hotel or a restaurant unless they have a parent or   guardian with them so is the following statement  true or false people age 16 or over cannot drink   alcohol with a meal in a hotel or a restaurant  unless they have a parent or guardian with them   that is false now i am going to break this down  for you a little bit later so please don't worry   if you don't understand the wording i'm just  going to pick out the keywords right at the   end so stay tuned to the end of the video where  we'll go over this again right well done fast   trackers let's get straight into it the cities  of the united kingdom in your exam you will have   four cities to remember you have england which has london wales which has cardiff you have scotland  which has edinburgh edinburgh edinburgh edinburgh   edinburgh i'll show you a funny trick for  that one northern ireland which has belfast   belfast i'm so surprised with my students that how  many students cannot uh tell me the the cities um   of where of the united kingdom or even where they  live i mean i live in nottingham which is the   east midlands here robin hood city london is the  capital city of england they always get that one   wales is cardiff now the easiest way to remember  this is it's close to the cliffs of of the south   so it's cardiff cliffs scotland is edinburgh or  edinburgh uh i like to call it edinburgh to help   me memorize that it's like an iceberg edinburgh  iceberg and it's spelt the same so i call it   edinburgh but it's edinburgh edinburgh could be  like iceberg because it's so cold in scotland   that's another way to remember it belfast now  remember we talked about the potato famine in   ireland uh because of the potato famine they had  to fast they had no food so we called the northern   ireland belfast because they were fasting there  was no food there was a potato famine it's a good   way to remember it uh there are different dialects  in the united kingdom english speak english   no problems there whale speak welsh no problems  scotland speaks gaelic and northern ireland speaks   irish gaelic now this is very important gaelic is  a very ancient language of these of the people of   scotland ireland and of many of the places  and so they speak gaelic and irish gaelic   um now i i think this comes in the test but not  as much as it used to it used to come up a lot   like five years ago but not anymore as much so in  2010 there were just over 62 million people in the   united kingdom and i do believe that this is the  year that they're doing another consensus in 2021   therefore they will find another set of statistics  this is migration into the united kingdom   uh is the reason why there's so many people  in the uk and longer life expectancy more   people are living for longer because of the  fantastic health care system um at least to   a level it's a fantastic healthcare system and  it's great and it's it's keeping everyone uh fit   healthy regular checkups lots and lots of hours  and lots and lots of hard work by doctors nurses   and specialists a proportion of uh population now  84 of people in the united kingdom live in england   only five percent of people live in wales  eight percent of people live in scotland   and northern ireland just has three percent of  the overall population so more people live in   england than they do anywhere else money now i  know i don't have to tell you guys about money   it's so interesting that when we talk about  money nobody gets this wrong nobody gets this   wrong in the test they're gonna try and trick  you in the exam by saying okay so uh pick the   one that is correct so they'll go okay five pound  ten pound twenty pound fifty pound a hundred pound   is that right guys is there a hundred pound  note i don't think so so they'll say 1p 2p   3p is it a 3p no no so don't pick that one 5p 10p  15p there is no 15p 20p 50p 75 pence there is no   75 pence one pound two pound um what they're  trying to do guys is they are trying to um   trick you they're trying to trick you so one p  two p five p ten p twenty p fifty p one pound two   pound two p one p two p five p ten p twenty  p fifty pence one pound two pound that's it   that's the then five pound ten pound twenty pound  and fifty pound that's it that's everything um   religion now we talked about the anglican  church the church of england is the anglican   church anglican is the old word for england  and so the protestant church of england during   the reformations in 1530s is called the anglican  church so this is the anglican church this is the   monarch the king or queen the queen here is called  monarch she is the head of the church of england   and this is the spiritual leader he is the arc  bishop of canterbury now let's break this down   here you've got the queen with a nice tiara she's  the head of the church of ignorance so she is the   head he is the spiritual leader he's the heart  of england and he's the ark bishop bishop means   like priest but the head head priest canterbury  uh is this place in the top right hand corner this   is canterbury now you see this guy's staff the  archbishop of canterbury the staff is actually if   you look carefully it's shaped like a swan now why  is it shaped like a swan can anyone tell me why   it's shaped like a swan don't worry i'll wait for  the clever clogs and the people out there who said   it's shaped like a swan because the queen owns  all the swans you'll be right i hate swans   i've seen them do terrible terrible things at  picnics and has forever scarred me chasing people   who have food chasing people in boats breaking  people's arms because their wings are so powerful   and biting people so yeah swans you can keep them  queenie uh that's all yours you can keep all the   swans but that's that's why the staff is built  like a swan so he is the he's got a different   hat he is the archbishop i don't know why the hat  looks like it's uh three dolphins in a whirlpool   like a swimming pool but you know there it  goes um and she's she's basically the queen and   that's it the church of england so let's  play a game guys i want you to know the   difference between the church of england and  the pro the presbyterian church of scotland   so scotland has presbyterian church and england  has a anglican church so i want you at home to   word it in your mouth anglican church  presbyterian church so word it in your   mouth okay this is going to help you to get  around it anglican church presbyterian church anglican church presbyterian church say it with  me guys come on don't be shy no one's around   unless everyone's around then be shy anglican  church presbyterian church anglican church presbyterian church so the church of scotland is a   presbyterian church and the church of england  is an anglican church england anglican scotland   presbyterian all right well done