hi I'm Jason Lake I'm going to show you how to make stairs for your deck so the first step in making a set of stairs is calculating the height so we're going to do is get a level make sure that's level off the deck and we have is 28 inches the average step what I like to use is 7 inches anything higher becomes a little awkward to walk in any lower becomes a bit of a tripping hazard so now we have to do is calculate how many times 7 goes into 28 so we're going to have 4 steps to get up to this height of 28 inches what you should use and always use is a 2 by a 12 so it's nice and wide that way the stairs are nice and strong so what you do is get your framing square out and you get seven on the outside and 11 on the other side here so that's the rise and run and make our mark then we're going to work our way all the way down now what we're going to do is 90 off the top step that's the plumb cut or the stairs this here is what's going to attach to the deck we're going to be putting a 2 by 6 stair tread on here so if we didn't cut off this inch and a half that means that this step would be eight and a half inches which we don't want we want to make sure you cut this off that way each step is 7 inches so here's a finished stringer but what I don't like to see is when people over cut and it doesn't look very attractive and it also starts to weaken the stringer so what you do is go right to the line each way and then use your hand saw to finish off the rest now we're going to attach the stringer to the deck again make sure you use galvanized nails so once we've nailed the stringer in place what I'm going to do is put a little corner bracket on just to give it some added strength don't use screws at all the screws have no shear strength so you want to use a galvanized d-10 so there you go the stair stringers attached to your deck it's strong not going anywhere so make sure you watch my show on college lathe network called deck stocks and gazebos totally rotted out now if this person had a strip of ice and water this would never have happened in this deck weight loss at another 20 years
