hello i'm craig from rise bikes and i'm here to show you today how to open up your rear hub motor tools you'll need for this are going to be a secure t20 torque wrench now just to note it does need to be the secure variety which is the one that has a small pinhole to be able to access the bolts second is simply a hammer you will need to use a hammer a little bit in case the cell gets stuck [Music] on the motor hub with a rear wheel you will see that there are six bolts securing the hub plate to of course the hub casing some videos will always tell you to remove the cassette you don't need to you can simply turn it to gain access to the bolt itself this is where you'll want to use the secure t20 now you do want to be careful of course when you're unscrewing the bolts they are held in with loctite which means they are very tight to pull out and they will be stripped easily if you're not careful so just be gentle with it you will need to apply force but just be cautious and hold it securely all you do is simply remove the bolts now once you of course you've unscrewed all the bolts you do want to put them aside so you don't misplace any of them we do of course have spares we could send you but you don't really don't want to wait for that time frame so do make sure you put them off to the side this is now just as easy as pulling this out now i say it's easy this is where the hammer may come in as you can see it's rather tight if you're having difficulty turn it over and with the hammer you want to hit the end of the axle now as you can see it has separated for the cell from the cut from the hub and it simply pulls out now when you pull this out one of two things is going to happen one this whole unit will come out as as you see it here or two this whole unit minus the planetary gears which are right here will come out sometimes the planetary gears will get stuck in here and just stay there and that's fine when you've pulled it out the first thing you want to do of course is examine the planetary gears the easiest way to do this is to remove it which is not too difficult when you remove it you're going to have two pieces you're going to want to be aware of these which are the planetary gears themselves the second is a very small pin it is rounded on one edge and squared on the other this pin slides inside the planetary gears and holds it securely against the axle so it stays in one place this is an important piece so do make sure you remember it and you don't lose it first thing you want to do of course as i said is look over your planetary gears it is of course easier when it's removed so this way you can see all the teeth equally if you need to of course you can clean it with a degreaser as you will probably want to re-grease it when you put it back as i said first thing you want to do is of course look at the teeth and make sure they spin freely and you don't hear any grinding or scraping noises assuming they are all good you then also want to look at the inside of the hub in here you will see the band of metal teeth those work with the planetary gears and this is what spins your entire hub and wheel from when the motor actually starts spinning these of course are metal the likelihood of these braking is unlikely but you're still looking for debris this one of course looks rather clean so it's fine there at that point everything in here is fine everything on the planetary gears is fine if we had asked you to of course examine it to look for debris take this opportunity to take a few photos take a photo of the inside of the casing take a photo of the planetary gears then you can send those to us for the evaluation and documentation in your warranty claim if you're having difficulty removing the planetary gear there's a few ways you can do it honestly the easiest one i have is just banging it down on a hard surface straight down onto the end of the axle and that will loosen up the planetary gear is just enough of course you don't want to slam it you just want to bang it enough to get this loose and it'll go when you're ready to add some more grease you only want a few little drops about so much and you want to put about maybe four or five throughout the entirety of the motor i always prefer to stick them inside the hub and then with gloved hands just smush it around in there make sure it gets into the teeth a little bit so that way it is a nice light coating it doesn't have to be perfect and uniform you just want to make sure that the grease is in there if you find your planetary teeth are also extremely dry especially after you clean them you may want to put an extra dab or two of uh grease amongst the wheels and do the same thing spreading it around on the wheels and again in the hub putting the hub back is simple enough but there's a little trick because of course you want to make sure those teeth and the planetary gears teeth line up if you're lucky first shot right out of the gate you'll get that happening which did not happen this time the trick here is rotate the axle just a little bit while applying some pressure and eventually you'll get it in place as you turn the axle that's moving the planetary gears around and they're going to just find their way into place once that's done line up the holes of course where the bolts came out of and bolt her back up and there you go that is how you open up and examine the inside of your hub motor