good job uh so  there is no church in wales or northern ireland   but there are different types of protestant  groups such as the baptists the methodists   the presbyterians and the quakers all right  let's keep it going guys most common ethnic   origins in the uk there are white people  including european australian canadian and   new zealand uh foreign nationals and american  of course there are asian people uh pakistanis   indians and of course the asian asian the real  asian people which is from china singapore india all the asian countries vietnam thailand malaysia those places there's  black peoples from the continents of africa and   all over the world of course the caribbean uh  then there's mixed descent oh of course you have   massively ethnic uh massive diversity because  of the british empire and um amazingly diverse   country the united kingdom is beautifully diverse  and so diverse that you yourself may not have   when you come to england you may see  if you go to london everyone's diverse   from diverse places in the world beautiful europe  america canada and we're all working in society   sometimes from your country you may not see uh  asian people black people mixtures and people you   may not even see european people or australians or  canadians but here in england you see everyone and   so that's not normal around the world it's kind of  unique to england by law men and women cannot be   discriminated against because of their gender and  because they are they are they're not married so   you can't go into a workplace and say i'm going  to pay you more money because you're a man and   pay you less money because you're a woman or pay  you more money because you're a woman and pay you   less because you're a man men and women have equal  rights to work and the key that you want to take   away for your exam and this is the secret for the  exam is it's 50 50. this is 50 this is 50 men and   women are 50 50 and they both have responsibility  for the children this is 50 50. um half of the   british workforce are women fantastic girls  leave school with better qualifications than boys   that makes a lot of sense because lads just  want to mess around and girls are concentrating   more women are study at university than men so in  the united kingdom more women go to uni than men   and as you can see by this lovely woman here we  can do it meaning they're in a factory doing the   work line and and of course anything that a  woman can do in the workplace a man can do   in the workplace um that's the idea behind the  life and the uk test so whatever your personal   ideas about men and women in quality set that  to one side if you want to pass this exam   men and women in the context of the life in the uk  test are 50 50 equal raising children studying at   university working in the workplace everything's  50 50. that's all you want to say equal 50 50.   all right let's talk about the patron saints  days saint david day wales 1st of march   is not a holiday uh this is saint david this  is the welsh flag not a holiday saint patrick's   day in northern ireland 17th of march that  is a holiday national holiday for ireland   uh saint george's day england 23rd of april that  is not a holiday that is saint george fighting a   dragon to save a fair maiden don't ask me i didn't  draw this picture and don't ask me i didn't make   up the legend but also strangely enough i  believe that saint george was from georgia   and he was a brown guy a black brown guy so um i  don't i think the term whitewashing is being used   a lot lately and i think this is what it refers to  uh but in in an idea that saint george is this um   uh saint who fought a dragon to to to to protect  a fair maiden um i don't know where this is all   coming from but this is this is highly um uh yeah  this is this is not this is not what what we think   it is do a bit of research on who saint george is  the only thing that comes in your test is when is   saint george's day 23rd of april that's the first  question the second question is is saint george   a national holiday for england it is not you  don't get a bank holiday on that day but here's   the english flag anyway right saint andrews day  scotland 30th of november i believe he carried   a cross with him and then crucified himself to  get closer to jesus christ and god so yeah cool   do what you got to do man uh saint at andrews day  30th in november uh the best way to remember this   is it's 30th of november and andrew so it's like  at the end of the year and so a lot of scottish   celebrations like hogmanay at the end of the  year said andrew's date at the end of the year   so this is all coinciding on that time festivals  and traditions 25th of december christmas day   where they eat roast turkey christmas pudding  and mince pies boxing day is one day after   christmas day on the 26th of december and that is  a public holiday here you can see father christmas   getting the present of coca-cola and the  two kids are looking saying yeah let's uh   let's knock him over the head and steal his  sleigh and all his presents yeah cool i'll   go get the crowbar um interesting story about  saint uh um c crimbo christmas saint nicholas   the original name of santa claus is saint nicholas  and he wore green not red however the marketing   people over at coca-cola and the guy saint  nicholas uh went around giving presents to kids   uh and he was just he's just a gift giver  always giving gifts uh lovely i think his main   his main i think he's a patron saint of amsterdam  i think he's the patron saint of amsterdam but   also they have um they have him in turkey as  well i think interesting but i have to double   check these facts but i know in amsterdam they  have churches to saint nicholas um but coca-cola   changed his green to red came down the chimney  shoe and he's been a marketing uh ploy ever since   on the 25th of december but the beautiful thing  about all of this is it's a great time to spend   time with your family to relax to close off  the financial year by buying loads and loads   of presents and then starting a very very slow  january um but there you go that is an incredible   time to just spend time with family that's  the main part of these holidays so boxing day   is another sales day after christmas day where  everything is half price but you guys already   know about that easter is in march and april  and um this one is uh to celebrate the uh death   and rebirth of jesus christ um which  is when he was crucified which is why   all the kids go around finding chocolate  eggs in uh bushes and i have no idea   why this is either i'm sorry i'm going to  throw my hands up and say i got no idea why   why this celebration is about rabbits and eggs  and chocolate eggs maybe the rebirth of christ   i don't know why it's eggs and chocolate eggs