yep okay now we can start ripping this outside trim off I'm not worried about the door fallen or anything because it is I noticed that it is attached on the inside here so that shouldn't be a problem if I take this off so I'm gonna go around all right here and just this is cracked where the caulking was but I'm gonna go around and cut it and make sure that all this is cut so that I can take the trim off without like ripping pieces of signing off it's gonna be careful cuz I am gonna reuse this trim like I said I'm just gonna go nice and slow so I don't tear anything off here all right okay well phone I'll replace that with insulation there you can see how it's attached here they're shims in here so there's nails going from the jam into the two by fours it's gonna take all these nails out they have the trim ready to go here's a here's a quick little tip so that you don't mess up trim use a couple shims and you take these nails out okay I can do that with the other side hey she's number two at least there's not a ton of spray foam in there I was actually thinking about doing a video on why not to use spray foam I guess I could do it right now so spray foam is a relatively new thing right and I worked on so many houses and I've had to fix so many things that have spray foam why do I see so much spray foam because it doesn't work it just makes things worse please don't use spray foam use insulation talking whatever you can or if you're gonna use spray foam don't load spray foam into a small crack because it's called expandable foam for a reason that's all that's my rant I want to be super careful with this one up here hopefully it comes off easy I'm not really sure this looks like two separate pieces but they think they're attached okay so there's a piece of metal up here to help fill this up which is good it's great that that's there just want to get all the paint off there so don't stick to it and rip the siding off there we go nice perfect make sure all nails are out that didn't come out looks like a little water got in here but there's no there's no rock so that's good that's not insulation it shouldn't be in there there now we can go inside and take the trim off the inside same thing on the inside we're gonna reuse this trim so I want to be very careful taking it off take a knife and same thing just cut the caulking in the paint and everything this piece is gonna come off real easy now what's in there John you wanna explain this no that's uh I did that don't do that don't do that if the door goes back in in the same place that's what I'm hoping then the trim should cover up any of this non painted surface it doesn't work out like that every time but I'm hoping it will you don't cut this this is what happens and then you got a mud that and paint it so trying to avoid that all right these came off easily you can reuse them saving money saving time oh so basically the door closer was right here and when the screen door whipped open it ripped this jam right out and then you don't have anything for this to seal to suppose you could hack it up a little bit and put a nail here and deal with it but then again you have nothing to press against with the door so it needed to be replaced now I'm just gonna go along and make sure nothing's sticking out like these staples if it's a tight rough opening these might hit and give you a trouble you can either bang them in or you can pull them out with some pliers and then make sure all the cardboard is off of us so underneath here there's cardboard so I'm I peeled it off and now I'm just gonna hold it my foot cool and then these I'm gonna leave on until the last minute you know make it easier to move the door same with the there's something in here that holds the door shut and there's a kind of a nut on the other side that you have to unscrew but we'll wait on that before I take the store out I have my other door all set all set up its measured I know it's going to go in fine I got all the staples and everything hammered in trims off on the outside on the inside I just want to make sure I can do as much as I can before I take this door out so we don't let cold air in as little cold air in as possible because it is kind of cold right now so I think I'm ready I'm gonna first take this door off to make it more manageable so here we go make sure the door is a fall see how that screw came out so easy it's because the jamb cracked right here bad news what you hit now I can take this Jam out if I had a sawzall I could run it down along the side of this but I forgot my sawzall instead I'm gonna try and find the nails there we go there's another little tip so if you're prying on this you know a nails right here you can see it well you can't pry it out you can't get a grip on the head here what you can do just grab right bar pry this out and then hold it right here and give it a whack and then hammer it right here the nail head appears the magic your little little magic trick for you [Music] [Music] clock okay humming yeah you want to take that down yep okay clock so you should just come right out yeah I should sometimes it's they're screwed in there it depends on how the last person attached look eat there we go be careful down here in case your coq10 Danny Warren there it is now I have a big hole in my house I just have clean all this up yep there's some insulation in there so that's good so when you take a door out it's a good thing to look to see how this looks this is solid there's no rot so we don't have to worry about that that's in great shape you so I'm gonna do down here is to get a nice seal on here I'm gonna pull this trim away a little bit I'm gonna try not to take it off well you know what we're just gonna take this piece right off I'm gonna cut off these little pieces here that are hanging over all right now the reason I've pulled that piece of trim off is because I want to seal this with something and that something is quick fix window window and door sealing tape some people call this ice and water as well this is just gonna make a nice seal so if water does get in there it's not gonna get into the wood and rot it out roll this out and it's gonna go up and I have it built up just a little bit there certainly advertised very well sure is a protecto wrap I don't even think that's the name of the suspect it's not oh yeah it is okay the super careful with this stuff is it really is sticky and if it sticks to itself you're not getting it off doesn't have to be perfect looks pretty good I'm gonna cut it right here fold it over that's a hit [Applause] of the square right here inside and some people do this around the entire door or window whatever you're doing I don't I don't think it's necessary some people might disagree with that but that's all I do right there all right so now we're gonna grab the door and we're gonna dry fit it which means we're not gonna nail it in or anything and we're gonna just make sure it fits and it looks good do that right now ready now I'm gonna take the handles off I'm just gonna lift it up and throw it in all right on the inside I mean it looks good