in previous videos you hear me say that you don't need expensive tools fancy equipment or a massive workspace to make beautiful wooden rings so in this video I'm gonna show you how to make a high-end wooden ring with simple tools only no power tools just determination and some skills this bent wood ring took me about an hour and a half to make and I just used the bare-bones tooling setup which probably cost me under sixty pounds I want to show you that you can make you know really high-end valuable wooden rings without a massive investment in tooling and so I hope that this video helps this tutorial is part of my online course called next-level wooden rings so if you'd like this tutorial you'd like to find out more I've actually put together a free guide for you no nonsense guide to making wooden rings with simple tools if you'd like a copy of the free guide then follow the link in the description and let me know where to send it and I'll ping it over to your email straight away in the guide of just on a breakdown of this tutorial some help some tips and advice and a bit about my story some bits about ring sizing a bare-bones tooling setup of where to get your supplies as well as of course information about my online course next level wooden rings so like I said before follow the link in the description let me know what to send it and it's yours for free so lot further ado let's get on with the tutorial I'll show you how to make a high-end wooden ring with simple tools the easiest way to make a wooden ring with simple tools is to use the bent wood method this involves bending a thin piece of wood around a former to create a durable and beautiful ring for this project I used a tropical olive wood veneer which is a beautiful exotic wood and for all of my rings I always use a 0.6 mils thick wood veneer and the first step in making a bed word ring is to prepare the wood so to do this I used a sharp craft knife on a metal to cut a 10 mil wide strip of veneer and this strip would eventually become a 6 mil wide bentwood ring before bending the wood I used a 240 grit sandpaper to tape a one edge of the VM veneer down to a paper-thin point to make the wood more pliable I soaked it in hot water for 30 minutes in a pan with the wood nice and bendy I rolled it around a wide socket and secured it in place with masking tape this trains the wood to stay bent rather than reverting back to his original straight form I allowed the wood to dry like this for about 24 hours but I will admit that sometimes I use a hair dryer to speed this process up when the wood was dry I just took the masking tape off and I was left with this beautiful swirl of tropical olive wood veneer so it was time for the next stage which was the glue up I selected a smaller socket this one was about the width of a size 11.5 ring and I needed to determine how much wood I need to wrap around the socket three times to do this I did a test wrap first and when I have three layers of wood around the socket I used the scissors to cut away the excess Vidia this left me with the exact length of wood I needed to form three layers of wood for my right then before moving on to the glue up I just sanded down the edge I just cut so it was paper thin follow glue up I used Loctite super glue and cocktail sticks the aim of the glue up is to glue the wood around itself around a former without gluing the wood to the 4-month if that makes sense so it seems like everybody has a different way of doing this but this is my method and it's the method that I found gives me the most consistent results so I did my glue up section at a time by applying a few drops of super glue and then spreading them out with a cocktail stick so I was able to stick down sort of three or four centimeters at a time of the wood veneer I repeated this gradual glue up until I'd formed my rough bent wood ring ensuring each wrap or layer was tight and that I didn't glue the ring to the former to avoid gluing my glove to the ring on the final flap I just pressed down the last bit with a cocktail stick and allowed it to cure which turned out really well the next step in the process was shaping the ring so I started out by flattening down the edges of the ring by sanding them in a figure of eight motion on a piece of sandpaper on the table and this just helps to get a nice flat even edge on the ring and I did this on the first side and then flipped it over and just repeated sanding until the ring was about six mil wide when the ring was the desired width I moved on to the sanding each face of the Ring with a range of sand papers from 240 grit at the 600 grit and I also used the sand paper to put a taper on the inside and outside edges until I was eventually left with a really nice shaped bent wood ring ready for finishing before applying a finish I needed to clean out the grain of the wood so I just used some surgical spirit and a paintbrush and just give it a once-over so it was ready to apply a finish to finish the ring I use the CA glue or super glue finish using the Loctite super glue I chose the CA finish because it's durable it enhances the aesthetics of the wood grain and it doesn't require any special tools to polish so to apply the finish I squeezed out a few droplets from the nozzle of the bottle and then use the cocktail stick to spread them out and I did this for 8 layers on each surface of the Ring including the outer edges and in between layers or coats I used them activator spray and this just helps the glue to cure quicker and helps to avoid that blooming or bubbling or white spots I'd say the only bad bit about see a finish is that it does take a bit of practice but by the time I was done applying my 8 layers to each face I was left with this rough looking ring but that was ready then to polish so to polish I used the range of sand papers from 240 grit wet and dry up to a 1200 grit wet and dry and then because I was doing this by hand I used a micro mesh micro mesh to bring out a final shine so I used up to a 12 thousand grit micro mesh now the polishing process this actually took me about 40 minutes all in all from start to finish but I just used progressively finer grits of sandpaper to send every surface of the ring and the goal was really to eliminate any low spots and just leave the ring nice and smooth this process can be sped up considerably using a lathe but I wanted to show in this video that you don't need any fancy tools to make a beautiful bed with ring so I did everything by hand and I just went through progressively finer grits of sandpaper and eventually moved up to the micro mesh when you do this by hand at first it feels like nothing's happening but as you work through progressively finer grits the ring kind of goes from this chalky appearance and just becomes more and more shiny eventually I was able to achieve this lovely sateen finish and I was pretty happy with that but I wanted to kind of bring it to an even more powerful shine and so to achieve that I used a burnishing cream now for this final stage of polishing if you can't find a burnishing cream you can use an automotive polish like this Meguiar's ultimate compound but I actually prefer a burnishing cream from chestnut products in the UK and pretty much I just applied a small amount of the benching cream to the ring and just rubbed it in and just continued to work that around the inside and the outside and the edges until it was well super shiny and that's it that's the end of the project I really enjoyed making this and I'm very happy with the way that it turned out this is the way and I used to make all of my rings my first started out and I didn't even have a lathe for the first like two years so I believe that anyone can make this ring or rings like these with a few simple tools so if you're interested in learning more then visit the link in the description to get a copy of your free guide to making