but  okay cool but there is something that i do know   new year's is 31st of december and that's  first of january 31st is new year's   eve first of january is new year's day and  valentine's day 14th of february now valentine's   day is a day for love for anybody and everybody  whether you love thy neighbor love thy friend   love thy husband or wife love thy mother love thy  children valentine's day is love for anyone and   you should always be showing love why because  love is intrinsically linked with truth what   is truth truth is such such as love love is truth  so if you love someone you'll tell them the truth   and if you tell the truth to someone you love  them so valentine's day is a great day to tell   everybody the truth and show love because what  is truth truth is such such is love love is truth   it's als in a circle april fool's day first of  april great day look at that april fool's day   first of april happy april fool's day now this  does come in your test it says when do people   make jokes this is a joker like on the card the  playing card joker um or a jester when do people   make jokes that are jokes until midday uh it's on  april 4 so up until 12 o'clock you can make jokes   that's when newspapers print jokes everyone  prints jokes and that's it's april fool's day   uh this is what i was talking about and this is  this is awesome this is fantastic this is amazing   this is lent now christians do 40 days of fasting  before easter the muslim people fast from sun   uh sun rise to sunset and it can take anywhere  between uh 12 14 hours depending on the time   of year but the christians do something awesome  which is uh they give away all of their uh habits   like the things that they like so for example  they could be smokers and they give up smoking   they could like chicken they give up chicken  they could like um you know going out and going   for restaurants they give up that they give up  something that they like and they do it for 40   days so it begins on ash wednesday pancake day  show tuesday and it's the day before lent starts   um unfortunately they stopped giving pancakes  out at school so pancake day is no longer a thing   at school which kind of sucks but there we go that  was a couple years back you could have known when   lent is starting because your kids would have  come home and said i ate this many pancakes   and now i'm gonna lie down because i got a stomach  ache can you go make me some bronte and under   uh some uh roti and eggs kids never stop eating  okay festival time let's talk about diwali   and hanukkah uh i don't think hanukkah is  on the exam though which is interesting no   none of my students in the last 10 years have ever  come back to me saying hanukkah was on the test   but we're going to teach it anyway because we're  doing all the festivals diwali is the festival   of lights it's an extremely special occasion  diwali and vesaki uh in october or november   lasts for five days the sake is different but  diwali is celebrated by the hindus and sikhs   uh five days of light celebrations  in october and november to celebrate   um the uh victory over good over evil hanukkah  in november and december is celebrated for eight   days to remember the jews struggle for religious  freedom they i i remember trying to explain this   but i don't think i explained it very well  you can google hanukkah and try and look at   what the stories are uh behind hanukkah i said it  was uh the israelites journeying in the deserts   and on what happened but apparently that's not  that's not quite right so you have to google it   uh but it doesn't come in the test so okay  cool but diwali definitely comes in the test   all the time uh mother's day uh mothering sunday  the sunday three weeks before easter father's day   the third sunday in june mother's day father's  day fantastic days to explain that you love   festivals and traditions halloween is 31st  of october my birthday is the 1st of november   uh so my so my sister used to say uh hey mom it  looks like you did not take uh rahul's mask off   after halloween that's why he looks the way he  does yeah cool so if you want to remember it your   teachers uh birthdays one day after halloween and  31st of october is halloween first of november is   uh my birthday so that's just any which way that  you can remember these things right bonfire night   now this let's slow it down this is some craziness  okay bonfire night is on the 5th of november and   it's traditionally filled with fireworks there's  a big bonfire but actually it originally uh is set   um the original reason why you light a bonfire  was because of a failed terrorist attempt on the   houses of parliament now what was this failed  terrorist attempt okay at the time in 1605   the catholics of europe and france italy uh spain  portugal they they were all really really really   wanting to take over england because they thought  that england was this powerhouse protestant   religious group or group of um people that needed  to be taken over they thought that basically there   was subverting christianity and that they were  devil worshipers and we need to sort them out   so um this is this is a whole thing between  christians and and uh like in catholics and   protestants since henry viii kicked out all of  the priests uh the catholic priests and said we're   going to be protestant now so that we can keep  all the money and they've never it's i think the   catholics have been a little bit jealous maybe  or they'll just be like no no no no you can't   do that we're going to take you over um that's  i don't think they were jealous but they would   definitely try they they tried like hundreds of  times to take over and this is one of the attempts   so guy fawkes and his guys and his people the the  guy fawkes guys went underneath parliament and   took these huge barrels of gun powder like  humongous barrels of gunpowder and plotted   them all the way under the uh tower of london  against the main pillars and they were literally   ready to flick the match and uh gunpowder would  have gone all the way and blown up all of uh   parliament building the parliament building would  have sunk killing all the all the politicians   all the members of parliament everyone it would  have literally blown up everything uh and then   the uh foreign powers would have come in and tried  to take over because there's no government right   so at this point they would have really sent their  armies in and you know messed the place up um but   what happened was the night before they were meant  to do one of guy fawkes's people had a friend in   um the parliament at the time and he didn't want  him to die so he sent him a letter says please do   not come to parliament at this time uh your friend  and so that guy took the letter to the police the   police