everything looks about the same as it was before this is nice and even the trim will go back on nice so now we can take it out and put it in for real leave this up here for now so I'm gonna use 100% clear silicone and I'm gonna silicone all this right here again for water purposes so cut this okay I'm just gonna load this right up so the combination of the protecto wrap and this silicone should give a nice water and air tight seal I basically use an entire tube anytime I put a door in we go that is a tube now don't step in it before I put the silicon down I probably should have checked for level right here but we can check it on this floor I guess so that looks pretty good and the floor looks a little bent but it looks pretty level so that's a good sign if it was way out I would know that I'm gonna have to jam a bunch of shims in there but we're not gonna have to do that so now I can take this thing off that I was talking about some of them you have to twist off completely and then some of them you just do a quarter turn but this one looks like it unscrews all the way there we go and then just leave that other piece in there so it holds the door from swinging open you don't want to forget this though I've done that before now we can take the door we read in place okay now John's gonna run in and he's gonna look at the gap in between the sheetrock and the door and make sure it's even on each side so we can put the door in the opening as even as possible looks good an edge on it looks good yes all right right this is dead level right here so I know that I don't need to shim that up at all so what I want to do is I'm gonna take a nail this is an 8 penny nail and I'm gonna put it temporarily into this trim on the bottom of the hinge side I'm not gonna go all the way in I'm just gonna get it so it holds the door in place just like that and now I can take my level check this it says that it needs to go that way a little bit so I'm gonna hold that plum and I'm gonna put a nail right up here cool remember those are temporary because we're gonna put the old trim back on that side looks great at this point you should be able to open the door just be careful it's not attached all the way pry this open okay just to be safe cuz it looks like the house is kind of bows in a little bit so I'm gonna put a nail in the middle two on each side now I'm gonna cut up some shims these are actually cedar shakes they're shingles but they work awesome for shims because they have a taper to them as you can see all right now on the inside what you want to look for and as you attach this you want to make sure the reveal looks good the reveal is the gap between the door and the jamb so if you look it's nice and even all the way around don't worry about the hinge side and if you look down here the gap is a little bigger down here and that could be due to the way the door is built but we can also close that up a little bit you want to attach the hinge side first over here put some shims on around the same area as the hinges because that's where we're gonna put the screws make sure the sheetrock is cut back to the studs it's one problem some people have is if the shim isn't sitting against the stud it's not gonna do anything just I'm gonna cut this back end of a shim in here and then we want to put it tight but not too tight we don't want to push the door over that should be good right there and this up and they leave one screw out of here so that you can install the screw and actually these are gray they come with ones that are like this but these are three inch and they only give you I think two inch so I'm gonna use this one if you can deal with this being a different color it's a better idea suck that tight do the bottom hinge the same way for the bottom I'm gonna put some shims on this side too and I'm gonna see if I can close this gap up a little bit now if I take a shim on this side and hopefully you can watch this side maybe the gap will close up a little bit and if it doesn't it's probably the way the door is made let's see anything yep much better okay so now we can pass this one right here when you're hammering these in if you use the hammer you might not want to but if you're tapping them in make sure you're not tapping that trim on the outside off that before tail [Music] instead of having a hole right here what I like to do is pull this back put a super-secret screw right here watch your fingers not you just in general suck it in a little bit yeah that's it check the reveal reveal is perfect so I shim didn't screwed the the middle here like that and we did the top checking the reveal the whole way making sure it's even and on the bottom now another good thing to check as you're doing this as you're installing the door just so things aren't way off you can take your trim and line it up where it was before and make sure that it's gonna work with this and for this door this piece is perfect but it looks like the door is a little bit smaller than the last one that was here usually they're pretty close but this one over here you can see if you look at here that's not gonna cover now and that had to be fixed anyways but it's good to get it as close as you can and it just is what it is not all doors are exactly the same they're pretty close just keep that in mind as you're attaching this now I'm gonna install the doorknob so this thing doesn't swing open not really gonna explain how to install the doorknob although I do have a video on that if you wanted to check it out maybe I'll leave it blinkin put his link right down below yeah put a link down below deadbolt so if you look down here you can see there's daylight in this crack and that's totally normal they give you these pads and this is to seal that up so they go in like this you peel this piece right here and then take this just sneak this right in there Oh backwards just like that and that pushes the weatherstripping out a little bit now when you close it nice and take the seal so you do that same thing on the other side all right doors all secure I'm going to take the the temporary trim off and I'm going to put the old trim back on that comes up it easy reinstall trim on the outside everything should go right back into place Oh too good hope so well we put the trim on the inside on I'm gonna grab fiberglass insulation and tuck it in every every spot here that's empty not foam no foam learn my lesson I just take a little pry bar tuck it in you don't want a GM packet because you actually want some air space with the insulation cuz that helps it to work perfect now you can go around the whole door and do that same thing yeah turn back on the inside [Music] [Music] all right that's it now all John has to do is talk in around the trim paint it fill all these nail holes paint it do the same with the inside and it's good to go put put a screen door back on mmm hope that you don't get any more wind storms and you put this back on for us thank you did so all set I'm doing the next one if you want to see more videos like this check HERE --is-- and here-ish and take a look thanks for watching
