the image stays down you can always print it back out and cut out and glue back on in that area no problem hi I'm Holly and welcome to Hollywood Studios it's a lot of work this is a workout so today we're going to do a large photo transfer onto canvas last time we did a smaller one on paper and now we're going to up the level a little bit and make a large photo transfer onto canvas just to review the photo transfer process is taking the ink off the paper and transferring it onto your surface this is a photo transfer here that I did that way and as you can see it's in sections I have to use different in parts of her face to piece it together and I'll explain why in a second but you'll see all the brush marks that are still in it and I really like that effect and you'll get the skips you might lose parts of the image and that's to me I think that's great because you kind of don't know what part of the face is not going to show up and you just kind of go with it I will switch over to the table and get you started with the process let's dig into this so I am going to to now have the image printed out in sections and I printed this out at FedEx on the self-serve printing machine now how did I break up her face into little pieces and why are there some areas and some lot so I I take the photo here I'm going to show you the actual um image that I mean what it looks like so um and I should mention this is Anime Wong the very first Chinese American actress what was I saying crazy oh so I took the photograph I took the photograph and put it into Photoshop and just used the selection tool at the 11 by 14 size that I'm going to print it out and I broke it up into pieces so I took this this area and saved it into a new file and each each layer each section is a separate document you can leave margins in but you will see you know it'll skip those areas when you take off the paper you'll you'll see that line so if you don't want to see the Line Take It Off I should also mention that I I print her face out um just so I can make sure I get her face in I might not use this that I'll use that instead just because there oh there won't be a skip because wherever you have a seam you um it might not transfer as well sometimes it'll it'll skip that area with this chemical process so I just like to have all the information there [Applause] sometimes I leave some of the margins in because I do want that white line there because I I like to show that it was pieced together okay so I know this is a different image but I'm actually going to use this one instead of the other lady because um I want to want this one on this particular canvas but I'll I'll show you the next step after this with the original this is Dean Harlow but I do want to put her on this particular canvas so let me just show you how I'm going to do the next step so I'm piecing her all together and some of the margins I'm actually going to leave in because I kind of like some wine it shows that it's a photograph but what I'm doing is I'm taking little pieces of masking tape and popping them into place just here and there on the image just enough to hold it together so when I flip it over I'm going to tape it more so I'm going to flip this over and tape it better [Music] so now it's a little more secure with more tape I'm going to flip it back over and I'm going to take these pieces off because this is the glue side and I don't want to glue these pieces of masking tape into the image um I mean you can if you want to leave the tape in if you like the look of it for some reason that's fine I've actually forgotten some of them and they still look kind of cool in the image but just take them out so we don't have any obstacles when we're trying to rub the image off I'm just using also just regular masking tape it's not special artist tape or anything it's just what you get at Home Depot or a hardware store okay you want to make sure you line your image up the way you want it and I'm just going to Mark the corners where it's going to be so when I flip it over and now I'm going to take this and set it aside and we are using golden matte medium this is my preferred brand that I like to use um I'm just going to pour it onto the canvas to smooth it out and I'm only putting it down where I'm going to put the image I don't have to put it all over the canvas we're only putting um the photo transfer part right here but I want to make sure it's covered I don't want to skip any parts because you know then you won't get all your image in but you don't want big blobs so you want to smooth this out as much as you can you have to kind of work you don't want to let this dry obviously you want to work while it's still wet so I want to put the image down [Applause] and I'm trying to line it up to my little registration marks that I made and I have to kind of jiggle it around a little bit this takes a little bit of patience but once I feel like I have it in the right spot I'm going to start smoothing it in now it's a canvas so it has it's bouncy so you know you don't want to press too hard because you'll loosen up your canvas you don't really need to press hard anyway you just need to make sure that as much paper as possible makes contact with the canvas yeah if you feel like it started drying which it did so it took too long you can quickly lift the image back up Place some more medium down there's a little piece of dirt take that out foreign for at least about an hour or two if not more and the way you can tell if it's dry is if you touch it and if it feels cold to the touch um and you might even feel the moisture it's not ready yet it has to be bone dry and room temperature when you touch it that's how you can kind of tell but this one you know and then you have to check on it to make sure nothing's peeling up or there's you know every now and then just give it a good press while it's still wet and take care of those areas right here it's peeling up it's not wanting to lay down flat that's okay I'm going to let it do that just a little I don't have to have Perfection when I'm doing this the whole process of photo transfer is about those imperfections so um but the you know you want to take care of it and make sure that you check it and keep the image in constant contact with the wet glue underneath and over here I have one that has been drawing for overnight we will swing the camera around and show you this part next Let's uh take the the paper off and I'm using a spray bottle you just have to wet there we go we want to miss it's not a dribble you can also you know use warm water as opposed to cold water [Music] the reason it's Flappy right here is because there's actually the better part of the image is underneath here and I just where I lined it up it overlapped so it's going to take it off it's easy to take off and the masking tape comes right off but hopefully keep our fingers crossed the image stays down you might be able to see her eyes appearing here but you wet it and then you start rubbing away the white paper okay I should also note that because I am using a canvas it's bouncy and I can't really rub super hard what you can do to remedy that is just get a book it's Martha Stewart and I'm just kind of like kind of embarrassed that I have such a love affair with Martha Stewart but this is my very first coffee table book I ever purchased in the 90s and it comes in real Handy for things like this foreign all right so we're getting closer yes Miss anime Wong we're starting to see some face I still have to do all of her hair and her arms it's going to take a while this takes like a couple hours I'm hoping her cheek this is a really thick part for some reason on occasion just do a swipe just to kind of get yourself back in alignment here should also mention that because of the springiness of the canvas you can also just do this on unstretched canvas like a prime you have to have primed canvas or even unprimed you actually could do this on unprimed canvas but do it on unstretched canvas um do the image and then stretch it onto the stretcher bars you can get your friends and family in on the action and let them help you out if you have somebody nearby I've gotten my kids to help me before have friends help me you know especially when it's a large image like this I'm making some progress so also I should mention that you can do photo transfers with magazines um if you want color and you want you know to use and you can even layer more on just you know once you take off one layer then you can add another layer but magazines use the laser ink um printing process and they make for great photo transfers foreign starting to see Anna she's coming through if parts of your image starts coming up while you're doing this don't panic if you didn't want to lose a piece of information you can always print it back out and cut out and glue back on in that area no problem but that's when you really have to embrace the patchwork effect like the collage effect of like pieces and you know not perfectly smooth imagery foreign yeah you don't have to use a spray bottle you can just have a nice warm bowl of water on the side warmer always feels better and works a little better to get that paper loosened up so that's a nice tip to know we are still getting the image off we're making a lot of progress I'm starting to see I'm really happy with the way the image did um adhere to the canvas and you can still see there's like the Cloudy areas which will have to come off eventually but you know overall it's pretty much most of the image is rubbed off and like I said before you just have to have patience and you have to have you know face that you can get all these little pieces off you will it just takes time this is not a quick project if you work smaller like we did in the last video on just a sheet of paper one photo transfer you'll get a a quicker project but this is you know this is my actual work this is something that I'll layer on embellishments and paint and gold leaf and I have to build it up and then it'll be a complete work of art keep it up so you can see I have a lot more removing of the paper to do but at least you can see the image and where it's going I can't wait to see her come alive stay tuned