then took the bobbies down and they were  like hello what's always saying all this gunpowder   underneath parliament building what's all this  then and they caught guy fawkes the courtesy mates   just as they were about to light the the mat and  then they um tortured them they um executed their   friends but guy fawkes specifically they burnt  him at the stake and of course you know burning   at the stake is reserved for witches and catholics  now the mistake that the british government did or   the english government at the time because it was  england was celebrating guy fawkes every single   year which was a reminder of the protestant and  catholic divide and that led to continuous divide   for the english people and continuous divide for  the catholic people for the next 400 years um   and so what do they do it you know there's  a penny for the guy they get like an effigy   of guy fawkes you can you you know you  walk down the road you go penny for the guy   and then an effigy is like a straw man they get a  penny you go buy some fireworks you light them on   fire and you know you have a bit of fun um but  bonfire night is literally you know you make   a big bonfire you put loads of fireworks on  and it's now a celebration for the kids and   no one remembers this about guy fawkes so going  back to your exam now that you know the story   you know what bonfire night is about it's  bonfire night is on the 5th of november what   is bonfire night it was um a plan to you know put  a bomb in the houses of parliament in 1605. don   but you know the story now so you know more  than probably some english people know i guess   so well done bank holidays which are of no  religious significance beginning of may late   may and early june august in northern ireland  the anniversary of the battle of the born in july   is also a public holiday however bank holidays  are holidays where everyone takes the day off   let's talk about the middle ages and the great  cathedral and churches let's talk about the white   tower or the tower of london this is an example of  a norman keeping if you guys remember back to the   first video i showed you 1066 william lahonte  beats harold hardrada in 1066 in the battle   of hastings and he built the tower of london so  this is built in 1066 it's nearly 1 000 years old   and it was built on the orders of william  the conqueror 17th century the queen's house   at greenwich the w is signage is silent it's  greenwich and the banqueting house in whitehall   in london so the banqueting houses on the right  here you can see it's a very beautiful house this   is where all the foreign dignitaries come and eat  their very very fancy fancy food served by the   queen this is greenwich uh queen's house so she  lives here she's got many houses century simple   designs became very popular why because they  thought that complicated designs which were like   the designs that were in these beautiful pictures  like like they wanted to make gardens that looked   like the garden of eden but apparently that became  very gross i don't know people's tastes changed so   the scottish architect robert adam influenced the  development of the architecture in uk europe and   america so this simple design is exactly the  same as like uh the white house very simple   um like simple simple designs like squares and  stuff like that however in england in the 19th   century medieval gothic style became popular  again so they started building things like   um you know like the houses of parliament this  gothic style where there's got all these shadows   and lights and you know big ben and stuff  and you know you've got st pancras station   um which looks like this is beautiful you know i  just i walk outside saint pancras and i just look   at it and i'll go wow it's incredible i look at  um you know this building is like wow but you know   something about these buildings they just look  you know uh beautiful gothic style 20th centuries   edulutium had an influence throughout the british  empire um war memorials like the cenotaph in   whitehall very simple cenotaph uh memorial which  is the site of the annual remembrance day service   by the queen politicians and foreign ambassadors  so here is where you've got remembrance day   and in remembrance day uh this is where  they remember all the people who have died   so for example uh the people who died in world war  one world war ii uh you know all the all the wars   and on the 11 11 a.m on the 11th of  november 11 11 11 uh they come to the um   they come to the remembrance day cenotaph and they  uh have i believe it's five minutes silence or a   minute silence i think uh and to remember people  who have died so if you uh in your family have   had an uncle a great uncle or a grandfather or  grandmother or a great-great-grandfather mother   that has been in the war then you will also uh you  can also remember them uh because they may have   they were involved they died or they did not  die and this is this is where it's at the   annual remembrance day service by the queen uh  she does it uh and it's at cenotaph in whitehall   uh let's talk about the turner prize um  turner prize is an interesting one because   uh it's it's an art prize now the turd um i think  it's william turner or something turner he makes   these beautiful paintings that have got gorgeous  like sky and and land and sea and whatnot but the   thing is um there's one painting that you got to  look for called the slave ship so you can google   it type in turner turner painting the slave ship  and it's a painting that in modern times has got a   lot of flack for the art itself the subject matter  the way it's been painted it looks great and you   know it's got great style it's you know it's got  great uh paint and colors and it looks good but   like from the top to the bottom you'll see this  sinking no sinking slaves you'll see these people   throwing slaves overboard and there's  sharks in the water and every person that   saw that painting back in like 90 like i think  it was like the 1820s or 1830s or something   crazy like a long time ago would comment on  everything but the slaves being thrown over   which sparked a lot of critical discussion on  why are people not talking about these slaves   but at the time slaves were thrown over  slave ships because of insurance purposes   if you were to throw a slave over a board um if  you think they were going to die in the journey   you can claim your money back from your insurances  uh and so therein lies the the unspeakable   atrocities of uh the slave trade so here you have  the turner prize uh he is an artist he painted   many things you can look at his art and he's a  contemporary arts award contemporary means up like   like uh up-to-date art award uh and it was named  after joseph turner oh there it is there's not   