welcome back in today's video I am going to teach you how to polish just about anything with your Dremel I believe you guys are going to learn a lot from this one so hang out with me today and let me show you a few of my secrets so you may be asking yourself why do I need to learn how to polish with my dremel well I will tell you this it's a very valuable skill to know how to do after I learned what I'm about to teach you guys I have I've been using it ever since on all kinds of projects and you know metal is not the only thing that you can polish people polish fiberglass they polish plastic and other things like that in order to do this we need a dremel of course so I am using the dremel 3000 with the flex shaft attachment okay and here are the accessories that we are going to be using the first one is the 401 mandrel from Dremel you see the screw right there on the end of it now what this does it goes right into the end of the felt tip pads right here and you want to stick it in there and just twist it in there are obviously different types of felt and cotton and different types of buffing wheels that you can use on this but for the sake of the video I'm just sticking with these two because it's the same principle the next thing we need is some compound this compound will be applied to the buffing felt pads now here is some red oxide buffing compound that came with a dremel accessory kit I bought but this is not the only compound that we are going to be using here is some fine green compound and by the way these are also called jewellers Rouge and you can get different grits and basically what this stuff is is lock a slimy it's like a liquid sandpaper there we go his like liquid sandpaper and these are made to achieve those fine polished results that you cannot achieve with regular sandpaper alone another compound we will be using is the Flitz metal polish this stuff right here is pretty popular and I will tell you there is a big debate on line which is better the Flitz or the green compound well I'm going to test them both from what we have right here okay listen to me now before we start we need to take the appropriate safety measures get you some fog proof safety glasses fog proof true story one time I had this little felt pad right here I was running and I already speed more than I should have this flew off and hit me right underneath the eye and I didn't even have my glasses it didn't feel too good so guys please wear your glasses the second thing we need is a dust mask because we have some fine particles that's going to be released in the air and even though you really don't feel it that stuff does get in your lungs you don't want that so this fits nice and snug and goes around your ears and this a little band right here you just press around your nose it's comfortable I love this I like it better than the other traditional dust masks we're going to take this mandrel right here and screw right into the end of here make sure that's on nice and taut the next thing we're going to do is take our dremel flex shaft right here if you don't have a flex shaft that's alright this is just what I am choosing to use we're gonna put it right in the end of there and lock it down I will be using the a vise for this demonstration I'm gonna put my dremel flex shaft right in there I'm gonna turn this right here until it gets tight and here comes the fun part we're gonna polish some of these coins right here so I can demonstrate to you okay and what I'm gonna do here is take a piece of painters tape and cover up half with it okay since this will be getting a little warm I will be using some gloves right here okay we're going to turn this on and apply the red oxide compounds listen to me we did not need to run this at full speed it needs to be very low most people I see recommend and running theirs around I'd say 5000 rpm so I'm gonna turn it on here and what we're gonna do we're gonna stick this here and watch how it colors up see that so I add a little bit more I don't want to just overload it but I wanted to be pretty decent okay okay now we're going to take our coin right here and start buffing [Music] okay guys look at that I can already tell a difference between both sides okay guys we're going to take this a step farther I'm gonna put some green compound on here now if this is really scratched up I would have been taking some sandpaper to it as well okay now I'm gonna share a secret with you guys that not a lot of people know about listen to what I'm saying here I am going to clean this felt pad I'm gonna take my Leatherman right here my multi-tool and you see the little sawtooth blade now we're gonna turn this on and I'm gonna lightly just put the blade right here and this is going to clean our felt pad okay be very very careful when you do this don't turn it on low and watch this already cleaning it okay now that got a lot of the burnt compound off and even though it's still dark it's ready to be used now I want to apply some of this green polish right here and this is really going to give it some shine okay and let's hit it one more time oh yeah this is looking fantastic hey guys do you see the green smudge on there that's when you know that you put too much on we just want to back off just a little bit and clean it I'm going to spray this with some alcohol some dish soap would be alright as well clean it off there Wow look at that you see that line right there I can see the reflection in there that's near a perfect mirror polish I could have spent some more time on that and made it a little bit better but Wow okay now we are going to be using the bigger felt pad just because I'm going to use the Flitz polish to see how well this does and we're going to do this pinning right here from 1973 and we're gonna do the head side the way I'm going to do this is dab some on the paper towel right here okay now we're going to turn it on and do the same thing [Music] Wow you see that already [Music] Wow I'm loving this [Applause] [Music] that Flitz did phenomenal I know these are two different types of material and I didn't do the whole polishing on this piece and just a half that I'm feeling about the Flitz perform better than the compound Rouge we are going to do one more example this is a copper plate that I got at a local acid etching class at this jewelry shop here in my hometown and we're going to do this lot 2/4 we're going to cover one side up and polish one side of it only that way we can see the contrast in it Wow I can see my reflection right there let's take it off I'm very impressed with the results we got by polishing these I do feel the compounds we use goddess the same effect but I think I'm preferring the Flitz just a little bit more with that being said you know guys whatever compound works for you I hope this short tutorial gave you guys a lot of confidence on how to start polishing with your dremel now obviously depending on the project that you're working on we might have used sandpaper and took it up and grit and use various different types of Rouge to you know to bump up our shine but that's a different video for a different day well guys leave me a comment below and let me know if you learned something today I appreciate you watching and be sure to subscribe and hit the bell notification