william turner's joseph turner so google joseph  turner uh paintings and then after you've done   that google joseph turner the slave ship and let  us know what you think is this you know something   that we should be discussing now um i think he  has a biopic film uh but you know have a have a   look into him um beautiful paintings questionable  subject matter on one of the paintings and maybe   a few others i haven't i don't get into it  too much but i did see that one painting   right let's carry on one painting amongst many  let's talk about theater this is something i   know a little bit about london's west end is  known as theaterland mousetrap is the oldest um   uh murder mystery play uh by dame agatha christie  that's been running on the west end since   1952. it has had the longest show in history  since 1952. there is musical theater 19th   century gilbert and sullivan they wrote comic  operas including hms pinafore the pirates of   the panzans and the makaido this comes up very  very less doesn't come up a lot in the exam but   you know mousetrap longest running show gilbert  and sonoma the pirates of the pandans these are   theater plays uh theaters such as a theater writer  such as andrew lloyd webber has written the music   for shows um in collaboration with tim rice jesus  christ superstar evita cats in the phantom of the   upper right theatre if you want to watch anything  cool go watch phantom of the opera if you want   to watch anything crazy go watch cats but the  point is phantom of the opera is a uh phantom   of the opera is a a good day to play i've never  seen cats but this is all uh west end theater   pantomime is a theater for children  and it's usually a christmas time   this does come up in your test so you've got to be  careful to pick this one pantomime is one british   tradition at christmas time they're based on  fairy stories and are light-hearted play uh plays   uh with music and comedy enjoyed by family and  audiences these are plays such as um peter pan um peter pan uh there's another one uh the  giant the jack in the beanstalk cinderella   um things like that that those you know pantomime  for kids edinburgh festival or edinburgh festival   i keep calling edinburgh like iceberg because  it's so cold edinburgh festival takes place   in edinburgh every summer and it's a series of  different arts and cultural events so here in the   background you can see edinburgh uh every summer  different arts and cultural festivals this is   edinburgh festival here and the edinburgh  castles in the background so these are like   uh really cool festivals uh where actors and  playwrights and everyone goes to meet each other   now what's cool about this is that you know  there's some um i'll give you an example there was   one play where uh it was on a bus and the bus was  riding around and people would get on and off the   bus and that was the play and then the play would  take place around the city on and off the bus   very cool very uh different it was  very nice um lawrence olivier awards uh   this is shakespeare's um shakespearean  actor called uh named lawrence olivier   and this is his statue the lawrence olivier awards  takes place annually at different venues in london   categories including best director best actor  best actress the awards are named after the   british actor sir lawrence olivier and later lord  olivier who is best known for his roles in various   shakespeare plays so there he is there there's  meryl streep holding the lawrence olivier awards   wonderful the proms now this is super  interesting because this does come up   in your test it's an eight week summer season  of orchestral classical music that takes place   in various venues including the royal albert  hall in london organized by the bbc since 1927.   so what is the proms the promise is like uh when  everyone gets together they have like a uh group   uh music concert and they all play traditional  english songs but they get dressed up on the last   day in british clothes in like suits and things  like that so it's like um they play mary poppins   songs they play james bond um they play loads and  loads of of traditional english songs like harry   potter i think things like that uh and that's held  and and the best way to remember is the proms is   like when you go for a dance in school and things  like that so this is an eight-week summer season   of a class kestrel classical music and the  last day is um uh is where everyone dresses   up so again the only thing you need to memorize is  that the proms is run by the bbc that's the best   thing to memorize okay fashion and design none of  this comes in your test at all it is in your book   this isn't your book they they ask you to read  it but it's not in your test thomas chippendale   in the 18th century made beautiful furniture art  designer clarice cliff designed art deco ceramics   cool not in your chest interior designer uh sir  terence conrad 20th century nodding your test   fashion designer mary quaint alexander mcqueen  and vivian westwood this isn't your test   so you have to memorize if you're talking about  fashion designer these are the things that come   in your test but not a lot is in your tests none  of these things really um famous books and authors   poets um now this is interesting many british  authors have won uh the nobel prize in literature   many many of them and that's what you want to know  many is the is the answer not a few not a little   but many uh novelists sir william golding he won  harold pinto one seamus haney one uh playwright   poet all these people have won many many many  many many uh people have won british people have   won the literature i think british people  are really good at writing so there you go   uh agatha christie detective stories poirot  death on the nile uh this is uh puero and   this is james bond doubler7 ian fleming's books  introduced james bond and this is james bond here   this is poirot death on the nile um in 2003 the  lord of the rings by j.r.r tolkien was voted the   country's best love novid well deserved because  that guy was a genius in how he invented languages   and how he invented scapes and the adaptation  by peter jackson lord of the rings film is a   great film classic film you could watch that 20  30 years later and it's still good 1968 the man   booker prize for fiction is awarded annually for  the best fiction novel and you can see mana booker   for best novel book and novel you can link them  together written by the author from a commonwealth   ireland or a zimbabwean country for morodia all  right let's talk about famous sports people this   jeez i haven't written them down but i know that's  jessica enos because it says it on her on her uh   on her um on her uh chest it says enos that's just  genius that's mo farrow the guy who does the thing   with the hands and i can't remember this guy's  name he he won the gold and wimbledon andy murray   andy murray fantastic uh scottish athlete of and  he did a great job he said he would do it and he   did it mo farah said you do it you did it jessica  said she did it 2012 olympics was a great one   uh where were you during the 2012 olympics let  us know tell us if you were there if you were   here if you're back home in your country  were you in the uk in 2012. there were   three times the united kingdom has hosted the  olympics 1908 they hosted the olympics uh 1948   they hosted the olympics and 2012 they hosted the  olympics so 1908 was before the first world war   uh you can see that picture here 1908 1948 is um  after 1945 they held the london olympics and 2012   they held the olympics here already then let's  keep it going cricket i don't like cricket or no   i love it so this is crooked the most famous  competition is the ashes which is a series   of test matches played between england and  australia do we have anything about the ashes   the only thing you need to know about the ashes  is that it was when england versus australia   england got beat so bad by australia that  they called it the death of english cricket   and the australians burnt the stumps and put  into a little ash urn and gave it back oh no   they kept it i think or they gave it to them and  every year since then they fight for those ashes   yeah england and australia have got  a bit of history because australia   was a penal colony in which all england sent  all of the um the um what do they call it the um   uh they sent all of the uh the the convicts  and the prisoners over to um uh to australia   and australia uh just did really really well  in sports they did fantastic okay let's talk   about football england's only international  tournament victory was at the world cup of 1966   hosted in the united kingdom so england um england  won one world cup in football when it hosted it   1966 that was when england had won uh which is  great i mean it's fantastic um which is amazing um   rugby two types of rugby union rugby and  league rugby that this comes in your test   this uh bobby moore bobby moore is the uh person  who won the world cup this does not that this   i don't think many of these comes in  tests but this there's one question here   there are two types of rugby union and league  but the most famous rugby uh competition is union   competition six nations six nations comes in your  test now what are the six nations the six nations   is ireland italy scotland wales england and france  these are the six nations of the uh tournament   um and the most well-known rugby league champ  competition is the super league a lot of this   doesn't come in the test but the six nations  does the six nations is a rugby competition uh   england won the one world cup uh ashes is a  in english versus australia uh tournament so   we're getting there guys we're slowly  learning you know getting a basic idea   horse racing royal ascot a five-day race  meeting in berkshire attended by members of   the royal family the grand national at aintree  near liverpool and the scottish grand national   air um royal ascot we're gonna say this is quite a  race horses is quite a royal sport so royal ascot   racehorsing royal ascot horse racing uh grand  national grand is quite expensive so the royal   horse racing is quite expensive and the ascot is  this very posh um uh like scarf that you can put   on as an ascot and the scottish grand nationals  are air because all of the horses they are so fast   they're like air okay golf oh my god we're going  to talk about 15th century scottish sport and golf   um and this is going to be a great one because it  started in saint andrews which is the home of golf   in scotland and the open championship is the only  major tournament held outside the u.s it is hosted   by a different golf course every year so the saint  andrews in scotland is known as the home of golf   open championship evolved let's talk about a  tennis now there's a real simple thing that you   can do to memorize tennis and this is it before  i read all of this just wanted to show you one   trick whim ball done whim ball done that's the  best thing so just memorize whim bolden like   it's a ball so just like uh andy murray here is  hitting a ball it's a whim ball done tennis whim   bolton everything else you don't have to memorize  because it's really not a test evolved in england   in the 19th century so just ignore what i say for  the next five minutes no one has to know evolved   in england in the late 19th century the first  tennis club was found in lemmington spa in 1872   actually this is a new test this and this these  two most famous tennis tournament hosts in britain   is the wimbledon championships taking place each  year at the all england lawn tennis and croquet   club it is the oldest tennis tournament in the  world and the only grand sum event played on grass   uh a british sailor sir francis chichester  was the first person to sail around the world   in 1966 to 1967 this is rowing two years  later sir robert sorry sir robin knox johnston   became the first person to do it without stopping  excellent amazing the most famous sailing event   in the uk is at cows on the isle of wight  there there is a popular yearly rowing race   on the thames between oxford and cambridge  universities so oxbridge universities we   call them oxford and cambridge together  we combine them and make them oxbridge   a famous rowing race at the thames famous sailing  event in the uk's cows in the isle of wight   two years later so robert knox johnston became  the first person to do it without stopping   so francis chichester was the first person to  sell single-handed around the world in 1966-96   so you're kind of getting like if we just slow  it down and just quickly recap sports we've got   a lot of sports here tennis running uh olympic  sports um 2012 1908 and 1948 we've got ashes   we've got cricket we've got football 1966 world  cup victory we've got rugby six nations nothing   else to really learn there um that's going to be a  new test that is you've got the royal ascot horse   racing grand national aintree and scottish grand  national air you've got golf 15th century scotland   home is saint andrews england wimbledon uh tennis  tournament and limiting spa so francis chitchat   sailed single-handedly robert knox johnson first  person to do without stopping the most famous   sailing in the uk is that cows at the isle  of wight and you have oxford and cambridge   universities having their own rowing race again  it can seem like this is quite a lot however   if you carry on the course there's just simple  questions and answers the the presentation and   everything that we've been doing so far guys  has really been about just telling you stories   and this is culture of the united  kingdom so if you come from outside   you can relate to this that this is a culture  and these presentations are designed to   help you with culture and understanding  culture and getting used to the culture   but in the exam there's real questions and answers  that's found in the full course that you can find   uh that you can you know later on in the actual  um website course the one that we have on our   site and that's that's going to make it a lot  easier this is just to help you understand   what they're talking about lewis hamilton the guy  that likes to throw champagne in people's faces um   formula one grand prix event held in the uk each  year starts in 1902 winners include damon hill   lewis hamilton and jensen button yes or no it's  depending on your you know do you like racing or   not racing i don't know it's up to you flowers now  this is cool this is something you want to know   gardening in england they have the rose or the  gulab as they say in urdu scotland is the thistle   it's uh prickly on the top and prickly  below very beautiful on top prickly below   exactly like a scotsman uh if you touch it you're  going to get yourself hurt wales is the daffodil   very inoffensive flower beautiful and everyone  picks it out just like the welsh northern ireland   is the sham work for leaf lucky clover but if you  can find any luck in ireland it's very difficult   you can search all your life and still not find a  four leaf lucky clover just like ireland but the   rose is um the uh england beautiful at the top has  thorns down below hiding so the thorns are hidden   because everyone's looking at the beautiful rose  so let's go through that list again england is   the rose scotland is the thistle wales is the  daffodil and northern ireland is the shamrock   the rose has thorns underneath and the gulab  is on the front the thistle is beautiful at   the top prickly on the sides and if you touch it  you're going to hurt your hands the daffodil is um   inoffensive and that's just like whales and  shamrock is a fully fluffy clover very good ladies   and gentlemen let's talk about food i always  get hungry when we look at this part england   is roast beef served with potatoes vegetables  yorkshire puddings fish and chips scotland is   haggis a sheep's stomach stuffed with awful  sweat onions and oatmeal so again we know about   england's food it's you know fish and chips roast  beef no problems there but does anybody know what   haggis is anybody at all can tell us what haggis  is haggis is the inner lining of a sheep stretched   out cleaned with water then you stick all of the  entrails inside fill it with porridge awful sweat   everything wrap it up boil it in water pull it  out and then serve it with a shot of whiskey i've   never had it but i've heard it's delicious i don't  know um i've heard it's delicious you can get you   can get haggis in a can basically uh that's haggis  now if you thought that was disgusting it's not   it could be really nice i'll show you something  that is disgusting uh welsh cakes not disgusting   delicious my favorite are welsh cakes from flour  dried fruits spices served either hotter cold   delicious mmm very very nice northern ireland  has old stuff right now this is interesting   um bacon eggs sausage black pudding white  pudding tomatoes mushrooms soda bread and potato   bread now you said to me there's something  disgusting right what is it teacher ryle   now it's depending on what you like to eat but  can anyone tell us what black pudding is it's   okay take your time google it well ulster fry is  bacon eggs sausage black pudding white pudding   tomatoes mushroom soda burn and potato bread  black pudding is pig's blood congealed served   on the plate with the rest of the food yeah  be careful you should get the intercontinental   ulster fried the vegetarian one okay let's keep  going right last couple of slides guys and then   you can go home and relax i know this has been a  very long presentation but it is uh the fun one uh   out of the lot so films alfred hitchcock vertigo  1930s the british studios flourish and directors   include sir alexander corder sir alfred hitchcock  uh excellent directors making great films   in 1950s to 1960s it was a high point for british  comedies including passport to plymouth the   ladykillers and later on the carry-on films the  annual british academy film awards hosted by the   british academy of the film and television awards  bafta are the british equivalent of the oscars see   page 104 for some of the famous british films  but you don't have to all you have to know is   what is the baftas this is going to be in your  test what are the baftas it's a film award um   i don't think any of this comes in except for  punch and judy in the 19th century satirical   magazines became published satirical means  satire it means um google something called   spitting image and then you'll understand um  so it began to be published and the most famous   was punch which was uh published for  the first time in 1840s comedy comedians   were popular were a popular feature of british  musical a form of variety theater which was very   common until television became the leading  form of entertainment in the united kingdom   um so yeah you go to a show you watch comedy  you come home and then you just stare at   the wall until you go to sleep that was life  before television really honest to god 100   accurate there right british comedy later later  later oh that this spitting image there you go   forgot we put that in there look you see here  margaret thatcher the pope two other politicians   i don't know that is and that is the ayatollah  so very relevant people of the time of this   90s television comedy developed its own styles  such as situational comedy sitcom situational   satire which is that that's the right there  uh shows like that was the week that was   in the 1960s spitting image 1980s 1990s  progressive comedy started out with monty python's   flying circus in 1969 stand-up comedy where a  solo comedian takes to a live audience let's   keep it going peter k excellent regular soap  operas coronation street in eastenders so who   loves watching eastenders tell us about  it who loves watching coronation street i can't do coronation street  but i can't do eastenders yeah pretty much okay television license so  people over the age of 75 can apply for free   blind people can get 50 discount why do blind  people get 50 discount because they can only   take in half of the film see so they they have to  pay half so they get so if you're blind and you   can listen you get 50 percent discount see the bbc  are not that heartless you know if you can if you   can hear they'll only give you half because you  can't see the picture see it's about fear isn't it   blind 50 off you'll receive a fine  of up to a thousand quid if you   if you watch tv but do not own a  tv license however however however   i'm just saying if you don't have a tv license not  encouraging it or whatever but you know there are   other um things you can watch on youtube and you  don't have to watch tv but if you like eastenders   and coronation street i think this bbc catch-up  and i think you still need to have a tv license to   be able to watch bbc catch-up but they don't  enforce it so i don't know what to do about   that um all i know make sure you follow the rules  social networking talking about not following the   rules facebook facebook is a social networking  website and twitter is also a social work   networking website this does not come in your test  but it is written in your book which is another   reason why you can talk to a teacher to explain to  you what's in the book but what's not in the exam   so what is in the exam is this to buy alcohol in  a pub or a nightclub you must be 18 or over when   when you are 16 you can buy drink of wine or beer  with a meal in a hotel or restaurant as long as   you are with someone over the age of 18. that i  will cover for you a little bit later on betting   and gambling in the united kingdom is legal um so  18 you can go into betting shops and it is legal   because you can have a betfred a money shop paddy  power coral lad brooks quick quid loans on every   corner there is a national lottery for which  draws are made every week people under 16 are   not allowed to participate in the natural lottery  so you've got to be 16 or over to buy a lottery   ticket animals it is against the law to treat a  pet cruelly or to neglect it all dogs in public   places must wear a collar uh showing the name and  the address of the owner so this does come in the   test they say um you should wear a collar for your  owner's address so here as you can see it says uh   freddie teddy sorry and there is the the the  um uh the the owners medallion around the neck   yes so places of interest 15 national  parks in england wales and scotland   the national church is a charity founded in  1895 that works to preserve important buildings   coastlines and countryside in the uk this is  quite important actually because with this one   the national trust is a charity that  helps protect coastlines buildings   things like that and they're important buildings  to preserve uh coastline countryside in the uk   um and it's it's basically a charity that  protects the people so the uk landmarks   are big ben the eden project and edinburgh  castle so big ben is a landmark in in england   eden project is a landmark in cornwall and it's  got loads of these green houses and the best way   to remember this is that these greenhouses  are like um these greenhouses are like uh   that they help you to uh grow different  types of flowers from all around the world   and it's based in cornwall so what can you  grow inside of a greenhouse you can grow   corn so greenhouse corn well edinburgh castle is a  castle in scotland and it's still being used today   so the giant's causeway is  northeast coast of northern ireland   uh loch lomond and trussex national park covers  720 square miles west of scotland uh and the   largest expanse of fresh water in mainland  britain so giant's causeway is this one here   and this is in uh ireland uh london's eye is here  and this is in um where is this this is in london   of course yes and loch lomond is in scotland now  the easiest way to remember loch lomond is lock   is scottish for lake so lock is lake lake is in  england lock is in scotland so that's a trick that   you can use in the test lock scotland lake england  london eyes 443 feet tall uh very very tall but   the only thing you need to know is loch lorman  london's eye and giants causeway snowdonia is   a national park in north wales covers an area of  838 square miles in snowden snowden is the highest   mountain in wales so snowdonia is in wales that  comes in the test as well what is the mountain in   wales called it is called snowdonia the tower  of london first built by william le conqueror   we looked at this three times in the test in  the presentation so it will come in your test   after he became king in 1066 people can see the  crown jewels here um and the crown jewels are kept   in the tower of london this is where king henry  viii executed his wives uh kept all the prisoners   lake district again uh lake not lock so if it's  lake it's in england is in north west england   england's largest national park covers 885  square miles and the biggest stretch of water is   windermere so the biggest stress of english water  is in windermere alright guys fantastic work let's   go through the questions and answer now i'm pretty  sure you guys have got this so question number one   what celebration takes place each year on the 14th  of february bonfire night halloween hog monday or   valentine's day so what celebration takes place  each year 14th february remember it's the it's the london   olympics which two patron saints days occur in  march saint patrick's saint david saint george or   saint andrews which two patron saints days occur  in march saint patrick's st david saint george or   saint andrew it is saint patrick and saint david  so st patrick and saint david occur in march   well done which two foods are associated with  england roast beef fish and chips haggis or   ulster fry so which two foods are associated with  england roast beef fish and chips haggis also is   definitely now here's the best way to remember  this guys england what's the food of england the   food of england is roast beef and fish and chips  the food of scotland is haggis and the food of   ireland is ulster fry so roast beef and  fish and chips are the food of england   which two of the following are uk landmarks the  london eye the national trust edinburgh castle   eisenfort so you gotta look for uk if this is  uk it's the united kingdom if it says england   it's just england so when you see this do check  out what it's referring to if it's uk london in   edinburgh castle london is in england at edinburgh  castles in scotland uk london eye edinburgh castle   easiest way to remember it guys which of the  following statements is true the national parks   are national sports grounds for people to  hold sporting events national parks are areas   of protected countryside that everyone can visit  so what uh which of the following statements are   true the national parks are national sports  grounds for people to hold sporting events   national parks areas of countryside protects  concern that everyone can visit national   means everyone everyone can visit it's protected  countryside national protected countryside that   everyone can visit well done at
